Vivianna POV:
"I will not marry a vegetable! A dying Alpha King!"
The shriek tore through the living room, followed by the crystalline shatter of a vase. My stepsister, Yasmine, stood panting, her knuckles white, shards of glass glittering at her feet like fallen stars. Her unevenly bleached blonde hair trembled with rage as she pointed a shaking finger at her father, my father, Gregory Hayes.
Gregory, a man who always tried to maintain a veneer of respectability, was failing miserably. His face was a mask of strained purple. "Yasmine, darling, this is the Sinclair Pack! Think of what this means!"
"It means I'll be shackled to a corpse for the rest of my life!" she screamed back. "No! I'm meant to be the queen of the ball, not a nursemaid!"
I remained in the shadows, a ghost in my own home. The air was thick with the cloying scent of Yasmine's cheap perfume mixed with the sour tang of her fury.
That's when my stepmother, Rhonda Hayes, descended the stairs. She moved with a practiced, predatory grace in her tight silk robe, her gaze sweeping past her hysterical daughter and landing squarely on me.
The look was as cold as a snake's belly. Knowing exactly what was expected of me, I immediately shrank back against the wallpaper, making myself look as small and pathetic as possible. I let my lower lip tremble-a practiced, deliberate maneuver that had saved me from countless beatings over the years.
Rhonda ignored Yasmine's tantrum and glided to Gregory's side. "We have another daughter, don't we?" she murmured, her voice a poisonous whisper meant only for him.
Gregory's eyes shifted to me, a flicker of hesitation quickly extinguished by resolve. I felt like a piece of livestock being appraised.
Rhonda crossed the room. Her fingers, tipped with sharp red nails, clamped onto my chin, forcing my head up. "Listen, Vivianna"-her voice was like honey laced with arsenic-"Yasmine can't go. But the Sinclairs need a bride."
She let out a short, contemptuous laugh. "You're a wolfless, anyway. A waste of space without an inner wolf. Marrying a comatose Alpha is the best you could ever hope for."
A wolfless, a genetic dead-end, couldn't even trigger the mate-bond recognition, making me a blank slate, a perfect, worthless substitute.
My stomach plummeted, and I forced a tear to well up in my eye, letting it spill over my cheek. "But... please, Rhonda," I whimpered, making my voice crack perfectly. "I'm scared. He's an Alpha King... I'm just... I'm nothing. They'll hate me."
"No buts," Rhonda snapped, her ego clearly fed by my pathetic display. "It's time you repaid the Hayes family for raising you." Her idea of raising me was treating me as Yasmine's shadow and the house's unpaid servant.
Yasmine's sobs subsided, replaced by a malicious glee. "Yeah, Vivi. It's perfect for you. A nobody for a vegetable. A perfect match!"
I lowered my head, letting my long hair curtain my face, hiding the flash of cold ice in my eyes.
Gregory produced a document bearing the Sinclair Pack's sigil-a roaring dire wolf. "Sign it, Vivianna," he commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument.
I saw the name Kaelen Sinclair. He was a legend, one of the most powerful Alpha Kings in history, until an ambush with a silver weapon left him in an incurable coma. Silver was the only substance that could truly harm a werewolf, bypassing our healing abilities and poisoning us from the inside out.
I let out a small, choked sob as I reached for the pen. I made sure my hand shook violently, nearly dropping the expensive fountain pen onto the parchment. It was a flawless act, masking the physiological cocktail of fury and pure exhilaration rushing through my veins.
My signature was shaky and small, the exact script of a terrified, broken girl.
Rhonda snatched the document, a satisfied smirk on her face. She patted my cheek as if I were a pet. "Good girl. Go pack your things. No, on second thought, don't. We can't have you showing up with your rags."
She turned to Yasmine. "See, baby? Problem solved. Don't cry, I ordered you that new Céleste handbag."
I was dismissed to my room-a cramped storage space in the attic.
The moment the heavy wooden door clicked shut behind me, the trembling stopped instantly. I wiped the fake tear from my cheek, my posture straightening as a cold, hard smile curled my lips.
They thought they were sending a lamb to the slaughter. They thought they were punishing me. They had absolutely no idea they had just handed me the keys to the Sinclair kingdom.
A substitute bride. It was a stroke of brilliant luck.
If I had tried to infiltrate the most powerful pack in the country on my own, I would have been torn to shreds at the borders. But as the legally bound wife of their comatose Alpha? I would be untouchable. Being a "wolfless nobody" was my greatest weapon-no one would perceive me as a threat.
I would be invisible, granting me unrestricted access to the pack's inner sanctum. The exact place I needed to be to find out who really orchestrated the murder of my biological mother.
Half an hour later, a sharp knock interrupted my thoughts. A woman in a severe business suit stood there. "Miss Monroe," she said, her tone flat and professional. "I'm Carol Reynolds, Mr. Hayes's secretary. Please come with me."
I followed her down the stairs, taking one last look at this place I was forced to call home.
Yasmine, lounging on the sofa, made a face at me. Rhonda didn't even bother to look up.
Gregory avoided my gaze. "Get her there safely," he told Carol.
I was led out to a black sedan, understated but screaming wealth. The door closed behind me with a heavy thud, sealing my fate.
As the car pulled away, I watched the lights of the villa shrink in the rearview mirror.
I let out a slow breath, rolling my shoulders to release the tension of playing the victim. The mask of fear completely dissolved from my face, replaced by a sheet of absolute, calculating calm.
Vivianna POV:
The black sedan glided through a set of imposing iron gates. Forged into the metal was the Sinclair Pack sigil: a snarling dire wolf, carved from black obsidian. This wasn't some ancient castle; it was a sprawling, modern estate of glass and steel, poised like a crouching beast on the hillside.
The car stopped. Carol shoved me out, her hand a hard knot in my back, hurrying me like cattle.
A middle-aged woman in a crisp gray uniform, her hair pulled into a severe bun, met us at the door. "I am Brenda Sullivan, the Head Housekeeper," she announced. Her eyes were sharp, like X-rays, scanning me from head to toe. I felt transparent. As the manager of the Alpha's household, her authority was second only to the family.
Her gaze lingered on my cheap dress for a fraction of a second, a flicker of disdain in her eyes, before turning to Carol. "Miss Reynolds. Alpha Alistair is expecting you."
Carol's professional mask immediately morphed into a fawning smile. She pushed me forward. "This is Vivianna. Kaelen's bride."
Brenda gave a curt nod. "Miss Monroe. Welcome to the Sinclair Estate. Please follow me." Her tone was polite but distant.
I followed, with Carol trailing close behind, her eyes constantly warning me not to make a mistake. I kept my head down, playing the part of the timid, wolfless Omega.
The interior was breathtakingly luxurious. I made sure to let my breath catch in my throat. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked manicured gardens, and the air hummed with the faint, clean scent of cedar and earth-the scent of power. The scent of an Alpha.
We were led to the Alpha King's bedroom. It was enormous, decorated in cold shades of black and gray. In the center of the room, on a massive bed, lay Kaelen Sinclair.
Even in his coma, his presence was a physical weight in the room. His features were sharp, like a sculpture, his black hair cropped short. I could feel the dormant power in him, a sleeping volcano.
Carol leaned in, her whisper venomous. "See? There's your husband. 'Serve' him well."
As she spoke, she stumbled, her body lurching toward me. Her trajectory was aimed directly at a side table with sharp, metal corners.
Her goal was obvious: to injure me, preferably leaving a permanent scar on my face. It would make the substitution irreversible and paint me as a sympathetic, damaged Omega, masking their deceit.
Even a mere secretary felt entitled to draw my blood.
A cold, murderous fury simmering beneath my skin. They truly believed I was nothing but a disposable punching bag. Once I secured my position here, the Hayes family-and their lapdogs-would pay for every ounce of this arrogance.
I couldn't just dodge. It would expose my reflexes.
The moment her weight hit me, I went with the force, my body pitching forward in a clumsy, flailing motion. My foot "happened" to catch on the edge of the plush rug.
I landed in a heap on the soft carpet, inches from the deadly corner. It looked like a lucky break. Only I knew every movement was calculated.
Carol let out a fake gasp. "Oh, heavens, Vivi, are you alright?" Disappointment flashed in her eyes.
I looked up, tears welling, my body trembling. "I... I'm fine, ma'am."
Brenda's brow furrowed. She had seen the whole thing, but she said nothing, only addressing Carol. "Miss Reynolds, Alpha Alistair has been waiting in the study for some time."
Carol shot me one last glare before following Brenda out.
The room was silent, leaving me alone with the comatose Kaelen. I got to my feet, brushing myself off.
I needed a secure place to drop the act. I slipped into the adjoining bathroom, a massive space of marble and chrome.
I locked the door, the click echoing in the silence. The terrified girl in the mirror vanished, replaced by a woman with eyes of cold steel. I turned on the faucet, splashing cold water on my face to wash away the lingering scent of Carol's cheap perfume and my own fake tears.
I dried my face with a plush towel, taking a deep, steadying breath. It was time to assess my new "husband" and figure out my next move in this pack.
I unlocked the bathroom door and stepped back into the cavernous bedroom. The silence was absolute, heavy with the scent of cedar and dormant power.
I crept back to the bedside. As I leaned over him, the eyes that should have been closed snapped open. They were the color of a stormy sky, sharp as an eagle's, and they were locked on my face.
Vivianna POV:
Time seemed to freeze. I was staring into a pair of deep gray eyes that held no trace of a coma patient's confusion, only cold assessment and absolute lucidity. The scent of cedar coming off him intensified, thick with a pressure that was almost physical.
My heart hammered against my ribs, but I knew this was a battle of performances. I had to sell my character before he saw through mine.
My eyes widened in "pure" shock, followed by a flicker of... rapture? I stumbled back a step, my lips trembling as I formed a broken sound. "You... you're awake?"
I didn't scream. That was key. A truly terrified Omega would have screamed. But my character was a "naive, foolish, but kind" girl. Her first reaction to her husband waking up would be joy.
His eyes betrayed a flicker of surprise. My reaction was not what he'd expected.
I lunged for the door, not to escape, but to perform the act of rushing to share the "good news." "Oh my goddess! I have to tell Elder Alistair! The Alpha King is awake!"
A split second before my hand touched the doorknob, a powerful hand clamped around my wrist. His movement was lightning-fast, nothing like that of a man long confined to a bed.
His palm was scorching hot against my cool skin. I could feel the calluses on his fingertips, proof of his lethal power.
A low, raspy voice, rich with the timbre of disuse, sounded right by my ear. "Don't."
I froze, turning slowly, my face a mask of "confusion" and "fear." "Wh-why? You're awake. This is wonderful news!"
Kaelen Sinclair was sitting up now, the covers pooled around his waist revealing a hard, muscular chest. He stared at me, his eyes appraising me like some curious new object. "Who are you?"
I ran through my options. This wasn't the time to reveal anything. I needed a powerful ally, and my research indicated that the Sinclair Pack's Elder Patriarch, Alistair, was an old-school Alpha who valued tradition and honor above all else.
I bowed my head, adopting the most submissive posture I could manage. "I... I'm Vivianna Monroe. From the Hayes family... your new bride."
Just then, the sound of a heavy tread and the rhythmic tap of a cane echoed from the hallway. Alistair Sinclair was coming.
Kaelen's reaction was faster than mine. In a fluid motion, he was lying down, eyes closed, back in his "coma." The hand on my wrist released.
My mind raced as the heavy footsteps drew closer. He's faking it. The realization hit me like a jolt of electricity. The most powerful Alpha in the country was playing dead in his own bed. If he's going to these lengths to hide his recovery, he must have enemies close to home. A hidden agenda. A cold thrill shot through my veins. Whatever his reasons, this secret is the ultimate leverage. I just found my perfect weapon.
The door opened to reveal a white-haired but vigorous old man. Alistair. Behind him were Brenda and Carol Reynolds.
Carol didn't shout, but her posture radiated haughty disdain. She looked at me as if I were a stain on the expensive rug. "Elder Alistair, I apologize for the disruption," Carol said, her tone smooth but dripping with condescension. "It appears Miss Monroe is already overwhelmed by the simple task of sitting quietly. As I feared, she lacks the fortitude for this environment."
I didn't argue. I simply shrank back, letting silent tears spill over my cheeks. I subtly angled my arm, allowing the sleeve to slip down just enough to reveal the angry red bruising forming on my wrist-the undeniable proof of Kaelen's iron grip.
Alistair's brow furrowed. His sharp gaze flicked from my trembling form and the bruised wrist to Carol's cold, superior face. He let out a low grunt of displeasure. He clearly assumed the Hayes family's staff had been rough with me.
"That is quite enough, Miss Reynolds," Alistair's voice boomed with quiet, absolute authority. "To speak of the Alpha King's bride with such blatant disrespect in his own chambers is unacceptable." The Elder Patriarch was a figure of immense respect in any pack, his word carrying the weight of generations.
Carol's professional mask slipped for a fraction of a second, her jaw tightening, but she didn't dare argue with an Elder. "My apologies, Elder Alistair."
Alistair's gaze softened as it fell on me. "Are you alright, child?"
I shook my head, then nodded, looking utterly lost. "I'm fine, Elder. I just... I wanted to be alone with my... husband."
The words "husband" and "be with him" clearly pleased the traditional old wolf. He sighed.
"I know this is difficult for you," he said. "As a wolfless, marrying our Kaelen is both an honor and a heavy burden." His words reinforced my cover and revealed his own old-fashioned views.
He turned back to Carol, his tone icing over. "You may return to Gregory Hayes and inform him that Vivianna is a Sinclair now. She is Kaelen's wife. I will not tolerate anyone treating her like a second-class citizen."
Carol was promptly escorted from the estate, her parting glance cold and calculating, but ultimately powerless here.
Alistair addressed Brenda. "See to it that the Luna is settled. Provide her with anything she needs. From this day on, she is one of the mistresses of this estate."
The title "Luna" sent a jolt through me. It was the address for an Alpha's mate. I had succeeded.
Alistair patted my shoulder. "You're a good child. Take care of Kaelen. The Moon Goddess will watch over you."
After he left, Brenda's attitude toward me was one of genuine deference. She showed me around, informing me that a new wardrobe would be procured for me.
I had won the first round. I was secure in the Sinclair Estate with the Elder Patriarch's support.
That evening, when I was once again alone in Kaelen's room, I could feel that burning gaze on me the moment the door clicked shut.
I dropped the timid act entirely. I walked to the side of his bed, my posture straight, my eyes meeting his stormy gray ones with absolute calm.
"I know you're awake, and I know you have your reasons for playing dead," I said softly, a faint, knowing smile touching my lips. "We need to talk, 'husband.' We're accomplices now."
