Jill Alexander slumped over onto his arm, which was laid across the front desk at the police station. Except for the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead, and the periodic groan of the old building, the room was quiet. Things in Northern Ireland had been bad for quite some time now, more crime, growing tension, the air seeming to thicken further with each passing day. It had been a heavy few weeks for Jill, a twenty-two-year-old police inspector fresh out of the academy.
He tossed fitfully in his sleep, exhaustion finally overcoming him after another grueling shift. The station was quiet now, except for him and his colleague Mike, who was dozing at the other end of the desk. Jill's mind, however, was anything but still.
His body jerked and his breathing came in ragged gasps while this nightmare played out. He dreamed the world was spiraling into chaos: scientists and technologists were being murdered one after another, each of the deaths shrouded in mystery. He envisioned his country in a tussle with its military forces weakened by a lack of weapons and medicine. With each passing minute, it got even worse: other nations circled like vultures, ready to give the last blow to Northern Ireland in its weakest state.
His dream now changed into him being in a battleground where many soldiers had fallen, and far ahead, he saw himself, lifeless and cold. The news reached his parents of his death, and the pain in their eyes tore him; he had gone against them to get into this force, and now their worst fears had come true.
Jill! Wake up!" A voice pierced the haze, and Jill sat bolt upright, his heart racing in his chest.
Mike was standing over him, concern etched across his features. "You okay, man? You were shaking like a leaf," he said, passing Jill a cup of water.
Jill took the cup with trembling hands, still fighting to delineate the real world from the vivid images. "Mike. you're alive?" he asked in a hoarse tone.
Of course, I'm alive. What kind of question is that?" Mike shot back-a puzzled expression crossing his face.
"It was. just a nightmare," Jill murmured, rubbing his temples. "It felt so real."
"Nightmares usually do when you're stressed out," Mike replied, though his tone was laced with skepticism. "You need a break, mate.
Maybe you're right," Jill conceded, though an untouched unease sat in his chest like a stone. "Can I head out for the night? I'll cover your shift if you need it later this week."
"Fine, just remember, you owe me," Mike agreed, his mood brightening at the thought of finally taking his girlfriend out.
She thanked him and headed out of the station. The chill of the air seemed to settle in his bones as he walked down the dimly lit streets. His house wasn't that far, small comfort against the feeling of foreboding clinging to him.
This nightmare had been recurring, but tonight it was more vivid than ever, more like a warning than a dream. Every little detail now replayed in his mind as though he was reliving it. The scientists, the deaths, chaos. Could all that be mere coincidence, or was there something buried in his subconscious?
By the time Jill reached his home, his head was throbbing. He undressed quickly and went into the bathroom, hoping that a hot shower could wash off the unease. As the water poured on him, he closed his eyes to try to push away the haunting images of the faces of his parents, which were marked by devastation.
The silence of the bathroom was suddenly torn apart by a voice.
"Hello, Host, this is System 010. Say, 'activate' to complete the process."
Jill jumped; his heart was racing with great bounds within his chest. He whirled around, and his gaze scanned space devoid of everything. "Who's there?! If this is some kind of joke, it isn't funny!"
"Activate in ten seconds. Ten, nine, eight...
"What the-?!" Jill's heart was racing. He could feel a tingling sensation spread across his chest, a pressure that mounted with each second. Panic surged as the counting continued.
"Activate!" he exclaimed as the voice reached nine, the word stumbling from his lips as if pushed by an unseen force.
Activated," the voice replied, as smooth as silk. "Greetings, Host. I am System 010 from the future. It is time to save the future before it happens. My core is within you and linked to your life functions. If it be more convenient for you, I'd appreciate it if you give me a name."
Jill's legs buckled beneath him, and he slumped back against the wall. He blinked as his vision began to blur and darken, and a shaking whisper escaped his lips, "Inside.me?
The world had faded to black before he could find the strength to scream.
Jill Alexander startled from a dead sleep by the loud, shrieking alarm across the room. His eyes snapped open and he groaned, reaching out an arm to quiet the din, only to close his fingers over cold tile. Blinking in confusion, he sat up-stiff and sore. He wasn't lying in his bed; he was lying on the bathroom floor.
What the...?" Jill muttered, rubbing his eyes. He attempted to work out how he'd come to be here as, muzzy-headed with the peculiar dream still clinging to him like a shroud. Events of the night before suddenly cascaded into his mind: System 010, the voice, the weird activation. Was any of that real?
Getting clumsily to his feet, he cast furtive glances around this small apartment for signs of an intruder. His pulse quickened as anxiety mixed with skepticism in his frantic searching. The only sound in the apartment was that of the still-blaring alarm.
Exhaling heavily, he jabbed his finger onto the alarm until the noise finally subsided. "Get a grip, Jill," he muttered to himself. "Must've been a nightmare... just a really vivid nightmare."
Before he could get himself to believe that, however, a voice pierced the air.
"Good morning, Host. Are you ready for today's mission?" The voice was clear and calm, echoing through the room as though it came from everywhere and nowhere all at once.
Jill's breath hitched in his throat, and he whipped around, wide-eyed with incredulity. "What the hell? Where are you?!" he yelled out, trembling, as he stepped backward, scanning every corner.
No cursing, Host," the voice chided; its tone was almost that of a scolding parent. "I am System 010 from the future, now integrated with you. Please assign me a name for easier communication."
Jill's legs felt unsteady, and he sank onto the edge of his bed, his mind racing. "This is. this is insane," he stammered. "You're telling me this is real? That you're real?
The voice answered evenly, "Yes, Host, this is neither a simulation nor a dream. You are to be the host for System 010. I'm here to help you avoid the future you saw in your nightmares."
The room seemed to close in on him, and Jill rubbed his temples, trying to steady his breathing. "So. those nightmares--they weren't just bad dreams?"
"They were projections, Host. A view of what is to happen if present course is maintained. The prospects of your country look grim. There are processes already set in motion. Scientists, technologists, and other key individuals are targeted. This is a plot to destabilize and destroy the country."
Jill's gut twisted in fear. "You mean the nightmare will come true?" his voice cracking.
"Yes," the system said. "What you saw was just the beginning-about ten percent of the full extent of the devastation that awaits."
The blood ran from Jill's face. He felt that his nightmare had been so real, which by the confirmatory from another source now caused to run shivers along his skin. "Why me?" he asked, desperation clinging to his voice. "Why was I chosen for this?
Because you have what it takes to get the job done, Host. Your determination, your law enforcement background-a perfect combination, not to mention you had these visions. So, you were the man for the job. With a little help from me, we can change the course of events."
Jill's fists were balled up, his gut a pot of simmering fear and anger. "What am I dealing with here? Some sort of AI program? Why was this chip planted inside of me against my will?
I am a highly advanced artificial intelligence from the future, created to help avert doomsday scenarios," System 010 explained. "My implantation into you was necessary to directly interface with your neural pathways for the most superior response and to assist you effectively."
Jill shook his head; his mind was reeling. "This is too much. I mean, how am I supposed to stop some grand conspiracy from unraveling?
"Step by step, Host. First, we have to find out who orders these attacks on the scientists and start securing the potential targets. I'll instruct and advise as necessary."
Jill swallowed, getting her head around it all. "Okay, but you're getting a name. I'm not going to say 'System 010' every time I have to refer to you."
"That would be agreeable. What name would you like?"
Jill thought for a moment, then replied, "How about. SEA-Z? Sounds spacey enough."
"SEA-Z it is. Now, Host, let us begin. Time is not on our side."
Jill took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. He didn't know whether he could trust this System or if he even had a choice, but if his nightmare was indeed a glance at what was to come, he didn't have any time to waste.
Jill's heart still raced as he tried to wrap his head around SEA-Z's revelation. A future AI implanted in him, claiming he can prevent a national catastrophe? It was something out of a sci-fi movie, but if there was a shred of truth to it, then he had no choice but to listen. He could not shake off the images of his nightmare: screaming faces, burning cities, and chaos beyond imagination. He couldn't help but feel that it was not just a dream.
Taking a deep breath, Jill got to his feet and made himself focus. "Alright, SEA-Z, if we're doing this, we start on my terms. I need to know exactly what kind of enhancements you've given me," he said in a steady, determined voice.
As I have said, Host, I have merged with your nervous system. That would include accelerated reflexes, better speed of processing for quicker decisions, and access to data that's beyond what a typical human could access. You will also find yourself much more resistant to fatigue, able to go for long periods without rest, SEA-Z explained.
Jill ran a hand through his hair, struggling to wrap his head around what this SEA-Z was telling him. This all sounded unreal to him, like some sort of superhuman upgrade. "What's the catch?" he asked warily. "There's always a catch.
It takes maintenance, Host, to sustain these enhancements," SEA-Z said. "Too much use can result in mental and physical fatigue. You must learn to pace your activities and utilize the system only when necessary. Once you are integrated, there is no going back. The link is permanent.
Jill's chest tightened, and he turned to look at his reflection again. The man staring back was the same as always-lean but muscular, unshaven, with tired eyes-but something different was in his gaze, a flicker of intensity he'd never seen before. The man in the mirror looked like someone on the edge of a great change.
Permanent, huh?" he muttered, as if trying to convince himself that he could accept this. He did not have any other choice. If the future really was at stake, then this was a risk worth taking. "Fine, SEA-Z. I will start by investigating these scientists' deaths. Give me all the information you have on Dr. Robert Hayes."
"Accessing data," SEA-Z responded. In an instant, a wave of data coursed into Jill's brain projected through a weakly illuminating interface that appeared in his line of sight, a heads-up display streaming information as if he was reading them off a monitor. "Dr. Robert Hayes, age 52, was a well-respected physicist; expertise in quantum computing. He was found dead two weeks ago in his laboratory. Cause of death was ruled a heart attack, but there were some discrepancies in the autopsy that certainly imply foul play."
"Heart attack?" Jill raised an eyebrow. "Convenient, isn't it? Any suspects?
"Officially, no," SEA-Z replied. "But there was a security breach in Dr. Hayes's research facility several days ago. Files pertinent to experimental quantum communication systems were accessed and stolen, but the whole incident was written off as industrial espionage.
So, someone wanted his research bad enough to kill for it," Jill mused. "And if that research is connected to what's coming, then whoever did this might be planning on something far bigger than a tech heist.
Jill could feel his instincts kicking in, the ones honed from years on the force. He was just a fresh detective, but he could follow a trail, and this one stank of something deeper than a simple robbery gone wrong. The ante had been raised-SEA-Z's arrival was more than some bizarre intrusion into his life. It was the start of something dangerous.
"Any clue where to start?" he asked.
"Yes, Host," SEA-Z answered. "Dr. Hayes had a colleague, Dr. Sandra Levine, with whom he worked on this same project. She has gone missing as well. I do not know where she is. She may prove to be very important to knowing what has happened to Dr. Hayes."
Jill nodded. "All right then, Sandra Levine it is. I will first check the last known address. If there is a clue on where she went, I'll find it."
Before he could even flex his limbs, the voice inside his head came back to life, this time in a different tone–hurry. "Host, I sense a disruption. The network of your building's security has been breached. And now, two armed men enter your building through the ground-floor emergency exit.".
I can feel my muscles growing tight, and adrenaline has just shot through my body." "What? How did they find me so darned quick?"
"I cannot say what their purpose is here, but the fact that they are present at this time, as soon as I was activated, and the nature of the mission is pretty suspicious," SEA-Z added. "You need to gear up for battle. They are coming up to your floor.
Jill's heart was pounding in his ears as he quickly glanced around for something he could use as a weapon. He wasn't one to keep a firearm at home, but he did have a sturdy metal baton in the closet-a leftover from his early days in the academy. He grabbed it and moved to the door, pressing his ear against it to listen.
Footsteps echoed in the hall; these echoed closer. The intruders were moving fast.
"SEA-Z, have you any idea who they are?" Jill whispered, not wanting to raise his voice.
Based on the limited data I've accessed, they seem to be hired guns from an organization by the name of 'The Nexus'-an underground organization believed to trade high-tech arms as well as conduct illicit tests and experiments, SEA-Z responded. Their very presence here may mean they already know about the activation of the system itself.
Jill's grasp tightened on the baton. He could feel his body reacting quicker, his senses honed beyond what he was accustomed to. He did not need SEA-Z to tell him that this was no ordinary break-in; this was an actual hit.
The doorknob rattled.
Jill sprang into action, pressing himself against the wall next to the door. Metal groaned as the lock was forced open, and the door creaked open. Two men dressed in black tactical gear stepped into the dimly lit apartment, drawing guns.
Without hesitation, Jill was in motion. His movements were effortless, almost instinctive. He pivoted the baton with the correct force onto the first intruder's wrist, which sent his gun flying to the floor. This man only had time to turn toward Jill before Jill continued to jab hard into his stomach and stepped backward.
The second man raised his gun, but Jill was already moving. She twisted his body to get out of the way of the shot and brought the baton down on the side of the man's head. He went down in a heap.
Gasping for air, Jill stood over the two unconscious men. He looked down at his hands still holding onto the baton, thinking to himself about just how quick his reflexes were. It was as if SEA-Z had not only augmented his body but also his instincts.
"Host, you have to leave now," urged SEA-Z. "More will come once these men are found. We have to move and carry on with the mission from a secure location.".
Jill looked over the bodies one last time, a chill running down his spine. That was not the life he had agreed to enter into, but now he could go no back.
He reached for his jacket and fled out of the door not knowing which direction to run, only knowing that in one thing-he was no longer in charge of his destiny.
The stairwell was filled with Jill's footsteps as he took the stairs two steps at a time. His heart was beating, his ears pounding, but his movements were in control, his stride sure. His senses seemed to be more finely tuned with the network of SEA-Z integrated into his nervous system; his body quicker than before. Every sound came through to him so clearly: ventilation hum from the building itself, wail of a far-off siren outside, and the heavy thuds of opening doors above.
"They're not far behind," SEA-Z warned. "Backup for the intruders has entered the building, closing in on your last known location.".
She charged harder, leaping down the last flight of stairs and crashing through the exit door into the alleyway behind his apartment building. The dim light of dawn was just beginning to creep over the rooftops, casting long shadows across the narrow passage.
He was going to have to think fast, here. No time to go back to his apartment for supplies or arms. And if those mercenaries were indeed with The Nexus, they could catch him easily enough again if they knew his identity.
"SEA-Z, are there any safe houses or any place I can lay low nearby?" he asked, scanning the alley for an avenue of escape.
Scanning local databases and cross-referencing known locations...\" The voice of SEA-Z hummed for a moment before responding. "There is an abandoned industrial site about two miles from here. It should give us temporary cover until we sort out what we're doing next.".
"Sounds better than nothing," Jill muttered. He sprinted down the alley, cutting left onto a quiet street lined with parked cars. His muscles burned with the effort, but he could feel that extra burst of endurance SEA-Z had mentioned-it pushed him to keep going, to move faster than he thought possible.
As he ran, questions buzzed through Jill's mind. If this Nexus group was connected with the future disaster, why had they targeted him so quickly? How did they know about SEA-Z's activation? The thought of being hunted before he'd even started the mission made his skin crawl.
"SEA-Z, how much do you know about The Nexus?" he asked, his breathing coming in measured bursts as he kept up the pace.
They are an elusive organization with deep ties into the black market for technological and biological enhancements," SEA-Z replied. "There is evidence to suggest they fund illegal experimentation and work covertly across multiple countries. Their primary goal seems to be the acquisition and control of advanced technologies, which would fall in line with them having an interest in trying to stop our mission.
So, they're not just mercenaries. They're players in the bigger game, Jill said, his thoughts racing. "They could have a hand in whatever's going to bring about that future you showed me."
"It is a distinct possibility," SEA-Z confirmed. "We must proceed with caution.".
Jill made another corner, looking over his shoulder to make sure no one was following him. In the distance, he could see a black SUV pull up next to his building, reinforcing the two men he had taken down. He did not wait to see if they had found their comrades. He turned his attention back to his path, scanning everything for something unusual as he drew near the industrial site SEA-Z had directed him to.
The building loomed before him, a hulking mass of steel and broken windows. Once a bustling factory, it was now an empty shell left to decay. Jill approached cautiously, ducking through a gap in the chain-link fence and slipping inside through a side entrance. The interior was dark and cluttered with debris, but at least he could catch his breath and formulate some kind of plan.
"Host, I've accessed schematics on this facility," SEA-Z said, laying an outline map over Jill's vision. "You are now in the maintenance wing. There's a secure room two levels subgrade that should provide suitable cover if we need to hole up for any duration.".
Jill nodded, somewhat placated. "Excellent. Lead the way," he said, striding at a quick pace down the dark halls. At a stairwell going down, one thing rose to the surface of his mind-the nagging, gnawing feeling of impending doom.
"SEA-Z, why did The Nexus come for me so shortly after your online date? How would they even know where I was?" he asked.
"They probably have advanced tracking technology or access to confidential information about our mission," SEA-Z explained. "It is equally possible that an insider in the system and responsible for my deployment leaked some information to The Nexus."
Jill's jaw clenched. "You mean there might be a traitor in the system?"
"Exactly, Host. The situation is already happening too fast to ignore the possibility of internal sabotage," SEA-Z concluded.
Jill reached the bottom of the stairwell and stopped, listening. He could hear faint footsteps above-more of The Nexus operatives closing in. The secure room SEA-Z had mentioned was just down the hall, but his instincts screamed that he was walking into a trap. If they knew about SEA-Z, they could already have guessed his next move.
"No time to stand on ceremony here, Host," SEA-Z insisted. "The secure room is our best bet in regrouping and receiving further data."
Jill balled his fists as every muscle tensed. "Fine. But if this goes south, we're fighting our way out."
He ran down the hall, hit the door, and entered a quick code given to him by SEA-Z. The door slid open, and he stepped inside to take immediate cover behind a stack of old crates. He peered into the room, finding nothing but dust-covered equipment and darkness.
Then, there was a faint sound-a low mechanical hum. It grew louder, and Jill recognized it as the buzz of a drone. His eyes darted to the far corner of the room, where a small surveillance drone hovered, its camera lens trained on him.
"Damn it, SEA-Z! They see us!" Jill hissed, rising already to pound the drone out. He swung his baton as hard as he could and cracked free the rotor from the device; the thing hit the floor with a thud.
Host, I am reading multiple lifeforms heading this direction. The hostiles are onto your presence, said SEA-Z.
Jill's mind was racing a million miles an hour. He could hear the pounding of footsteps down the stairs, the unmistakable thud of boots on concrete. They were closing in and this room was about to become a death trap.
"SEA-Z, find me another way out!" Jill barked, glancing around the room for any possible escape.
Accessing floor plans," SEA-Z said in an instant. "There is an old ventilation shaft to your right. It's going to be a squeeze, but it can take you to the surface.
Jill ran to the ventilation shaft and pulled off the rusted metal grate. He crawled inside as the narrow space barely allowed him and then started dragging himself forward. He heard the door of the secure room burst open behind him, followed by the screaming operatives.
She crawled faster, ignoring the searing pain in his elbows and knees as he wriggled through the twisting shaft. Every muscle was screaming to stop, yet he forced himself to continue on, inches at a time, toward the faint light ahead.
He kicked the grate out at the end of the shaft and tumbled onto hard concrete outside the industrial site. For the time being, he was free. But as he scrambled to his feet, he knew this was only the beginning.
Panting, Jill's mind was already racing with questions and plans as he stood. There was no time to stop; The Nexus was after him and he had to stay ahead. Only now was his mission truly starting.
