Chapter 1
Maya's pov
"You are Eight weeks pregnant!" The doctor's voice kept ringing in my head as I walked out of his office.
I glanced at my stomach, caressing around it. Finally, I would be addressed by the name "Mother." Finally, it is now a family of three.
My heart was filled with joy as I ascended toward my car. I brought out my phone in the bag, I was going to call my husband. I know for sure he would be so happy to hear such news, considering how much we have waited six years without a child. Brandon has always been a lover of kids; I have found him smiling at kids' magazines and watching kids' shows. No matter how busy Brandon might be, he still visits the orphanage home, donating to various of them in the city.
"No, let's make it a two-in-one celebration," I concluded, swinging my phone around in my hand. It is our wedding anniversary the next day, a six-year journey of love with Brandon; I would be giving him the greatest gift of all time. I kept giggling and smiling throughout the drive. I made a quick stop at the store, I needed some groceries for the house.
It took me a few hours in the kitchen, making different varieties of meals, wine, and fruit all set. It was more like a pre-party for that main celebration that was yet to come.
My eye caught the clock on the wall. It was late in the evening. I have known Brandon not to be a nightcrawler, and this got me worried about what might be keeping him out this hour. Immediately, I called through his assistant, Hunter.
"He left the office earlier today. I think he has a very important appointment to attend."
"Ohh- Thank you hunter." I ended the call.
I held onto my phone tightly. I couldn't wrap my head around what could be so important that he didn't see the need to inform me. No doubt, I trusted Brandon, even though he might be sneaky at times, I still believe his words. I flipped my phone on the couch and placed a throw pillow under my head, and this time, I had no choice but to wait patiently till whenever he arrived home.
It was morning the next day. I slightly opened my eyes, seeing myself on the couch. I knew for sure I had slept there.
"Brandon!" I jotted up and found my way up the stairs.
Opening the door, Brandon, intimidating height, stood tall in the room. I took a deep breath, fidgeting with my hand, closing the gap between us.
"I didn't want to disturb your sleep last night," he said, laying his suit on.
"Are you stressed with work?" I asked while I properly knotted his necktie. "All done" I caressed his shoulder.
He didn't say any more words to me, not an answer to my question, not even about our anniversary. Maybe his week has been hectic, or maybe he had it all planned out for the day, but I couldn't wait anymore; like they say, delay can be denial.
"I have something to tell you," I spoke up.
"I also have something to give to you," he said, not glancing at me, putting some paper files in a folder.
"Oh, You go first then!" I responded, my heart pounding so loud. I guess I was just too forward; he would never have forgotten our big day.
"That's for you." I followed his eyes, and they landed on a brown envelope on top of the king-size bed.
"Okay..." wondering what could be there. Opening the envelope, inside of it was a couple of papers. I didn't bother checking through them, seeing what was encrypted at the top headline.
"So, what should I do with this?"
"You obviously can read-"
"Brandon..." my lips pursed. I had seen this coming, his late nights, skipping dinners, and cold attitude for months.
"I'll sign it," I said and his jaw dropped.
"Aren't you going to say anything else?!" he questioned. His voice came out dead, emotionless.
"Brandon, all I ever did was love you so if you want a divorce, you can have it. You don't expect me to beg for your love after making me feel responsible for our childlessness." I spat at his face. I changed my mind about sharing the good news of our child with him. It was better he remained in the dark till after the divorce.
"You will be getting enough settlement to move on with your life. Sign the papers and let's get done with this."
To hell with his money, I had enough to last me and my child throughout our lifetime.
"What if we have a kid?" I asked, trying to hear what he'd say. He halted, glanced at me, and then chuckled.
"You don't think I want to have a kid with you, do you?"
"What do you mean?"
"Maya, have you ever thought to yourself why you never got pregnant throughout our marriage? That's because I do not want you bearing my kids. Just like today, I don't want any connection or responsibility that could warrant us meeting again!"
"Pa!!!" My right hand landed on his cheek.
"What was that for?" He asked, his eyes popping out of its socket.
"That is for emotional damage, you'll get more soon."
He just shook his head, grabbed his car keys, and dashed out of the house.
Everything Brandon said flashed through my head again, solving the puzzle, obviously, there was more to what was happening. I got back in the living room, staring at the study room opposite, something stuck me in the brain.
The study room has always been Brandon's space, he never liked it anytime I went in there, more like he had something to hide. I gently opened the door and grudgingly walked towards his reading table. I moved my hand around the files on the table, I kept searching and searching everywhere without a knowledge of what I was looking for.
I sighted a small safe, I dragged it to open, but it had a security code that guarded it. I thought of so many passwords, and special dates that I could come up with, and after a third attempt, It finally opened. Inside it was a white envelope, and at the top of it was about three flash drives. I picked up the envelope, and inside of it was a file that had a hospital name on it.
"Is he sick?" I murmured under my breath reading through it. "What?!" My eyes popped out, my hands covering my mouth, my heart pounding loudly.
"A Vasectomy!"
Chapter 2
Maya POV
"How? Cleveland hospital?!"
"What!" I scanned the paper in my hand. Cleveland Hospital, the same hospital where my best friend works! Not only that, but the doctor who performed the vasectomy was my best friend, Sonia!
"How could she!" I rushed into the living room where I quickly picked up my car keys. While driving, my mind raced with thoughts, emotions, anger, and betrayal. I drove in a high speedometer, and in no time, I got to Cleveland Hospital.
"Sonia!" I pushed through the door, my voice laced with anger.
She looked up from the computer in front of her. "Maya? What is wrong?" her face looked all confused.
"This!" I slammed the papers on the table " Brandon's Vasectomy record. From your hospital! Performed by you?!"
"Maya." her facial expression changed from confusion to remorseful "I can-"
"You can what? Explain?! Sonia, you are my best friend, and you kept this from me?! How could you do this to me!" Tears filled my eyes; at this point, I didn't bother to fight them back; I let them stream down my face.
"Maya, I am so sorry," she gently held my hand as she continued in a low voice, "He came to me privately, requesting the procedure. I assumed it was a joint decision or a personal decision. I am so sorry!"
"Even though," I glanced at her, "You should have said something," my voice breaking, emotions filled it.
"I was bound by the doctor-patient confidentiality. I didn't want to ruin our friendship, I didn't want to ruin your marriage."
"Everything is ruined! Sonia," I whined. She wrapped her arms around me, patting me on the back.
"No, it's not! He did the reversal three years ago, and of course, that is why you are carrying his child," she explained.
"But why did he do the vasectomy if he was going to reverse it!"
"He didn't mention. I am glad you are finally expecting a baby," she responded, still happy about my baby.
"You know what, I will sort this myself ." I was going to handle it myself, leaving Sonia out of my messy marriage, which was ending anyway.
As we walked out to the hospital corridor, I sensed something was off. People were staring at me while whispering and murmuring; some faces showed pity, and other faces showed curiosity. I could sense they were talking about me. Sonia held my hand and we hastened our paces. My phone suddenly beeped, and it wouldn't stop and the sound of it was disturbing.
"No, this can't be!" My eyes are on the phone screen. I couldn't believe what I had just read: "
Brandon Peris announced his marriage with Ella Reed after ending his previous marriage."
My heart stopped. My vision was blurry, and my phone slipped from my hand, landing on the floor.
Sonia grabbed me "Are you okay?" She gently picked up the phone "What?! Ella! Your stepsister!"
"I need to go right now," I said, finally gasping for air.
"Do you want me to come with you? I can close for the day." Sonia suggested, her eyes filled with pity.
"No, it's nothing I can't handle. I will give you a call." I waved at her and then drove away.
I got to the office building; my steps faced moving, the determination was all I felt at that moment.
"I am sorry Maya, Mr Peris is busy. You can't go in." Hunter blocked my way to his office. My eyes popped out; how I suddenly became who couldn't go into his office was what I couldn't comprehend.
"Hunter, I need to see him. Now!" I said firmly. He hesitated a few minutes before putting a call through Brandon.
"You may go in." My heart raced fast as I walked to the door; I took a deep breath and pushed through the door, ready for whatever was yet to come. Brandon sat behind his desk; beside him was Ella, my stepsister! My leg froze, staring at my sister who smiled, snuggling.
"Look whom we have here; long time no see, sister!" She caressed Brandon on the shoulder. I grounded my teeth; for one, I never liked the idea of seeing my sister. It was peaceful without her, but now she was back.
"You witch! What have you come to do?" She gently placed a kiss on Brandon's lips.
"Too bad, I thought you would be happy to see me. I miss you!"
"Get off your-"
"What do you want?" Brandon interrupted, not glancing at me, his eyes filled with love and care, the same one I have lugged for all my life but it wasn't me who got it. I locked eyes with Ella.
"You are engaged?"
"Yes, we are!" Brandon responded, and a little smile appeared on his face.
"You never loved me, did you?" My heart was racing fast, just this one last question to make my final decision. Maybe he once loved me, maybe he grew out of love, maybe he has been manipulated by my sister, I just want to hear from him directly.
He chuckled, held Ella's hand, caressing it softly "I just love the idea of you! I love the company you bring along!"
"What-" my lips pursed. My heart sank. I realized I had been too blinded by love to see his true intentions.
"This- company," I said, my voice shaking, "It is mine! It belongs to me and I want it back!"
"I'm afraid that is not possible!" He granted.
"You must be joking!" I laughed, acting tough.
"You are the joker here." He jotted up the chair and walked towards his shelf, and he picked up a folder of files.
"Have it!" He flipped the folder on the floor.
"What is it?"
"Look through it. That is the evidence that I owned this company! You have signed over the right of ownership, your shares into my name!"
My legs became heavy; I grudgingly dragged it toward the folder. I picked it up, and tears filled my eyes, seeing how I destroyed myself, giving out the only thing left for me. My world crumbling before my eyes!
Chapter 3
Maya POV
One year into our marriage, I figured it didn't suit me well to be addressed as the CEO while my husband is seen as just a worker, having his lunch in the same place with those I employed, so I gave my office to Brandon. Instead of having to continue working as partners, he suggested I just be a full-time wife taking care of the house while he oversees the company. I never knew I was digging my downfall, and now I can't even save myself.
"No, No, No." I began to rip the papers inside the folder.
"Too bad, this is just one of the copies. Maya, stop it!" Brandon snapped out but I won't stop as I continued ripping the papers.
"You are just so predictable!" Ella said, laughing. "You are no match for me!" she added, got up on her feet, and moved towards me.
"You are evil! How could you do this to me? Even after father gave you the largest share of what was originally mine?!"
Father has always chosen Ella over me; countless times, his actions tell how much he loves his foster daughter over his biological daughter! I thought it was a good idea to let Father adopt Ella, all I wanted was a sister, the one whose smile would make me forget the pain of a child whose mother died during childbirth, all I wanted was a sister so badly, it doesn't matter if we are related by blood, I just want to have a sisterly affection. Ella was the opposite of what I wanted. Still, I let her have all that she wanted.
"You conspire with this loser! This shitty being that I picked up from the gu-"
"Pa!" Her hand flipped across the air landing so hard on my face. I placed my hand on my face, breathing up and down. Anger and rot boiling through my veins, I was like a ticking bomb.
"It is good enough that you have taken away everything from me, Not my dignity, Ella!" I grabbed her by the hair, pulling it with every last strength in me.
"Enough!" Brandon pulled me, pushing me and making me fall to the ground. I sat on the floor with a broken heart, tears filling my eyes, watching the man I dedicated my whole life to caring for another woman.
"Are you okay?" he pulled Ella to his arm while staring at me; he added, "I want you out of here, and I do not want to see you anywhere around my property!"
"Your property!" I chuckled dryly. "This is not the end of it! Brandon, I will make you pay!"
"I am sure you don't want me calling those you employed, throwing you out of here. Such a lovely view that I would love to watch."
"Sh**t." I used every single power that was left in me, standing on my feet and finally walking out of the one thing I worked so hard to build.
ONE MONTH LATER.
"Maya!" Sonia rushed to get the door, welcoming me home for the day. She held my hand, walking towards the living room.
"How did it go?" She requested, in her hand, a glass of chilled water, exactly what I needed at the moment. I gently gulped down my throat feeling so refreshed.
It's been a month since I had the most messy divorce you could think of in the world. My best friend Sonia has been the one with me on this journey. She accommodated me in her house, making sure I did not lack anything. Not just that, she also makes herself available out of her busy schedule, spending time with me so I won't have to dwell in the past.
"It has been finalized," my voice came out low.
"You will be fine," she responded, gently rubbing my hand.
"Sure, at least I got a little alimony. That I could use to get back on my feet " I said, assuring myself.
"You deserve more compared to all you have been through, the bastard took away your company!"
"I promise I will get it back!" I smiled. It is just a strike that I needed, I know what I'm capable of and that has been my strength.
"Would you like to relocate to Canada? I know someone, Madam Lawson, she is a great business mogul and I am sure if I put in one or two words, she would see to it. She had the largest company In the whole of Toronto."
"Really?! That would be nice!" Exactly the strike that I needed.
**************
It was an early beautiful morning, the sun radiating through the window. I jotted up the bed. I have got an early flight to catch. Madam Lawson finally set up a meeting. She wanted us to have a deep conversation physically and then pick it up immediately. I gently got inside the bathroom, and in no time, I was done.
" Hey mum," Sonia teased.
"How is my baby doing today?" She towered her hand and placed her head on my stomach.
"She is kicking!"
"What are we celebrating?" I asked, glancing through everything arranged on the table. On top of it were different varieties of meals.
"Celebration of your new job!"
"I haven't even gotten it yet!" I smiled.
"No, you got it already! All you need is to land in Canada and let Madam Lawson handle the rest."
"I am glad to have you in my corner," a little smile on my face, staring at Sonia, whose eyes were filled with joy.
"You have got me always; let's dig into the meal," I smiled, nodding my head. I ate the little I could digest, finished, and quickly went up the stairs to get my phone. I needed to send an important email.
"Almost done," I murmured under my breath, my eyes fixed on my phone, gently taking my steps on the stairs.
"Haa!" My leg fell on a step, my phone fell to the ground, and I slipped.
"Maya! Are you okay?" I could hear Sonia's voice as she came running.
"No- my back-" my lips pursed. It seemed like I could feel something strange. In between my legs, I could feel something. I raised my dress and slipped my hand in between my legs. "Blood!!!"
