CHAPTER 1
Colleen White frantically dashed down the stairwell, knowing to herself that she was running late. Alpha Daniel and Luna Selena, her parents, were already seated at the dining table with her grandparents.
"Good morning, everyone," she greeted and gave each one of them a greeting kiss.
"Good morning, pup," her father gleamingly smiled. Every member of the family called her that way except for the other members of their pack. She made her way towards the dining table and joined her family for breakfast. The food was savory and delicious, just as usual. It quickly melted in her mouth, making her moan due to its splendid taste.
While the family was dining together, Jacob, the alpha of the pack, suddenly appeared.
"Colleen, Melissa is waiting for you," he said as soon as his eyes landed on her.
Colleen, who was used to his cold and straightforward demeanor, wasn't fazed by his words. Instead of looking confused, she gently curled her lips into a smile and responded, "Thank you, Uncle Jacob."
When they finished breakfast, she immediately stood up and took the sandwich that her mother had wrapped with wax paper for her. She thanked and kissed her parents goodbye. As she was leaving, she gazed and gestured a goodbye wave to her family.
"Bye, everyone!"
Colleen twisted the door open and pushed it towards the other side and then saw Melissa standing close to the door, waiting for her.
"You woke up late again?" Melissa nagged. She even looks at her with a raised eyebrow with her one hand on her hip.
Colleen scratched her head out of excuse and sheepishly smiled at her friend as they started walking together.
"Your birthday will be held a week from now?" Colleen asked. "Are you excited?" she added, looking at her dear friend.
"Of course, I'm excited! Who wouldn't be?" Melissa's eyes beamed with joy and excitement. Colleen nodded, seeing how happy her friend was.
Primarily when werewolves turn adults, they meet their fated one at the age of eighteen. Finding true love and doing many things together was something Colleen was envious of. She always wonders when she will meet her mate and feel that sense of completeness and happiness with the one meant for you. A specific person chosen by the moon goddess herself to take care and cherish her.
Unknowingly, Colleen didn't realize that her smile was turning into a bitter one. Melissa grabbed her wrist and looked at her straight in the eyes, dragging her back from her deep thoughts.
"Oh, come on, don't show me that face!"
"I'm sorry," Colleen murmured.
After a fifteen-minute walk, Colleen and Melissa finally arrived at their school. Once they entered the gate, they saw students walking side by side in their uniforms and smiling towards one another. They were all in groups or teams, showing how much time had passed since vacation ended.
Today was their first day of school, and upon reaching their room and waiting for their teacher, Colleen's eyes immediately gazed towards the front.
She noticed her adviser standing from across the center of the room, beside her is an unfamiliar yet charming face.
"Good morning, class." their adviser greeted them.
"Good morning, Mrs. Dove!" said by everyone.
Their teacher seemed to roam her eyes first around the class before speaking once again. "As you can see, someone unfamiliar is standing beside me. His name is Patrick Andrada, and he will be your new classmate."
Everyone's eyes, including Colleen's, were fixated on the tall stature of the student. He looked pretty mesmerizing, one that made a lot of girls gossip.
The adviser instructed the transferee to find his seat, and in the process, Sarah, who was flirtatious among their peers, told her friends to push Patrick towards her to sit beside her.
After a while, the class resumed. In the corner of Colleen's eyes, she found herself peeking at the transferee. He was busy taking notes of the lecture while staring at Mrs. Dove. Since her eyes are glued on Patrick, she didn't even notice the time going faster.
Just as they always did, Colleen and Melissa went back home together. For Colleen, school days were dull, although Friday was the only exception.
On their way home, she saw Patrick together with Sarah's group. They were standing outside of the cafeteria near the school. Seeing how her classmate was giggling and clinging onto the transferee's arm, for some reason, Colleen felt disgusted.
She tried to avoid the scene and just diverted her attention towards something else and went back to walking with Melissa.
Not long after, they finally reached home. She waved Melissa goodbye and entered the main gate. Her house was nearer compared to Melissa's, which is just a few steps behind.
As she entered the living room, she noticed that everyone in her family was there, sitting on the sofa.
"I'm home," she greeted, trying to break the awkwardness, yet for some reason, they looked more serious than usual.
"Pup, get changed. We need to talk to you," Colleen's father said.
Hearing her dad's tone, she suspected that something must have happened. She grew weary and nervous, anticipating what they'd tell her.
Was it about her mate? All of them had been waiting for her to turn eighteen years old since last year, and now she was distraught.
Rumors had been circulating that her family had been dying to know who would end up as her mate. For one, they were curious about his strength, and second, they wanted him to be capable of defending their honor and territory from the invaders, the Rogues. They were dangerous, and their numbers were increasing, but thanks to her father, they always ended up failing.
Alpha Daniel may be strong, but the truth was that he was growing older. There would come a time that the Rogues would overpower him, making Colleen's fated mate the sole hope of the pack.
With many thoughts bothering her head, Colleen inhaled as she pushed the door to her bedroom open.
CHAPTER 2
Colleen chose her favorite pair of clothes to wear before stepping out of her bedroom. As she eagerly went downstairs, all of them tilted their heads and stared at her.
She could feel her heart pounding hard as beads of sweat formed on her face. She decided to sit between her mother and grandmother. She felt her mom's arm wrapping around her shoulder while waiting for her dad to speak.
Colleen decided to do the same. She looked at her father and noticed how he breathed out a deep sigh before staring straight into her eyes.
"I know you're wondering why we need to talk to you," he said in a soft voice. Despite hearing this, Colleen can still feel the command that her father has. "Pup... from now on, you need to be trained; though you are a woman, you need to be strong for the sake of our pack." her father stated in more of a command than a statement manner.
Her forehead knitted in confusion.
"What did he mean by that?"
"I'm not a man..."
"I'm supposed to become a Luna, so why do I need to learn how to fight?"
"Only Alphas need to train, so... why?"
Questions filled Colleen's mind as her eyes roamed towards her family, passing from her grandparents to her mother, who immediately embraced her into a tight hug.
"Mom..." she uttered.
Even before she could say anything, her mother already spoke. "Remember that you have Alpha blood running into your veins. You can conquer everything. You can put down any enemies coming your way."
These words only added to Colleen's confusion.
"Mom, what are you... I don't understand anything," she whispered. She broke away from the hug and turned to look at her dad again. "Dad, I'm about to turn eighteen soon, so isn't that what you're all worried about? I will meet my mate at that time, right?" She looked at him, waiting for an affirmation. Her father couldn't look straight into her eyes and instead slowly shifted towards the elders.
"Colleen, my dear, your father wants you to be prepared because we still don't know if you'll find your mate when you turn eighteen," her grandmother explained.
"We still don't know if you are the reincarnation of our great grandfather," her grandfather added, in which she furrowed her brows. "Do you know the reason why we are still alive?" he asked without pausing. "It's all because we are waiting for your mate to arrive. It's been a tradition from generation to generation to stay alive until their grandchild meets their mate."
Colleen shook her head. "I'm sorry... but I really can't understand anything. What's wrong with me?"
"Our great grandfather's mate was kidnapped by the Rogues. He was killed because of his kindness. Everyone in the pack at that time hoped and prayed to the Moon goddess to give him a chance which reincarnated him along with his mate."
"What does that have to do with me?" Colleen couldn't contain herself anymore. Her voice became louder, and her eyes narrowed into a glare.
"Why can't they just say it straight to my face?" she thought.
Her grandfather heaved a sigh before continuing. "Let me finish, my dear child.'
"No, tell me!" Colleen interrupted.
She can't help but raise her voice as she appears to be more troubled than before.
"I'm a woman and a soon-to-be Luna, yet you guys keep on shoving the idea of being an Alpha into me!"
The room fell silent as if a spell was cast on everyone. After a moment, Colleen's grandmother tried to calm her and elaborate further, "Our great grandfather wished in his dying breath that while he was out on a journey of nothingness, our pack would be blessed by protection. Once he comes back, he will lead us, the silver wolves, into our glory."
Her gaze was locked onto her grandparents, looking for more answers. She only saw her grandfather lower and shook his head.
"Dad, please," she begged.
"You don't understand, pup--"
"You're right; I don't understand anything! I'm a woman, so how could I be our great grandfather? I might be the reincarnated mate," she suggested.
Colleen couldn't accept the possibility. She can't help thinking how awful it is to be a woman and a warrior at the same time. She can't see, nor does she dream of fighting in the frontlines for the sake of protecting the whole pack. She doesn't want to be burdened; she doesn't want her people to cling to her words.
"Enough, Colleen." she flinched upon hearing her father's baritone voice for the first time. "We're only telling you that we want you to be prepared while waiting for your mate," he added.
She lowered her head upon succumbing to his authority. She knows she wouldn't be able to do anything once they say something.
"This is my mistake," her dad suddenly mumbled.
Colleen can feel a looming sadness in her father's eyes, something that she rarely sees.
"Father and mother are right, I should have trained you when you're still young, but I didn't want to restrain you from being a normal woman," he said. "I thought that when you grow older, you will understand us."
Seeing her father full of regrets made Colleen's heartbreak. She never thought of seeing her father in such a weak state. Colleen loves her father dearly, his bravery and also kindness.
Their pack is growing larger in numbers. After many werewolves joined their asylum due to their Alpha's dying at the hands of the rogues, they had no choice but to protect more than they can. They had to shoulder the burden of saving the lives of their lines, and now. They were looking at Colleen as if she was the only hope of their family.
Her mother held her hand and comforted her with a gesture. Colleen put her lips into the back of her palm and felt tears gushing down her mom's eyes from all the pressure she will now take on.
CHAPTER 3
Colleen couldn't help but felt like her world was shattering, seeing how her parents were holding back their sadness. She used her thumb to wipe out the tears from her mother's eye and gently looked at her.
"Mom, please don't cry," she uttered. "You don't have to worry about me." she whispers in pain.
She turned her gaze towards her father and grandparents. "I will accept the training, Dad. If it's only the way to put back those smiles on your faces and... to protect our pack." she replied with dejection. Despite the disagreement in her mind and heart, she knew that it was something she must do.
Behind Colleen's sorrowful and sullen eyes is a hint of fiery determination. One that is too hard to ignore, bearing the resemblance of the courage of an Alpha.
Her mother embraced her tightly, followed by her dad shortly. She could feel the warmth of their bodies onto her, knowing what she's about to do for the sake of the pack--her family.
"Thank you, pup." She heard her father mumble, sobbing intently and quietly.
It has been decided that Colleen will undergo an Alpha's training, and on that night, they started, but only a small one, for the meantime. Everyone reached an agreement that her mother will be her first trainer as well.
The next day, she was in her locker putting her stuff inside when she heard a moaning sound in the corridor corner.
Out of curiosity, she strolled, avoiding making any sounds, when a loud voice suddenly came from the corner. "Don't come here unless you want to join!" that made her jump back in shock.
Colleen was startled overhearing those words. She immediately turned around and walked in the opposite direction with her heart pounding fast while her knees trembled. She even involuntarily held her chest, in thought that it might ease her increasing heartbeat.
She felt embarrassed knowing that she was about to witness something grand. When she was able to get far enough from that place, she took break and she put her hand into her face, feeling stupid. "How I wish the earth could just swallow me up!" she said, thinking that werewolves like her are supposed to have a keen sense of hearing.
Colleen thought that someone wouldn't do those sorts of things in broad daylight to justify her stupidity, especially on school premises.
She leaned her back on the large pillar standing across the hall, and she took a deep breath. When she finally calmed down, she motioned towards her classroom only to be greeted by a swarm of students.
She didn't think the crowd would swallow her until she bumped into someone. When she lifted her head to see who she accidentally collided with, a pair of teak wood-colored orbs presented itself to her. He had such flush eyelashes and broad eyebrows. Colleen also noticed his heart-shaped lips, something that she shouldn't be staring at.
"I... I'm sorry," Colleen immediately said, stuttering. Their eyes locked up for a second before she looked away out of embarrassment. She hates the fact that she choked in front of Patrick.
"I also apologize; I wasn't paying attention while walking," he said.
Colleen only nodded her head as a response, thinking she might stammer again.
"Are you going back to our classroom?" Patrick asked.
She swallowed a lump in her throat before answering.
"Yes..." she intended to answer in a single word, in an attempt to not make herself look like a bigger fool for stammering.
*******
Patrick was in a hurry when he bumped into one of his classmates. He knew that she was in the same class as his because at the very time he laid his eyes on her, Patrick couldn't stop thinking about her all the time, enough that he even dreamt about her the night beforehand.
He was walk-racing with her when he realized she was faster than him. He suspected that she was a werewolf, which he didn't mind. It's not entirely impossible knowing that in Edmundo, different races are mixed to the point that even werewolves and humans mate.
Patrick lived in California before they returned to this state. His parents asked him to come with him since they built a new business and bought some properties in the city.
It was the only school where they could accept transferees, especially since it was already half of the school year.
"By the way, may I know your name if you don't mind?" He said after he held his hand up to offer a handshake.
Patrick can't help to define her as pure beauty. Perfect pale skin, long obsidian hair, alluring crystalline eyes that shimmer as she speaks. Colleen was wearing her school uniform, which was showing her young and petite body perfectly. A beauteous lady who looks happy, pure, and gentle that would capture anyone's heart. However, a part of Patrick's heart is worried that this girl might not feel the same way as him.
His heart was rejoicing when she accepted his hand. "Colleen... hmm... Colleen White," she said while smiling, showing her irresistible grace. It did not pass his mind how soft her hand was when their skin touched each other.
"I know, our teacher has introduced me, but still, I wanted to introduce myself personally. I'm Patrick... Patrick Andrada." Both of them giggled as he finished his sentence for reasons unknown.
"Well..." he said while scratching the back of his head. "I guess we can proceed to our classroom."
"Oh... yes," Colleen responded softly, and afterward, both of them walked side by side.
****
They just entered the classroom when Sarah hooked her arm to Patrick's, pulling him away from Colleen. She can see the hesitation from Patrick as he turns his head towards her. Colleen gives him a timid smile as she continues to walk towards her seat.
"Where have you been?" Melissa asked her. Colleen averted her gaze; instead, she just scrolled through her mobile phone. Melissa's gaze, however, wasn't unto her. Colleen discovered immediately, and so she decided to follow and was shocked to see something for the first time inside their classroom.
