Chapter 1
Eloise Brooke
'Congratulations, Mrs Holt. You are four weeks gone'
As I waited in the living room, my fingers tightened around the pregnancy test result, as if my whole world depended on it.
Lucas, my husband, walked in through the entrance door. Elegant in his charcoal suit. A briefcase in his grip. A deep frown on his face... as always.
My heart pumped hard in my chest as I stood and went to take his briefcase. "Lucas... You are home..."
He ignored me and went to sit on the couch.
"How was work? I made dinner... You should shower and eat something." I was sure I looked so stupid right now, with my voice almost shaky. I just didn't want him to have a reason to complain today like he always does.
"I'm not hungry..." He paused, his eyes scanned me with contempt, then he said, "Give me that," his voice icy cold and dismissive.
I hurried to give him his briefcase.
"Sit." He commanded, without so much as even a glance.
My heart pounded hard against my ribcage as I sat across from him, waiting for his face to soften so I could break the news of our baby to him, but what he did next made me freeze on the spot.
He dropped a paper and pen on the center table and pushed them to me, with the casual word. "Sign it, Eloise."
'What's this?' I resisted the urge to ask a question, reaching for the paper, however, my eyes widened the moment I saw what was written in the paper.
'Divorce agreement' I looked at him, shocked.
"Wh... what is this?"
"Divorce agreement. We are getting a divorce, Eloise."
I froze, the paper slipped from my hand. What is he talking about?
"Are you joking?"
"No, I'm not." He replied flatly, and my face went pale.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, picking the paper from the floor.
"Uhm... I...I... Lucas... Wh...why... I mean, what's going on? Why are you giving me this?"
I stuttered, hands trembling, lips quivering, and heart hammering against my ribcage.
"Lucas---"
"Rose and I are getting married. She's carrying my baby, and we are going to start living together soon. I don't want you to make her uncomfortable."
My jaw dropped, and my eyes widened. For a second, I stared in silence, trying to process what he said, and after a long silence, my voice sounded beneath the loud pounding in my chest. "Ro... Rose?"
Rose? Isn't that the woman he claimed was 'just a friend?'. The same woman I've told him several times that I wasn't comfortable with him being around her, and he claimed that I was just being insecure?
"I will write you a cheque later when you are done packing... I think that'll be enough to compensate you since you have nothing now."
Just like that? A cheque? To compensate me? After five years of marriage?
My heart twisted in my chest. I stared at the paper, its black letters swimming before my eyes. My mouth parted, but no sound came. Everything in me had gone still. I couldn't even cry. There were no tears left in my eyes.
'I promise to love, care for you, and cherish you for the rest of our lives'
That vow he made to me five years ago when we were joined together in front of both of our families as husband and wife. Did it mean nothing to him? The promise he made to always protect me, have they gone with the wind?
Love wasn't what brought us together, I know that. This whole marriage thing was arranged by both our parents, but I've always loved Lucas desperately. I was ready to make this marriage work, regardless of what it was going to cost me. But It was the worst mistake I ever made. Trying to make a man who feels nothing for me, to love me.
If only my parents are alive.
Born with a silver spoon in my mouth, and the heiress of a multi-billionaire, I got everything I ever wanted. My parents loved and treated me like a princess. I had the smoothest life, loved by everyone, Lucas and his mom included. At least that was what I thought, but that love only lasted till after the sudden death of my parents, and I lost everything they left for me.
Without another word, Lucas stood and turned to leave.
I rose to my feet and shook my head. "You can't divorce me, Lucas. I'm carrying our child."
He stopped and turned to me, his eyes flickered with shock, but it only lasted for a split second, then disappeared.
I knew I was crazy, but I was hoping he would change his mind about the divorce. However, his next words pierced right through my heart like a dagger.
"Do what you wish with the baby, Eloise. Keep it, or get rid of it... Your choice."
"Lucas!"
"Sign the paper before nightfall."
My legs trembled beneath me, and I crashed to the floor when they weakened.
Twenty months ago, I was here too. Bleeding. Broken. Mourning the child we lost. And he hadn't cared then either. Even when he was the reason we lost the baby.
'Why did I stay even after everything?'
There was only one answer. I was madly in love with him. And if there had to be another reason, it would be that he was the only family I had left. I was practically living at his mercy.
"Lucas..." My voice trembled. "Please don't do this... You can't do this," I crawled to him and held his leg, whimpering.
"You're all I have left, Lucas... Please... don't do this. Our child needs you. I need you." I begged without a choice. If I didn't, I was going to end up on the street. I would not be able to give our child the happy life he or she deserves.
"Sign the paper and leave my house, Eloise. I'm done." He kicked me roughly, and without another glance, walked away, while I cried out...
Chapter 2
Eloise Brooke
'Lucas's Mom' was the first person I could think of for help, so I went to her for help. Unlike Lucas, his Mom was different. She loved and cared for me like I was her own daughter. Well, that was until the death of my parents. She had changed toward me, but a part of me still believed that there was still a soft spot left for me in her heart.
"Mom... Mom..." My legs trembled beneath me as I dragged them into her living room, however, I halted abruptly on my track, and froze at the sight that welcomed me.
She sat on one of the couches in her spacious and furnished living room, legs crossed, unbothered... And Rose... She sat beside her.
"Mo...m..." My voice faded into silence, and I swallowed nothing.
It's not what I'm thinking, right?
"Eloise... You are here?" She stood and smiled at me, but I could see the shock in her eyes. She didn't expect that I would be here.
"Why are you here at this time of the day?"
But my eyes shifted to Rose, my jaw almost reaching the ground. I couldn't think straight.
She sat there like a queen. Like the beloved daughter-in-law of the family. She sat as though she owned the house. A smug smirk played at the corner of her lips.
"Mom... Why is she here?" I looked back at Mrs. Holt, but she looked away.
"You mean Rose?"
"Why is she here?" I barely managed to hold my sanity together. My heart was hammering against my throat, my blood was pumping hard and fast.
"We need to talk, Eloise."
Without so much as an explanation of what was happening, she grabbed my hand in a bid to drag me away, but I yanked it off.
"I asked you what is going on? Can you explain to me? I'm losing my mind already." My voice cracked, barely above the pounding in my chest. I couldn't even raise my voice even though I wanted to.
She stared at me, as if trying to confirm if I was sure about this. If I was ready to hear the truth, and if I would be strong enough to hear it.
"Alright, fine!" She exhaled. "Sorry you had to find out this way. But Rose here is pregnant with Lucas's child, and they are going to get married."
My heart twisted in my chest, and my lips trembled. I just needed to confirm it.
I opened my mouth to talk, but no word came out. The betrayal cut deeper than any dagger ever would.
"I told my son to compensate you. You should sign the divorce papers and take the money. It'll be enough to start life afresh."
Her eyes were blank. Not even as little as a bit of remorse.
"Why?"
The only word I could form as I opened my mouth. My eyes stung, but not even a single drop of tears came out.
"How could you?" My voice only bounced back at me. "Why did you do this to me?"
The betrayal didn't hurt as much as finding out who it was coming from. The same woman that I had sacrificed everything for.
She closed the distance between us, her eyes piercing into mine. "You should've kept your parents alive, Eloise... All these wouldn't have happened if you had kept them alive."
I staggered back. Somehow, tears found their way out of my eyes. I should've kept my parents alive? How could I?
"If you couldn't keep them alive, you should've hold on tightly to your inheritance. You shouldn't have lost the only thing that made you worthy of being my daughter-in-law!"
My legs gave way, and I crashed to the ground.
My eyes scanned everywhere for nothing as the pieces came back together slowly. I had been nothing but a fool all along.
When she asked to marry me for her son years ago, I thought it was because she liked me, but no... I have been lying to myself all these years. What she was attracted to was my family's wealth.
"Eloise..." She squatted down in front of me, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Just take the money and leave. It's not that hard to do, is it?"
If my parents didn't die, maybe I would've had someone to run back to, but where do I go from here now?
"I'm pregnant." My voice cracked. I didn't want to look pathetic in front of her, but I didn't have a choice.
I was hoping it'll make her change her mind, but the next words that rolled off her tongue shattered the last piece of my broken heart.
"Get rid of the child and start your life afresh, Eloise. That is the best you can do for yourself and..." she looked at my tummy and continued. "And your unborn child."
"You can't do this to me... I don't have anyone except you and Lucas... Please don't do this."
I dragged myself on my knees as she stood up to leave.
"You need to leave, Eloise. You are making me uncomfortable," She turned her back on me.
"Why don't you stop embarrassing yourself and leave?" Rose's voice slithered through the atmosphere, her voice firm and dripped with disdain.
I scoffed, biting hard into my lip.
"I'm going to call the cops on you if you keep being like this, Eloise. Just leave already." Mrs. Holt's voice came on, and I knew that it was really over.
I summoned the strength left in me, and dragged myself to my feet.
Holding my gaze low, my face burned with shame and bitterness as I dragged my feet out of her apartment, waiting for what the future has in store for me...
Chapter 3
Eloise Brooke
I fondled my fingers, my heart hammering against my ribcage as I waited in the living room for Lucas.
When I came home last night, he had already gone to bed, so I had to sleep in the living room as the door to the guest room was already locked.
I rose to my feet, cold seeping through my body as his footsteps echoed down the staircase.
Then he showed up, fully clothed in a charcoal suit.
"Goo... good morning Lucas."
His cold eyes met mine as he stood in front of me.
"Have you packed your things now?"
"Lucas---"
"Why did you go to my Mom last night? Were you hoping she'd save you?" He scoffed, tucking his hand inside his pocket, a briefcase held in the other one.
I dragged in a heavy breath, blinking my eyes to fight back my tears.
"Anyway... That's your problem... You need to leave before Rose gets here."
My eyes widened.
"She is moving in." He finalised.
"I sent five million to your account... That should be enough to start a new life." He said, turning to leave.
I held his hand. "Lucas..."
He paused, looking back at me. For a second, I searched his eyes for affection... For pity. Maybe he still felt something, and yes, I saw something. But neither of things that I wanted. Instead, what I saw were hate and disgust.
Still, I didn't give up. I couldn't. This wasn't about me anymore, but my unborn child. I couldn't allow myself to end up on the street. We can't.
"Can we not do this, please? If not for anything, but for our unborn child. We already lost one before."
He yanked my hand off, dragging his fingers through his hair. "What's the big deal in taking this out too, Eloise? You lost the first one, and you still got pregnant again in less than two years..." He placed a hand on my shoulder. "When you remarry, you can still have children. You are fertile enough." A smirk curled at the corner of his lips.
"Lucas, please---"
"Make sure you leave before Rose gets here. Consider yourself dead if she calls and tell me that you gave her problem," He glared at before leaving.
I crashed to the ground, whimpering. Is this really the end for me?
The pain in my heart wasn't as much as when I lost my parents.
I had never wished so desperately all my life for time to stop ticking. Even if I couldn't turn back the hands of time, I wanted it to at least be stuck in this time for a long time if not forever. By that, Rose won't ever show up and I won't have to leave, but it didn't happen.
Because my nightmare came haunting me the moment Rose walked in through the entrance door with her belongings.
She paused the moment she saw me.
"You still haven't left?" She scoffed. "Lucas said you'd left already. Why you are still here?" She snarled, her voice laced with rage.
"Rose..." For a second, I thought of begging her. To save me. To let me stay here. I wanted to whine to her, and who knows... She might take pity on me, but the words got stuck in my throat. For some reason, I couldn't say them to her.
She squatted in front of me, her lips curled in a smug smik. "How does it feel, Eloise? To lose everything?"
My brows furrowed.
"Your family... Lucas... And his mother. How does it feel?"
"Ro...se..." My voice cracked.
"To me, it feels good... Watching you suffer like you made me suffer feels so good. You deserve everything that's happening to you!" She laughed at me mockingly.
I clenched my fingers tightly into a ball, but I was too weak to react. What was the point of it, actually?
Without a word, I dragged myself to my room to pack my things and really leave.
My hands trembled as I folded my clothes into my suitcase, and halfway through, I heard screams from outside, accompanied by the sound of footsteps.
I ignored it and continued to fold my clothes, then the scream came on again. This time, louder and more intense than the previous one, so I was forced to drop the cloth.
However, the cold empty hallway welcomed me as I stepped out of the room. No one was there. Nothing seemed to be wrong.
"Maybe I heard wrong." I whispered, dragging my feet back into the room, but paused as what sounded like a fire alarm came from downstairs.
Rose and all the maids were outside, screaming, as I looked out through my window. The only word they kept chanting was 'fire!'.
The pungent smell of smoke caught my attention, and I grabbed my phone from the bed, dashing out of the room, but I was forced to pause along the hallway that has been covered by smoke.
"Wh...what is going on?" My legs weakened, but I didn't give in. I forced them to move. As fast as they could. Eyes squinted, hand covering my nose, head bumping into the air, and the next minute, I stood along the staircase. However, I froze at the horrifying sight that welcomed me. The house was on fire.
For seconds, I stood there, confused. Getting through the raging fire without getting burned wasn't possible.
My hands trembled as they unlocked my phone, the only words that echoed in my mind was 'Call Lucas'. And I did. Thankfully, he picked on the first ring.
"Rose, are you ok? I've called the firefighters. I'm on my way to you now. Please be safe."
My heart sank, and my grip around the phone loosened, but not enough to slip off my grip. Has he ever cared about me for a bit, even if it's not about love?
Still, I begged. "Please save me, Lucas... Save our child, please." I cried out, climbing the staircase while pressing my phone to my ear, trying to save myself from the first that was already charging towards me. Yes, running inside in this situation wasn't the best thing I could do, but maybe... Just maybe, I would be able to find a solution. Maybe I could save myself and my baby before the firefighters would get here.
"Lucas... Are you there? Please get me out of here. Don't let me die, please" I screamed terrifically on the phone, but he never replied... Until the call ended with a beep, and it was then I knew that I was alone in this.
My chest contracted tightly, my breath shallow. The smoke was stuffy. I couldn't keep my eyes open.
I should've left... When Lucas asked me to leave, I shouldn't have stayed back. Perhaps this would've been avoided if I had just left with my baby.
My room was already filled with smoke by the time I got back inside. I was hoping I could jump through the window, but the first crawling up the wall of my windows made me step back. I couldn't get through either.
There was only one thing I could think of... To give up and wait for death.
I wasn't just losing a child this time, but my life too.
I crashed to the ground, whimpering. "I don't want to die. I don't want, please."
But my voice was swallowed by my tears. It was swallowed by my muffled breath, and just like that, my eyes went close as darkness came looming over.
'If I get another chance to live, I will make them all pay for this. I will make sure I always choose myself first'
But I knew it was just wishful thinking. Something that could never come true.
But as the thought of my parents and my first lost child crossed my mind, I found myself smiling and seeing hope even in the face of pain. At least I could get to see them again. We could reunite again, without ever being apart from each other.
It was the only thing that comforted me to accept the cruel fate that was designed for me...
