Hello. My name is Sylvester and I am twenty six years old.
This is a book about my revenge on my father in-law Mr Adams, for what he had done to my mother. I hope this teaches you all, the readers, how to treat people. You'll never what the future might bring.
It all started a long time ago, when I was only eighteen my name was Dave...
Dave POV...
"Mother I'm off to work now." I said.
"Won't you at least have something to eat first? It's not good to work on an empty stomach." My mother said.
"No mother. I'm almost late for work and my boss doesn't like it whenever I arrive late." I replied and ran out of the house.
I understand that I have to eat something but my mother is very important to me. I can't imagine what will happen to me if I ever loose her. We are very poor and hardly eat two square meals a day. My father used to have a job and a salary good enough to feed us three but one day he died in a car crash. Everything I and my mother ever had were seized from us. Ever since then, I and my mother have been wallowing in poverty. I managed to get a small paying job and I've been keeping myself and my mother alive for two years now.
I'm finally on my way to work.
"Hey! Dave! Wait up!" Hilton yelled from behind me.
Hilton is my best friend. He is not poor as I and my mother. Hilton lives in a big house with his parents. His parents hates seeing me around him. They keep saying that I will affect him with my stench of poverty but we are friends anyways. Hilton is hard headed towards his parents when it comes to me.
I waited for him at the side of the road.
"Good morning Hilton." I said to him.
"Good... Morning..." Hilton said while gasping for breath.
"Why were you running after me like that?" I asked.
"I just want to follow you to work today." Hilton replied.
"Don't you have to be somewhere else?" I said.
"Where?" Hilton asked.
"In school of course." I answered.
"It's Saturday today. No school." Hilton replied.
"Oh. I forgot." I said and start to walk to my working place.
I work as a mechanic in a small working space. The environment is not bad, that's pretty much the reason we get many customers.
"Don't worry, we are almost there. I know you are very tired" I said to Hilton who already looks very tired.
"Me? Tired? How pathetic. I can do this all day." Hilton replied.
"Sure you can." I said sarcastically.
"Oh what's the use of pretending? I feel so tired. My legs are already very weak as well." Hilton admitted.
"I knew it." I said in satisfaction.
"You win. I must admit, you know me better than I know myself." Hilton said.
We finally reached my work place and my boss is already looking very annoyed.
"You are late Dave." My boss said.
He comes closer to me.
"Again!" He added, yelling into my face.
"Sorry boss. I promise you it won't happen again. It's just that I live so far away and I don't even have money for transport." I said.
My boss is a very good person. It's just that he hates any sign of laziness.
"You will work double today as your punishment." My boss said.
"Yes sir." I replied with my head down.
"Good morning sir." Hilton greeted.
"Good morning. What can I do for you?" My boss asked Hilton.
"Sorry sir. I didn't come for work. I only came here to spend the day with my friend." Hilton said.
My boss turns to me.
"Does this look like a place you bring friends over to play?" My boss asked me.
"No sir." I replied.
"I didn't bring him here for play sir." I added.
"Oh really?" My boss asked.
"Yes sir." I answered.
"Then why is he here?" My boss asked.
"To study sir." Hilton answered immediately.
"Study?" My boss asked.
"Yes. Study." Hilton answered.
"How? You think you can full me? If you are here for study, you would be with your notebook. And I don't see anything in your hands. " My boss said.
"It doesn't really require a notebook sir. I was only told to observe how work is done in a mechanic work shop." Hilton replied.
"Okay then. If you say so." My boss replies and leaves.
"You never told me you had a homework." I said.
"I don't." Hilton replied.
"Huh?" I said, very confused.
"It was only an excuse I made up to get you off the hook." Hit on replied.
"I can't believe you thought of a lie that fast. And that too without looking guilty at all." I said in amazement.
"Remember how I told you I want to become a high class business man when I grow up?" Hilton asked.
"Yes I remember." I answered.
"Don't you think I've been preparing for it?" Hilton asked.
"Ha ha ha." I laughed.
"Hey! Dave! Get to work and stop goofing around." My boss yelled and I immediately start to work.
Working as a mechanic is a very stressful and tiring job. Removing car parts, attaching spare parts, fixing the car's engine and all that stuff.
The only thing keeping me going is my plan for a better life for my mother.
Anytime I feel any weakness I always put my mother first.
Whenever I'm working its just as if... it just feels as if my mother is cheering me on. Telling me... Son, don't give up, you will make it in this life.
I love my mother so much, too much. If anything ever happens to her my whole life would be ruined.
"How come every mechanic I see here is dirty?" Hilton asked.
"It's because of the kind of work we do. How do you expect to look when all day you are fixing the interiors of different cars?" I said.
"I still think you can all try to maintain cleanliness." Hilton said.
"No matter how carful you are you would still get dirty." I replied.
Adams POV...
"Bring me my coffee!" I yelled to my errand boy.
He stagers into my office with the coffee in his hand. He puts it on my table and leaves.
With my concentration on the laptop I was operating, I used my left hand to pick up the cup of coffee and sipped it.
I spit out the coffee immediately it touched my tongue.
"Henry!" I shouted.
"Yes sir?" He answers from outside my office and enters.
"What sort of coffee is this?!" I yelled.
"Uh... The creamy type sir?" He answered, not even sure of what he was saying.
"I said black coffee! I never asked you to add cream to it!" I yelled in anger.
"I'm so sorry sir. Please forgive me." He pleaded.
"I don't even know what to do with you! You are so useless!" I told him.
"You never get anything right! Now leave my office you fool!" I added and he runs out.
"What an idiot. Always distracted and lazy and of course he just had to be clumsy too. I said his name almost five times and when he finally comes he messes things up." I said aloud.
"Everyone of my employees must have heard me clearly but that boy!" I added.
I look my telephone and dial the number belonging to my secretary, Charles.
"Hello sir." He said.
"Come into my office." I said and dropped the call.
My secretary comes in after a few seconds.
"I'm here sir." He said.
"I need you to find a new errand boy for me. Someone who is trust worthy and hard working. This one has become as lazy as the others before him." I said.
"It will take sometime sir but I will make sure to do my best." He replied.
"Good to hear. You may leave." I said.
Charles leaves my office and I relax my back on my chair.
"I am so exhausted." I said.
I am a businessman. I choose to keep my personal life secret from my employees. I believe it is not wise for a wealthy and rich man like me to expose too much about myself. I work 24/7 and don't even have time for myself. I prefer to live life to the fullest at any chance I get.
I hate it when any one of my employees start slacking in work.
Once I notice such a person I get them fired and replaced immediately. Because of this habit of mine my employees tend to work harder than the employees of any other company. Time is money and I don't wish to waste my time.
"Back to work." I said to myself.
Dave POV...
It's getting late and I have to hurry up to make it home on time. Hilton already left eight hours ago.
"Hurry up with that car Dave. We have to close for the day soon." My boss said.
"I don't like it whenever I reach home very late. It's because I always meet my mother awake and worried waiting for me. My mother is my world so I want her to sleep on time so that nothing happens to her health.
I rushed everything and managed to finish on time.
"I'm done sir." I said to my boss.
"Okay. Take the tools inside and go home." My boss said.
I took all the tools inside and locked the door of the shop.
I and my boss finally parted ways and went home.
I reached home and as expected my mother is there waiting for me, seated on a chair.
"Mother. I've told you time and again never to this again. When it's time for you to sleep do so. Don't stress yourself because of me." I said.
"Dave, my son, you know I can't sleep till you are back from work. You are the only one i have and if anything happens to you I might as well kill myself." She said.
"No, mother don't say that. Nothing will happen to me and you will not kill yourself." I said.
My mother smiles at me. She kisses my forehead and prays for me.
"I love you my son. And I'm sure that if your father was alive he would be very proud of you." She said.
"I love you too mother. Nothing I do would succeed if not for your prayers for me." I said.
We hugged each other and went to sleep. Tomorrow is another day.
The next morning...
I woke up and I noticed that my mother wasn't next to me.
"Where is she?" I said as I push open the door wide open.
"Mother!" I shouted.
I looked everywhere around our house but still couldn't find her.
"Where could she be? What could have happened to her?" I said feeling so confused.
"Dave." I heard my mother's voice say.
"Mother? Where did you go?" I asked her.
"I only went to see my long time friend. I saw her just across the street. What happened?" My mother asked.
"Nothing. I just got worried. You should have told me before leaving." I said.
"You were sleeping. I didn't think it right to wake you up just because I want to cross the street." She said and laughed.
"It's not funny mother." I said in protest to her reaction.
"Sorry Dave. I just can't help but laugh. Just see the look on your face." She said.
I frowned childishly and went back into the house.
"Dave." She said and went after me.
After I took my bath I went to buy breakfast.
I'm running out of money but luckily for me it's almost the end of the month. I just hope that my boss will pay me on time this month.
"Mother I'm going to get us some food." I said.
"Okay Dave, but be back soon." She replied.
I went to the the usual shop I bought stuff from. The woman who owns the shop frowns after seeing me. I knew right away what would come next.
"Good morning madam. How are you doing today?" I greeted but she pays no attention to my greetings.
"Have you come to borrow something else?! If yes then you better find another shop to buy from because I can't lend anything to you anymore." The woman replied.
"Madam I came with money today. I'm not borrowing." I said.
"Really? Bring the money to me." She said and I gave it to her.
"This is going to be part of the payment for what you've borrowed the other times." She said.
My mouth fell open.
Chapter three
"Please madam. If you take that money from me I and my mother might starve to death." I begged the woman.
"You should have thought about that before owing that much money. Now, I will not give you and your mother anything till you pay off your dept." The woman replied.
"But madam..." I said.
"That's enough!" She cuts me off.
She had already created a scene and a lot of people are gathered around us.
Some of them kept saying that the woman should let me have the money back but most people said that I have no shame and that I should pay the woman her money.
I didn't know what next to do. I felt like disappearing right that very moment.
"Hey. What's going on here?" A man's voice said.
Charles POV
I was just passing by an area with my car after leaving from a meeting with some clients when I saw a crowd gathered.
I wanted to leave but then I saw people yelling at a boy. I decided to go and check what was happening.
"Hey. What's going on here?" I asked.
"This boy owes me a lot of money but he doesn't want to pay." A woman replied.
"Yes I owe you money but I never said I won't pay you back. I and my mother are struggling to survive. The work I have as a mechanic only pays enough money for food. Ever since my father died everything we had was taken from us. But do you people care?! Of course not! You only choose to see and say what you want!" The boy said with tears filled up in his eyes.
Everywhere became silent for some time.
"How much is he owing you? I asked.
The woman told me the amount and I paid.
I gave the boy a huge amount of money and offered to take him home.
He agrees to follow me. I'm guess it's because he doesn't want to walk on the streets with tears scattered all over his face.
We enter into my car and he directs me to his house. All this while I was driving him I kept wondering what I could do to help this boy.
That was when I remembered that Adams, my boss needs a new errand boy. But I need to test him to see if he is trust worthy.
I thought deeply about it and I got an idea.
"This is where I live sir. Thank you." He said.
"And thank you for what you did for me back there. I really appreciate it." He added.
That was when I realized that l didn't even talk to the boy all through the time we were in the car.
I came down from the car as well.
"Take me to your mother. I need to talk to her about something." I said.
"Okay. You helped me out so I guess I can't refuse." He said and starts walking.
"So, what's your name?" I asked.
"Dave." He replied plainly.
"How old are you." I asked.
He hesitates in answering.
I understand, it's weird being asked all these questions by a total stranger.
"I'm just curious. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to." I said.
"I'm eighteen years old." He replied.
We stopped at an old looking house that seems to only contain one room. I was right because when we entered it only has one room with a stove, a mattress and two wooden chairs. A woman was lying on the bed.
These people really have nothing.
"Dave who is this?" The woman asked.
He explains to the woman, who I've concluded to be his mother, what happened to him where he went to buy food.
He also tells her how I had helped him to pay the woman and also gave him a lot of money.
Tears came down the eyes of the woman and she thanks me for what I did for her son.
"My name is Charles. I work at a company owned by Mr Adams, as his secretary." I introduced myself to them.
"I'm Dave's mother." The woman replied.
"Nice to meet you madam. I came to talk to you about your son." I said.
"Why? Did he do something to offend you?" She asked.
"No madam. Far from that." I was wondering if he would want a job as an errand boy for Mr Adams in the company. I assure you it pays well." I said.
"Isn't that place too far? We don't have enough money for transport." Dave's mother asked.
"Don't worry about that madam, I'll be the one to take him there every day." I replied.
"No sir, you can't just do that. It would be a burden to you." Dave's mother said.
"Not really madam. You see, I live far down the road but I always pass by this area to go to work. Your son only has to be early and be prepared." I said.
"I don't know how to thank you enough sir." Dave's mother said.
"No problem. I have to go now." I replied.
I dropped money on the floor but made it look like a mistake.
I made sure to drop it in an angle that only Dave could see it.
I left their house and went straight to my car. Once I started the car Dave ran after me. Yelling for me to wait. I pretend not to see him and I zoom off.
The test has just began. I just have to wait for tomorrow. When i pick Dave up from his house.
If he gives me the money in one peace he gets the job, but if he spends the money he looses the job.
I got ready for work the next day and hopped into my car. I hope that boy is a good person. It's really very difficult finding an honest person for the job.
The first three boys ran away with Mr Adams' money when he sent them to the bank.
I reached where the boy lives and horned for him to come out.
He came out of the house looking so tattered. His cloths looked so old.
"You dropped your money yesterday sir." He said and hands it over to me.
I collected it and counted the money. Wow, it's complete.
"Thank you Dave." I said.
"No problem." He replied.
"Aren't you ready yet?" I asked him.
"I am. Sorry sir but this is the best clothes I've got." He answered.
I have to do something about this. If this boy appears before Mr Adams like this Mr Adams would take him to be a gold digger.
"Okay. I'll have to buy you some cloths then. It wouldn't look good if by our go looking like this." I said.
"It's okay sir. I don't want to stress you." He replied.
"In our company, looks matters a lot. Hop in and I'll get you new cloths. You don't have a choice." I said.
"Thank you so much sir." He said happily.
