The setting sun shone on the wedding photos on the wall. Exactly three years had passed since then, and the warm, hopeful sunlight brought upon a sense of irony.
Sophia Lin glanced at her phone angrily. It was already half past seven. Although Ryan Fu didn't come home frequently, how could he forget about their wedding anniversary?
Time passed by like blur. She sat on the sofa alone and waited until half past one in the morning.
She called to his company, but no one answered.
Unable to bear her anger, Sophia Lin changed her clothes and took her car keys. She drove quickly to the company where Ryan Fu worked, her foot pressing hard on the gas pedal.
After parking the car, she walked inside and into the elevator. Ryan Fu's office was on the thirteenth floor.
With a faint 'ding', the elevator doors opened. It was dark inside. Since it was nighttime and everyone had gone home from work, it looked like the office came straight out of a horror movie. Sophia Lin leaned against the wall. Slowly, she slid down to the floor, her eyes wet with tears.
They were once the most envied model couple. However, they had been married for three years and Ryan Fu had never laid a single finger on her.
Sophia Lin had been treated with great respect in the marriage. But whenever she wanted to be a little intimate with Ryan Fu, he would back away from her as if he was so disgusted by her. It didn't make sense -- they were each other's first love! She didn't even know what she had done wrong.
In order to make their relationship better, Sophia Lin changed herself a lot. She got rid of all her irrational and wasteful habits. She didn't even buy any new clothes in the past three years. What was more, she learned to cook many kinds of dishes to win Ryan Fu's favor every day, and took care of all the housework. In the end, all her efforts were in vain.
More often than not, Sophia Lin felt too exhausted because of how hard she tried to please Ryan every day.
After calming herself down, she stood up and groped the walls, trying to walk forward in the darkness. She got back inside the elevator and went back down the building. Despair gradually overwhelmed her.
In truth, she had expected that something like this would happen. Still, it was such a painful thing for her to experience.
Feeling dazed and hopeless, she walked towards the entrance of the underground parking lot tiredly. All of a sudden, a crimson Porsche Cayenne in the corner came into her view. There was no chance that she could've seen it that easily -- it was probably just her woman's intuition.
For some reason, she was sure that Ryan Fu was in the car.
She walked carefully towards the back of the car. It was not until she got closer that she realized that the car had been subtly rocking back and forth.
It didn't take a genius to know what was going inside that car. She clenched her right hand into a fist, her nails digging deep into her palm. Blood soon started to trickle down slowly to her finger.
The woman's camisole was hanging down to her waist. They even boldly rolled down the window, and her underwear hung shamelessly on the edge.
Although Sophia had been standing in front of the car for a long time, the couple in the car did not notice anything.
Just as she tried to kick the side of the car to stop them, her body was pulled back with a pair of strong arms.
Sophia turned around instantly and looked into a pair of deep eyes. Although she tried her best to resist, she was too weak to fight against the strength of the man behind her.
A large hand went up to her mouth to prevent her from screaming. Just like that, Sophia was dragged directly into the black car next to her. Even when she fought with all her strength, it was useless. The door was half closed. The more she struggled, the more interested the man became.
The man's eyes were wide with excitement. It was not hard to imagine that he might had been under the influence of drugs.
Sophia was so angry that her face turned red. She tightly grasped one of the man's arms and twisted it. A suffocating pain came and the man screamed.
At this moment, the door was opened from outside. In an arrogant and aloof posture, Ryan folded his arms on his chest and watched the fun in front of him.
"What are you doing here? Did you really have to find a man to cheat on me with in my own company? I'd like to see who this boy toy is." As he spoke, Ryan reached out and pulled Sophia out of the car, trying to see who the man was.
Sophia's eyes turned red, crying in her heart, 'How could he think that? He didn't even ask me what happened! Did he think that I was willing to get attacked?'
She paused, tidied up her clothes and pretended to be calm. "Yes! Because it's so much funny. Can't you see?"
Her scornful tone irritated the man in front of her. Meanwhile, she quickly glanced at the woman in Ryan's car. It looked like she was quickly tidying up her clothes -- only her back could be seen as her face was hidden under the shadows.
Infuriated by Sophia's words, Ryan raised his hand and slapped her on the face.
"You slut! I knew it was a bad decision to agree to marry you!"
In this moment, Sophia realized that she couldn't show any cowardice in front of this love rat! The anger that she had endured for over three years instantly erupted. Sophia grabbed a mug she saw in the car and smashed it at his forehead.
"Don't forget your place, Mr. Ryan. I was the one who agreed to marry you! Without me, where will you have gotten the luxury car and mansion to find fancy women? Maybe I should've just gotten a dog. At least it would be good for something like guarding the door. You, on the other hand, are pathetic!"
Meanwhile, the man who had attacked her leaned against the car as he looked at Sophia bemusedly.
Sophia stared at Ryan, who was holding his head and groaning in pain. "Can't you see how shameless you really are? You are nothing without me. I can break you into pieces if I wanted to, you scum!"
Shocked by her tone, the man behind her showed a sly smile. 'Well, this is a little interesting.'
For a long time, Ryan didn't dare to stand up, probably because he didn't expect that Sophia would be so explosive.
"I'm not a boy toy, by the way. My name is Andrew Li."
Sophia looked back at him in astonishment. Walking over, he pulled his tie and tidied up his clothes. It was obvious that given the current situation, he hadn't have time to explain the inexplicable things that had just happened.
With his eyes widening, Ryan stared at the black car in front of him. It was a limited Porsche. A look of shock and fear appeared on his face.
"Mr. Andrew? Are... are you really Andrew?" Ryan was so nervous that he couldn't help but tremble and stammer.
But on second thought, it was obvious that Andrew Li was caught trying to harass Sophia, so Ryan stood up and squared his shoulders.
"But Sophia is my legal wife. I'm afraid what you've done to her is not appropriate, Mr. Andrew."
Hearing this, Sophia was dumbfounded at how Ryan was suddenly acting. Meanwhile, Andrew Li walked closer to Sophia and held her chin with his hand. "So what? From now on, she is my woman," he said in a contemptuous tone.
Obviously, Ryan was embarrassed that he was cuckolded and provoked in public, but soon he managed to put on a dry smile.
"Honey, let's talk about it when we get home. We shouldn't be bothering Mr. Andrew like this. It's so embarrassing. Let's go." Ryan looked at Sophia viciously.
However, much to his surprise, Sophia just scoffed at him. "Who's this 'honey' you're referring to? You easily call me that without thinking about the bitch in your car. I'm sorry. You must have mistaken me for someone else."
Ryan tried to pull her back, but was pushed away by Andrew Li. "Don't make me have to say it twice," he said coldly.
It was probably the first time that Sophia had felt a firm sense of being protected.
Before Ryan could react, Sophia had opened the door and got into Andrew's Porsche.
Stunned, Andrew smirked and walked over to the driver's seat, closing the door.
The car soon drove out of the underground parking lot. Sophia stared anxiously at Andrew.
"Your name is Andrew Li, right? Thanks for getting me out of there despite the fact that... you know... You were attacking me before." Her voice was very small, almost like a whisper.
Andrew's angular face was incredibly handsome, like he was personally chiseled by the hands of God. The man suddenly stepped on the brake and turned his head. His sharp, falcon-like eyes were fixed on Sophia, which made her blush instantly.
Seeing the way he was looking at her, she couldn't help but move away from him. "What... what are you planning to do?"
Andrew was not annoyed by her reaction. On the contrary, he was very much interested in the winded woman in front of him.
When he drove off, he thought that Sophia would suddenly burst into tears or she would hysterically roar at the hardships she had suffered for many years.
To his pleasant surprise, she was a lot more strong-willed than she appeared to be.
With an arrogant and evil smile, he put his arm behind her seat. "Where are we going, Miss? Your place or mine? Or maybe you'd like to get a hotel room?"
"How dare you! Who the hell do you think you are? Look, thanks for what you did just now but I've got to go now. Bye!" As Sophia spoke, she reached out to open the door, but found that the door had been locked. A kind of inexplicable fear surged up in her heart. 'Stupid! Stupid! Why did I get into this man's car!' she cursed in her heart.
Suddenly, the man stepped on the gas and drove at a high speed on the street, as if declaring his sovereignty.
He looked back at the front passenger seat. It was interesting for him to see the fear and trepidation on her face.
"Miss, do you think a normal man would be interested in a woman like you? Plus, do you honestly believe that you and your pathetic husband won't get into a fight if you go home now?"
Hearing that, Sophia breathed a heavy sigh. A few seconds later, she furrowed her brows. 'Wait! What does he mean that a normal man would not be interested in a woman like me?' ?
"Do you think I'll lose if I get into a fight with him? Besides, I'm the daughter of the Lin Group! If I get a divorce with him, that scumbag will have no choice but to leave without getting a single penny from me!" She sounded so arrogant, but it was understandable since the Lin family was one of the biggest names in the whole city.
Hearing the two words "Lin Group", Andrew frowned. The Lin Group had declined, and the company's project had a great deficit up to ten million. It was said that the bank loan for their latest project hadn't been approved yet.
Could it be the Lin Group she was referring to?
Looking back, he found that although the little woman had an arrogant air to her tone, she looked very simple and quaint. Although there was not an ounce of makeup on her face, her skin was smooth and flawless. However, her cheeks were a little bit too sullen. No matter how weak her body looked, it was difficult to hide the beauty of the woman. With a careful observation, one could still see that she was beautiful.
She didn't have a sweet life after marriage. Even though she was the daughter of a rich family, she looked like she was having so many hardships -- another silly woman who was obsessed with the wrong man.
Andrew swiped the screen of his mobile phone and threw it directly to Sophia. "This is the recent situation of the Lin Group's stock market."
Even though Sophia didn't know much about stocks, she scanned the screen and found that the stock was steadily going downhill day by day. Her bright eyes were as wide as bells.
How could it be possible that such things happened to the Lin Group? Then what about Ryan company? No way!
Her mind was in a mess. Grasping Andrew's sleeve tightly, she begged, "Please. Please take me home first! I must go home! This must be that bastard's doing!"
Her panicked look was somewhat cute in Andrew's eyes. He had never thought that a seemingly innocent little woman would have so much fire in her. At a glance, she could see that it was a trick played by her 'loving' husband.
"Go back now? Do you want to humiliate yourself?" Andrew snorted indifferently.
In a panic, she took a few deep breaths and finally relaxed her tense mood.
She couldn't go back now. She had to think of a solution. Looking at the man beside her, she pressed her lips into a fine line. "Can you take me in for one night? I'll even pay for my stay, no matter how much it is. When I get home tomorrow, I can get you the money."
Andrew didn't say a word. He drove the car quickly to a manor villa community. Soon, he pulled over at a villa nestled at the innermost part.
"Is this your home?" Looking around, Sophia guessed that the house prices here should be several times higher than hers. The tall palm trees around the area offered a refreshing vibe. Gingerly, she stepped into the villa with Andrew.
Looking around, it seemed like they were the only ones who were there.
She had many questions in her heart, but Sophia didn't dare to ask anything.
She strolled around the villa. It was so grand and beautiful. Luxurious decorations could be seen at every turn.
Aside from the decorations, everything else was either black or white.
At first glance, she thought that she had walked into a hotel by mistake.
Then, she heard the door behind her creak. Looking back, she saw that Andrew was about to walk out, with his car keys in his hand. "You're going out?" she asked.
He turned around and glanced at her. "If I find anything out of place when I come back tomorrow..."
he ordered, not bothering to finish saying his threat.
Without waiting for her reply, Andrew closed the door behind him. Sophia tapped her foot impatiently. 'Great! Was he planning to starve me to death all along?'
Sighing, she made her way into the kitchen. When she opened the fridge, her eyes widened in surprise. There were all kinds of delicious dishes, but the thing that caught her attention was a roast lamb leg! It was a personal favorite of hers before she got married to Ryan.
She grabbed the lamb leg and put it on the chopping board. Then she took the knife and gently sliced a small piece of it. It was so tender that it almost melted in her mouth. She could taste that this was cooked with authentic truffles, leaving a distinct earthy taste in her mouth that made her close her eyes in pleasure.
Looking around, she saw a bottle of red wine -- 1992 Lafite. With a small smile, she opened the bottle and poured herself a glass.
At this moment, she figured the best thing she could do was numb down her nerves with some alcohol. Quietly, she ate the small meal she had prepared for herself. It was a rather surprisingly pleasant night. However, she couldn't help but have tears well up in her eyes.
How could it be? How did everything become like this? Looking out of the window at the rising sun, Sophia couldn't see any hope in her future. Her mother had always been very harsh to her, and had never been nice to Ryan. Now her marriage had become a mess. How could she explain herself to the Lin family?
If she had known it earlier, she might as well have gone into business.
With the help of alcohol, Sophia soon curled up on the sofa and easily dozed off to sleep.
The next morning, she awoke with bright lights shining on her.
She was having a dream about being taken to the hospital, and could distinctly remember the pungent smell of disinfectant wafting into her nose.
Slowly, she opened her eyes, and was overwhelmed with how white everything was. 'Wait... Am I still dreaming? Am I actually in a hospital?'
She was shocked by this thought. When she came to her senses, she noticed that she was lying down on a rather uncomfortable bed.
An IV was hooked up to her right hand. There was a man sitting on a chair at her bedside. He was wearing a light-gray suit and British leather shoes. As she looked up at the man's handsome profile, she saw that his face was full of fatigue.
"Why am I here?" Sophia rubbed her head, trying to recall what had happened last night.
"Alcohol poisoning," Andrew said indifferently with a shrug.
For some reason, from the moment she woke up, Sophia felt that everything around her was out of place. She even felt that there was a bit of pity in the eyes of Andrew when he looked at her.
She sat up slowly and looked for her cell phone in the bedside table.
"You'd better have a good rest first. You can deal with the things after you get out of here." Andrew pushed the drawer hard and closed it.
Sophia was about to curse the man in front of her. However, the door to her ward suddenly opened.
The familiar face of Linda Lin came into sight. Sophia was surprised, but when Linda Lin opened her mouth, Sophia was almost on the verge of collapse.
"What a shameless bitch! You have the audacity to think about divorcing Ryan while you are lovey-dovey with another man in the hospital?! As the Miss Sophia of the Lin family, how could you be so shameless? With your father gone, you can be sure that you are no longer a part of this family! You'd better sign the divorce agreement as soon as you can!" As Linda Lin spoke, she threw the folder in her hand to Sophia.
Her words made Sophia confused. What did Linda Lin mean by saying that her father was gone?
It was like Sophia didn't hear anything else. Linda Lin's words seemed to have made everything come to a sudden halt.
Sophia pulled off the bandage on her right hand, threw the transfusion bottle aside and grabbed the collar of Linda's shirt. "What did you mean by saying that my father was gone?" she screamed.
Linda trembled with fear. Perhaps it was the first time that Linda had seen Sophia lose her temper like this.
With her teeth clenched, Linda tried to push away Sophia's hands and took a stiff step back.
"My dear cousin... Did you really not know? Uncle Lin was embezzling the funds, making the company's accounts get buried in debt of tens of millions. Yesterday, all the members of the board of directors went to your house to confront him about it. The police were even there to try and arrest him. It was hard for him to accept it, I guess, so he jumped down from the fifth floor of the Lin mansion. Such a shame. Did you really not know any of this?" Linda smiled sarcastically.
It was like something was pressing against Sophia's chest, making it hard for her to breathe. How could this be possible?
Her whole had gone weak and limp. Meanwhile, Andrew just watched silently and was at a loss for what to do. After all, it was someone else's family matters. As he stayed by the sidelines, he couldn't help but guess how devastating all of this must be for Sophia.
Although her face was a mask of shock and pain, Sophia couldn't shed a single tear, probably because she had already cried too much last night.
Hatred filled Sophia's heart as she glared at Linda with blood-red eyes, like an angry and provoked lioness.
"Why are you the one asking me to sigh the divorce papers? Where is Ryan? Why didn't he come here himself? Does he not have the guts to come see me?" Sophia sneered, each word coming out of her mouth filled with acidity.
Linda smiled frivolously. "My cousin, are you pretending to be dumb or are you really just stupid? Didn't you run into me and Ry in the car that day? Besides, it's useless even if you don't want to divorce. Now I'm pregnant with his child, and his mother knows about it. By the way, she said if you didn't clean up your rubbish today, she would throw it away for you. Such rotten luck, huh?"
Rotten luck?
When Sophia heard these two words, she burst into laughter.
"Linda, what kind of person do you think Ryan is? Rotten luck, you say? When I married that fool, I brought in three million dollars as my dowry. That was my money. How else do you think Ryan was able to drive a Porsche and wear branded clothes? He was nothing before he married me, and only lived on his annual two thousand dollars scholarship. Marrying him is the unluckiest thing that has ever happened to me!"
Even though her face was pale and she was wearing nothing but a hospital gown, Sophia was still full of life and vigor as she clapped back at Linda.
Perhaps it was because the hysteria of Sophia was so pitiful that Andrew couldn't help but stand up from the chair and walked straightly to her. He held her slender waist, took out a platinum pen from his pocket, and casually signed Sophia's name on the divorce agreement.
"Although you refused me before, I didn't agree to it," he said with a sly smile. Andrew's words confused Sophia.
She turned him down? How was that possible?
All of a sudden, Sophia remembered back when she had just turned 20. Her mother said that Uncle Li's son who had been studying abroad had come back to visit his family, and she wanted them to have a blind date. Could it be that this was Uncle Li's son? Andrew Li?
Was it him? She stared at the man with tearful eyes.
The smile on Linda's face gradually became strained. She waved the divorce agreement in her hand and rolled her eyes. "Great! I'll be leaving now. I wish you two a happy marriage!"
The smile on her face was dazzling and mocking. Sophia tried hard to hold back her anger. With a bitter smile, she sneered at Linda. "I have high hopes for you and Ryan! I wish you two never have children no matter how hard you two try! Such a waste of space if you ask me."
Linda took the divorce agreement and walked out of the ward quickly in sheer exasperation, her hands clenching into fists.
'Sophia, I will get what you had back then. Everything you have will be mine. Let's wait and see!'
When Linda had left, Sophia walked away, took her handbag, and went to the bathroom. Luckily, she always kept her makeup in her bag even if she didn't use it. After freshening up, she carefully fixed herself up.
It wouldn't be a surprise if there were a lot of reporters gathered outside.
Just as she was about to put on her coat, Andrew took out his iPad and handed it to her. "Sign this contract. You need help, and, truthfully speaking, I'm the only one who can help you avenge yourself and your father."
Contract?
Sophia quickly skimmed through the contract. 'What is this? A contract to be married for three years?
There are over a hundred rules and guidelines written here!'
She shook her head and smiled, "Mr. Andrew, I don't need pity from anyone, especially from you."
