Diane's POV
I stared out across the vast terrain of nothingness, watching the sunset as the sky put on its final show for the day. Today was my only day off, and after I helped my parents at home, they allowed me to come hang out at my favorite spot behind our house at the top of the hills, which overlooked the Red Moon Pack border.
Our house is located at the far east end of the pack territory. People rarely come in this direction, so I usually hide here to avoid being bullied and spend some alone time with myself.
Ever since my sixteenth birthday, when it was confirmed that I was unable to shift, I have been living the life of a relegated person in the pack.
There has not been a single day when I have not been called weak, ugly, pathetic, a disgrace, a loser, and so many other hurtful words by my fellow pack members. I have lost all my friends and was even being bullied and abused by most of them, except for Josh and Jessie, Alpha Clinton's children. Aside from my parents, the both of them have been my rock through it all.
I sat on the ground, hugged my knees, and rested my chin on my forearm. I continued to stare off into space, wondering what my life would have been like if I had gotten my wolf two years ago. As I immersed myself in my thoughts, I noticed something running towards me. I squinted my eyes to get a better look, then I realized it looked to be some dog or coyote in the distance.
Although there were many of those in this area of the pack, at the rate that this one was moving, I knew it was a regular canine. Then the sudden smell of something rotten permeated my nostrils. I swallowed, feeling sick. We were taught from a very young age what that smell meant.
"Rogues!" I cried out.
I stumbled backwards, trying to get up as fast as I could. I forced myself to stand steady and started to run as fast as my legs could carry me, but without a wolf, there was a limit to how fast I could run. My legs burn as I push myself to run even faster, trying not to stumble over logs, holes in the ground, and large rocks. But unluckily my foot got stuck in a small hole.
I cried out as I looked back and noticed more swarms of rogues on the field. There were so many! I got my leg free and stumbled backwards. The sound of a threatening growl made me turn around slowly, and I came face to face with a massive rogue that smelt like sewage.
Drool was dropping from the rogue's lips. It reared back on its hind legs, ready to pounce on me, but right before it did, a huge brown wolf leapt over me and tackled the rogue. I felt my heart skip. I didn't know whose wolf that was, but I was glad it came on time. I stood up and started running towards our house.
Soon I could hear the snarls of the rogues gaining on me, so I headed for the pack house instead, knowing that the rogues would catch up with me if I should head home. "Rogues! Rogues!" I kept screaming as I continued running towards the pack house. Soon the alarm to signal an attack on the pack came on, and all pack warriors started coming out from the pack house.
I continued to run towards the pack house, hoping to get into one of the bunkers for safety, but in my attempt to get there, I was knocked over by a pack warrior who was transforming into wolf form. The force had me rolling on the ground. When I looked up, I saw the hordes of rogues coming in my direction, but before I could do anything, a wolf grabbed my hand and started dragging me away.
I turned to see a familiar black wolf dragging me away from the fight.
"Mom!" I cried out.
She shifted back to her human form. "Diane! You need to run," she said and started shoving me away.
"Mom! Where is Dad? And I need to go to the bunker."
"Honey your Dad is safe and fine, he's fighting with the other warriors to defend the pack. And you can't go to the pack house, it is under attack and no one is making it to the bunker."
"What are we going to do Mom?"
"You need to run Diane. You need to get as far away from here as you can."
"What about you, Mom? I can't leave you and Dad here. And it will only be a matter of time before they catch up with me since I can't shift into my wolf."
"You can't stay here with us, Diane. It's not safe here, okay. Now this is what we're going to do," she said, pulling me to a corner where she kept her bag.
"Diane! Go climb that tree now and stay up there," my mother said, trying her best to remain calm as she pointed towards a very tall tree that wasn't too far from the pack house. Then she pulled out an anti-scent spray from her bag and tossed it to me.
"Climb as far as you can, and make sure you're covered. Diane, promise me that when you climb up, you won't come down no matter what happens. Promise me, Diane." My mother said with a shaky voice and tears now forming in her eyes.
"Okay, Mom, I promise. But what about you? You can't stay here; we need to leave this place together, and you have to mind link Dad too." I said, still not wanting to leave my parents.
"Diane, your father has to stay and fight, and I need to make sure that you are not followed. I promise I'll be with you soon. Now go, Diane!" She yelled and pushed me away.
I move on autopilot, doing what she says. I spray myself with the anti-scent spray so they can't scent me near the tree, run to it, and climb up. I'm running on pure adrenaline. When I get up as far as my hands and legs would take me, I look down, trying to find a branch where I could get a general idea of what's going on while still staying hidden.
I wish I hadn't looked. When I looked down, I saw four rogues running right to where my mother's black wolf was hiding in the bushes close to the pack house. At that moment I wanted to send a mindlink to warn her, but I couldn't as I had no wolf. At that point, I felt totally useless.
At first, it seemed like my mother would be fine as she jumped out of the bush and attacked the first rogue that approached her, she was even able to beat the rogue. But my heart skipped when the three other rogues surrounded my mother. It all happened in slow motion as the three rogues jumped in sync on my mother, ripping and tearing her to pieces.
I'm frozen as I stare at the scattered pieces of my mother's body in horror. When I can't stand the sight anymore, I try to turn away without creating too much movement that might draw attention and silently sob to myself. My heart felt like it was burning alive in my chest, this despair would swallow me whole.
I stayed at the top of the tree sobbing my eyes out silently until it was midnight. Few of the rogues were leaving now, while some were still slaughtering any members of the pack they could find. The stench of blood and dead bodies is making me sick. All my family and friends are dead. I open my eyes and look down, I see movement from below the tree, I know I have to be quiet and stay still.
I wait for a while till I hear nothing below, then I climb down the tree, jump from the last branch, and land straight on my feet. I look around and walk over to the devastation of my pack. Without being told, I knew that our pack had been taken over by rogues, and either everyone was probably dead or very few were still alive and were hiding, but that wasn't my business anymore.
I need to get out of here so I don't end up like my parents. I couldn't let the sacrifices they made for me be in vain. I am now a rogue.
Diane's POV
2 months later.
It has been a week since I turned eighteen, and not once did I leave my wooden cabin in the forest. I had been lying down in the middle of the mess I had made. Crying myself to sleep and waking up only to cry again. The truth is after that rogue attack two months ago, my life has not been the same.
We were very few that escaped from our pack, and while looking for a place to settle down, we met a group of werewolf teens my age, residing in Briarwood City, a city that was full of all kinds of supernatural beings.
The teens were also rogues. They were nice to us and even taught us how to spar and steal whatever we needed. Even though I couldn't shift like the rest of the group, I kind of got good at it, but it wasn't something I was happy doing because I knew my parents would never have approved of me doing such.
So whenever I made extra money from selling what I stole, I would go back to the store I stole from and pay them back for the food or toiletries I stole before. The old lady who owned the store, Mrs Sandra, was usually baffled by my behavior. Seeing that I was different from the rest of the group, she offered me the wooden cabin at the far back of her house in the forest.
After living with the group of teens for a month, I decided to accept Mrs Sandra's offer because I didn't want to continue living the life of a thief. Mrs Sandra also offered me a job at her store, where I made some extra money for myself. But ever since my parent's death, I have started having trust issues.
It scared me because no one was here to protect me anymore. All I have right now is myself and my wolf, who I met a week ago. Realizing that my parents weren't lying when they told me back then that I would get my wolf on my eighteenth birthday and that it was a special wolf was more of the reason why I missed them more now.
I have waited eagerly for this day to come when I would celebrate my wolf with my family, but the day has come and gone, and there was no one to celebrate it with. My wolf, Raven, was a rare snow-white wolf and was special just as my dad had told me back then. Raven had also warned me that we are not allowed to shift during the day for our safety.
Even though I had no idea about what she meant, I had to follow her advice because she's the only family I've got now, and I know she only wants what's best for me.
"Diane, please stand up. I can't let you stay like this anymore. You've got to move on and live your life. I know you loved your parents very much, I can see that in your memories, but you can't keep wasting away like this. You need to heal and move on. I also know for a fact that your parents wouldn't want you to waste your life like this." My wolf, Raven, said.
"I know Raven, but it's hard. I just can't stop thinking about them or all the wonderful memories we shared."
"Why don't we go out for a run? Release all the anger and frustration in running. Maybe that would free your mind." Raven suggested.
"Is it safe for us to go out for a run by this time? It's not even close to 1 am like we agreed. It's just a few minutes past 11 pm." I replied to her, trying to come up with an excuse not to go out.
"No, no, no. No excuses, Diane. We are going out, and that's it. Besides, it's already dark enough, so our chances of being caught are very low. Now let's go," she said.
I sighed, knowing that I didn't have a choice but to do her bidding. She probably knows what's best for us. I opened the door and walked to a clearing in the forest, and then I carefully removed my dress and underwear and folded them neatly into a pile.
I took a deep breath and then let Raven take control of our mind and body. I started to feel my bones break. I let out a little scream and fell on my knees. The pain was unbearable. It was like breaking all of your bones at the same time. This is our second time shifting, and the pain still feels unbearable, like the first.
I fought the urge to throw up and focused on letting go of my control. Slowly, fur began sprouting from my skin, giving me a burning sensation as though my entire body was on fire. After a few minutes of what felt like a life-and-death situation, I was standing on all fours, my white fur shimmering under the bright moonlight.
Once Raven fully came forward, she stretched her legs and dug her claws into the grass and dirt. She shook her fur loose as if she hadn't seen the outside world in ages and trotted along the trees to get the blood flowing in her legs. Gradually Raven began to gain speed, and her trot turned into a full-on sprint in seconds.
After running for what seemed like an hour, we got tired. I stopped by a lake to have a drink, when it started drizzling and gradually it turned into a heavy rain. I shifted back to my human form and had a dip in the lake. Instead of running back in my wolf form, I took a jog in my human form.
"Diane! Stop!" Raven yelled in my head.
"What is it, Raven? Is there a problem? Are we in danger?" I asked, scared by the way she had yelled in my head.
"Do you smell that?" She asked ignoring my questions.
"Smell what?" I asked, raising my eyebrows.
"Can't you smell it? The forest is reeking with blood." She exclaimed.
Then it hit me, like an ice-cold bucket of water - blood. Someone was in the forest with me and that person was close by. Suddenly my heart started pounding like It wanted to escape my chest.
I stood behind a tree as I stared at nothing but the dark forest.
"Shit! I don't know where I am and I can barely see a thing in this rain," I said.
I froze in my place when I heard a twig snap.
"What should I do? Should I run?" I asked Raven but got no reply.
The smell of blood filling the air made me scrunch my nose. I peeked behind the tree as I scanned my surroundings. This could be a trap, I said in my mind as I carefully walked behind the trees while trying to locate where the blood smell was coming from.
"Turns out you're such a coward," Raven whispered in my head.
I was about to reply her when I heard the snapping of twigs again. I stopped in my tracks and looked around. The sound was getting closer, and I still hadn't locate where it was coming from. I let out a scream when a warthog ran through the bush, causing me to stumble upon a root.
Wait, the root isn't soft.
Chills crept all over my body as I slowly turned my head to the side.
"Holy shit! It's a man!" I covered my mouth with my hands to avoid screaming again.
I carefully stood up, not wanting to find out if he was dead or alive. I turned on my heel and was about to leave when I heard him groan. My heart was beating so fast as I stood there dead in my tracks. With my eyes glued to the man, I carefully stepped away from him.
"Wait, Diane, and focus," said Raven.
"Focus on what?" I asked, feeling irritated.
"The scent," she replied.
I sniffed the air and was hit in the face by the most amazing scent. The scent is very intoxicating. It's as if the fresh scent of a forest after rainfall is combined with the warm, musky sweetness of amber, laced with a hint of spice that tingles the senses. But it was a little bit faint due to the smell of blood and dirt.
Raven whispers the word to me, "MATE!"
Diane's POV
"What! Do you mean this man here is my mate?"
"Yes! If you doubt me you can touch him and see for yourself." Raven replied.
"But what if this man is just pretending to be dead or unconscious? What if he saw us when we shifted and now wants to capture us, just like you said they would if they found out about us? Maybe he's just waiting for me to come closer so he can attack me?" I asked, unsure about touching the man.
"Trust me, Raven, nothing is going to happen," said Raven.
"Okay."
I took a deep breath, but instantly regretted it when the smell of blood hit my nose again. With slow and steady hands, I stretched my hand to touch him. I immediately removed my hand as if he had some kind of plague when I felt the sparks, and a sweet sensation spread through my body.
"You're, right Raven. He's out mate," I exclaimed.
I was overwhelmed with joy and excitement, but it didn't last as fear and anxiety took over immediately.
What if he rejects me like my pack did? I won't be able to live with it. My heart has already suffered enough pain. I can't add more. I closed my eyes as I willed myself to leave.
"What are you doing, Diane?" Raven asked. "You can't leave him here, what if he bleeds to death? You have to help him, he's our mate for goddess sake."
"What if he rejects me and starts treating me the way I was treated in our pack back then? You and I both know that I won't be able to survive that. So I can't risk him finding out about me, and I think the best thing to do is to run as far away as possible from here." I muttered.
"Get your senses together, Diane, and stop acting dumb. He's our mate, if he dies, we die too." She yelled in my head, causing me to flinch.
Oh shit! My eyes widen in shock as the reality of her words hits me. Now I was drowning in fear and worry. I needed to think of something fast, and I had to act fast.
The longer I stay in this forest, the higher the chances of me being killed or attacked by whosoever did this to my mate. Also, there is the possibility of my mate bleeding to death. So I decided to take the risk of taking him back to the wooden cabin.
Carrying my mate back to the cabin turned out to be the hardest job I have ever done in my life. Plus, the tingling sensation from the mate bond didn't make it any easier. After an hour of carrying him on my back and navigating through the forest, I finally arrived at the entrance of my cabin.
I cleared some of the mess I made and laid him down while I quickly searched for a first aid kit. After successfully finding the first aid kit, I started cleaning his wound with warm water and a towel. Cleaning the blood off his body proved to be a lot more difficult. Every time our skin would touch, my hormones would go wild. If only there was a way to turn off the mate bond, I would have done it an hour ago.
When I saw the stab wound on his chest, my heart clenched. It looked like he was stabbed with a silver knife laced with wolfsbane. For him to still be alive and breathing means he's a high-ranked wolf, probably an Alpha or a Beta. If he was an Omega, he'd probably be dead before we got here.
Once I was done cleaning his wound, I bandaged it so it could heal faster. I know in a few hours from now the wolfsbane will become less effective in his system, and his wolf would be able to heal him faster. After I had cleaned his whole body completely, I carried him off the floor and lay him on the bed; then I sat next to him, staring at his sleeping face.
I was about to stand up from the bed when my mate engulfed me in a hug from behind.
"Mate!" He groaned
Sparks erupted throughout my body. It suddenly clouded my mind with lust.
"What's your name?" He asked. His voice was hoarse, yet it sounded so sexy.
I swallowed hard, trying my best to find my voice. "Diane." I finally whispered when I found my voice.
"Diane." He said like he was testing my name out.
I didn't know why, but the way he said my name sounded as sexy as hell. I wanted to ask his name, but I was too scared to even talk.
"My name is Jayden, the Alpha king." He said as if he had just read my mind.
My eyes widen with shock after I rephrase what he just said in my head. Holy shit! The Alpha King?
"I told you, Raven. He's going to reject us."
"Calm down, Diane, and stop overreacting," Raven replied calmly.
The Alpha King is the most vicious and feared werewolf Alpha in the supernatural world, not because he was an Alpha King, but because of his ruthlessness and brutality.
"Raven, are you crazy? How can such a powerful Alpha accept such a weakling like me as his mate?" I asked Raven, but she decided to ignore me.
"Tell me, Diane. How did I end up here?" He asked, burying his face in my neck.
His hot breath brought chills all over my body. Both the chills and the sparks were messing with me.
"I found you unconscious in the forest. You... you were bleeding, so I brought you to my cabin and then cleaned your wounds so that they could heal faster and properly." I stammered.
He suddenly growled, causing me to flinch. I closed my eyes as I waited for him to either reject me or snap my neck.
"What is a young girl like you doing in the forest?" He asked.
"I went to get some wood in the forest, but got lost when it started raining heavily," I replied, partially lying.
I felt him raise his hand from my neck and he turned me around. I stared at the ground as I waited for him to speak.
He cupped my face and lifted my head so that I was looking at him. I tried my best to divert my eyes from anywhere else but him.
His face slowly inched close to my face until I could feel his hot breath on my lips. Before I knew it, he slammed his lips into mine, his kiss hard and consuming. I could barely remember what was happening.
The tingling sensation of the mate bond and too much pleasure clouded my head. Suddenly, my body was begging for his touch.
