It was a sweltering hot summer day.
In a dim and dilapidated room in Olisburgh City, Kathryn Ramsey awoke from the pain.
Her whole body felt like it was burning. A thick, yellow liquid oozed out of the withering gauze, emitting a putrid stench.
Then the sound of high heels clicking briskly on the floor reached her ears.
She raised her head weakly to see Caylee Ramsay standing not too far away with clear triumph in her eyes.
"Kathryn. Edmund and I are getting married next month. I'm here today to let you know. After we're married, Edmund will be mine, and everything the Ramsey family has will rightfully belong to me!"
"Caylee Ramsey!"
Kathryn shouted her name in outrage. She clenched her teeth, her eyes filled with loathing. She wanted nothing more than to rush over and murder Caylee with her own hands right now!
Caylee was her cousin.
Caylee's father was an illegitimate offspring of the Ramsey family.
After his mother died, the Ramseys accepted him into their household regardless of his history with them.
Kathryn had always treated Caylee like her own sister ever since they were children.
She could have never predicted that Caylee would stab her in the back by hooking up with her husband, Edmund Lambert.
Three years ago, Caylee and Edmund plotted arson together and burnt the Ramsey family manor to the ground.
Kathryn, who had once been called the First Girl in Olisburgh, was marred by the fire, her face hideously branded by its flames. She had been in poor health since.
When she was at her lowest, Edmund was the one who saved her and gave her the courage and hope to live on.
Finally, at some point, the two of them decided to get married.
But it was all an elaborate trap!
Edmund had hooked up with Caylee from the beginning. The only reason he deceived and married Kathryn was to control the remaining shares she possessed!
In the end, the Ramsey Group was annexed, and her poor father died of a stroke.
They took everything!
But Caylee didn't kill Kathryn; she wanted to gloat about her victory. Instead, she imprisoned Kathryn in a decrepit hospital for three years!
"You must hate me, Kathryn. But I hate you more! You acted as if you were better than me for so many years and got everything you wanted. Well, I have some good news for you. I'm pregnant with boy-girl twins."
With a smug look on her face, Caylee added spitefully, "Was that not enough? Then here's another piece of news. After the fire three years ago, Edmund wasn't the one who donated blood to save you. It was Willard Ellsworth! You were in critical condition and urgently needed a blood transfusion. Only Willard's blood type matched yours. But he had a heart disease, didn't he? In order to give you his blood, he had to cancel his own surgery and missed the best opportunity to treat himself. He died from a heart failure! He's dead! Don't think he'll come to save you again!"
Willard's name suddenly sparked Kathryn's frayed nerves.
Her blood donor had actually been Willard.
Kathryn couldn't believe it.
"No... no way! You're lying! He can't... He can't be dead..."
Willard was Kathryn's first husband.
Due to premature birth, he was afflicted by heart disease. His personality was unsociable and domineering, and he could be moody at times. When she married him, they couldn't even get along with each other, let alone be happy.
Kathryn, who fell for Caylee's coaxing and manipulation, tried every way possible to divorce him.
In the end, she got what she wanted, and they went their separate ways. She didn't hear from him again after the divorce.
She treated him so heartlessly, yet he still risked his life to save her.
In the end, it was her fault he died.
If only she had seen through Caylee's facade earlier.
If she had learned to accept Willard earlier, her entire family wouldn't have been destroyed!
Her body ached. The burns from the fire flared up again in pain. But her heart hurt more. Regret, guilt, and extreme rage - all twisted together so fervently that all she could feel was despair.
She regretted everything so bitterly!
Seeing the desperation in Kathryn's eyes, Caylee sneered again.
"The reason why I've been keeping you here for so long is because I wanted you to see how happy Edmund and I are. Everything in the Ramsey family belongs to us now. There's no point in you anymore. I'll show you mercy now and send you to hell so you can finally reunite with Willard and your father!"
Caylee smirked, pulling an injection out of her pocket. The needle glinted menacingly, the poison she prepared brimming inside.
It would only take a few seconds for the poison to kill Kathryn!
Kathryn's eyes widened in horror. "No! I don't want to die..."
Caylee approached with a sneer, restraining the struggling Kathryn with one hand and holding the injection over her with another. Then, she stabbed the needle into Kathryn's neck!
"Ah-!" Kathryn let out a blood-curdling scream.
Caylee snarled in satisfaction.
"Go to hell, Kathryn!"
In her last moments, Kathryn stared at Caylee's face with wide eyes.
Then she felt the heat leave her body and her eyelids drooped closed.
I'm sorry, Willard. I owe you so much. I'm coming to pay you back!
It hurt. It was painful.
Kathryn's head felt like it was going to split open.
Her ears were ringing, but she could hear a faint voice. A woman was speaking.
"My cousin is the First Girl in the city, and she's still a virgin. Mr. Hudson, you should be gentle with her. Remember not to show your face in the photo later..."
"But what if Mr. Ellsworth finds out? Then we'll be dead meat!"
Kathryn bit her numb tongue, struggling to wake herself up.
Where was she?
Wasn't she dead? Why was she hearing someone talking?
Then all of a sudden, as Kathryn grasped at the tendrils of her memory, she felt her heart jolt in surprise.
She had a strange feeling of deja vu. She had been here, in this exact scene, before. It had already happened in her memory!
It was the third day after she and Willard got married.
It was Valentine's Day. Their first one together as a married couple.
In the spirit of the occasion, Willard asked her out for dinner.
She spent three hours dressing up carefully and arrived at the restaurant in the afternoon. She waited there for hours, but Willard didn't show up. It was not until ten o'clock in the evening that she found out that he was still in a meeting at the company.
Kathryn only married Willard because it was her father's wish. When he coldly ignored her the entire day, she rushed directly into his meeting room at the company and smashed a glass at him.
Then, egged on by Caylee, she drowned her sorrows at a bar and got drunk.
When she was completely wasted, the last thing she remembered was Caylee sending her to a hotel and pouring her a glass of water.
Then she blacked out.
At midnight, a stranger crept into her room and attempted to rape her.
Fortunately, she was heroically saved by Edmund, who came in just in time.
But not everything worked out in the end. She didn't expect multiple nude photos of her would be spread the next morning.
Kathryn's name made the headlines. The First Girl turned out to be a shameless slut!
With her reputation completely ruined, she was forced to drop out of school. Since then, her already distant relationship with Willard became even more strained.
But that had all already happened, which meant... she was reborn!
She was given a second chance. And it was on the night that her fate reached a turning point!
Kathryn practically leaped in joy. Her heart, which had once been in despair, felt hopeful and light.
Now she was reborn!
She absolutely must not repeat the same mistakes!
She had to rewrite her story, change everything, and make Caylee and Edmund pay the price for what they did to her and her family!
Steadfast in her newfound resolve, Kathryn mustered all the remaining strength in her body to unblock Willard's contact from her phone and dial his number.
The phone rang for a few seconds before it finally connected.
He didn't say anything on the other end of the line, but she could hear him breathing.
"Please, help me... Willard, I'm in the Muse Hotel..."
But before Kathryn could tell him the room number, her phone died.
She looked at the black screen in desperation. The knockout effects were taking control, and she could barely gather any strength in her body.
She struggled to get up. But, as a result, her phone slipped from her hand and clattered to the floor loudly.
"What was that? Is she awake?"
"Get in there now. I have to go."
Caylee left in a hurry.
Hearing the footsteps getting closer and closer, Kathryn bit her lower lip hard.
The pain sobered her up and helped clear her head. She stood up with great difficulty and staggered into the bathroom. She stumblingly locked the door behind her, her palms sweaty.
Phillip Hudson stalked in and realized she wasn't there. He tried the bathroom and, realizing it was locked, so he pounded on the door.
"Why are you hiding in there? Come out. I'll serve you tonight! I'll help you realize the happiness of being a woman!"
As he said, he began to kick at the door with force.
With her back against the shaking door, Kathryn was overcome with terror. He'd probably break the door down any second!
She frantically looked around the bathroom for something to help her. Then, her eyes caught sight of the narrow window.
Without a moment's hesitation, Kathryn climbed out of the window.
She was on the second floor. She wouldn't die...probably.
But Kathryn didn't have the time to think or be scared. It was now or never. Better to fall and be a cripple than submit herself to her fate!
Kathryn shut her eyes tightly, took a deep breath, and jumped off the building!
Phillip had kicked down the door and rushed into the bathroom. He ran to the window. He moved to give chase when he suddenly noticed a black Maybach speeding toward the hotel. It was Willard!
Phillip gave up on his pursuit and immediately hurried out of the hotel, dialing Caylee's phone number.
Kathryn fell from the window. The wind rushed in her ears as she quickly plunged to the ground. She turned so that her shoulder took the impact and rolled on the grass.
Suddenly, a loud screeching noise rang through the air.
The tires rubbed against the ground and screeched to a halt.
Kathryn was lying on the ground, panting hard. Her body was positioned awkwardly, but she could see a pair of shiny, black leather shoes appear in front of her.
She raised her head to see Willard gazing down at her.
He was tall, slender and straight, and dressed in a sharp suit. His face was handsome with angular features, and his hair fell over his eyebrows above a pair of deep, thoughtful eyes.
When his familiar face came into view, Kathryn's heart trembled. Somehow, simply seeing him formed a lump in her throat.
"Willard..."
Then, Kathryn fell unconscious.
Willard quickly bent down to hold her in his arms.
"Kathy! Are you okay?"
As her consciousness slipped away, Kathryn could feel Willard's arms holding onto her tightly.
His broad embrace made her feel safe again.
Slowly, her mind numbed, and she could hear Willard still calling her name anxiously.
He was clearly worried about her.
Kathryn wanted to kick herself. She was such a jerk!
How did she not see that Willard was so good to her?
Instead, she had ended up abandoning him for that prick, Edmund!
Caylee stood not too far away, hidden in the shadows. Her hard eyes were as venomous as snakes.
"Damn it! How did Kathryn escape so easily? It doesn't matter. Everything in the Ramsey family will be mine!"
***
It was the following morning when Kathryn finally awoke.
The soft sunlight filtered through the curtains as she gauged her surroundings. The luxurious bedroom and its elegant furnishings felt familiar yet strange to her.
She moved slightly and felt a small tug at the back of her hand. She looked at the needle and tube and realized she was hooked up to an IV drip.
Hearing her shift, Willard, who was sitting on the cushy leather sofa, looked up and closed the magazine in his hand. He asked, "Are you awake?"
Kathryn looked at him, her heart clenching.
She could finally see him again.
He was alive!
And he was by her side again, looking out for her while she was on infusion.
Why was she blind enough to abandon a good man like him for a complete hypocrite like Edmund?
Now that she was awake, Willard's expression stiffened, and he asked rigidly, "Don't you owe me an explanation for last night?"
An explanation?
"Kathryn, I didn't marry you for hitting the headlines from time to time."
Willard walked over to her on the bed and threw the magazine he was holding in front of Kathryn.
The magazine's cover depicted a photo of her dancing at the bar!
The background was vibrant and colorful. Among the glittering crowd, her silhouette was distinct, her body twisting wildly and alluringly.
The title declared, "Iriebury University's pure princess transformed. She partied at the bar at midnight, lonely and insatiable!"
The implication behind the title practically screamed her newfound notoriety.
But Kathryn gazed at the magazine calmly.
Her composure irritated Willard. He grabbed her chin between his fingers and forced her to look at him.
"You don't seem to care at all."
Or was this what she wanted? Did she want to leave him so badly, even at the cost of her own reputation?
There was a sharp pain in her jaw, but Kathryn didn't care. She pulled out the infusion needle to free herself and wrapped her arms around his waist tightly.
"I'm sorry, Willard. I'm so sorry."
Willard's hand froze in the air, and his body stiffened.
Kathryn's guilt was overwhelming her.
How cold was she to him that even a mere hug would shock him so much?
"I won't make a big fuss over nothing in the future. I'll live with you peacefully, okay? Don't be mad at me. I really am sorry."
But her apology only made Willard's frown deeper.
He abruptly pushed Kathryn away.
"Don't worry about it. I've already bought all the magazines. And I'll explain this to your dad for you. You can rest assured!"
Kathryn was rendered speechless.
Did he think she apologized because she was embarrassed by the magazines?
He was such an idiot!
If it were still her previous life, she would have been furious at Willard's reaction.
But she didn't know what to do now. She felt helpless.
The room froze for a moment.
With his left hand in his pocket, Willard looked at Kathryn.
"Get some rest. I have to go to the company."
After saying that, he strode out of the bedroom and shut the door behind him. Kathryn sat on the bed, feeling a little crestfallen about his cold attitude.
Why did Willard indifferently leave her behind in this condition?
But she didn't feel too discouraged. She placed her hand on her chest to feel the soft thump of her heartbeat again.
"Willard, I won't miss my chance with you in this lifetime. You can't escape from me!"
Just as Willard left, there was polite knocking on the bedroom door.
"Come in," called Kathryn.
The housekeeper of the Ellsworth family, Norah Deleon, entered with a box in her hands. She timidly approached Kathryn and handed her the box carefully.
"Miss Ramsey, this is a Valentine's Day gift Mr. Ellsworth prepared for you. He hopes you like it."
In reality, Kathryn and Willard's marriage was purely for commercial reasons.
The Ramsey family's capital chain was facing trouble, and they were in urgent need of a large investment.
The Ellsworth family was the leading family of the four wealthiest families in Olisburgh. They were well acquainted with the Ramsey family for generations. In the end, the two families finally agreed to unite their families through marriage.
Kathryn was only 20 years old, but she had no choice but to marry Willard for the sake of the Ramsey family.
Neither of the two was ready; they were young and unprepared to marry. Willard was reticent by nature which caused Kathryn to misunderstand him and get the impression he disliked her. What was more, Caylee only furthered this sentiment by speaking ill of him.
The colder Willard was toward Kathryn, the more Kathryn assumed he didn't care about her at all.
Therefore, at some point, she forbade the servants of the Ellsworth family from calling her "Mrs. Ellsworth." She did this on purpose to irritate Willard.
But, despite everything she did, Willard never blamed her from the beginning till the end. Instead, he quietly continued to clean up messes for her and tolerated her aggressions.
At this memory, when Kathryn laid eyes on the kind Norah again, her eyes welled up with tears.
"Norah, please call me Mrs. Ellsworth from now on. I have been too stubborn. As Willard's wife, it's inappropriate for you to call me Miss Ramsey."
Norah stared at her in astonishment. "Miss... Mrs. Ellsworth, you've thought this through?"
"If I have been rude to you before, Norah, please forgive me. I have been far too childish in the past."
"That's good, that's good. I'm so glad that you and Mr. Ellsworth are finally getting along with each other!"
Then Norah gently opened the black velvet box.
A delicate platinum bracelet inlaid with pearls was nestled on a velvety cushion. It glinted beautifully in the light.
Kathryn gaped at it in shock.
Some time ago, she fell in love with this bracelet at first sight but was unable to get it because she was told it was customized and not for sale.
She remembered being depressed for a long time because of it.
But now Willard was gifting her this bracelet.
It could only mean that Willard specially asked someone to customize this bracelet!
Seeing Kathryn's positive reaction, Norah smiled and offered, "Mrs. Ellsworth, let me help you try it on. The pearls are elegant, and they suit you."
"Okay. Thank you."
Kathryn nodded, a sweet smile on her face. Her heart felt happy and light.
Although Willard's attitude was abrasive, he actually prepared a Valentine's Day gift for her. Maybe he did have feelings for her after all.
