Sarah's Desperate Choice

Author: : Xiao Xiaosu
Genre: Modern
Michael Peterson had it all – a thriving architecture firm, a beautiful wife Sarah, and their miracle baby, Hope, due in months after years of IVF. His life was perfect. Then a single text shattered it: Sarah had terminated their much-longed-for pregnancy. Not for medical reasons, but for Jules, her toxic college ex, who supposedly needed her after a minor motorcycle accident. Michael raced to the hospital, finding Sarah caring for Jules, who had a mere broken leg. He watched, horrified, as she defended Jules, even emptying their joint accounts to fund his 'comeback.' The facade crumbled further when Michael discovered Jules was a drug addict, and Sarah, manipulated and coerced, had become addicted herself. The abortion, he learned, was a desperate, misguided attempt to protect their baby from a drug-addicted life and Michael from criminal implications. The true cost of this betrayal hit when his fierce, supportive sister, Emily, succumbed to stress-induced aneurysm while fighting to clear his name, leaving Michael utterly alone amidst financial ruin. How could one man's insidious influence, fueled by his wife's twisted loyalty, unravel a life built on love and dreams, dragging everyone through such profound despair and ultimately claiming innocent lives? With everything lost-family, fortune, and the very hope he once cherished-Michael is left facing total annihilation. Now, stripped bare of his past, he wanders the vast, empty landscapes of America, searching for a path forward, or perhaps just a reason to keep driving. His journey has just begun, but where will it lead?

Introduction

Michael Peterson had it all – a thriving architecture firm, a beautiful wife Sarah, and their miracle baby, Hope, due in months after years of IVF.

His life was perfect.

Then a single text shattered it: Sarah had terminated their much-longed-for pregnancy.

Not for medical reasons, but for Jules, her toxic college ex, who supposedly needed her after a minor motorcycle accident.

Michael raced to the hospital, finding Sarah caring for Jules, who had a mere broken leg.

He watched, horrified, as she defended Jules, even emptying their joint accounts to fund his 'comeback.'

The facade crumbled further when Michael discovered Jules was a drug addict, and Sarah, manipulated and coerced, had become addicted herself.

Chapter 1

Michael Peterson stared at the blueprints, a rare smile on his face. The Denver skyline project was finally coming together, a testament to years of hard work. His architecture firm was thriving. Life was good. He was thirty-five, successful, and soon, he' d be a father.

He glanced at the framed photo on his desk: him and Sarah, beaming, her hand resting on her visibly pregnant belly. Seven years of marriage, three brutal years of IVF, and now, their miracle baby, Hope, was just three months away.

His phone buzzed. A text from Sarah.

He opened it, expecting a reminder to pick up organic kale or something about the nursery.

The words swam before his eyes.

"Mike, I had to. I terminated the pregnancy."

Michael's breath hitched. No. This was a mistake, a sick joke.

He read on, his hand trembling.

"Jules was in a motorcycle accident. It was bad. The negative energy, the stress... it would have hurt the baby. Or maybe the baby was a bad omen for him. I couldn' t risk it. He needs me. We can always have another, Mike. I can't let him go through this alone."

Jules.

Her college ex. The one that got away, or so she romanticized.

The blueprints blurred. The years of injections, the clinic visits, Sarah' s tears, his own quiet prayers, the overwhelming joy when they finally heard Hope' s heartbeat.

Gone.

Because of Jules.

A wave of nausea hit him. "We can always have another." The casual cruelty of it.

He grabbed his keys, his mind a blank, roaring void.

He had to get to her.

He had to understand.

But a cold dread settled in his stomach. He already knew. Sarah had made her choice.

It wasn' t him. It wasn' t Hope.

It was Jules.

Chapter 2

Michael slammed the car door and ran into the hospital, his heart pounding against his ribs. He expected to find Sarah in a recovery room, pale, maybe regretful.

Instead, he found her in a regular room, not as a patient, but as a visitor.

She was perched on the edge of a chair beside a hospital bed, fussing over Julian "Jules" Vance.

Jules lay there, a cast on one leg, a few scratches on his face, looking more annoyed than injured. He was milking it, a smug look on his face when he saw Michael.

Sarah jumped up when Michael entered. "Mike! You got my text."

Her voice was calm, too calm. She wasn't pregnant anymore. The gentle swell of her stomach was gone.

"What did you do, Sarah?" Michael' s voice was dangerously low.

"I told you. Jules needed me," she said, gesturing towards the man in the bed. "He could have died."

"He has a broken leg," Michael bit out, his eyes fixed on Jules, who smirked. "A broken leg, Sarah. And for that, you killed our baby?"

"Don't say that!" Sarah cried, her eyes flashing. "It was a terrible decision, but the stress..."

"Stress? What about the stress of IVF? What about the stress you just put me through? Our child, Sarah! Hope!"

Jules cleared his throat. "Hey man, take it easy on her. She did what she thought was best."

Michael whirled on him. "You stay out of this, you leech."

"Mike, stop it!" Sarah stepped between them. "He' s injured! You' re upsetting him."

Michael stared at his wife, the woman he loved, the woman who had carried their child. He didn' t recognize her.

"I' m upsetting him?" he repeated, a hollow laugh escaping him. "You just aborted our baby, our miracle baby that we fought for, for him. And you' re worried about upsetting him?"

Tears welled in Sarah's eyes. "You don't understand."

"Oh, I understand perfectly," Michael said, his voice raw. "You chose him. You always choose him."

He turned and walked out, the sound of Sarah calling his name fading behind him.

Later that evening, Michael sat in their silent living room, the baby shower gifts Emily, his sister, had dropped off earlier piled in the corner. Brightly colored boxes full of tiny clothes and soft toys.

Emily had called, excited about the shower they were planning. He' d had to tell her.

The doorbell rang. It was Emily. Her face fell when she saw him, then hardened when she saw the untouched gifts and Sarah, who had just walked in, her face tear-streaked but defiant.

Emily looked from Sarah' s flat stomach to Michael' s devastated face.

"No," Emily whispered. "Sarah, what did you do?"

Sarah just looked away.

Emily' s voice rose, shaking with fury. "You threw away your baby? For that... that waste of space from college? After everything Michael went through? Everything you both went through?"

"It's more complicated than that," Sarah mumbled.

"Complicated?" Emily scoffed. "It's monstrous. That's what it is." She turned to Michael, her eyes full of pain for him. "Mike, I am so sorry."

Michael just nodded, numb. The family he dreamed of was gone, shattered by a ghost from Sarah' s past.
