Gwen's POV
I stared at the huge frame of my beloved father inlaw, hot drops of tears trickled down my eyes.
I have been standing there for over ten minutes since Laura led me into our living room. It was his funeral today, and I'd say this was the worst day of my life.
Laura had tried to get me into the bed to get some sleep, but I couldn't just get myself to get some rest.
My heavy heart couldn't just fathom that I wouldn't be ever seeing him again.
Dr Lucas wasn't just my father inlaw, he was a loving father and mentor to me. He loved me like I was his biological daughter, showing me the fatherly love I had never experienced in my life, and now, I can't tell how I'd navigate life, especially in this house without him.
Laura walked up to me again, and offering me a napkin, she reminded me that she would be on her way as it was already getting dark.
"I hope you get some rest, Gwen."
She whispered calmly and I nodded, while thanking her for being there.
As she left, I decided to heed to her advice and force myself to sleep, but suddenly the door stormed open again and I was wondering if Laura had come back.
"You startled me, Sane. Though you said you, Oliver and mum won't be coming home tonight?"
I asked my sister inlaw, Sane, who walked up to me with the most dreaded gaze ever.
She, her mum and my husband, Oliver told me they'd sleep over at Albert's house, my father in law brother's house.
And I was wondering why she was here, and why the gaze.
"Oh, you better be more than startled because no one would defend your barren ass now grandfather is gone."
Sane stated as she walked up to me with an evil smirk, aiming to devour my throat.
I was taken aback by her words.
My feet made involuntary steps backwards as I walked away from her gaze.
She still did not stop coming closer.
Soon, she caught up with me again, eyes pressed on my stomach.
"You think you've climbed the ladder so fast? Well, you should have prayed for grandfather not to die. Poor Gwen, watch what will happen when Oliver gets back here."
Her words echoed into my ears like a loud bolt and I couldn't help but wonder what I had done wrong this time around.
I know Sane never liked me, but today was the worst day to bring up her drama.
We have just lost grandfather and this was what she had to say to a grieving daughter in law?
Dr Lucas is their grandfather and even though not their biological father, he was the one I got to know as father in law since I got married into the Patricks family.
Oliver took him as his dad after he lost his own father in a car accident.
I heaved a sad sigh.
"Sane has always been a crackhead." I muttered to myself, dismissing the thoughts that were beginning to crowd my mind.
Now I didn't know if I wanted to go get some sleep again.
She said Oliver was coming, so I needed to go make his tea.
My poor husband, watching him cry bitterly as Dr Lucas's grave was lowered, broke my heart, so I needed to make him something that would calm him.
Quickly, I dashed into the kitchen to make his favorite coffee.
Oliver loved his coffee thick and dark, and I was always at his service.
As I took out the coffee container from the shelf, I heard someone call my name with the harshest tone I have ever heard
Rushing back to the living room, Oliver was standing there with a brown envelope in his hands.
His masculine hands stretched towards me, signaling I took it.
"Baby, is everything ok? You startled me with the way you screamed my name"
My voice stuttered. My body couldn't deny the danger signals that his gaze emitted.
Oliver was mute and motionless and as soon as my hands landed on the envelope, he turned towards the stairs to walk upstairs.
"What is this?"
I muttered. Now Sane's words were back to haunt me, but how bad could the item in this envelope be at this point in our lives?
I quickly opened the envelope, and the first thing that stared at me was the word DIVORCE!.
My heart took involuntary skips as I glanced through the papers. They were divorce papers.
My eyes shut immediately, it was as if I was beginning to see double.
My throat itching in my mouth.
"No, this can't be. -- no, no, baby this is a joke right?"
I stuttered as I followed Oliver up the stairs.
My heart thumped hard as I followed him.
My breath was shutting down.
"Listen baby, I know you're stressed, and I totally understand, but serving me divorce papers? What have I done?
My voice stuttered, my hands trembled terribly as I walked behind him.
"You should be asking yourself what you haven't done, Gwen! You should."
His rich baritone voice roared, threatening to bring down the roof, while he made his way into his room.
We have been married for three years, but still share separate rooms.
"Look Gwen, if at all you're someone that tells yourself the truth, you should know that since the inception of this contraception called our marriage, nothing has been working. Nothing! Not even the barest thing a woman gives to her man, a child!" Now you dare stay there and ask me what you've done?"
His voice came again, gradually shutting down my breaths.
There Oliver goes again, bringing up my inability to conceive to mock me, despite all the effort I put in to make it work.
I tried to find my voice to speak, but the sight of another woman shut me up.
She waddled seductively to my husband, my Oliver, and ruffled his wavy black hair, her hands wrapped around his broad masculine shoulders, while their lips circled up in a kiss.
"Who is making my baby scream this loud?"
The lady asked, her voice, a perfect blend of scorn and concern.
And I could differentiate who has which.
Scorn for me, and concern for Oliver.
My heart dropped into my mouth as I stared helplessly like a dumb fool.
This couldn't possibly be happening.
"Who is this babe?"
I croaked, but Oliver's voice shushed me up immediately.
"Our days of babyshiping is over, Gwen. If you're still finding it difficult to understand what's written on those documents, sleep over it, I'm sure it'll be clear by tomorrow morning."
He mocked and continued to hug the lady.
Just then, it jogged my mind that I had seen that lady somewhere.
Yes, I had.
She was his ex lover, Selina. The one who jilted him on the altar on their wedding day a few years back.
How come she was here and Oliver allowed her to come back into his life?
I don't know what that witch had done, but the Oliver I know wouldn't act this way to me.
This was a man I have been married to for the past three years. It was strange for him to just wake up and resent me, let alone serve me divorce papers.
I reached to touch him, to be sure he was still him acting, but a hand pushed me, crashing my back to the wall.
"Aghh!" I cried, now those tears I had bottled didn't have any other choice than to drop.
"Aren't you shameless you barren witch? Dr Lucas is dead, and so are your charms, do we even have to remind you to pack?"
Leticia's voice barked from the door, after she pushed me.
Soon, she was standing before me with Sane, together with Oliver and Selina, all dreadful gaze on me.
"Listen, Gwen or whatever you call yourself. Your hours are numbered in this house, do I make myself clear?"
Her voice came again, sending another bolt of shock to my spine.
This couldn't possibly be the family I have lived with for the past three years.
I know Sane and my mother in law never liked me, but I never knew it was till this extent of kicking me out just after the demise of Dr Lucas.
I know with Oliver, there was no such thing as love, but hatred? He never showed me anything like hate since we got married, he was cold and distant, yes, but he cared for me as well. So why the sudden switch?
Our marriage may have been orchestrated by Dr Lucas who is a renowned pediatric surgeon and businessman, but is this the way it is supposed to end?
Is this the way people's marriages end?
I struggled to get up from the floor, eyes filled with tears. I didn't even know what else to say other than remind them of how much I have sacrificed for my marriage to work.
"You remember the work I put in to make this work? Huh? I quit my job for two years now, Oliver, just to carry your child and this is how you pay me back?"
There was a loud scoff from Sane, who rolled her eyes and smacked her lips in disgust. "You were desperate to be married into a rich family, if not you would have dusted your shoes and left as soon as you saw that you couldn't conceive. To think this was the only reason why my brother married you."
I felt a sharp pain in my chest as I processed all she had said.
Truly, looking back, I have been a fool for love.
I remember Dr Lucas approaching me at the clinic, telling me that he'd want me to marry his grandson, Dr Oliver.
Then I was working as a physician at one of Dr Lucas's hospitals in New York while Oliver worked at one of his hospitals in Chicago.
You needed to see how I jumped on the offer like someone who hadn't seen a man before.
But who wouldn't?
Who wouldn't jump on the offer to be the wife of a renowned cardiologist in America, with numerous groundbreaking achievements in medicine.
Dr Oliver was and still is every woman's dream.
After we saw it was taking me so long to conceive, Dr Lucas advised me to quit my job in order to limit stress which I did, and now I think I might have made the worst mistake of my life.
Cleaning up the tears that flooded my eyes. I nodded my head, making my way to my room.
I needed to get a pen and sign the damn divorce papers asap. There was no need for begging.
The only one who would have spoken for me was gone, and I was left with lions that were eager to devour me.
As I made my way to my room, they didn't take their scornful eyes off me.
Oliver didn't move to stop me, and that broke my heart the most.
I got my pen and dashed to the door to get to Oliver's room.
Our rooms were only demarcated by a corridor.
Selina was standing at my door, her evil eyes stuck on me.
"You see, I thought of something real quick. You can't just leave like that without me making Oliver hate you forever."
She said and robbed her tummy in a very passionate manner.
"No, you can't!"
My words stuck in my mouth as I got the message she was trying to send. She was pregnant with Oliver.
Now my heart shattered into a million pieces. I doubt if it would ever mend.
But that wasn't the whole message, as she screamed, "we're expecting a baby!"
Making sure that everyone in Oliver's room heard it.
She intentionally lowered herself and began to roll down the stairs, pretending that I had pushed her.
Her screams alerted Oliver and the rest and when they came out, Selina was at the last frame of the stairs pretending to have collapsed.
"What have you done to her!"
Oliver thundered. His brows arched dangerously, and his eyes attempted to devour me.
"You wretch! You dare push my pregnant daughter in law?"
Leticia asked and immediately landed her hands on my neck.
One thing with Leticia is that she'd always get physical. Hardly did she have any altercation with anyone without trying to lay her hands on them.
I learnt that her late husband would mock her for not always managing her emotions like a wealthy woman that she was.
Before I could say a word, her large hands cupped my neck and drew closer to her.
"I didn't touch her. I swear!"
I struggled to speak, barely recovering from the shock of Selina's drama.
"So this is the length jealousy can make you go?"
Leticia's voice came again, and when she tried to hit me again, I blocked her hand.
I saw her eyes widen in terror.
It must have been a shock to her, but I didn't care anymore.
I was so sick and tired of them treating me like I was trash.
"How dare you!"
Leticia's voice roared with her hands, moving to my face.
But Oliver's voice scratched, interrupting her.
"I need help here, mum!"
His voice was cold and broken.
Everyone rushed to Selina and assisted Oliver. Shortly the ambulance came.
I followed them from a distance to the ambulance, because I couldn't help but get worried if Selina was truly injured.
She had remained unconscious all that while and even though I wasn't the one that pushed her, I couldn't help but worry.
Shortly after she was rolled into the ambulance, our eyes clicked.
She rolled her eyes at me, giving me a terrible smirk.
"Wait! Did you guys see that?"
I bluffed, pointing at her for everyone to see.
But she had gone back to her present pretense like before, while everyone looked at me like I was crazy.
I guess I was the only one that saw her move her eyes.
I scoffed, dragging my legs back into the house.
Selina was pretending and there was obviously no reason to remain outside.
And even if she was injured, it would have been deserving for her.
I was only a bit worried because I didn't know how I'd clear my name if she was deeply hurt.
I quickly dashed into my room and locked the door. I began to pack my belongings while I waited for the drama to be over.
Finally, Oliver joined the ambulance while Leticia and Sane drove behind them.
"I'll leave and come back to sort things with my husband."
I muttered to myself with heavy eyes. I still couldn't believe all that was happening.
******
My hands clumsily pressed the bell button again after checking for the fifth time that I was in the right apartment.
I tapped my feet to the floor hurriedly, waiting to be received.
I had stood there for over ten minutes waiting for Laura to get to the door since she wouldn't take my calls.
Zane opened the door instead, almost immediately after the fifth ring.
His face was tightened into a scowl, and I didn't know why.
"Hi, where's Laura?".
I blurted, while trying to bring my luggage closer to him to help me with.
"I'll call her." He said, and tried to close the door.
"Wait, we're getting inside together, just help me in, I'll meet Laura inside."
I said, while pulling my luggage closer, not quick to notice the growl on his face.
But he took another distasteful glance at me, "I'll call her for you."
He growled again and jammed the door to my face.
Just then it occured to me that Zane was actually giving me a cold shoulder.
"Have I done anything wrong?"
I muttered sadly to myself as I stared at the closed door before me.
Laura came out immediately and rushed to hug me, "my darling, I heard what happened. I'm so so sorry. "
She was almost crying, leaving me to wonder what could be the matter.
"What happened where?"
I asked, feigning ignorance. Yes something happened but I hadn't told her yet.
"That Oliver divorced you."
"Yes.."
Holding her tightly I stared at her to tell me how she got to know.
"How did you find out?"
"Sane posted it on Instagram, I'm so sorry my poor friend. "
"Wait? Sane did what?"
My eyes rolled as I remembered that I had seen her recording.
I didn't pay much attention to her, and I never thought something like that would come out of her holding her phone to record.
"Tell me you're kidding Laura."
I growled as I took out my phone to check my Instagram.
And as soon as I turned on my internet connection, my phone started buzzing with notifications.
"Dr Oliver divorced Dr Gwen!!?"
"Omg!!! Seems like there's trouble in paradise."
"I told you Dr Oliver is too hot for that average looking Dr Gwen. I mean she might have the brains, but she doesn't look like who should bag such the hottest doctor in Chicago."
"Dr Gwen pushed a lady down the stairs? Didn't know she was such a cruel and vile human."
I stared at those messages, tears flooding down my cheeks as I scrolled through Sane's comment section.
Bloggers and news stations have carried the news too, while some crazy lovers of Oliver had already made it to my dm, threatening, and mocking me.
Laura snatched the phone off my hands. Gently, she pulled me to the love garden beside the house and made me sit.
"Come here." Placing my head on her shoulders, she began to console me, but I cried harder.
"Why would Sane put such a thing--"
"No, no, Gwen, I won't let you wail over that spoilt brat. She's not relevant as long as I am concerned. What we should talk about now is how to get you back to your feet."
I nodded at the words of my best friend, but if only it was as easy as she said them.
"But I didn't push her, Laura, I know you believe me when I say, I didn't even touch her. She just rolled down the stairs herself just to create this drama."
I whimpered slowly.
Laura took me closely, "I believe you Gwen, trust me you don't have to explain a thing to me."
"Now she made everyone think I'm capable of such a vile act, and you know it's not good for my career."
Laura just nodded sadly. Obviously she has sensed the implications of those accusations on my career.
I'm a doctor and there was no way my patients would feel comfortable with me if they're made to believe I was capable of pushing someone down the stairs.
"Listen, Gwen..."
"Laura, and I don't look that bad right?"
I whimpered again, while referring to the penultimate comment I read.
"I'm a 5'7ft tall lady. Slim and curvy in the right places.
I have amber-brown coloured eyes with blonde hair which I always pack into a ponytail.
My face is chiseled too, Laura, how do I look terrible?"
Laura just ranked her hands over my hair, "Gwen, we should be more concerned about where you're going to stay right now."
"What do you mean by where I'm going to stay?"
I lifted my face to look at her, and her face wasn't encouraging. She was shaking her head, almost scared to mention what she wanted to say.
