Chapter 1 Let's Divorce

Buzz...

The sound of the phone vibrating was particularly jarring in the quiet room. Patricia Sampson glanced at the phone in a daze and picked it up from the bedside table. When she saw the name on the caller ID, she pressed the answer button without a moment's hesitation.

She was afraid that the call would be cut if she didn't answer it right away.

"Hello." Her voice was shaky, betraying how anxious she felt.

Whenever she got a call from this number, she would feel inexplicably nervous. Now, although the other party could not see her, she could not help but comb her hair with her fingers.

"I am coming home today," said a deep male voice on the other end of the line.

Patricia's heart skipped a beat. After being stunned for a few seconds, she hurriedly asked, "Then do you need me to do anything? What do you want to eat? Should I prepare anything else for-"

"No," he interrupted her coldly, as if he was talking to a stranger and not his wife.

He was her husband, but since he had treated her like this from the beginning, she was used to his attitude towards her.

"Zac..." Placing her hand on her belly, Patricia bit her lower lip and decided to tell him the news. "I... I might..."

"I have to go now."

He abruptly hung up the phone.

Holding the phone in her hand, Patricia smiled bitterly and finished the sentence for her own ears. "I might be pregnant."

Patricia and Zac Reynolds had been married for three years. She lived with his family, while he lived alone in Oakleaf Villa. In the three years they had been married, the only time they had spent the night together was about more than a month ago, when he had suddenly come back to the house of the Reynolds family instead of his own villa. Patricia knew that he probably didn't remember what had happened that night.

Just when she had been starting to feel more and more redundant in this family, she had found out that she was pregnant.

However, she was hesitant to break the news to her husband, because she didn't know how he would react.

She shook her head and forced herself not to think about it. At the end of the day, she didn't care about how Zac treated her. After all, he had fulfilled her childhood wish, which was to marry him. That was all that mattered.

Patricia got out of bed and went downstairs to prepare breakfast. Although it was a little too early to prepare breakfast, she was afraid that her husband would come back early. If she didn't prepare breakfast this early, her husband might have to wait for it.

She was busy in the kitchen for more than two hours. She watched every member of the Reynolds family go out, but her husband still didn't arrive.

The whole day, she lingered downstairs, doing chores to keep herself occupied. When evening came, she was tidying up the dining table, looking at the door from time to time.

"Why do you keep looking at the door, Patricia? Is Zac coming home?" Tina Ridge, who was sitting in the living room and watching TV, glanced at her curiously.

"Yes."

Tina was displeased by her casual answer. "You are such an impolite woman! Don't you know how to address me? I know I'm not Zac's biological mother, but shouldn't you still address me with respect?"

Instead of responding, Patricia lowered her head and continued to clean up the table. In the three years after she had married into the Reynolds family, Tina was the person she had had to deal with the most. Over time, she had learned to stay silent whenever Tina found fault with her, because as long as she didn't speak, Tina would leave her alone after a while. But if she talked back, Tina's lecturing would be endless.

"I'm talking to you. Are you dumb?" Tina raised her voice as soon as she saw that Patricia was ignoring her.

"You have been married for three years, but Zac rarely comes back to this house. Why don't you reflect on yourself?" Tina approached Patricia, looking her up and down in disgust. "Good for nothing! Do you think Zac would have married you if he didn't want to take advantage of the Patricia family's power?"

Patricia clenched her fists to suppress her anger and continued to ignore Tina.

The servants in the room looked at Patricia with sympathy, but there was nothing they could do.

Seeing that Patricia remained silent, Ridge became even more domineering. "You are really good at pretending! You usually don't get up until noon. Are you pretending to be a good wife just because Zac is coming back today?"

Patricia frowned slightly at this, but she still didn't answer.

She hadn't told anyone about her pregnancy, because she wanted to tell this good news to her husband first. It was true that she felt very sleepy and got up late these days, but it was all probably due to her pregnancy.

"Humph! Sooner or later, Zac will kick you out! He is by no means a man you can control, and you are not a good woman. You two are a bad match."

After saying that, Tina covered her mouth and smiled with her eyes narrowed into slits.

At this moment, the servants in the living room bowed to someone and said, "Sir, you are back."

Hearing this, Tina's face suddenly changed.

She slowly turned her head to look at the door. When she saw Zac standing there, her face turned pale. Then, she quickly came to her senses and went upstairs.

After taking a look at Tina, who was nervously fleeing the scene, Patricia walked towards the man standing at the door.

"You're back. Are you tired? Do you want to eat something?" She walked over and voluntarily took off his coat, which was her duty as a wife. Although Zac seldom came home, Patricia would take good care of him whenever he did.

Zac stood at the door without moving. His face was expressionless, making it hard to tell whether he was happy or angry.

However, when Patricia helped him take off his coat, he didn't raise his arms. Although he had never liked her taking care of him, he wouldn't refuse her at least. But today, she could feel that the atmosphere was a little strange.

She raised her head slightly and looked at him, trying to guess what was going on in his mind. "How was your day? You must feel tired after a long day's work. You can take a shower first."

Zac still didn't answer, and he didn't even look at her.

After a long time, he finally took a step forward and said, "Come to the room. I have something to tell you."

Looking at her husband's back as he walked upstairs, Patricia felt even more nervous than usual. In fact, she had been feeling uneasy ever since she had received the phone call from him this morning. It was completely different from the nervousness that she usually experienced when she had been waiting for him and hoping to see him again.

After lingering downstairs for a long time, Patricia finally bit the bullet and went upstairs.

The door to their bedroom was open, and he was standing in front of the French window with his back to her.

He was tall, with features that looked like they had been sculpted. Such a perfect man was actually her husband! She often felt that it was unreal, but at the same time, she couldn't help feeling excited and proud.

"Zac, I've made dinner for you. Eat something first. These are all your favorite dishes." She walked in with a tray.

Hearing her voice, Zac turned around quickly and looked at her beautiful face. "There's something I've been thinking about for a long time. And today, I have finally made a decision."

Patricia deliberately avoided his deep black eyes and approached him with a smile. "Let's eat first."

There was a hint of embarrassment in her smile. She wanted to avoid what her husband was inevitably going to say.

He suddenly strode towards her. His steady steps were too hard, revealing a trace of anger.

Patricia put down the tray in a hurry and turned around to leave. "Have something to eat first. I'll get you a glass of water."

She tried to escape in a hurry, but he didn't give her the chance. "Let's get a divorce."

All of a sudden, Patricia felt as if time and space were frozen around her. With her back to Zac, she didn't move at all.

She stood there in a daze for a few seconds, and then walked out quickly, pretending as if she hadn't heard him. "I'm going downstairs to get something."

Chapter 2 Severance Pay

As soon as Patricia started to speak, she realized that she was not able to hide her emotions well. Her voice trembled as she stumbled out of the room.

"The divorce agreement has been prepared. I will give you everything I should give you as compensation for the past three years." Before she could leave, Zac put the divorce agreement on the table in front of him.

Patricia wanted to flee downstairs, but her feet seemed to be rooted to the spot.

She knew that whether she pretended not to hear him or accepted it obediently, he would still divorce her. He had always been like this. As long as he made up his mind to do something, he would definitely do it.

Three years ago, he suddenly came to the Sampson family and firmly asked for her hand in marriage. She had been overjoyed, thinking that the man she had secretly loved for years returned her feelings and wanted to marry her. But on the night of their wedding, she had found out that he had married her solely to take advantage of the power of the Sampson family so that he could quickly climb to the top in Flando.

However, even after learning the real reason he had married her, she had never regretted it. She was willing to marry him and be the stepping stone of his career. Back then, she had wondered if he would divorce her once he had achieved his goal. She had comforted herself by thinking that he might fall in love with her by then, but to her dismay, he had never even given her a chance. Although she had braced herself for the prospect of divorce, she hadn't expected him to bring it up this early.

With her back to him, Patricia was lost in thought. After a long while, she stammered, "Can... Can you think about it again?"

"I've made up my mind. Just sign it," Zac replied impatiently. "I will give you ten million dollars as severance pay, as well as a new house worth six million dollars in Eastern District."

Severance pay?

Patricia couldn't believe her ears.

She finally turned around and raised her head to meet the eyes of her husband, who was much taller than her. "Severance pay?" she echoed incredulously.

Did they have an employer-employee relationship? How could he call it severance pay? It was ruthless of him to use these two words.

"I already told you the reason why I married you on our wedding day. This isn't a real marriage. It's much more appropriate to say that we have an employer-employee relationship. So, I'll pay you your employee remuneration for the past three years. After that, we're done." The tall and handsome man in front of her looked straight at her with complete apathy. His deep black eyes were devoid of emotion.

"Employee remuneration?" Patricia murmured to herself. "You're right. We just have employer-employee relationship."

She smiled bitterly, but Zac didn't respond at all.

She walked to him step by step, sat down on the sofa, picked up the agreement, and carefully read it.

Seeing that she was reading the divorce agreement without protest, Zac finally relaxed and sat down opposite her. "The agreement is very clear. If you want anything else, you can tell me. I'll give it to you."

The relief on his face after she agreed with him didn't go unnoticed by Patricia, and the self-mocking smile on her lips deepened.

Without saying anything else, she crossed off the part of the agreement that involved handing over assets, and signed her name quickly.

"You don't have to pay the severance fee. We are officially divorced." She politely pushed the agreement in front of him.

Taking a glance at the part of the agreement that had been crossed off, Zac raised his eyebrows slightly. Of all the ways that he had imagined this scenario to play out, Patricia refusing the assets wasn't one of them.

"Are you sure?" His eyes were filled with disbelief as he looked at Patricia, who was already rising to her feet.

Patricia turned around and walked to the closet as she replied, "The Sampson family is not short of money. Since I married you willingly three years ago, I won't accept the severance pay."

After all, if she accepted it, it would be akin to admitting that they had only had an employer-employee relationship for the past three years.

She would rather give up all the material things in the world if it meant that she could hold onto the idea that they had been husband and wife for three years.

Sitting on the sofa, Zac watched her pack up her things without saying anything.

Patricia neatly folded up all the clothes in the closet and put them into her suitcase, along with the rest of her sparse belongings in the room.

She was packing up very slowly on purpose because she wanted to stay here a little longer. She had lived alone in this room for almost three years. In the beginning, she had felt uneasy being by herself, but over the years, she had grown to like it. Now, she was reluctant to leave. But no matter how slowly she packed up, she had no choice but to leave.

When she was finally done, she stood up with her suitcase and turned around to leave without saying anything or even looking at him.

"Let me drive you home." Zac, who had been waiting patiently for her to pack up, suddenly spoke.

"No, thanks. I still have money to take a taxi home," Patricia said sarcastically on purpose. Every time she felt scared, she would choose to protect herself by acting aggressively, but she would also hurt herself in the process. This time was no different.

With her suitcase in hand, she went downstairs. The suitcase was so big that it was difficult for her to lift it by herself, but she refused to ask anyone for help. The noise of her walking down the stairs attracted the attention of everyone else in the house.

"Patricia, where are you going? It's very late now." Johnny Reynolds asked, leaning over the staircase in his pajamas.

Raising her head to look at Zac's father, Patricia smiled and said, "Uncle Johnny, please go back to sleep. It's getting late."

"Patricia, what's wrong with you? Where are you going?" Hearing her address him as "Uncle Johnny," Johnny was shocked. He rushed downstairs, but was stopped by Tina.

Patricia continued to carry her luggage downstairs without answering him.

Three years ago, when she had newly married into the Reynolds family, she had practiced many times before she had mustered up the courage to call him "Dad." Out of all the members of the Reynolds family, she had the best relationship with Zac's father, Johnny. Naturally, she would miss him the most.

With much difficulty, Patricia finally left the house with her luggage under the confused gaze of the servants.

Zac, who was still sitting in the room upstairs, heard their conversation clearly, but he remained expressionless.

The room had always been somewhat bare, but now that Patricia had taken away her things, it looked even more empty. Looking at the huge room, Zac inexplicably felt annoyed.

For a long time, he had hesitated to bring up the topic of divorce, because he had thought that she would keep bothering him and beg him not to divorce her. But to his surprise, she had accepted it without any resistance. For some reason, though, her ready acceptance made him feel lost and uneasy. He didn't know what to do.

In the past three years, he had stayed in this room for no more than five nights. He had never had sex with Patricia, and they had seldom met each other. So why didn't he feel relaxed now? Instead, he couldn't help but think of their wedding night, when they had to sleep on the same bed. He kept recalling all those times that Patricia had rushed to his residence in Oakleaf Villa to personally tidy up his room after work.

The more Zac thought about these memories, the more irritated he felt. However, he couldn't stop it. Patricia's face kept flashing through his mind.

In a fit of frustration, he stood up and kicked the round wooden table, but the palpitation in his heart did not dissipate.

It was already midnight when Patricia arrived at the Sampson family's house. All the members of the Sampson family were fast asleep.

Chapter 3 Came Back With Nothing

When she finally got home, she gently dragged her luggage up the stairs, but there were too many stairs, and she was already exhausted. In the end, she just threw the suitcase aside and went upstairs alone.

After returning to her room, her composure deflated like a balloon. She felt completely powerless.

She tossed and turned on the bed for a long time, unable to fall asleep. All the memories of her three years at the Reynolds family's house constantly flashed through her mind, followed by memories of Zac.

When she was a child, she had been pushed into a pool. If Zac hadn't reached out his hand to save her then, she wouldn't have fallen in love with him and readily married him when he proposed. Then, things wouldn't have ended up this way.

But what was the point thinking about an "if"? What had happened had already happened. What was worse, she was pregnant now.

When she remembered the child in her womb, Patricia felt helpless, and a self-mocking smile appeared on her face.

She knew that if she had used the child as a bargaining chip to ask Zac to stay with her, he would have immediately dragged her to the hospital to have an abortion.

She was not stupid enough to think that a man who had no feelings for her would continue to live with her just because of her unborn child.

An ambitious man like Zac would never do that. Besides, she didn't want to stoop low enough to try and bind him to her with a child. That kind of life would be too miserable.

With all these thoughts running through her head, Patricia didn't fall asleep until daybreak.

Not even half an hour later, her door opened with a bang, and a rough male voice rang in her ear.

"Why did you come back? Why did you bring so much luggage?"

Patricia was so sleepy that she didn't want to get up at all. With her eyes still closed, she lazily answered, "Zac and I have decided to get a divorce."

After being stunned for a few seconds, Sullivan Sampson flew into a rage. "What do you mean? Why did you get a divorce? Get up and make it clear!"

The quilt on Patricia's body was pulled off and thrown to the ground by Sullivan. Feeling the coldness hit her, Patricia finally opened her eyes and saw the figure looming in front of her.

"Get up! I'll wait for you downstairs. Come down right now!" Without waiting for Patricia's response, Sullivan stormed off, cursing continuously as he walked.

Patricia sighed. She had already expected this to happen.

She got up from the bed, put on a thin coat, and went downstairs.

Her father, Sullivan, her stepmother, Yolanda Riley, and her half-sister, Lyndsy Sampson, were all present.

Even before she arrived in front of them, Sullivan roared, "Tell me, what on earth happened between you and Zac? Who asked for divorce first?"

Patricia just lowered her head to focus on the stairs, which seemed to be swimming before her eyes. Before she could say anything, Yolanda, who was sitting beside her father, said, "Yes, there didn't seem to be any problems between them. How could they get divorced so suddenly? It's a little suspicious."

What Yolanda said made Sullivan think about it. After a long time, he asked, "Zac is the one who asked for a divorce, right?" He remembered that three years ago, when Zac had come to him to ask for Patricia's hand in marriage, Patricia had been over the moon. Her love for Zac had been obvious, so it didn't make sense for her to ask for a divorce.

Patricia walked up to her father and looked at him. "It doesn't matter who filed for divorce. The fact is, we are divorced now."

Looking at her father, she was a little disappointed. She was already feeling depressed. Why couldn't her father try to comfort her instead of probing her for the reason for the divorce? Was it really that important? It didn't matter at all to her.

Sullivan let out a sigh and shook his head. But suddenly, he thought of something and asked her in a hurry, "What about the assets? How did you divide it? Zac's career has really flourished in these three years. I think his wealth is now several times that of our Sampson family!"

As he spoke of Zac's achievements over the past three years, Sullivan narrowed his eyes shrewdly. It seemed that he hadn't misjudged Zac at all. When Zac had expressed his desire to marry Patricia, Sullivan had thought that he would achieve great things in the future. Of course, Zac had turned out to be far more capable than he had imagined. In just three years, he had not only gained a firm foothold in Flando, but he had also grown the Reynolds Group to become the largest conglomerate here. He had also set up branch companies overseas.

Patricia lowered her head and didn't answer. Her vigor suddenly disappeared.

Yolanda and Lyndsy exchanged glances with each other and smiled scornfully. "Patricia, did you give up all your assets and come back with nothing?" Lyndsy asked.

When Sullivan heard these words, he was shocked. He looked at Patricia coldly and asked, "Is that true?"

"Yes." Without any hesitation, Patricia looked at her father and nodded.

For a few seconds, Sullivan glanced at her expressionlessly. Then, when the words had finally sunk in, he flew into a rage. "You such an unfilial daughter! How could you give up all your assets?"

He shot up from the sofa and rushed over to Patricia. "Did you do anything wrong to the Reynolds family? Otherwise, why did you give up all your assets?"

"He offered me the money, but I didn't want it," Patricia answered firmly, looking straight into her father's eyes without fear.

She wasn't close to anyone in the Sampson family at all. Moreover, she was used to being the object of her father's disappointment. Everyone in this family had always belittled and despised her.

Sullivan was so angry that he wanted to reach out to slap his daughter, but he finally suppressed his anger and straightened up. "How much did he offer you?"

She didn't want to waste any more time on this conversation, so she gave him an honest answer. "Sixteen million dollars."

When Sullivan heard this, his fury soared, but he withdrew his raised palm and took a few steps back. Then, he slumped back on the sofa as if all his strength had left him. "Sixteen million dollars? Does he think of you as a beggar on the street?"

Seeing Sullivan's attitude, Yolanda chimed in to stir the pot further. "The Reynolds Group is now worth 78 billion dollars. Although that's the collective wealth of the Reynolds family, Zac must have at least a billion dollars in his hands. He earned all that money after marrying Patricia. It has to be divided equally between them after getting a divorce! Sixteen million dollars is indeed... "

Yolanda trailed off hesitantly. However, anyone and everyone knew what she wanted to say.

Lyndsy sat there in silence, calculating for a long time in her head before tugging on Yolanda's arm. "Mom, is Zac really that rich now?"

Three years ago, Zac had just come back to Flando from abroad. Back then, his small company had been worth only three million dollars. But in just three years, there had been a terrifying surge in that number.

Yolanda didn't care about her daughter's question. She glanced at Sullivan and Patricia and continued, "But since they have already gotten a divorce and Patricia is the one who refused the money, there is nothing else to say..."

"No way! My daughter has toiling like a servant for the Reynolds family for three years, but he dares to divorce her without even giving her a penny? He must be dreaming if he thinks he can get away with this! Even if he hires a maid and then fires her, he has to pay the severance fee!"

Sullivan's words stabbed into Patricia's heart like a knife. It seemed that the decisions of the people around her, whether it was Zac or her father, were all made just to get profit off of her.

She was just a pawn in their games.

Even though she had already known this, she wasn't that hurt by Zac's actions. But how could her own father treat her like this?
