Rising From Betrayal: The Untouchable Heiress

Author: Elizabeth
Genre: Romance
My father called a formal family meeting to discuss my upcoming wedding to Brett Merritt, the town's golden boy. But instead of planning the ceremony, they announced our engagement was canceled. My father and the Merritts had agreed to let Brett marry my half-sister, Brynlee, all to steal my late mother's legendary motorcycle garage. Brett leaned in and whispered a secret proposal. "You can be my Sweetbutt. I'll treat you just like before." He wanted me as a disposable side piece. When I publicly rejected him, he broke into my bedroom that night to assault me and force me to sign over my inheritance. I fought back and snapped his arm with a heavy-duty wrench. Desperate to appease the Merritts and save his failing business, my own father ordered his hired thugs to kill me quietly and leave no trace. I stood facing my executioners, my heart turning to ice. I couldn't understand how my own flesh and blood could trade my life for a business deal and his new wife's triumphant smile. But just as the goons reached for me, a Nevada State Police cruiser screeched to a halt outside. The troopers didn't come to arrest me; they came with a protective mandate and an emergency summons from the Governor-my childhood friend. Looking at my father's terrified face, I knew my counterattack had just begun.

Chapter 1

EVA BENTLEY POV:

I sat in the solitary armchair in the center of the living room, feeling less like a daughter in her own home and more like a prisoner awaiting a firing squad.

Across from me sat the Merritt family-Franklin, Eleanor, and their golden-boy son, Brett.

Beside them sat my father, Cyrus Bentley, wringing his hands so hard his knuckles were white.

His eyes darted nervously around the room, desperately avoiding mine. His wife-my stepmother, Ramona-sat glued to his side, and next to her was her daughter, my half-sister Brynlee.

Brynlee sat with her head bowed, her slender shoulders trembling delicately. She looked the picture-perfect part of a terrified, fragile little wallflower.

"Cyrus," Franklin began, his voice dripping with absolute, unquestionable authority. "We are here today to resolve the matter of Brett and Eva's engagement."

My stomach plummeted. The carefully orchestrated humiliation was finally kicking off.

"The rumors in town have spiraled completely out of control," Franklin continued coldly. "The whispers of Eva's infidelity have severely damaged the Merritt family's reputation."

Eleanor Merritt, Brett's mother, tapped a fingernail painted the color of fresh blood against her porcelain teacup. The sharp clink echoed loudly. "We simply cannot have a woman with a 'Sweetbutt' reputation becoming Brett's 'Old Lady.' It would be a disaster for our family, and an absolute liability for our future business."

At those words, Brynlee's shoulders shook a little harder. She cast a timid, upward glance at Brett.

Brett, meanwhile, looked thoroughly agonized. He met my gaze, his crystal-blue eyes swimming with apology. "Eva, I'm so sorry," he murmured. "You know I've always loved you. But the pressure from the family..."

It was an Oscar-worthy performance. I practically had to bite my tongue to keep from applauding. He loved me? Right. Just as much as he loved screwing Brynlee last night.

Franklin waved off his son's theatrical grief, delivering the final blow. "Therefore, we have decided to dissolve the engagement between Brett and Eva. However, as compensation and to ensure our two families remain aligned, we propose that Brett marry Brynlee instead."

Ramona's face instantly lit up with predatory joy. She squeezed Brynlee's hand tightly.

Beside them, Cyrus's face turned the color of wet ash. He swallowed hard, nodding like a pathetic puppet. "I... I agree. It is the best arrangement for now."

Every pair of eyes locked onto me, hungry for the breakdown. They were waiting for the tears, the screaming, the desperate begging.

Instead, I took a slow breath and stood up. I looked around, taking in every single one of their hypocritical faces.

My gaze finally landed on Brett. He was still giving me that deeply wounded, heartbroken stare, as if he were the true victim in this twisted tragedy.

"Eva, this is just temporary," he breathed urgently. "Brynlee is just for show. You're the only woman in my heart. You can be my Sweetbutt, and I'll treat you just like before... maybe even better."

Sweetbutt.

The word cracked across my face like a physical slap.It broke the very last, pathetic sliver of illusion I had ever harbored for this man.

A laugh spilled from my lips.

"Brett Merritt," I said, my voice clear and ringing off the high ceilings, making damn sure every person in the room heard me. "Do you honestly believe that without the Merritt family's protection, I, Eva Bentley, couldn't survive?"

Franklin and Eleanor stiffened, their smug expressions darkening.

I turned my attention to Franklin. "An engagement? As of today, there is no engagement between me and the Brett."

I pivoted back to Brett, holding his gaze as I delivered my final verdict. "I will never, ever be anyone's Sweetbutt."

The color drained from Brynlee's face instantly. She hadn't expected me to bite back so fiercely. Brett's face mottled with a mix of pale shock and angry red. He lunged forward to grab my arm, but I easily sidestepped, leaving him clutching at empty air.

I turned to Cyrus. "Father. Is this what you wanted to see? Trading your own daughter's dignity for a seat at the Merritts' business table?"

Cyrus choked on a breath, his jaw working uselessly as he failed to form a single word.

I swept my gaze over the room one last time. "Your little performance is over. Now, get out of my house."

And by my house, I didn't mean Cyrus's. I meant the estate we were standing in-the one left solely to me by my mother.

Eleanor shot up from the sofa, practically vibrating with rage. She pointed a trembling finger at me. "You ungrateful little-"

I didn't even blink at her. I turned my back, walked straight to the grand double doors, pulled them wide open, and gave them a mock-polite gesture to leave.

The air in the room froze solid. None of them had factored in the possibility that I would be the one kicking them out.

Finally, Franklin broke the suffocating tension. With a disdainful scoff, he buttoned his suit jacket and marched out, his family trailing closely behind him.

Brett lingered at the back of the pack. Before stepping over the threshold, he stopped and looked over his shoulder. The fake affection was completely gone. In its place was a chilling stare of pure, unadulterated hatred and a silent threat.

I held his gaze, my face a mask of stone, and slammed the door shut, locking all the noise and the trash outside.

Chapter 2

EVA BENTLEY POV:

The moment the heavy front door clicked shut behind the Merritts, the polite parlor masquerade shattered.

Cyrus whipped around, his eyes blazing with fury. "Eva! Do you have any idea what you just did? You ruined months of hard work with the Merritt family!"

Right on cue, Ramona launched into her theatrical routine. She pulled Brynlee into a protective embrace, wailing, "My poor, sweet girl! What is she going to do now? After the scene Eva just caused, how will the Merritts ever look at us the same way?"

Brynlee buried her face in her mother's shoulder, instantly reverting to the fragile, innocent victim for my father's benefit. Her tears flowed on command. "I'm so sorry, sister... I didn't mean for any of this to happen... I had no idea..."

I watched their little three-person circus with absolute, icy clarity.

"Hard work?" I threw Cyrus's words back at him. "You mean the hard work of selling me off like a piece of livestock just so Brynlee could steal my spot?"

Cyrus choked, his face turning an ugly, mottled plum. "How dare you speak to me like that! Everything I do is for this family!"

"For this family, or for yourself?" I stepped forward, meeting his glare without flinching. "You need the Merritt money to plug the massive holes in your sinking business. And the Merritts? All they want in return is the vehicle modification shop my mother left me."

The words dropped like a bomb. Cyrus and Ramona froze, the color draining from their faces. They clearly hadn't expected me to see right through their little arrangement.

Cyrus forced a scoff, desperately trying to maintain his authority. "Nonsense! Why on earth would the Merritts want that rundown shack?"

"A rundown shack?" I laughed coldly. "Bentley's Chrome Heart is a legend. My mother built it with her bare hands. Anyone who is anyone in the Nevada MC scene knows exactly what it's worth. It's not just a chop shop; it's a brand. A symbol. It comes with a twenty-year client list and exclusive channels for rare parts you couldn't even dream of getting your hands on."

Ramona's eyes shifted nervously. It was obvious she understood the true value of that property far better than my father did.

Realizing intimidation wasn't going to work, Cyrus pivoted. His tone softened. "Eva, listen to me. What's done is done. Just... accept this arrangement for now. Do it for me. You can still live here, you can keep the shop, but you just need to... cooperate with Brett."

Bile rose in my throat. "Cooperate? You mean bend over and become his dirty little secret? His mistress?"

Cyrus said nothing. He was perfectly fine with an arrangement that stripped me of every ounce of my dignity.

A profound, freezing chill settled in my chest. I turned my back on them. "This is not up for debate," I stated, heading straight for the stairs.

"Stop right there!" Cyrus roared at my retreating back. "Eva Bentley, do not forget who the master of this house is!"

I didn't even break my stride. This place hadn't been my home for a long, long time.

Once inside my bedroom, I threw the deadbolt and leaned back against the heavy wood, taking a long, shuddering breath.

Crying was for the weak. My mother had taught me early on that in a world of oil and steel, tears only make the parts rust.

I walked over to the window and looked down at the detached garage sitting on the edge of the estate property. It was my mother's blood, sweat, and tears. It was my last stronghold. And I would be damned before I let anyone rip it from my hands.

Pulling out my phone, I quickly fired off an encrypted text to my best friend, Mia Stone. Mia was a bartender at 'The Vulture's Nest'-the most notorious biker bar in town. She knew everyone, heard everything, and most importantly, she was fiercely loyal.

The message was brief: Code Chrome. Secure the ledgers. All of them. Now.

"Code Chrome" was a pre-arranged failsafe between us, meaning the garage was under a maximum-level threat.

Those ledgers held more than just financial records; they contained my mother's private contacts-major MC presidents, lone-wolf riders, and underground parts suppliers. They were the true soul of Bentley's Chrome Heart. I couldn't risk Cyrus or the Merritts getting their greedy hands on them.

A moment later, the phone buzzed in my palm. Mia's reply: Gus has secured them. Done.

I caught my reflection in the vanity mirror. My green eyes were burning with a cold, unforgiving fire. They thought I was some sheltered princess they could push around and manipulate.

They were dead wrong. I was my mother's daughter. It wasn't delicate, aristocratic blood running through my veins; it was high-octane gasoline.

A movement outside caught my eye. Down in the courtyard, Brett and Brynlee were putting on a show of taking a romantic stroll, but their eyes kept drifting toward the garage. Brynlee was practically glued to Brett's side, wearing a sickeningly triumphant smirk.

I pulled the blackout curtains shut, severing their line of sight.

This was a war I had to win. For my mother's legacy, and for my own survival.

I dropped to my knees and reached under my bed, dragging out an old, battered toolbox my mother had left me. I popped the rusty latches.

Bside wrenches or screwdrivers,it held a set of tactical self-defense gear and thick, banded stacks of emergency cash.

Chapter 3

EVA BENTLEY POV:

The estate was not quiet that night. I could hear the muffled sounds of Cyrus and Ramona arguing downstairs, punctuated by Brynlee's theatrical sobs.

I didn't sleep. Dressed in black leggings and a tight-fitting tank top, I sat in the darkness, the cold weight of a chrome butterfly-a custom part my mother had made-a comforting presence in my hand. It kept me sharp. I knew they wouldn't let it go. The confrontation this afternoon was just the opening round.

Around midnight, a faint noise from downstairs broke the silence. Not arguing. It was the soft, metallic scrape of something out of place.

I held my breath, moving silently to my door and peering through the peephole. The hallway was dark and unnervingly still. My room was at the end of the hall, but it had a small fire escape ladder that led down to the back garden, near the garage.

Suddenly, a soft scratching sound came from my window. My heart seized.

I crept to the window, hiding behind the heavy curtain and peering through a tiny gap.

A dark figure was scaling the drainpipe on the side of the house. The movements were clumsy but determined. In the moonlight, I recognized the face.

Brett Merritt.

The audacity of him, breaking into my home. A wave of fury and disgust washed over me.

I stayed silent, watching as he reached my windowsill and fumbled, trying to pry the window open. The lock had been reinforced long ago. He only succeeded in making more noise before giving up.

He moved toward the balcony. The old sliding glass door was a much easier target.

I retreated into the shadows of the room as he expertly used a thin blade to jimmy the lock. The door slid open without a sound. Brett slipped inside, the reek of whiskey and cheap perfume clinging to him.

He must have thought I was asleep, because he went straight for my bed.

When he found it empty, he froze, then let out a low, angry curse.

"Eva!" he hissed into the darkness. "I know you're not asleep! Come out!"

I stepped out of the shadows and switched on a small lamp by the bed. The dim light illuminated his face, flushed red with alcohol and rage.

"We've already broken off our engagement, Brett. What are you even doing here?" I asked, my voice cold.

His aggressive posture faltered, and his expression morphed into a mask of fake sympathy. "Eva, babe... I'm here because my heart aches for you," he murmured, taking a step closer. "Look, I know my mother's words hurt you today. But she's my mother. You need to be the bigger person and try to understand where she's coming from."

Bile rose in my throat at his pathetic attempt to excuse his mother's cruelty. I wanted to scream, to wipe that condescending look off his face. But I needed to know what he was really after. Forcing down my fury, I lowered my gaze and let my shoulders slump, pretending his words had broken through my defenses. I gave him a weak, submissive nod.

Seeing my resistance crumble, Brett smiled, his chest puffing out with arrogant satisfaction. "That's a good girl. Now, to make things right and keep the peace, all you have to do is sign over half of your mother's inheritance to Brynlee. Just do that, and I'll smooth everything over."

I feigned hesitation, buying time to get more information. "Half the assets? What are you talking about? A few old bikes and tools?"

Brett's patience snapped. "Don't play dumb, Eva! Your mother left more than just scrap metal! Ramona told me everything. Your father has a detailed list of the assets-the properties, the offshore accounts!"

Ramona. Of course. She must have snooped through Cyrus's files and seen my mother's will.

Before I could respond, Brett stepped into my space, his sweaty hands aggressively grabbing my waist. "Come on, Eva," he coaxed, his eyes darkening with lust. "Let's stop fighting. Your reputation is completely trashed. No other man is ever going to want you now. Just give in to me. Let me put a baby in you. Once you're pregnant, everyone will have to accept it, and you can legitimately be my sweetbutt."

I watched him, disgust radiating from my eyes like chips of ice. "And if I say no?"

His patience evaporated, his face twisting into an ugly snarl. "Say no?" He lunged at me. "Then I'll just have to find my own way to make you 'agree'!"

His intent was unmistakable. He was going to assault me, right here, to force me into submission.

I was ready. As he lunged, I didn't retreat. I moved toward him.

I dropped low, ducking under his grasping hands, and drove my elbow hard into his ribs.

Brett let out a choked grunt, doubling over in pain, his face a mask of disbelief.
