Chapter 1

Chapter 1

[1]

I had been by Valerie's side since childhood; we were as close as sisters.

The Flynn family meticulously chose a husband for her, selecting the newly appointed top scholar. I once believed Valerie would find happiness in this marriage.

However, on the eve of her wedding, tragedy struck the Flynn family. The entire family was wiped out, leaving only Valerie and me to struggle through the hardships.

While seeking refuge with her fiancé, Valerie was kidnapped by thugs and disappeared without a trace, ultimately meeting her tragic end in an abandoned well.

As for me, I was taken in as a favored mistress by Valerie's fiancé and became pregnant with his only child.

Princess Miranda saw me as an obstacle, while the top scholar treated me like a prized possession.

But what they didn't know was that I was actually a vengeful ghost here to take their lives!

I had been with Valerie since childhood; we were as close as sisters.

The Flynn family was a prestigious and influential clan in the region. When Valerie came of age, her father meticulously selected the newly crowned top scholar in the national exams as her future husband. This scholar, Nolan, was not only graceful but also exceptionally talented. In my eyes, he was indeed a worthy match for Valerie.

Although Valerie had never seen Nolan in person, she had already fallen for him through his portrait. Everyone eagerly anticipated the union of this perfect couple and the beautiful future they would share.

However, fate took a cruel turn on the eve of Valerie's wedding. The vast Flynn estate was raided overnight. All the men were exiled, and the women were forced into servitude as government courtesans. Only Valerie and I escaped this calamity because we had gone out to play.

Valerie's pale, delicate hands clutched her disheveled hair, her long eyelashes quivering as if she still couldn't believe that her once vibrant home had turned into an empty shell overnight. Watching her sit in the carriage, her face filled with disbelief, my heart ached.

She knelt, disheveled and desperate, her voice pleading as she spoke.

"Karlee, this is just a nightmare, right?"

"It's a dream, a dream..."

As she spoke, she made to jump out of the carriage. I immediately pulled her back. Seeing Valerie in such a dazed state, I raised my voice at her for the first time.

"Valerie, if you go down now, you'll only be throwing your life away! We need to find Nolan. He will surely know how to save the Flynn family."

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Just like that, we embarked on the journey to seek refuge with Valerie's fiancé.

Along the way, we camped out under the stars, not daring to stop for even a moment. But who could have known that before we even reached Alicdon, a group of thugs would appear out of nowhere? They were fierce and menacing, their faces twisted with malice. In the midst of our shock, Valerie was forcibly taken by these villains. I can still hear her terrified screams and see her pleading eyes to this day.

Yet, they spared me, as if they had come solely for her. I couldn't afford to think about anything else. Without eating or drinking, I searched everywhere for Valerie, but after three days, there was still no sign of her.

Finally, I found her in an abandoned, dried-up well. Her clothes were in tatters, her eyes wide open, and her face gaunt, no longer the plump and adorable girl she once was. It was hard to imagine the unimaginable suffering and agony she must have endured before her death.

Ignoring my own physical state, I clung tightly to the slippery, moss-covered grips on the well's wall, carefully climbing down the cold, slippery surface. Each step was fraught with danger, and I feared that one misstep would send me plummeting down. The bottom of the well was filled with a musty, rotting smell mixed with the scent of wet earth.

Weak light filtered through the well's opening, barely illuminating the surrounding space. The ground at the bottom was muddy and strewn with rocks, and the walls were wet and covered in moss. In this cramped and suffocating space, I struggled to control my fear, keeping my eyes fixed on Valerie's frail body. She lay quietly in a corner of the well, her face as white as a sheet, her clothes soaked by the remaining water.

Taking a deep breath, I summoned my courage once more and continued to inch closer to her. I had to get her out of this dreadful place as quickly as possible and bring her back into the warmth of the sunlight. Valerie belonged in the sunlight.

I deeply regretted it. If only I hadn't insisted on going to Alicdon to find her fiancé!

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

I carried Valerie's lifeless body for what felt like an eternity.

After much difficulty, I finally found a small oasis amidst the vast desert. It seemed like the only somewhat decent place to lay Valerie to rest.

As I stopped, memories of Valerie's kindness flooded my mind. She treated me like family. She never scolded or hit me, always shared her food with me, and never treated me like a servant. My heart ached with sorrow. Valerie was my guardian, and I owed her everything.

After much contemplation, I decided to go to Alicdon. I needed to find Nolan and seek justice for Valerie and the Flynn family.

I endured harsh weather and rough terrain and finally reached Alicdon. When I saw the city gates, I couldn't hold on any longer and fainted.

When I woke up, I was in a clinic. A kind person had brought me there. From him, I learned that the former top student had already married Princess Miranda and had become the royal consort, now a favorite of the emperor!

I wanted to rush over and confront him, to ask why he had married someone else while Valerie had just passed away. But given my current status, I knew I had no chance. I needed to wait for an opportunity.
