Elara's Pov
My heart pounded within my chest, a wild rhythm amid the lively city scene. Today was Kai's birthday, and I had arranged the best surprise.
A weekend escape to the Whispering Pines resort, located in the heart of Redwood National Park.
Kai loves nature, the aroma of pine needles and wet soil, the serene isolation of the woods.
I imagined us walking together, exchanging soft secrets beneath the star-filled night sky.
It was a significant difference from our small apartment in the city, where the only glimpse of nature we had was the drooping basil plant on the windowsill.
I grasped the tiny velvet case in my pocket, a nervous fluttering teasing my stomach. Inside was a silver wolf pendant, finely detailed with Celtic knots. It represented our bond, a vow of eternity.
Kai was consistently intrigued by werewolf myths...the instinctive bond with nature, power, and fidelity within a group.
He would even make jokes about being one himself...a playful sparkle in his eyes.
Naturally, I simply dismissed it with laughter. I had no idea...
I checked the time on my watch. Almost there. I informed Kai that I was working a late shift at the bakery...a needed falsehood to arrange this surprise. He would never imagine anything.
He was familiar with my extended hours and my commitment to my job.
He frequently grumbled...or at least teased...about my "flour-covered" kisses, yet I was aware that he privately appreciated my enthusiasm.
I halted in front of our apartment structure: an unremarkable, brick edifice located in an unremarkable area of the city.
The elevator was not functioning...as it often wasn't...and I huffed my way up the four flights of stairs while the scent of cinnamon and sugar clung to my clothing from the nearby bakery.
Arriving at door-4B, I retrieved the spare key hidden beneath the welcome mat and entered the house.
I crept in quietly, grasping my breath. The flat was unsettlingly silent. "Kai?" I whispered gently, partly anticipating him to leap from behind the sofa with a "Surprise!"
No reply.
I scowled. He ought to have arrived home by now. He finished his shift at the bookstore hours ago. Perhaps he had taken a break for a drink with his companions? I attempted to calm the increasing discomfort in my chest. I was acting foolishly. He was likely just delayed.
I chose to utilize the time to prepare. I prepared a small cooler filled with champagne and a selection of his favorite snacks.
I quietly entered the living room and started to organize everything on the coffee table. I lit several aromatic candles, filling the space with a cozy, welcoming light.
I even played his favorite jazz album; the soothing saxophone sounds floated through the apartment.
While I was organizing the champagne flutes, a small red envelope on the coffee table caught my attention. My heart skipped a beat. It was not written in my handwriting.
I extended my hand and grabbed it, my fingers trembling a little. It was directed to Kai, written in an elegant, almost fragile, handwriting from a woman.
A sensation of fear tightened in my stomach. I was aware I shouldn't, but realized I couldn't resist. I carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was just a single half-folded piece of paper. I opened it, my gaze scanning the text, and my breath caught in my throat.
Wishing you a joyful birthday love. I am excited to celebrate with you this evening. Meet me at The Crimson Moon at 8. Put on that shirt I love. And remember... I'm staying a bit just to perceive your scent again.
The name started with A."
My world shifted on its axis. It felt like the room started to whirl, the gentle jazz transformed into a distorted, mocking melody.
My hands started to tremble uncontrollably, my champagne glass fell from my hold, and shattered on the ground.
The fragments of glass were strewn over the carpet, mirroring the shards that represented my heart.
A... Who's that?
Suddenly, it dawned on me. A... Anya. My closest friend. The one who had been helping me with Kai's surprise...
A feeling of discomfort overwhelmed me. I stepped back, grabbing my chest as though the air had been knocked from my lungs.
This cannot be real.
Simply wasn't possible. Anya would never do that. She was my closest friend; we had remained inseparable since we were kids. We talked about everything, from secrets to dreams and laughter. Apparently, boyfriends as well.
My eyes stung, the tears eager to escape.
I gripped the wolf pendant in my pocket. The silver was cool to my touch, the extreme opposite of the burning when I bought it. A lie. It all was a lie.
I had to know. I had to know what had really happened.
I took my purse in my shaking hands. I couldn't stay here, in this apartment, surrounded by the remnants of my carefully constructed surprise, the echoes of their betrayal ringing in my ears.
I ran out of the apartment, slamming the door behind me. I didn't even bother locking it. What was the point? My life, as I knew it, was already shattered.
I hailed a taxi and gave its driver the address of The Crimson Moon, one of the 'in' places downtown. I knew Kai hung out there. He had once taken me there several months ago. I still remembered the low-lit inside, plush-velvet-covered seats, air thick with the smell of expensive perfume and unspoken desires.
As the cab whizzed along the city roads, I suddenly felt detached from the world around me-some supernatural controls turning my life into a movie. I was numb. In shock. I couldn't believe this was happening to me.
The cab pulled up in front of The Crimson Moon.
I paid the driver and stepped out onto the sidewalk, the cool night air a welcome contrast to the stifling heat of the cab.
For a moment, I hesitated, my hand hovering in the air over the door handle. Part of me wanted to turn back, to convince myself I hadn't seen the letter, to hold on to that illusion of happiness, however fragile it was. But I knew I couldn't. I wanted the truth, however painful.
Taking a deep breath, I heaved the door open.
The bar was crowded, the music loud and pulsating. I scanned the room, my eyes searching for Kai. And then I saw them.
They sat in the little, low-lit corner booth against the back, framed in the pale yellow light filtering from a neighboring lamp.
Even Kai was donning the same shirt Anya had written in the letter of. He seemed to be chuckling, having his arm around Anya's shoulders.
And Anya inclined her head sideways into him as her hand went across his chest. They actually looked... comfortable. HAPPY.
My heart plummeted into my stomach. It was a physical blow, a punch in the gut, and the wind was knocked from my lungs.
I stood there, frozen, unable to move, my eyes fixed on them. I watched as Kai leaned in and kissed Anya, a slow, lingering kiss that made my blood run cold.
Everything around me faded into the distance: the music, the chatter, the laughter... all so muffled. The only thing I could hear was my heart pounding in my ears, the echo of their betrayal ringing in my mind.
I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I didn't even feel anger. I just felt... empty. Hollow. Like a part of me had died.
I turned and walked away-my footsteps echoing on the polished floor. I didn't look back. I couldn't.
The smell of betrayal was heavy in the air, a bitter, acrid smell that clung to me like a shroud. It was a smell I knew I would never forget.
Elara's Pov
"Arggh!" I groaned, stumbling as I stepped into the apartment. My hand clutched my abdomen, the birthday package in my hand fell to the ground, echoing in the empty hall.
'Kai... please...Kai please don't stop. Ohh.'
My eyes widened as realization dawned on me. But nature wasn't done with me just yet.
A bolt of intense pain shot through my abdomen, weakening my thighs. At that moment, I fell to the ground, unable to balance myself.
My breathing heavy, my eyes heavy, my body quivering. Shit...I needed this to stop, I needed it all to stop.
'You're so freaking gorgeous. Why didn't the moon goddess pair me up with you?' That was Kai, my mate. The bond we had made his voice echo in my ears.
"Why?" I whimpered, my wolf struggled to pick herself up, but the excruciation pinned her down to my mind. "Why..." I curled into a ball so suddenly, trying to relieve the pain. But I couldn't, I wanted to scream, my veins seeming as though they were about to pop out of my skin.
Tears stung my eyes. This betrayal hurt. My best friend and my mate.
I knew why she wanted him so much, mentioning she could never get married to someone who wasn't an Alpha. Why had I not taken hints?
I managed to get up onto the bed after a few minutes of relief and by mistake, clutched a small, silk bag in my hand. Inside, a single item – a crimson lace thong. *Anya's.* I'd found it tucked between the cushions of the couch, a blatant, careless reminder of their intimacy.
_______________
The door opened, and Kai stood there. Frozen for a second, he let a flicker of surprise cross his face before settling it into something unreadable.
He was dressed in the same clothes from the previous night; the shirt was slightly rumpled, and his hair was just a little too disheveled.
He smelled faintly of sandalwood and... Anya's perfume. My stomach churned.
Elara? What are you doing here? I thought you were at work," he said, the tone casual, almost dismissive.
"Where were you last night, Kai?" I whispered. I held up the silk bag, letting it dangle from my fingers. The crimson lace peeked out.
His eyes flickered to the bag and then back to my face. He didn't say anything.
"Don't lie to me," I said, my voice growing stronger, the anger that had been bottled up finally rising to the surface. "I know."
He let out a deep breath and ran a hand through his hair. "Look, Elara, this isn't what you think."
"Oh, really? Because from where I'm standing, it looks an awful lot like you sleeping with my best friend!" I spat venom in my words.
His face hardened. "Don't be dramatic."
Dramatic? *I'm* being dramatic? You slept with Anya, Kai! In our apartment! On our couch!" I shrieked, the words tearing from my throat.
He winced but only for a moment. "We didn't. sleep together," he mumbled, his eyes avoiding mine.
"Oh, so you just held hands and sang lullabies? Is that it?" I scoffed, the bitterness high in my chest. I yanked the thong from the bag and threw it at him. It landed on his chest, a splash of crimson against his grey shirt. "This says otherwise."
He picked it up, his face reddening a dull red. He didn't say anything.
"Whose is it, Kai?" I persisted in a shaking voice. "Tell me the truth."
He blinked several times, before finally saying something, his voice low. "It's... it's Anya's."
"Thank you for that earth-shattering revelation," I said, sarcasm dripping from my voice. "So, you *were* with her last night."
"Look, it just... happened," he said, his eyes pleading. "We were talking, and... one thing led to another."
"One thing led to another?" I echoed, incredulous. "You betrayed me, Kai! With my best friend! In our home! And all you can say is 'one thing led to another'?"
He looked down at the floor, shame etched into his features. "I'm sorry, Elara."
"Sorry?" I laughed, a hollow, broken sound. "Is that all you have to say? Sorry? That's supposed to fix everything?"
He looked up at me, and his eyes were filled with this weird mix of guilt and resentment. "What do you want me to say? I made a mistake. Everybody makes mistakes."
"A mistake?" I shrieked, my voice cracking. "You call this a mistake?" "You broke my heart, Kai! You destroyed everything we had!
"Don't be so melodramatic," he snapped, his voice rising. "You're acting like I've never done anything good in this relationship."
My heart dropped ten lengths low. "You know what you did, Kai. Why are you shifting the entire blame to me?"
"You were never enough Elara. I was about to reject you today because of how uneven we've been lately."
I looked at him with pure disbelief. "After everything we've been through? Kai? You're going to throw that all away because of your selfish reasons?"
"Don't you dear call me selfish for wanting something better."
"What did you just say?" I questioned, stepping closer to him.
"You heard me." He countered.
"You are abandoning me for that low life bitch?! With all that I've given you?! You didn't even give half as much as I gave to you. You're going to regret this... everything!"
My hand touched my already stinging face. He just raised his hand on me.
"Don't you dare, raise your voice at me. And never call her a low life, she's way better than you, in every sense of the word." He said and my eyes watered once more before he walked past. "You'll be getting the divorce papers by tomorrow. But now. I reject you, Elara Morgan, as my mate. You're no longer welcome into my home."
"Where will I go?"
"Figure it out yourself."
I clutched my chest, the pain surging through my veins like unending rivers of water.
"Kai." I whispered one last time before everything turned black.
My legs ached, my stomach growled, and my heart felt like a lead weight in my chest. I wandered the streets, a ghost in my own city, until I stumbled upon a familiar building. It was a rundown apartment complex, the kind where the paint peeled and the hallways smelled of stale cigarette smoke. This was where Lily lived, a fellow Omega from the pack. We weren't close, but we shared a bond – the shared burden of our low status.
Hesitantly, I pressed the buzzer for Lily's apartment. After a moment, the door creaked open, revealing Lily's worried face. Her eyes widened when she saw me.
"Elara? What's wrong? You look... terrible," she said, her voice filled with concern.
I didn't answer. I just stood there, tears silently streaming down my face.
Lily didn't press. She just opened the door wider and ushered me inside. Her apartment was small and cluttered, but it was warm and smelled faintly of lavender. It was a haven compared to the cold, empty streets.
"Come in, come in," she said, leading me to a worn-out sofa. "Tell me what happened."
I sank onto the sofa, my body aching with exhaustion. I told her everything – Kai's betrayal, Anya's cruelty, the rejection. I spared no detail, laying bare the raw pain that consumed me.
Lily listened patiently, her brow furrowed with concern. When I finished, she was silent for a moment, then she reached out and took my hand.
"Oh, Elara," she said softly. "I'm so sorry."
"I... I don't know what to do," I whispered, my voice trembling. "I have nowhere to go."
Lily squeezed my hand. "You can stay here, for as long as you need," she said. "It's not much, but it's a roof over your head."
I looked at her, gratitude welling up inside me. "Thank you, Lily," I said, my voice choking with emotion. "Thank you so much."
Lily smiled. "Don't mention it," she said. "We Omegas have to stick together, right?"
Over the next few days, I stayed with Lily, trying to piece my life back together. It was difficult. The pain of Kai's betrayal was a constant ache in my heart. Anya's words echoed in my mind, reminding me of my perceived worthlessness. I felt like a broken doll, discarded and forgotten. Love, trust, hope... they all felt like distant, impossible dreams.
One evening, as we were sharing a meager dinner, Lily mentioned something about a ball.
"The Alpha's Ball?" I asked, surprised. "I didn't know there was one."
Lily nodded. "It's tonight," she said. "It's a big deal. Everyone has to go, even Omegas."
"I... I don't think I can go," I said, my voice barely a whisper. "I don't have anything to wear. And... I just don't feel up to it." The thought of facing everyone, of potentially seeing Kai and Anya, made my stomach churn. I just wanted to disappear.
Lily frowned. "Elara, you *have* to go," she said, her voice firm but gentle. "It's important. Besides, who knows what could happen?"
I looked at her, confused. "What do you mean?"
Lily hesitated for a moment, then she sighed. "Elara," she said, her voice gentle. "I... I know you're going through a lot right now. But you need to understand something. Anya... she's not just your best friend. She's also... interested in the Alpha."
My heart sank. "Interested? You mean..."
Lily nodded. "She's been trying to get his attention for months," she said. "She thinks she's the perfect Luna. She's beautiful, she's ambitious... she's everything an Alpha is *supposed* to want."
I stared at her, speechless. It all made sense now. Anya's sudden interest in Kai, her constant criticisms of me, her eagerness to help plan his birthday surprise... It was all a calculated move to get closer to him, to position herself as the better choice.
"And you think... she'll try to use the ball to... to get him?" I asked, my voice trembling. The idea was sickening.
Lily nodded. "It's a perfect opportunity," she said. "The Alpha will be there, surrounded by all the pack members. It's her chance to make a move."
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. The thought of Anya and Kai together, as Luna and Alpha, was unbearable. But it wasn't just about them. It was about me. It was about the finality of it all. It was about accepting that I was truly alone, unwanted, unloved.
"I... I can't," I whispered, shaking my head. "I can't go. It's too much. I'll just... I'll just stay here."
Lily looked at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of pity and determination. "Elara, you can't give up," she said. "I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that you're not good enough, that no one could ever love you after what happened. But that's not true."
"It is true, Lily," I said, my voice flat. "Kai didn't love me. Anya thinks I'm nothing. They're right."
"No, they're not!" Lily insisted. "They're wrong. You're kind, you're compassionate, you're strong. You've been through so much, and you're still standing. That makes you incredible."
"But I'm an Omega," I said, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. "I'm at the bottom of the hierarchy. I'm... I'm less than nothing."
Lily stood up and walked over to me, her eyes blazing with intensity. "Don't you ever say that about yourself again," she said fiercely. "You are not less than anything. You are worthy of love, Elara. You deserve to be happy."
"But how?" I asked, tears streaming down my face. "How can I be happy after everything that's happened?"
"I don't know," Lily admitted. "But you have to try. You have to go to this ball, Elara. Not for Kai, not for Anya, but for yourself. For your future."
"I don't have a future, Lily," I said, my voice choking with sobs. "My future was... it was with Kai. And now... now it's gone."
"Then make a new future," Lily said, her voice firm. "Don't let them take everything from you. Don't let them win."
I looked at her, my eyes filled with doubt. "I... I don't know if I can," I whispered.
"You can," Lily said, taking my hands in hers. "I believe in you, Elara. And you need to believe in yourself."
Her words gave me a flicker of hope, a tiny spark in the darkness. Maybe... maybe she was right. Maybe I could start over. Maybe I could find happiness again.
That evening, as I was getting ready for the ball, I felt a strange mix of emotions. Nervousness, fear, anger... but also a flicker of hope.
I put on the only dress I had, a simple blue gown that I had worn to Kai's birthday dinner last year. It wasn't much, but it was clean and it fit.
Lily helped me with my hair, braiding it into a simple but elegant style. She even lent me a pair of her earrings, small silver hoops that added a touch of sparkle.
As I looked in the mirror, I barely recognized myself. I looked... different. Stronger. More determined.
I took a deep breath and walked out the door, ready to face whatever the night held.
The ball was held in the pack's grand hall, a vast space decorated with shimmering lights and colorful banners. The air was filled with music and laughter, the scent of expensive perfume and delicious food.
I scanned the crowd, searching for Kai and Anya. And then I saw them.
They were standing near the front of the hall, talking to a group of pack members. Anya looked stunning, her dress a shimmering red that accentuated her curves. Kai was by her side, looking handsome and confident.
My heart clenched at the sight of them together. But I refused to let it break me.
I took a deep breath and walked towards them, my head held high.
As I got closer, I noticed a group of people standing near the back of the hall. They were all looking in one direction, their faces filled with awe and... fear?
I followed their gaze and saw him.
The Alpha.
He was standing on a raised platform, his back to me. He was tall and muscular, his broad shoulders covered in a dark, fur-trimmed coat. He exuded an aura of power and authority that was almost palpable.
He turned slowly, his eyes scanning the crowd. And then, they landed on me.
My breath caught in my throat. His eyes were... intense. They were a deep, piercing blue, filled with a strange mixture of curiosity and... recognition?
He looked at me for a long moment, his gaze unwavering. Then, he started to walk towards me.
The crowd parted, making way for him. A hush fell over the hall. All eyes were on him, on me.
I stood there, frozen, my heart pounding in my chest. I couldn't believe what was happening.
The Alpha stopped in front of me, his eyes still locked on mine. He was even more imposing up close. His presence was overwhelming.
He looked at me for a moment, then he spoke, his voice deep and resonant.
"Mate," he said.
The word echoed through the hall, silencing the music, silencing the chatter.
Mate.
He had called me mate.
I stared at him, speechless, tears welling up in my eyes.
He reached out and took my hand, his touch sending a jolt of electricity through my body.
"I've been waiting for you," he said, his voice soft, but firm.
A gasp rippled through the crowd. Anya's face contorted with rage, her eyes flashing daggers at me. Kai looked stunned, his mouth agape.
I still couldn't speak. I was in shock. And so was every other person here.
