Chapter 1 The Betrayal

Ella ran home with joy and excitement. The news she just got gave her great joy. It was long-awaited news.

"I am pregnant!" She whispered to herself.

Oh, how she had longed to hear and say that word, and now her prayers have finally been answered.

"You are pregnant ma'am." She recalled the doctor's voice causing her to squeal out in excitement.

"Doctor, are you sure it's not something else?" She asked, sounding skeptical.

"No ma'am, you are pregnant." The doctor insisted, still smiling.

The cab driver looked at her like she had gone nuts and she just smiled at him. He concluded that whatever had made her squeal like that must be good news so he smiled back at her and focused on his driving.

Ethan and Ella have been eager to have a baby since they got married three years ago. They had tried everything including a failed IVF session which had left her depressed but Ethan had been a source of great comfort to her.

"Look Ella, children will come at the right time, I don't like you being depressed." Ethan had comforted her.

"You don't get it, Ethan, you know how much I love children." Ella Was Astonished by what Ethan was saying.

"Babe, I love you and that's all that matters," Ethan assured.

Even if she were to come back to this life a thousand times, she would still choose Ethan. He was the best thing that had happened to her.

That was what she thought until she got the shock of her life.

She quickly paid the cab driver and ran upstairs to their apartment. She was so eager to let him hear the good news that she felt the elevator would slow her down so she took the stairs and since her adrenaline was high, it was not long before she got to the fourth floor where their apartment was.

She took a quick breath and opened the door. Immediately she entered the house, something felt wrong and she could not place her finger on it.

She moved cautiously in the darkness as she tried to find the light switch. She felt troubled as her heart began to beat faster.

"Was something wrong?" She asked herself quietly.

She had called Ethan's office to tell him the good news but she was told that he had gone home already so she had texted him instead that she had good news she wanted to share with him and then she immediately started coming home. She had expected Ethan to be at home which was why she was surprised to see the lights off.

A dreadful thought seeped into her mind that perhaps something bad had happened to him so she quickly gathered her courage and switched on the light.

The first thing she noticed was a pair of red heels that she knew did not belong to her. Her heartbeat doubled and she felt like she was almost having a heart attack.

"Ethan?.." She called softly as she walked towards their bedroom and then she suddenly stopped.

At first, she thought it was the sound of a cat but then, they did not have a cat in the house they did not have pets because Ethan claimed he was allergic to their hair so having a pet in the house was out of the options.

She would have thought that it was from the neighbors but then, Ethan specifically chose this building because the wall between each apartment was soundproofed. You could only hear sounds from within the apartment but not outside the apartment.

That ruled out option number two. So the sound she heard was coming from the bedroom but if it was not a pet, then what was making the noise? She asked herself.

Cautiously, she continued walking towards the bedroom door as she felt her instincts pushing her there. When she got to the door, the sound became louder and it was not the sound of a cat meowing but that of a female moaning and a male groaning.

"Oh, baby, harder please..." The female voice said.

"Don't worry, just tell me what you want, and I will make sure you are satisfied." The male voice replied.

Ella nearly had a heart attack the moment she heard the voice of the female. The voice was no doubt the voice of Ethan her husband.

The pain of betrayal she felt was worse than the feeling of childlessness that had plagued her for the past three years. The pain washed away every feeling of happiness that she had experienced a few hours back. It took away the joy the news of her pregnancy had brought.

Ethan was cheating on her! The realisation hit her hard and without opening the bedroom door to see things for herself, she fled the house.

Ella ran away as fast as her legs could carry her. She wanted to put as much distance as she could between her and Ethan's sound of betrayal and as she ran, she cried.

Ella finally stopped in front of a minibar.

"Why don't I drink my sorrow away?" She said to herself as she walked into the bar.

Ella ordered some alcohol and started taking them in quick succession. Now so many things began to make sense to her. No wonder Ethan had not been as bothered as she was about their childlessness. He had always told her that it didn't matter if she gave him a child or not and that he did not marry her for her to give birth only but because he genuinely loved her.

"You lied to me! You bloody cheat!" Ella wailed into her drink.

"Hey miss, are you okay?" The bartender asked.

"I'm fine," Ella replied sounding drunk.

The bartender noticed her drunken state and shook his head in pity wondering who was the man that was foolish enough to break the heart of such a beautiful woman.

Ella noticed the stares she was receiving due to her outburst so she drunkenly stood up and paid the bills for the drink. She was lucky enough to have carried her purse with her when she ran out of the house.

Ella came out of the bar and stood at the entrance wondering what she was going to do next. She could not go back to the house at least not in her present drunken state. She told herself that if she was going to confront Ethan, she wanted to do it when she had become sober, collected, and clear-headed.

"Why don't I take a walk to clear my head, then I will be sober enough to deal with that bastard cheat." Ella thought to herself.

She started walking around aimlessly with no particular destination in mind. Soon, she found herself on a lonely tared road, she knew she was lost so she decided to retrace her step with hopes that she would get back to familiar paths.

She started to walk briskly but it seemed the road had suddenly become longer. When she was about to give up, she saw a car coming towards her from behind. She heaved a sigh of relief as she planned to beg the driver to take her back to where she was coming from.

She waved at the car while it was still at a distance with hopes that the driver would notice her on time and stop. The car became closer but at that point, she suddenly realized that something was amiss.

The car was getting close to her but it was not slowing down. It then dawned on her that the driver was not stopping to pick her but it was too late.

The car hit her with full force and she found herself flying in the air. Due to the shock, she was already unconscious before she hit the ground.

Chapter 2 The News

The driver of the car came out and looked around to see if anyone saw what happened. When he was satisfied that nobody was around he then walked towards the unconscious body of Ella. He touched her body and shook her but there was no response from her, then he put one of his fingers under her nose to check if she still breathing but he was relieved to find out that she was not breathing.

He looked around one more time to be sure that he was not seen by anyone before he picked her lifeless body up and carried her in a bridal style to his car. He put her in the back seat of the car and he put her in a sitting position in case he had to pass through any form of supervision from anyone.

The driver entered the car and started driving. He kept driving until he came to a river. He opened the door and came and then she carried her body out of the car and did a last check of the environment. He walked to the river and without thinking twice, he threw her body into the river.

"I'm sorry, but I am following instructions, so just rest in peace." The driver said.

He quickly walked back to the car, and taking out a piece of clothing, he wiped everywhere she might have touched in his car to erase any form of evidence that would lead to her death whenever her body was found.

When he was done he entered the car and drove away. He kept driving till he came to a safe place and he brought out his phone and stopped the car. He dialed a number and the person picked up the first ring.

'Hello.' The voice at the other end said.

'The job is done.' The man informed.

'Good but are you sure she will not survive it?' The voice asked.

'She was already unconscious when I hit her, there is no way she should be able to swim out of the river.' The man assured.

'Good, you will get your balance immediately.'

The voice said.

'Thank you, boss, in a few days you will hear the good news of her body being found.' The man said confidentially.

'I trust you.' The voice said and ended the call.

Two minutes after the call ended, the man's phone beeped and when he checked it, he saw his balance payment had been sent. With a smile on his face, he drove off.

Ethan came back from work and opened the door to the house in excitement. His wife Ella had texted him that she had good news that she wanted to share with him. He had left work early to come home but one of his high-profile clients had called him to let him know that he wanted to have an urgent meeting with him. He had to put a hold on his coming early and went to see the man.

"Strange," Ethan said to himself as he met the house dark.

He turned on the light and saw the house in complete silence. Usually, by this time, Ella would have already been at home and making dinner for the both of them.

"Honey." He called out but he was only created by silence.

He walked to the kitchen to check if she was there but she was not. Then he went to the bedroom to check but she was still not there. It wasn't until he checked the bathroom and the balcony and still did not find her that he began to feel uneasy.

He brought out his phone from his pocket and called her number and her phone started ringing. He heard the phone ringing in the apartment and then he followed the sound until he came back to the sitting room and found the phone lying on the couch. She was not with her phone. He decided to call her sister.

'Hello, brother-in-law.' The voice on the other end said sweetly.

'Hello Tania.' Ethan replied.

'You are calling me this late at night, hope all is well.' Tania said.

'It's Ella, I can't find her.' Ethan said with worry in his voice.

'I don't understand, what do you mean you can't find her?' Tania asked with confusion written in her voice.

'I came back him from work this night, I could not find her anywhere in the house and when I called her phone, I discovered that it was in the house.' Ethan said.

'That's strange, Ella is not someone who would leave the house without her phone and also without telling anyone about where she was going.' Tania said.

'Exactly my point! That's exactly why I'm scared. This is strange, she has never behaved this way before since I knew her.' Ethan told Tania.

'Wait, did you guys have any misunderstanding that would have made her act in this manner?' Tania asked.

'No, in fact, she texted me that she had good news to tell me at home, but I was delayed by a client and came back late only for me to find the house empty and her phone in the living room.' Ethan answered.

'In that case, I think you have to call the police and file for missing person report.' Tania advised.

'Alright, thank you for the idea, I will do just want.' Ethan said and ended the call.

Ethan found it strange that Tania was not as bothered about her missing sister like the way he was. He knew Ella was very close to her sister and it was even through Tania whom he had been friends that he met Ella. Ethan did not want to dwell much on Tania's less concerned attitude, so he put the thoughts out of his mind and called the police.

'Hello, how can we be of help to you?' The officer who picked up the call asked.

'I want to file a missing person report.' Ethan said.

'How long have the person been missing?' The officer asked Ethan.

'A few hours ago.' Ethan answered.

'I'm sorry, but you can only file a missing person report after the person has been confirmed missing for more more 24 hours.' The officer said and Ethan ended the call frustrated.

It had been three days since Ella's sudden disappearance and Ethan had not stopped looking for her with the help of Tania. Tania had been a source of strength and comfort to him and he was grateful for her help. He had reported again to the police and he told them the clothes she had worn that fateful day and the police had assured him that they were putting in their best effort to make sure that she was found.

The dreaded news came three days after her disappearance. Ethan had become a shadow of his former self since Ella's mysterious disappearance and he was also refusing to go to work.

He had just gotten out of the bathroom that morning when he heard his phone ringing. He checked the caller ID and saw that it was Tania.

'Hello Tania.' He said with forced cheerfulness in his voice because he did not want Tania to be worried that he was being depressed.

'Oh, Ethan, you have to come now.' Tania said and the way her voice sounded made Ethan freeze in fear.

'What's going on Ella?' He asked fearfully.

'It's Ella.' She repeated and her voice broke.

'What is it about Ella, has she been found?' Ethan asked.

'Her clothes were found floating on the river by some fishermen this morning and they called the cops who called me.' Tania revealed and broke into tears.

'What?!' Ethan exclaimed.

Chapter 3 A New Beginning

Ethan dropped the phone in shock and it fell on the bed.

'Hello, Ethan, are you still there?' Tania asked.

Ethan was too shocked to answer but he knew that if he did not answer, he was going to add to Tania's grief and worry so he forced himself to pick up the phone.

'Yes... Tania, I am still here.' He answered trying to calm her down.

'Did you hear what I just said?' She asked him.

'Yes, I heard you and I will be there very soon, just text me the address.' Ethan said.

'Alright, I will do just that.' Tania intoned and ended the call.

Ethan quickly got dressed and hurried out of the house. He was already in the car when he saw the address Tania texted to him. He was surprised to see the location. It was not even in the city where they stayed, it was in a small town and it made Ethan wonder what took Ella there but he knew now was not the time to ask that question. He needed to go and confirm if it was his beloved wife's clothes that were found.

It took him up to an hour to get to the river where the clothes had been found. Immediately Tania saw him, she ran to him and hugged him. She broke down in tears and her actions confirmed his worst fears. Ella was truly dead.

He gently released her from his embrace and together they both walked towards the police officers.

"Are you the husband of the person whose clothes were found?" They asked him.

"Yes I am, but I first need to confirm that it truly was my wife's clothes that you found," Ethan said.

"Alright, fine, come and check it out." One of the officers said to him.

They gave him a hand glove to put on and led him to where the clothes were. Ethan saw the clothes and his legs suddenly became weak and he almost fell but the officers were quick to hold him. It was the same clothes that Ella had put on before leaving the house the day she disappeared.

"Is it your wife's clothes?" One of the officers asked.

The words clogged in his throat and Ethan had to force himself to answer the officer.

"Yes, that was the same clothes she wore the last time I saw her," Ethan affirmed and broke down in tears.

Tania came to his side and held him. She started consoling him as the officers looked at him with pity.

"The body had not yet been found but the thing is, it has been three days already, there is every tendency that either the body had floated to the other side of the river or it had been devoured by sea creatures, but not to worry, we have sent men to check the other side and also divers who would check the other side of the river and also we have sent for divers who would go check inside the river and we will give you feedback of our investigations." The head officer there explained to Ethan.

Ethan could barely talk due to the shock so Tania had to answer on his behalf.

"Yes, we would like to leave now so please keep us updated." Tania requested the officer.

"That's no problem ma'am, we will keep in touch." The officer assured Tania and she managed to smile at him before leading Ethan away.

"I know you are too shocked to drive, so I will drive, you just sit down and try to relax. The body had not been found yet which means that there is still hope and chances that she would be found or maybe she is still alive somewhere." Tania consoled Ethan but deep in her mind she wished that Ella would never be found.

It was all her plans from the beginning. She had always been in love with Ethan. Though they had just been ordinary friends she had hoped that he would one day come to see her as more than a friend and so she endured until the day he met Ella, her sister who was only older than her by a year and Ethan had fallen in love with her at first sight.

To add salt to the injury, Ethan asked her to assist him in getting Ella to date him. Tania had thought that the relationship would just end after some time and not become serious but to her shock, Ethan came to her and asked her to assist him in proposing to Ella.

It was a huge blow to her but she managed to endure it all while planning on how to get back Ethan and now she finally succeeded. She had fabricated the voice recording. She made sure that Ethan was not home before Ella by sleeping with one of Ethan's clients and she told him to distract Ethan from coming home that day.

She knew her sister's weakness and she knew that her sister was going to get drunk, so she planned with the car driver to trail her sister and kill her. Now she had succeeded. She knew that there was no way that Ella was going to survive the attack and now looking at Ethan who had become dependent on her again, she knew he now belonged to her finally because even if Ella would be found, it would be her dead body. It was a win-win for her.

"Alright, thank you," Ethan said and ended the call.

It was the police officer, it was now one month of intense search with no results. The policeman had to call Ethan to let him know that they were dropping the case because it was evident that the body of his wife had been devoured.

Ethan was sitting down on the bed feeling dejected when Tania walked in. She sat down close to him.

"What's the update?" She asked him.

"The police called, they have decided to drop the case because it was leading nowhere and it was becoming a waste of their resources. They have decided to rule it as suicide." Ethan answered Tania feeling dejected.

"I have long ago accepted that my beloved sister had left me, honestly, it's painful to me," Tania said faking heartbreak.

"I still find it hard to believe that she committed suicide, she is not the kind of person to do so," Ethan complained.

"You cannot be so sure Ethan, she might have been depressed due to her childlessness," Tania said.

"But I told her I loved her with or without children, why would she still do that, besides, she said she had good news to tell me so why would she kill herself?" Ethan asked confused while trying to understand the whole situation.

"We don't know Ethan and we can't ask her. The only thing we can do now is to try to move on while still remembering her and carrying on her legacy." Tania advised.

"But it will be hard to do so, it will be hard for me to forget her," Ethan complained.

"And that's why we have each other and we will help each other pass through this phase," Tania said.

"Thank you, Tania, I wonder how I would have coped without you by my side," Ethan said in appreciation.

They stared at each other and Ethan leaned in and kissed her.

Five months later, Ethan and Tania got married.

Meanwhile, at a hospital in a different country, a young woman was lying on the bed unconscious while a doctor hovered over her. She suddenly opened her eyes and the doctor was surprised.

"Hello ma'am, can you hear me?" The doctor asked.

"Yes." The woman answered weakly.

"What is your name?" The doctor asked.

"Ella, my name is Ella." The woman answers with her voice barely above a whisper.
