*Slap*
The entire room gasped, snickering and laughing, pointing their fingers in ridicule to me.
"Hahaha! She is so done for today." Someone said,
"Honestly, she is just a pain in the ass." Another person said.
"I honestly don't understand why the last Alpha spared her a glance." Someone else sneered... their voices dropped into my head with venom. Their words sliced through my heart, painful just as always.
I felt it, hard and burning, stinging my cheek. My vision blurred with tears, tears threatening to escape my eyes as I held my cheek.
I lifted my face to meet her gaze, Kelly... Jax's younger sister who I was clearly older than, standing high and mighty. Her eyes staring down at me with pure disgust.
I stood up straight, turning to search for Jax, he was sitting on his throne. He casually scanned me, a hint of care in his eyes but he took his eyes off me.
I took a deep breath to calm myself, looking at the ground.
"You wrench! Why did you get me pork meat when I asked for sheep?!" She screamed, poking my forehead aggressively, continuously, in an attempt to push me down. I kept quiet, still facing the ground.
She stared a little longer, trying to catch if I would drop a reaction but I didn't.
It seemed like my silence made her bored and caused her to go away. When she left, I walked to the kitchen sitting with the maids.
Only they understood me in this entire town because I am being treated like them.
" Hey Maya." Rachel called out, her voice soft as she walked up to me with a piece of cake, dropping it in front of me. I tried to smile but my cheek was swollen and so it was hard.
" It's okay. I'm so sorry about what happened out there." She said dipping her hands into her apron pocket.
" Thanks, it's okay." I said biting into the cake.
" Girl, it is not okay, it actually isn't okay." Natasha said, wiping the table, anger evident in her voice. I knew it wasn't okay but what could I do? I love Jax and he loves me too...it is just hard for him to express his love.
" Natasha?" Rachel called out, her voice in a warning tone.
"It's okay Rachel... she's actually right." I said taking the last bite of the cake staring at the window. Natasha looked at Rachel with a ' I told you' look.
" But what choice do I have? I love Jax... and I'm sure he feels the same too." I said silently hope but the doubt that crept in my heart was much louder.
The ladies exchanged looks and slapped their heads in unison.
"They have all forgotten so soon who the Alpha of this clan was." Natasha said disappointment, sitting on a stool by my side.
A tear slid down my face , I bit down the inside of my mouth, trying hard to fight back tears and muffle my cry.
Rachel held me as I cried, patting my back to calm me down.
"Maybe you should go to your room and take a nap. Don't overthink it." Natasha said is a small voice, I nodded and left the kitchen.
I walked to the room they had reserved for me only after I lost my dad. A cramped space next to the toilet, which was supposed to be a storage room.
I collapsed on the tiny bed and weeped, it has always been this way, since my father died and left Jax as the Alpha just so he can marry me as his fated mate but Jax... is nothing but harsh to me.
I buried my face in pillow, hearing voices on the other side of the room. It sounded like Jax's voice.
"You don't get to treat Maya that way." He said.
"Why not? I told her to do something so simple but she couldn't! She's incompetent!" The other voice which seemed to belong to Kelly said angrily.
"Why would you send her to get something for you? She's not a maid!" Jax's voice was rising with impatience.
"Neither is she one of us!" She retorted.
"You don't get to dictate that! Don't treat her like that, if you need to get something call one of the maids but not Maya!" He said then I heard a stomp on the ground.
He was defending me! Maybe he has been defending me all this time and I have overthinking it all this time, I wiped my tears, smiling to myself.
I knew he felt something for me. I thought as the door flung open.
It was Jax but he looked angry!
I shot up, sitting on the bed, staring at him, unaware of his next move.
He carefully walked towards me as if careful enough not to wake a sleeping baby up. He sat next to me, pulling me into a hug, I was surprised but warmth quickly covered my surprise.
My heart involuntarily aching,my eyes welling with tears as they dripped, wetting his suit.
(He cares! He actually cares! I knew he loved me, I knew it) I thought, rejoicing in my heart.
" It's okay. I know the clan hasn't been nice to you since your dad died. I'm really sorry.". Jax said his voice filled with warmth , patting my back.
" But why are they all like this? My father was good to everyone, what did I do?" I asked, my voice shaking, filled with tears.
" It's okay. Don't overthink it..." he said as if avoiding my question.
After about ten minutes, he let go of me, standing up to arrange and dust off his suit. That gesture made me flinch, was I dirty?
"I have a meeting to attend to." He said, looking down at me on the bed before looking at the room, shifting uncomfortably.
"Move into the room next to mine." He said and with that he left. I stared at him, a smile crossed my face. He turned to walk away but he stopped in his tracks.
" Freshen up and dress nice, I have a surprise for you." He said, his face to the door before walking out.
A new room? A surprise?! Today must be my lucky day. Yesss! I guess Natasha and Rachel were wrong about Jax.
I happily stood from the bed, packing up my little belongings to the room next to his.
I walked to the room, dropping my stuff on the ground then bounced on the bed.
Taking a deep breath, I took off my clothes to take a shower.
I went into the bathroom which was the size of the storage I was squeezing in.
Turning on the shower, I let the hot water run down my body, feeling the doubt I had for Jax slipping away.
I heard the door of the room opening, then it closed. I felt uneasy , so I turned off the shower, putting on a bathrobe before stepping out of the bathroom, only to see Olivia, my stepsister.
She was staring at my stuff with a bewildered expression.
"What do you want?" I asked, crossing my hands across my chest, she lifted her face to meet my eyes, transitioning from bewildered to pure unhidden disgust!
" I should be asking you that, sister." She said walking towards me. Ever since we were little, Olivia never liked me for anything. I tried loving her but she was a demon. I even thought that was how she was to everyone but she was like that towards me alone.
"This room was reserved for me!" She said,
I rolled my eyes, walking past her to the wardrobe to get something clean to wear. She turned to face me, staring daggers at me.
" Well, for your information... Jax, my mate, asked me to move in here. If you have a problem, you should go to him to object." I said in a flat tone, taking out a beautiful white floral off shoulder dress, smiling to myself.
She lost her cool.
She pounced on me like a wild beast that she was, biting my arm and taking a chunk of my skin away, blood was everywhere. I screamed in pain, a weird surge of power rushing through me, I punched her in her abdomen and that was it.
She screamed, wriggling and clutching her stomach in pain. I retreated to a corner in less than a minute, the door sprang opened with Jax, two elders and onlookers staring at us.
" What's the meaning of this?" Jax asked, staring back and forth from the both of us.
" It was Maya! I only wanted to check out her room but she went crazy." She said, pointing at me, all her viciousness, disappearing at the sight of people. Of course!
"Of course it's Maya! She is such a brute!" One of the elders said.
"How could she be so vicious?!" The other elder said, the onlookers humming in agreement, a triumphant smile reaching her lips.
"Don't you all have eyes? I'm the one with a torn up, bloody arm and she? No single injury but her face and mouth is filled with blood, even my flesh is by her leg. Nobody sees that! You all turn blind eyes to simple and clear evidence." I said angrily.
Truly, are these people blind? That they don't see the truth? Or do they see it and refuse to accept it?
No one said anything after that, I clutched my hand in pain, tears already trickling down my eyes, Jax walked to me and carried me bridal style.
I stared at him, I saw it ... in his eyes. He cares. I glanced over his shoulder to see Olivia's face twisted in malice. He carried me all the way to the infirmary.
" Mrs James, please attend to Maya now!" Jax said in a serious tone, laying me on a bed while Mrs James walked to me with a band aid.
Jax left, leaving just me and Mrs James. We never got along for a very weird reason, she had always hated my guts, since I was a kid. After she watched Jax leave, she sneered and threw the band-aid at me.
"Skank!" She muttered before leaving. In less than a minute, Courtney, one of the little nurses came to attend to me. She was also my friend but we were not so close because of Mrs James.
"Hey Maya!" She greeted me, examining my wound.
" Ouch! Someone bit you?" She asked me , trying to disinfect my injured arm with spirit. I winced in pain as I nodded.
" I'm so sorry", she said. She stopped the bleeding and wrapped my arm in the band-aid. "All done!" She announced. I thanked her then left.
I walked back to my new room. The white dress I wanted to wear had been destroyed with blood.
I checked the wardrobe and I saw a perfect dress. It was a red, long, long sleeved dress with a slit at the side. I took it out and wore it, preparing for the surprise Jax had said was awaiting me.
Everyone was already preparing for the event.
The banquet was arranged once every six months, that's twice a year. It was organized for the moon goddess to bless and announce destined mates and for them to be made known to the clan.
I and Jax were lovers for a long time, so the moon goddess granted my wish and we were destined to be... but that was six months ago and he didn't mark me then.
I didn't know when he intended to mark me and proclaim me as his Luna, nor did I rush him into doing it.
I stared at myself in the mirror, smiling to myself.
"What a pretty damsel!"
I turned around to meet Rachel's beautiful smile, her smile lighting up the room. I chuckled, truly happy.
"What's up, Rachel?" I asked as she gave me a warm hug.
"I heard what Olivia did to you. I'm so sorry," Rachel said, her eyes filled with concern.
"I am fine now," I responded gently, pulling away.
"Why are you all dolled up? You look stunning!" she said, staring at me with a wide smile.
"Thank you," I said, my cheek heating up.
"Alpha Jax calls for you!"
I turned back to see Kelly staring daggers at me. She sneered, then left.
"I have to go."
Rachel gave me a small nod and with that, she left. I looked at myself one last time, taking a deep breath before stepping out of the room.
All eyes turned to me, all in surprise, awe, amazement - something that I had never seen. I walked down the stairs to meet Jax, who was staring at me, his eyes never leaving me. The hall was full, the elders and Jax's relatives sat together. The elites hunters and warriors at one table, while commoners together.
Was he going to mark me?
I stared at him, his eyes burning with something I couldn't quite tell. I strode to meet him where he stood.
He held my hand, turning to face the elders.
" We are all gathered to know my fated mate and so I announce Maya Crawford, the daughter of late Alpha as my fated mate and Mrs Stanley."
No noise... no cheers... only the maids, security personnel, and the loudest, Rachel and Natasha, those were the only people who ever cared about me .
A hint of sadness crossed Jax's eyes. He turned to me, planted a kiss on my lips, then trailed down to my neck. He licked my neck, then asked,
"Are you ready?"
I nodded calmly.
Then came his sharp teeth sinking into my skin for some minutes, the reluctant applause from the clan was heard.
He stared in curiosity at my neck, blood trickling down... but not only blood, something else trickled down my neck.
He looked, his brows furrowing as he stared at my neck, watching the shiny blue liquid mix with my blood. I touched my neck to see what caused him to look at me like that. I saw purple liquid dripping down little by little, I quickly covered it.
The room erupted with gasps. Fingers pointing accusingly at me, I started feeling panicked.
"She's cursed, she has purple blood!" One of the elders screamed, his veins bulging out.
" Yes! A purple blood is cursed!" Someone else yelled.
"No, I have red blood not purple." I shook my head trying to defend myself. Fear steadily creeping into me.
Jax stood in front of me, shielding me from the crowd.
" She's not cursed! She has both red and blue blood." He said sternly but the clan wasn't having it.
"Why does she have two blood types? She's a witch! No wonder you are protecting her! She has bewitched you!" I heard someone say. People agreed with him, protesting me as the Luna of the clan.
(What?! Are these people mad?) I stared at the crowd, my temples thumping to the rhythm of the noise coming from the crowd.
" What nonsense are you spitting? Maya Crawford is My Luna! She is not a witch!" Jax said, patience slipping from his tone.
" She is not a pure werewolf! She can't be a Luna!" One of the elders said tapping his walking stick to the ground. " She is going to weaken the clan system."
Jax didn't defend me. He kept quiet, soaking up all the noise around him.
"That's not true! The first Alpha of this clan, Alpha Leonard married a hybrid, and they both lived and ruled well." I said boldly. The hall fell silent. I scoffed, knowing fully well they knew I was right.
They were all just against me for no good reason or a reason at all.
Jax turned to me and gave me a small nod, then turned back to the crowd.
"I will say it this last time! Maya Crawford is my Luna!" He took my hand and led me to his room, leaving the crowd to whisper, grumble and mumble to their heart's desire.
"You stay here now okay? You are now my wife." He said, settling on the bed, running his hand through his hair. I knew he usually did that when he was stressed or under pressure.
I crouched down to his level and kissed him deeply. He carried me on his thigh then continued kissing me passionately.
While we were in an intense moment, someone burst in.
It was Olivia.
We reluctantly separated from each other before we both turned to see her standing there, wearing a deep V-neck dress, looking all naïve, innocent and fragile.
I rolled my eyes so much, I thought they would pop out.
"What do you want?" I asked in a controlled voice.
"You don't just burst into our room like that if we were naked?"
She looked like a frightened mouse, the trick she pulled to gain favour from people or to make her look like she was being bullied.
" I ... I " she started, the rim of her eyes looking red.
"Speak up and quickly. We are about to be intimate," I said in agonizing pain.
"You're interrupting."
"I thought to have the room next to yours... if you don't mind," she said timidly.
"Why?" Jax was about to say something but I cut him off.
"Why would I mind? Sure, you can have it," I said, catching Jax's lips again.
"You stuff!!!" she said, almost yelling....her eyes flashing with anger for a second...
but I caught it.
I smirked, standing up from Jax then walking past her to the room my belongings were.
I walked in, searching the bag, hoping it had everything complete in it, but I couldn't find my father's funeral urn.
I searched over and over again but it wasn't there.
Fear slowly crept in me, blood rushing to my head. I heard the door clicking. I turned to see Olivia smiling wickedly.
I knew she had done something about it.
"Where is it? Where's my father's urn? Where is it?" I asked furiously, anger flooding my chest as I stared at her.
An evil smile glazed her face, her eyes speaking nothing but evil.
She took out a pocket knife slowly from behind her. She held it up and slit her own arm. I stared at her like she was a psycho!
"Are you crazy Olivia?!" I asked , she looked like nothing had happened. She then took her sapphire necklace, it resembled the one her mother gave her before passing away and in a split second she crashed it to the ground.
The sound caught a lot of attention from visitors that were still around.
I was beyond shocked. She let out a shrieking noise in pure pretence. The last trick up her sleeve, she threw the pocket knife directly at my face, I caught it with my hand from the blade, making it slice my palm.
Then the finishing move, she burst into tears, ripping her dress , parts of her cleavages out. I was beyond shocked at this point.
"Maya, why! How could you do this?" She cried, picking up pieces of her necklace, holding it to her half exposed chest.
Onlookers seeing the scene already concluded I was the villain, barging into the room.
" Why? You know this is the only thing my dead mother left me! How could you?!" She cried louder, practically rolling on the ground.
I instinctively dropped the knife but I was already being blamed. I was already being blamed.
I was still in a daze when I received a slap that turned my head in the opposite direction. My ears rang, my cheek stinging, my eyes watering.
I lifted my head up to meet Jax's angry face, I shook my head trying to establish what had just happened. Jax slapped me, because of Olivia.
" Why? Why would you do this? To your own sister." Jax yelled protectively, a tone I had never witnessed.
I didn't do anything! She's just faking it!" I tried to protect myself.
"Lock her up!" I heard Jax cold voice say
"What?!"
