"What was that stunt you pulled at the party" Isabella asked. She dumped her expensive Louis Vuitton bag on the dressing table with a sudden thud and faced Henry who sat dejectedly on the bed. He was not ready for another banter or rather, another episode of his wife relegating him to his lowest.
"I am talking to you, Henry!" She yelled, her eyes fixated on him, beautiful baby blue eyes that used to hold so much love and admiration for him.
Henry shook his head slowly "Isabella, I..."
"Will you shut the fuck up, you loser? Are you not ashamed of yourself? Is it not enough that you have to brain and no common sense of reasoning? Why do you have to make a mockery of me everywhere?" The insults flew out of her mouth freely and hit Henry wherever.
Henry and Isabella had been invited to one of Sandra's friends engagement party. She would not have let him come along if only her other married friends were not talking about how much their husbands were busy and they had to convince one way or the other to grace the occasion.
"I know Mr Henry may be busy too but please convince him to come." One of the ladies had said.
Henry used to be popular among Sandra's friends. A tall charming handsome man who was able to captivate Sandra. Sandra used to be so proud of him that everywhere she went, she made it obvious that he was her husband.
However, those beautiful days of blissful love were over and what was left was contempt and spite. It was as if Sandra just realized that Henry's job of being a Hotel Housekeeper did not complement hers of being the CEO of a thriving company in the United States of America.
At the engagement party, a shareholder of Isabella's company walked up to them and a group of friends and asked what Henry was into after exchanging pleasantries.
"I work in an hotel" Henry replied. He learnt to use a vague job description such as that so that he wouldn't lie and at the same time, please his wife.
"A hotel?" Mr George, the shareholder asked, a mischievous glint in his eyes. He must have imagined Henry was a billionaire or CEO as well, a position suitable for Isabella's husband.
"Yes. I work as..."
"He's a professional in Hotel management and hospitality" Isabella interrupted, gave a small smile, patted Henry's back before dragging him away from the group.
"I'm sorry babe" He said, his eyes pleading.
"Babe huh?" Isabella scoffed "Do you know you're simply good for nothing? Calling me babe when you have exactly nothing to your name. What was I thinking when I married a riffraff like you?" She smeared some cleanser on cotton wool and set to begin her nightly skin care routine.
The dinner bell rang few minutes later
"I won't be having dinner tonight. You can go ahead" Henry said, already subdued by Isabella's insults.
"You wouldn't dare" Said replied. She finished her skin care and headed for the door "You have five minutes to come downstairs for dinner"
"Sandra..." He was about to protest.
"Shhh..." She interrupted "People like you don't get to make decisions so do as you are told. You don't have to make it obvious that you didn't grow up with a family, poor boy" She hissed.
The other members of Isabella's family- her parents and younger sister were already present at the dinning hall when Henry finally braced up himself and went downstairs.
"Hello brother-in-law" Michelle, Isabella's sister cooed
She was one of the major forces that ruined the love that once existed between Henry and Isabella. Henry ignored her and took his seat at the large dining table. He muttered an almost inaudible Good evening to his parents-in-law .
"Now you haveade yourself the head of the family, coming to dinner after every other person is seated." Mrs Micheal commented, her scornful look ravaging his body.
Michelle laughed.
"It's already shameful that a grown up man like you doesn't have a house"
"He does not have a house but he has the looks and the body" Michelle mocked
Henry remembered when he was still courting Isabella. Michelle would give him a leering look and run her hand over her body in a lustful manner, sometimes she bit herlips and smirked at him when no one was looking. He always ignored her.
One day, after he got married to Isabella and moved into the house, she sneaked into their room and attempted to seduce him. Henry had threatened to scream when she finally aborted her mission.
Now, Henry wondered if Michelle hated him because he had refused her advances.
"Michelle, he's your sister's husband" said Mr Micheal, a Stern look on his face. He was the only indifferent person in the family. He neither liked not disliked Henry.
"Isabella, don't you think there is need to brush up your husband?" Mrs Micheal said, ignoring her husband. She was hell bent on making Henry aware of her hatred for him.
Isabella raised her eyebrows while Henry dropped his spoon noisily. All the terrible things he was hearing had made him lose his appetite. He wished he had the power to shut them all up or have his dinner peacefully away from them all. They were too toxic for his gentle spirit.
"What do you mean, mum?" Isabella asked
"I mean, Collins might propose to your sister soon. What do you want people to say? Won't you be embarrassed?"
Collins was Michelle's boyfriend. Son of a popular business tycoon in Los Angeles.
"Not many people know that Henry is a cleaner" Michelle chipped in.
Henry sighed. That was all he could do. Every one turned to look a him and he wished he had not done that.
"Do you realize you're at the verge of spoiling my name? A CEO married to a house keeper?" Isabella directed to him
"Isabella, please..."
"That's it! All you know how to do is to be pathetic. Can't you man up and do something tangible with your useless God forsaken life?"
Henry couldn't take it any longer. He stood up and walked away from the dinning hall while Mrs Micheal and her two daughters continued to rain insults on him.
"Well, I remembered asking you over and over again if you were sure about marrying someone like him" A tired Mr Micheal said, getting up from the table.
"She was in love, Dad" Michelle replied.
"Exactly. Now she has realized what a pain in the neck he is to this family, her life and career."
Henry James grew up in an orphanage home. He knew nothing about his family or if he even had one at all.
After leaving the orphanage home, he started working as a house keeper in Golden Star Hotel, one of the biggest hotels in Hawaii. This was where he met Isabella.
He was assigned to clean the room she was lodged in and on that fateful day, Isabella had found a stain on the bed spread. When he came to change the bed spread, Isabella was stunned by his handsomeness and gentle manner.
A handsome 6 feet 2 inches tall man with jet black hair. She watched how sweat trickled down his near perfect skin and the unruffled smile plastered on his face when he apologized for the stain. She was lost in the ocean of his beautiful brown eyes that held so much hospitality.
She began to imagine herself in his strong and capable hands, smuggled in his embrace, breathing in his sweet scents. She became a regular at the hotel and made sure he was assigned to her suite.
One day while he was cleaning, she locked the door and undressed before him. She was a bold lover and Henry was a man so it didn't take long before they were both entangled on the hotel bed, moaning and thrusting.
That was the Genesis of their love and although, Henry didn't want to marry her because of the difference in their class and social status, Isabella assured and reassured him. Class was nothing where love is concerned because love covereth everything so he believed her.
Jimmy, Henry's only friend was worried for him.
"Dude, are you sure you want to marry this babe?" He asked each time they met and Henry would lounged into episodes upon episodes of Isabella's assurance that they would be fine.
Jimmy was happy for him and equally worried about him when two years into the marriage things changed.
"Are you sure you won't get a divorce?" Jimmy told him one day.
"A divorce?" Henry asked. The thought had never crossed his mind.
"Yes. I mean both of you don't want this marriage so is it not better to go your separate ways?"
"Bro, it's not like I don't want this marriage. I love Isabella but..."
"... But she doesn't love you." Jimmy interrupted him.
Henry figured out Jimmy was right and he had to take his advice after all, he would have been a happier person if he had followed his advice and not married Isabella in the first place. Later that week, he told Isabella about it.
"I need to talk to you" He told her that morning. Isabella was on her way out.
"I'm busy if you're not. What can you possibly have to say?"
"It's important for us" He said weakly
"It will have to wait until later" She said and walked out.
Later that day, when she mentioned the divorce to her, she slapped him. He was so shocked that he staggered even though the slap her feeble hand landed on his cheek did not sting.
"You slapped me?"
"Yes, I did and I might as well give you a second slap" She said.
He got angry and further first time, felt the urge to beat her up but he did not. He sat on the bed and spoke calmly.
"Isabella this marriage is going nowhere so we have to split up. We are not compatible." He told her
"Well, as much as I hate to be your wife I can't divorce you"
"Why?!" He didn't know when when the scream came out.
"Are you actually dumb or you're just pretending to be dumb? Really?"
"Isabella, do you derive joy in putting me down? As far as I can remember I'm older than you" Henry replied, he was annoyed and determined to let her know how he felt. Isabella let out a loud mocking laugh.
"Older than me? I see you're actually dumb. You see, there's nothing like age without wealth okay? If you're poor and good for nothing, you bow to people you can birth."
Henry shook his head.
"That's doesn't even matter. I don't want this marriage anymore" He said with a note of finality
"Who told you you can decide that? For your kind information, there's nothing like divorce. Ohhh, you want to divorce me so that my company can suffer the blow, right?"
"So your company is more important than us? We are not even a proper couple. No kids, no sex, no affection, no.."
"That's your business Henry. This conversation is over"
With that, Isabella went into the bathroom. Henry was once again helpless.
He felt like calling Jimmy right away to tell him what was happening but he didn't want to disturb his sleep so he laid on the bed dejectedly. He couldn't sleep until Isabella came out of the bathroom. She laid beside him and began to stroke his chest. He was surprised.
"What are you doing?" He said, pushing her hand away
"You said we had no sex so I want to correct that." She replied and kissed him.
For once, Henry thought about the good old days and responded to her light touches. He was aroused. He explored her body like never before and moaned softly as he thrusted into her. He had been without a woman for so long. He was so eager to quench his thirst for intimacy. It was pure ecstasy.
He woke up the next day feeling nostalgic. He remembered what had transpired between them in the course of the night and felt like things had changed. Perhaps, the idea of a divorce brought Isabella to her senses.
He dressed up and went to work happily. He could not wait to tell Jimmy the result that his suggestion yielded. How ever he couldn't reach him all day.
"How was your day, babe?" He asked Isabella as got into the house. He had gotten off work late and so, met the family at dinner.
"Babe?" Michelle was taken aback.
Henry didn't want to mind but he was also eager to let the family know that he was now on good terms with his wife
"Yes. Is it wrong to call my wife babe?"
Michelle and Mrs Micheal turned to look at Isabella. Henry wanted her to say something but she kept mute so he called again
"Babe?"
"Will you shut your trashy mouth?!" Came the response from Isabella.
He was confused. Was he going ahead of himself. He gave Isabella a long look and there it was, around her pupils, her resentment towards him.
They were not back to the bliss of the past. He hurried and went upstairs while Michelle laughed.
"He must be out of it" Isabella said and hissed.
Henry thought of himself as foolish for hoping that things would change after that one night of sex. His eyes became teary but he quickly wiped the tears as the door of their bedroom creaked open and Isabella came in.
"Michelle is getting married to a CEO meanwhile I'm married to a housekeeper" She said, her voice full of sarcasm.
Henry ignored her and went to bed.
"I can't imagine you are unperturbed. I know you're wretched but do you not even have shame? Are you proud of being without dignity?" Her voice was rising and Henry was determined not to reply her. He had not recovered from the hurt he suffered few minutes back. He wished he could get a divorce and save himself all the troubles.
"I see you've decided to be deaf. See me in my office tomorrow. Let's see if I can get you a suitable position even with your unsophisticated resume" She hissed. "Also, I think it's best that we sleep in separate bedrooms. There are a lot of rooms in the house so move out as soon as possible."
Henry didn't respond and he drifted off to sleep.
Isabella's company looked the same way it did few years ago when he used to come visit her. He walked to her secretary who confirmed that Isabella was waiting for him. Henry thought the secretary was not aware that they were not even a proper couple because the young girl was so eager to please him. He imagined her grovelling under the sound of Isabella's harsh voice. He pitied her.
"You should have come earlier. Just take a look at the time." Isabella said immediately he got into the office. She was sitting behind her large mahogany desk. Eyes squinted on a file.
"What?"
"You heard me. I'm super busy now. Maybe you can help me get some photocopies" She replied and threw some papers at him. Henry was dumbfounded.
"I only took an hour off work" He said limply
"Well, that's the point. You're an employee. You still have time so get the photocopies quickly"
Henry couldn't believe that he had taken a cab all the way from Golden Star Hotel to get photocopies for his wife. He felt like flinging the papers back to her but he dare not.
He took the papers to the secretary. "Make photocopies for your boss"
"Yes sir" The secretary promptly responded and he left.
He was aware that Isabella would be mad at him but he didn't care. He was tired of being a pauper answerable to the Micheals and so that night, he went to Jimmy's house. They had not seen each other since the divorce issue.
"Really Bro, she doesn't want a divorce?" Jimmy sounded shocked.
"I tell you. She's concerned our divorce will affect her damn company meanwhile, we are worse than exes" He let out a frustrated sigh.
"Don't you think you're allowing this girl use your head?"
"What can I do?"
"Fuck!" Jimmy banged the table. He was utterly concerned about his friend.
"Man, I've got to accept my fate. You know, carry my cross" He shrugged
"You can't continue this way. How about you file for a divorce? Go to court or something" Jimmy proposed
"A lawsuit against Isabella Micheal?" He laughed. A laugh that sent a thousand message about how he's hurting to his friend.
"We can always try, you know?" Jimmy replied.
"Jimmy, filling a lawsuit against her is like trying to destroy myself. There's no victory in sight. Her family knows all the right people in the right places"
"But at least you can bring down the mighty Isabella. Destroy her company."
"I don't think I want to do that. I used to live Isabella and I still love her. I only wish I can become better, step up the social ladder so I can be worthy of her love" Tears were streaking down his smooth face now. Jimmy patted his back gently.
He loved Isabella and regardless of how he was treated, he still wanted the best for her and wished they could go back to what they were - a loving couple worth envying.
"I understand." Jimmy said.
Jimmy encouraged him and they both came to the conclusion that it will be a good idea to strive for a better life and climb the social ladder to be on the same level with Isabella. Henry was determined to revive his love and happiness with his wife
He was full of hope when he got home that night. Isabella was not yet home so he decided to make her favourite dessert, red velvet brownies.
"What are you doing in the kitchen?" Michelle walked into the kitchen to get a glass of water. "Give us some privacy" She directed to the help who was helping Henry with the brownies. She hurried out.
"Why do we need privacy?" Henry asked. He dropped the whisk in his hand and focused on her slow movement.
"Well, I noticed you've been trying to get on Isabella's good side. You're even making a dessert for her" She was peering into the bowl of mixture.
"She's my wife and our relationship is non of your business" He replied and continued
"That's what you think but as for me, it is my ultimate goal to have you thrown out if this house brother in law" She moved towards him and pulled his beards. "But you know there's something you can do to save yourself the troubles, right?" She took his hands and placed it on her waist. Their bodies lightly touching. In a flash, he pushed her away such that she almost tumbled over.
Before she could retaliate, Isabella's voice was heard asking the help where Henry was.
"He's in the kitchen Ma'am" Lilian, the help replied.
Isabella walked into the kitchen furiously. Michelle had moved to the fridge, pretending to get water. She said a brisk Hi to Isabella who replied with a nod. Before Henry could demonstrate the special greeting he had planned, He felt a slap across his face. The initial smile turned to horror. Michelle was equally dismayed. "Holy fuck!" She squealed.
