Ximena Griffin didn't know how many times she had dialed Ramon Mitchell's number in the past hour, but all her attempts had been unsuccessful.
She had just given birth to their baby. How could he be this heartless?
The white hospital blanket crumpled in her hands, her vision blurry. She bit her lower lip so hard in exasperation that her teeth pricked blood out. Outside, she could faintly hear someone demanding for the doctor to keep the baby alive. At that moment, she remembered that today was Ramon's wedding to another woman.
She knew he only wanted to keep the baby, not her.
He even already had a name for the baby and a new mother to replace her.
How preposterous!
Fighting back the tears and taking in the excruciating pain all over her body, Ximena held her baby tightly in her arms.
All of a sudden, the door of the delivery room opened from the outside. A bunch of people barged in, including Melanie Griffin.
The colors drained from Ximena's face. She held the baby closer and looked daggers at the people in front of her.
Melanie regarded her with disdain and said pointedly, "Give me the baby, Ximena. This is what you owe my sister. If anything happens to the baby, Ramon will kill you."
"I didn't do anything to Lyla!" Ximena retorted strongly.
Unfazed, Melanie sneered, "That doesn't matter anymore. If Ramon believes it's your fault, then it's your fault! Give me the baby. He will help Lyla get into the Mitchell family and become Ramon's wife. My family will rejoice at this. As for you, you'll rot in prison because of what you did to her!"
"No! I have nothing to do with what happened to her! You can't take my baby!" Ximena refused vehemently.
She was innocent! Why would Ramon believe that nonsense and punish her like this?
This was unfair! She carried the baby in her womb for nine months and loved him with all her heart. She would never let anyone take him away.
With her trembling hands, Ximena picked up her phone and dialed Ramon's number again and again but to no avail. Eventually, Ramon's phone was switched off.
Melanie jeered, "Do you really think Ramon will answer? Stop dreaming. You're nothing but a tool for him. Now that you've delivered the baby, you've become useless. Ramon divorced you because he was so disgusted by you and would rather marry Lyla while she's still in a vegetative state than be with you. Wake up, Ximena. Ramon never loved you."
Ximena felt like her heart shattered to pieces hearing Melanie's words. She couldn't believe Ramon could be this cruel. Their two-year marriage was nothing to him, and she was none other than a stepping stone for Lyla to marry into the Mitchell family!
Suddenly, a sharp pain spread in her lower abdomen. Ximena groaned in horror and shock. It felt like her whole body was being ripped apart. Then, she felt the blood in her thighs, flowing down her legs and into the white floor. Her breathing became labored as if she was going to pass out.
The nurse gasped and shouted in panic, "She's hemorrhaging!"
Melanie only watched as Ximena slowly collapsed to the floor and demanded, "What are you standing there for? Get the baby! Make it quick, or you will all regret it!"
The baby in Ximena's arms was hurriedly snatched away.
Ximena passed out and dropped to the floor, blood pooling around her, but no one from the group of people who barged in seemed to care.
Learning about Ximena's condition, the hospital's surgical team hurriedly issued a consent form to operate on her, but no one was willing to sign it.
Everyone knew Ramon didn't love Ximena. She and her baby were just a pawn to help Ramon's beloved woman, Lyla Griffin, marry into the Mitchell family.
No one cared about Ximena's safety because Ramon was done with her. To these people, her death would be a much better outcome.
Shortly after Ximena was taken to the emergency room, the doctor came out and dejectedly reported that she had flatlined. Melanie didn't look surprised and immediately left with the baby after that.
The bright lights of the corridor accentuated the redness of Ximena's blood on the floor.
On the side was the neglected consent form, blemished with bloodstains.
However, as soon as Melanie and the others left, the medical attendant rushed outside of the emergency room and reported to the doctor, "We've got a problem, Doc! The patient... There are two more babies in her womb..."
Four years after that fateful day, an adorable little boy sat silently in his room in the Griffin family's villa.
The boy had deep eyes and a cold expression, making him look mature beyond his age. Everything about his face looked perfect except the faint slap mark on his cheek.
The door suddenly opened from the outside, revealing Melanie in her red haute couture gown and stilettos.
Her fancy makeup didn't hide her irritation at seeing the boy still undressed for the event. "The guests are here, Neil. Change into your clothes now and come out with me."
"I'm not going out," Neil Mitchell replied coldly.
Melanie scowled, walking up to the boy in angry steps. "I said change into your formal clothes now!"
"I don't want to!" Neil faced her, his swollen cheek in view.
Melanie fumed. Her blazing eyes caught the Lego castle Neil had built, and she toppled it down with her hand in a loud crash.
Neil watched in disbelief as the Lego set shattered to the floor, tears instantly welling up in his eyes. Wiping them away, he shouted, "Aunt Melanie! I spent the whole night building that. Why did you knock it down?"
Hearing the word "Aunt" angered Melanie more. It was a constant reminder that she had gained everything she had now because of Neil.
Her eyes were cold as she said, "That's what you get for being stubborn. Now, go downstairs."
"I hate you!" Neil hissed, picking up the formal clothes on the floor and hurling them in Melanie's direction.
Melanie immediately grabbed his wrist and looked him dead in the eye. "Listen, Neil. You would have been abandoned at the orphanage if it weren't for me. So, I don't care if you hate me, but you have to hold it in until the end of the party and all the guests have left. Otherwise, I will send you to the orphanage!"
It was the first time in four years that Ramon had organized a grand birthday party for Neil.
But for Melanie, it was a precious opportunity to get close to Ramon after so many years. She would never let this stubborn boy ruin her future.
"If you don't want to go downstairs, then stay here forever and don't ever come out!" Melanie stormed out of the bedroom and locked the door from the outside.
Fear immediately covered Neil's face. The last time he was locked up, he was so scared because everything was dark and creepy, and he only had mice to keep him company. It traumatized him so much that he developed a phobia of being alone and in the dark.
The poor boy ran toward the closed door and banged it with his little hands, crying and pleading, "Aunt Melanie, I'm sorry! Please open the door! I don't want to be alone! I'm scared! I promise to behave! Auntie, please!"
Neil's loud and mournful cry echoed throughout the entire villa. The Griffins became extremely annoyed by it.
"When will that brat stop crying?" Tracy Griffin rolled her eyes impatiently. "He's such a worthless trash, just like his dead mother. So fucking annoying."
Melanie frowned. "Mom, don't you remember? Neil is Lyla's son. What does he have to do with that despicable woman?"
Tracy's eyes widened as she quickly covered her mouth in realization and looked around. Fortunately, no one else was there. "When will Ramon come to pick you and that brat up?"
"He's on his way already, but Neil doesn't want to go with us," Melanie replied.
Tracy said through gritted teeth, "Well, he won't stop crying. I think you should drag him out and give him a beating so he can know his place."
"Hell no. If someone sees me beating up a child, who knows what they'll say about us? Even though Ramon doesn't like Ximena, Neil is still his son."
Despite Melanie's dislike for Neil, she understood that he was Ramon's only son and her family was relying on him to win the favor of the Mitchell family. If she wanted to be with Ramon, she still needed to use Neil as leverage.
She could spare him for now. If he didn't behave himself at the birthday banquet, she would have to deal with him later.
While Melanie and Tracy were talking, Neil had managed to climb out of the upstairs bedroom window...
All of a sudden, everyone in the villa heard a loud sound. They instantly became startled when they heard the noise.
"What was that sound?" Melanie anxiously asked.
As if to answer her question, the guards outside began screaming, saying, "Neil fell off the building!"
Melanie's face instantly turned pale. "What? Neil fell off the building?!"
As soon as she sprinted outside, the first thing that caught her attention was a boy lying in a pool of his own blood. It was Neil.
"Ramon is coming to pick him up! What do I do?!" Melanie shouted in a panic.
By that point, two glaring headlights were shining in the distance as the Mitchell family's convoy drove towards the Griffin family's villa.
The Griffins looked at Neil-who was lying in his own pool of blood. They were frightened. None of them knew what to do.
Melanie could feel cold sweat drip from her forehead as her hands trembled. Despite feeling that way, she mustered the courage to run over and stop the convoy by going right in front of it.
"Ramon, something happened! Neil fell from the window!"
In that instant, the convoy came to a halt, and everyone looked panic-stricken.
Tears immediately welled up in Melanie's eyes as soon as she saw Ramon.
"I don't know how it happened. Neil insisted on locking himself in his room; I didn't expect him to be so careless and fall from the window. I'm so sorry, Ramon. This is all my fault. I didn't take good care of him and-"
"Where is he?" Ramon interrupted-not even giving Melanie another chance to speak. The tone of his voice was laced with pure anger.
Hands still trembling, Melanie pointed over at Neil, who was covered in blood, motionless.
Ramon's eyes went bloodshot as he grabbed Melanie by the collar and shouted, "If anything happens to him, you'll pay for it!"
Melanie's eyes went wide in shock. She was so frightened that tears began streaming down her face.
Ignoring everything else, Ramon hurriedly rushed Neil to the hospital.
The hospital director spared no time in letting Ramon take his son inside the hospital. Neil was badly injured and he needed immediate surgery. Fortunately, many doctors were on duty tonight. However, due to the influence of the Mitchell family, the director decided to have a renowned doctor, whom he had spent a lot of money to hire from abroad, perform the surgery on Neil personally.
"Dr. Griffin, your patient today is a three-year-old boy. He's Mr. Mitchell's only son, so you have to be extra careful during the surgery. It has to be successful no matter what," the director demanded. "Or else, his death will bring huge trouble to the hospital."
Ximena nonchalantly tied her hair up before looking at the X-ray results. "Of course, I'll do my best to save every patient, whoever they are. But wait... Mr. Mitchell? Which one?"
"Ramon Mitchell, the most powerful man in Fairedge. You must have heard of the Mitchell family, right?"
She instinctively clenched her fists. Even though she was wearing a mask, a look of astonishment was evident on her face. She didn't expect that she would have to encounter Ramon shortly after working in this hospital. But the most important thing is-how could he have a son?
"Ramon has a son?" Ximena asked in surprise.
"Yes, a young boy. He's currently three years old." The director nodded. "Didn't I tell you about the child's situation just now?"
"Ramon's ex-wife has already passed away. Where did this child come from?" Ximena raised an eyebrow. "If the boy was his ex-wife's, he should be four years old by now."
"The boy is Lyla Griffin's son. Not long after Ramon's ex-wife passed away four years ago, Lyla regained her consciousness. A year later, she gave birth to a son-Neil Mitchell. The boy has just turned three this year."
Ximena felt a sharp pain in her chest when she heard that. The gleam in her eyes vanished the instant she realized that the boy was Lyla's son.
She put down the surgical gown in her hand and looked at the director. "Sir, I'm sorry, but I can't perform this surgery."
The director's eyes widened. "Why? You promised just now! Why can't you?"
"I just came back from abroad and I don't feel well right now. You can have Dr. Young perform this surgery," Ximena replied, trying to calm herself down.
She wasn't a lenient person. She could perform surgeries on any other people, but Lyla's kid wasn't one of them.
After that, Ximena turned around and left. The director immediately chased after her.
Meanwhile, Ramon anxiously waited outside the operating room for the doctor to arrive. Since the doctor was late, his anger had reached a breaking point.
When Ramon heard that the lead surgeon wanted to back out, he couldn't contain his anger anymore and ordered the bodyguards to follow him and confront her.
Tension hung in the air as Ximena stood still in the quiet corridor.
She could feel someone's cold gaze behind her-stabbing her like a sharp blade. She suspected that if she were to leave now, the man behind her wouldn't hesitate to teach her a lesson.
But so what?
Four years ago, she had called Ramon so many times, but he had refused to come and see her one last time. And now, despite that, he wanted her to save his son?
How ridiculous!
Seething with rage, Ximena's body trembled slightly. As soon as she turned around, her eyes met Ramon's fierce gaze. He was just like before-lofty and insensitive. She forgot how much she had loved this man back then. At that moment, all she felt for him was pure hatred.
"Mr. Mitchell, I'm not feeling well today, so I can't perform surgery on your son. Don't worry; Dr. Young is an experienced surgeon. I'll go and find him now," she declared icily.
Upon hearing her voice, Ramon's heart skipped a beat.
A hint of surprise was evident in his eyes as he slowly walked toward the woman in front of him-keeping his gaze on her.
She was currently wearing a mask that almost covered her entire face. Despite the smell of disinfectant permeating the air, Ramon could smell a vague, familiar scent coming from her.
"What if I insist that you perform this surgery today?" Ramon demanded. "What will you do?"
As soon as he said that, his bodyguards immediately surrounded Ximena.
Ximena's breathing became rapid as she frowned and clenched her fists. "I will not perform this surgery no matter what you say. You can kill me, but it won't make a difference."
The director almost lost his temper. He couldn't believe that the doctor he paid a considerable salary would dare to say such a thing.
As for Melanie, she had never thought that she would meet someone more audacious than the late Ximena.
Looking at the doctor in front of her, she folded her arms over her chest and scowled. "Who do you think you are? Performing an operation on Ramon's son is a privilege! Get off your high horse. If you dare to do anything to jeopardize his condition, you'll spend your whole life paying for it."
"If it's such a privilege, you should do it yourself," Ximena retorted without hesitation.
Melanie couldn't believe her ears. Grabbing Ramon's hand, she complained, "Ramon, did you hear what she just said? If anything happens to Neil, it's all her fault."
Ximena burst into laughter. "How ridiculous! Did I push him off the building? How is it my fault?"
Those words touched a nerve for Melanie, and her face turned pale. She hurriedly said, "Stop spouting nonsense. Neil fell on his own! No one pushed him. Are you a doctor or not? Didn't you take the Hippocratic oath? How can you stand here and waste time while a patient is dying inside the operating room? What grudge do you have against Neil?"
Then, turning to the hospital director, she continued, "Don't you have a screening system while hiring doctors? How did this woman become a doctor here? If anything happens to Neil, I'll sue you!"
Trembling in fear, the director repeatedly apologized to both Melanie and Ramon. Then, he quickly arranged for Dr. Young to perform the surgery instead.
However, just when Dr. Young was about to enter the operating room, Ramon stopped him.
Then, he turned his fierce gaze to Ximena. "You must perform this surgery," he ordered in a tone that was low but dangerous.
Snorting in disdain, Ximena turned to walk away.
It was this action that finally pushed Ramon over the edge. With one swift step, he stood in front of Ximena and grabbed her by the throat.
"Ramon Mitchell, you damn bastard, let go of me!" Ximena cursed, clawing at his hand.
A glint of coldness flashed in Ramon's eyes. There were few people in the world who would dare to talk to him this way. One of them was his dead ex-wife.
As Ramon stared at the woman struggling in front of him with fury blazing in her eyes, he paused and conjured up the appearance of his ex-wife in his mind. He remembered well that Ximena had a pair of striking, beautiful eyes, just like this fierce doctor standing before him.
Ramon's lips curved up into a humorless smirk. "If something happens to Neil today, you'll be the one responsible for it. This whole hospital will pay the price!"
As if to drive home his point, he shoved the doctor to the floor, finally letting go of her throat.
Sitting on the floor, Ximena coughed a few times. She could still feel the painful pressure on her neck, like a lingering warning. As she looked up at Ramon, tears of resentment welled up in her eyes.
Putting her palm on the wall next to her for support, she staggered up to her feet and said in a hoarse voice, "You will regret this!"
There was nothing but pure loathing in her heart for this man, and as a result, she didn't have any positive feelings for the boy in the operating room, either.
But once she walked into the room, her professionalism kicked in, forcing her to keep her personal feelings aside. She didn't want to direct all her hatred towards an innocent child.
Taking a deep breath to calm herself down, she looked at the boy lying unconscious on the operating table. His little face was swollen and bloody from the impact, but it looked strangely familiar.
Of course, Ximena had no time to dwell on such things. The boy had several fractures which had to be treated immediately.
Three hours later, the operation was over.
The surgery was a success, and the medical staff were in high spirits, all except for Ximena.
Since the boy was Ramon's son, it was inappropriate to leave him covered in filthy bloodstains. The staff insisted on cleaning him up a little before wheeling him out of the operating room. It fell on Ximena to clean his face.
Ximena reluctantly picked up a damp cotton pad and wiped Neil's face. She didn't even realize that her teeth were clenched-that was how much she hated Ramon, and by extension, Neil. But while wiping off the bloodstains from the boy's face, she froze.
It was with trembling hands that she finished cleaning the rest of his pale face. Even after she was done, she was filled with numb disbelief. How could it be?
"Who is this boy?" Ximena asked breathlessly, grabbing the assistant beside her.
"This is Neil Mitchell, Ramon Mitchell's son, the heir of the Mitchell family," the assistant replied.
"Neil Mitchell... That's impossible!" Ximena's face turned deathly pale.
The boy on the operating table looked exactly like her son! How was it possible for two children to look so alike?
Her brother had clearly told her that she was pregnant with twins, Shawn Griffin and Alina Griffin, who were both being raised by her. And yet... How was it possible for a boy who looked just like her son to exist?
If they were not twins, how could they have such a striking resemblance to each other?
Ximena felt like she couldn't breathe. She only remembered that her first child was a boy, who had to be Shawn. But had she actually given birth to three babies?
Was the supposed heir of the Mitchell family actually her son? Had her brother lied to her?
But why?
Ximena looked down at the boy on the operating table. Although the bloodstains on his body were being wiped away by the staff, it was obvious that he was badly injured. Ximena couldn't bear to see him in such a condition.
Ramon hated her so much. If Neil was indeed her son, how could he be treated kindly by Ramon?
Ximena clenched the scalpel in her hand tightly, unable to contain the anger in her heart. She rushed out of the operating room with bloodshot eyes.
"Doctor, how is Neil?" Melanie cried as she ran up and blocked Ximena's path.
"Get out of my way," Ximena growled in a low voice.
Only then did Melanie notice the bloodstained scalpel. She screamed and instantly stepped back in fear.
Ximena's gaze fell on Ramon. It had only been four years since they last met, but he didn't seem to recognize her at all.
Well, it was no surprise. Two years of marriage hadn't been able to compare to a single word from Lyla. As long as Lyla wanted something, even if it was her child, Ramon would snatch it away from her without hesitation. And now, he was treating her son like this. The man was truly heartless!
But Ximena was a sharp woman. Glancing around, she noticed that they were surrounded by Ramon's bodyguards.
Suppressing her indignation, she said, "The surgery was successful, but the boy has a fever. If the fever subsides within 24 hours, he will be out of danger. Until then, he will be placed in the intensive care unit. No visitors allowed, not even close family members!"
Ximena asked a nurse to wheel Neil into the intensive care unit.
The director nodded approvingly at her. "Good work. With you here, I don't have to worry about anything."
"I'm a doctor. I'm just doing my job." With that curt response, Ximena turned around and left.
Ramon's dark eyes bore into Ximena's back as she walked away. For some reason, the way the oversized surgical gown fell on the doctor's figure reminded him of the woman in his memory...
Melanie followed his gaze and frowned. "Is there something wrong with this doctor?"
"Who is she?" Ramon asked, still not taking his eyes away from the receding figure.
Melanie shrugged. "The director said that he recruited her from abroad. Ramon, why are you staring at her like that? Are you interested in her? Have you forgotten about my sister?"
"That's enough." Ramon finally averted his gaze, and his face darkened.
Melanie zipped her mouth, feeling like a bucket of cold water had been poured over her.
"You better pray that Neil wakes up soon. Now get out of here!" Ramon growled.
Melanie instantly burst into tears. "Ramon, it's not my fault, I swear. You know Neil is a naughty boy. But I've only ever wanted the best for him. I have taken care of him wholeheartedly all these years, treating him well, hoping that he won't grow distant from Lyla. For her sake, I have given Neil all the love I could, treating him as my own son. I never wanted anything bad to happen to him."
"You can go now."
Without so much as glancing at her or acknowledging her speech, Ramon strode away.
Spotting a nurse along the way in the hospital corridor, he grabbed her arm and asked, "Where is the doctor's office?"
The nurse smiled politely. "Mr. Mitchell, are you looking for the doctor who performed the operation for your son?"
"Yes."
"Just go straight ahead. Her office is right around the corner."
Ramon let go of her and walked briskly towards the doctor's office, not even realizing how fast he was going.
