For seven years, I endured agonizing egg retrieval surgeries just to give my Alpha mate, Kael, a strong heir.
But one day, he coldly announced he had impregnated a high-ranking Beta female instead.
He told me I would raise her pup as my own to satisfy the pack Elders.
When the pregnant Beta faked a fall at the pack banquet, Kael slapped me to the ground in front of everyone to protect his authority.
Desperate to escape his suffocating control, I caused a car crash and ended up in the pack hospital.
That was when I overheard the High Healer confronting him.
The "fertility vitamins" Kael had personally fed me every single night for the past seven years were actually Wolfsbane.
He had been intentionally destroying my ability to bear pups all along.
I stared at the mate who had wiped my tears when I cried on the bathroom floor over every negative pregnancy test.
He had held my hand through every agonizing surgery, watching me bleed and beg the Moon Goddess for a child, all while secretly feeding me poison.
"I did it to protect our pups from the pack's cruelty!" Kael sobbed on his knees, begging for my understanding.
But my heart was already dead.
I forced our Mind-link wide open, stared into his terrified eyes, and spoke the sacred words of Rejection.
This time, I chose to sever our soul bond, take my freedom, and let him rot.
Chapter 1
Elara POV
The sterile glare of the pack hospital's fluorescent tubes was a physical weight on my eyelids. A raw, chemical smell of bleach scoured the inside of my nose, erasing the familiar, earthy scents of the wolves around me.
I lay on the cold operating table, a tremor running uncontrollably through my limbs. A sharp, pulling ache radiated from my lower abdomen. This procedure, my fourth for egg retrieval, had been mandated by the Elder Council.
My inner Omega whimpered in my mind, a pathetic sound of exhaustion and sorrow.
Beside me, Kael held my hand.
His large, warm palm completely engulfed my cold fingers. An oppressive weight, heavy with the scent of dark pine and an impending thunderstorm, settled over the operating table. This Alpha scent, deliberately released, was a net meant to ensnare my panicked instincts and drag them into submission.
"Elara, my sweet Luna," Kael murmured. His voice was a deep, rumbling purr that vibrated against my skin. He brushed a sweaty strand of hair from my forehead. "You need to stop this. The pain is destroying you. The Elders can be managed. We can live without a pup."
His eyes, a striking shade of amber, regarded me with what might have been mistaken for deep concern.
I shook my head weakly, gripping his fingers tighter. "No, Kael. Your mother and the Council will never accept that. The pack needs an heir. You are the Alpha."
The Alpha was the absolute ruler of our pack, the strongest wolf who protected us all. As his Luna, the mother of the pack, it was my sacred duty to provide him with a strong bloodline. Especially since I was born a bottom-tier Omega, a servant class wolf. I needed a pup to prove I was worthy of standing beside him.
Kael sighed, a heavy sound that made the air in the room feel thick. He leaned closer, his lips brushing against my ear.
"I have already solved the problem, Elara. The Council will have its heir, and your suffering is at an end."
The air in my lungs seemed to turn to ice, refusing to be exhaled.
"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
Kael smiled, but the warmth did not reach his amber eyes.
"I have impregnated a high-ranking Beta female. Selene."
The words hung in the air, and I felt the slow, deliberate cessation of blood flow in my veins.
"She carries strong genes," Kael continued, his tone dangerously casual. "When the pup is born, we will take it. You will raise it as your own. It will be a suitable heir. My mother has already given her consent."
My mouth opened, but no sound came out. A silent, internal roar echoed in the hollow space of my skull, a vibration of pure agony from my inner wolf.
I violently snatched my hand away from his grip.
"You did what?" I gasped, struggling to sit up despite the tearing pain in my stomach. "After seven years of me crying, bleeding, and begging the Moon Goddess for a child? Seven years of you holding my hand through these surgeries?"
I bit down on my lower lip, the taste of rust filling my mouth, but it was not enough to stop the acidic burn in my eyes as my vision completely dissolved. "How could you make a joke out of my pain, Kael?"
Kael's face hardened, his jaw ticking. He showed no remorse.
"It was the Heat, Elara," he stated coldly.
The Heat was a biological frenzy, a burning fever that stripped away reason and left only the primal urge to breed.
"It was a biological response to the full moon. She was there. It took one time." He reached out to touch my cheek, but I flinched away. "It is just a breeding instinct. You are the only female I have ever Marked."
He gestured to the permanent bite scar on my neck, the ultimate claim of a mate. "You will always be my Luna."
His voice was soft, but the words felt like heavy stones crushing my chest.
"If you truly do not want it," Kael whispered, his breath fanning my face, "I will order the Beta to abort the pup today."
A fresh wave of physical agony ripped through my abdomen. The emotional shock collided with the surgical trauma. Warm, sticky liquid pooled between my legs. I was hemorrhaging.
Black spots danced in my vision. The telepathic channel that bound us, the Mind-link, did not merely close; it felt as if a rusted iron door had been slammed shut inside my head.
The sudden silence in my mind was the last thing I felt before the darkness swallowed me.
When I woke, the first thing I saw was the moonstone-cold and luminous, resting in a velvet box beside my bed. A gift. As if a piece of rock could fill the hollow where my heart used to be.
Elara POV
I slowly opened my eyes.
The familiar silk canopy of the Alpha Manor's master bedroom greeted me. A soft, glowing light caught my attention. A young Omega nurse stood by my bedside, holding a velvet box. Inside rested a massive, glowing moonstone necklace.
"The Alpha won this rare piece at an auction for you, Luna," the nurse said timidly. "He hopes it will soothe you."
I stared at the stone, feeling nothing but a hollow void in my chest. He seemed to think a piece of luminous rock could mend the organ in my chest that was ceasing to beat.
The heavy oak door creaked open.
Kael walked in, carrying a silver tray with a steaming bowl of herbal recovery soup. He looked like the perfect, devoted mate.
"You are awake," he said, his voice coated in a false tenderness. He sat on the edge of the bed and scooped up a spoonful of the dark liquid. "Open your mouth, Elara. You lost a lot of blood."
The smell of the herbs mixed with his scent, making my stomach heave. A sudden, violent pressure built behind my ribs, and with all my remaining strength, I swung my arm.
My hand slammed into the bowl. The hot soup splashed all over Kael's crisp white shirt, staining it a dark, ugly brown. The silver bowl clattered loudly against the hardwood floor.
Get out! I screamed through our re-opened Mind-link, the force of my mental voice making the nurse cover her ears. Get out of my room!
Kael's head snapped up. His amber pupils narrowed into dangerous, vertical slits. The tender mate vanished, replaced by the terrifying ruler of the pack.
He released the Alpha's Command.
It was a crushing, invisible pressure that made the very air in the room feel dense and viscous, forcing the nurse's knees to buckle until they struck the floor with a dull, audible thud.
"You will not throw a tantrum like a feral pup in front of the servants," Kael growled. His voice was a low vibration that demanded the instinctive bending of every spine in the room.
I gritted my teeth against the pressure, my bones aching.
"Then let me go," I choked out, staring into his glowing eyes. "I want a Rejection."
The room grew deadly silent. The Rejection was the ultimate taboo, the severing of a soul bond chosen by the Moon Goddess.
Kael's face twisted into a mask of pure fury. He grabbed my shoulders, his fingers digging painfully into my flesh.
"Have you forgotten?" he hissed, his breath hot against my face. "Have you forgotten the night the Rogues nearly tore my throat out? I almost died protecting you!"
He was using my guilt, twisting my gratitude into a chain around my neck. He pulled me against his chest, trapping my arms.
"You will accept Selene's pregnancy," he whispered darkly into my hair. "And you will call your mother right now."
He shoved his phone into my hand.
"Remind her of her place. Remind her who pays her debts. Do it, Elara."
I stared at the glowing screen, a cold tear slipping down my chin. I was trapped in a cage, and the bars were made of my mate's obsessive control.
I pressed the phone to my ear, and the plastic of the receiver knocked against my earring, making a series of tiny, uncontrolled clicks.
The line rang twice before a harsh, raspy voice answered.
"What is it now, Elara?" my mother snapped. There was no warmth in her tone, only annoyance.
"Mom," I whispered, my voice cracking. "I... I need you."
"Don't start crying," she interrupted coldly. "Your brother owes three million dollars to the underground fighting rings run by high-ranking wolves."
A heavy weight pressed down on my chest, making it hard to breathe.
"I don't care about his gambling debts," I sobbed. "Kael is..."
"Shut up!" she hissed, her voice dropping to a panicked whisper. "Do not anger the Alpha! If he cuts off our allowance, those wolves will tear your brother to pieces."
She didn't ask about my hospital stay. She didn't care about my bleeding.
"Be a good Luna and keep your mouth shut," she ordered, and the line went dead.
The phone slipped from my numb fingers, dropping onto the silk sheets. Kael stood by the window, adjusting his cufflinks. He didn't even look at me. He knew exactly what she would say.
In the late afternoon, the door burst open. A team of Omega servants rushed in, carrying garment bags and makeup kits. They pulled me out of bed while I was still weak and dizzy. They scrubbed my skin with rough cloths, painted my face with cold brushes, and squeezed my body into a tight, suffocating silver gown. I was a thing to be handled, an object being prepared for display.
Today was the full moon festival, combined with the Elder Madam's birthday banquet. And I was the decoration Kael needed on his arm to prove his house was in order.
Elara POV
Kael grabbed my arm and dragged me into the back of his massive, bulletproof SUV. The doors locked with a heavy, final thud.
I stared blankly out the tinted window, my eyes red and swollen.
Kael reached over and pinched my chin, forcing me to look at him.
"Your brother's debt is due tomorrow," he said softly, his thumb rubbing my jaw. It was a clear, terrifying threat.
He pushed his heavy Alpha aura against my weakened Omega senses. The mate suppression forced my body to submit, my muscles locking into place.
"You will smile at the banquet," he commanded. "You will stand by my side and appear contented."
I swallowed the bitter taste in my mouth and gave a stiff, mechanical nod.
The Pack Manor was a sprawling estate, currently filled with luxury cars and hundreds of wolves. As we walked into the grand hall, the noise was deafening. High-ranking Alphas and Betas from allied packs stood in circles, laughing and drinking.
I walked beside Kael, but I felt entirely invisible. They greeted him with deep bows, but their eyes slid right past me. I was just the low-born Omega who got lucky.
At the front of the hall sat the Elder Madam, Kael's mother and the former Luna. She sat on a velvet chair like a queen on a throne.
Kael nudged me forward.
My knees hit the hard marble floor. I held up a delicate porcelain teacup, bowing my head.
"Happy birthday, Elder Madam," I said, my voice tight.
She didn't take the cup. She let me kneel there for five agonizing minutes while she chatted with a Gamma warrior. My arms trembled. The hot tea spilled over the edge, burning my fingers.
Finally, she snatched the cup, her long nails scratching my skin.
"Go away. Your cheap scent is ruining my appetite," she sneered.
I stood up, my face burning with humiliation, and fled toward the kitchens.
The kitchen was a chaotic mess of steam and shouting Omega servants. I spotted my mother in the corner, aggressively chopping vegetables. I rushed over, desperate for a familiar face.
"Mom, let me help you," I said, reaching for a knife.
She slapped my hand away so hard it stung.
"Are you crazy?" she hissed, looking around nervously. "You smell like fear and cheap Omega weakness! If the elders smell you in here, they will punish me!"
She shoved me backward. "Get out! Go back to your Alpha!"
I stumbled out of the kitchen doors, completely utterly alone in a house full of my own kind.
I walked back into the blinding lights of the banquet hall.
"Elara! Come here!"
The Elder Madam's voice echoed through the room, silencing the crowd.
I slowly walked toward her table. Standing right beside Kael was a tall, stunning woman in a tight red dress. It was Selene.
My wolf senses flared. I could smell it instantly. The sharp, distinct scent of a pregnant Beta, heavily mixed with Kael's dark pine Alpha scent. They had been close. Very close.
The Elder Madam grabbed Selene's hand, holding it up for everyone to see. A massive diamond ring sparkled on Selene's finger. The Elder Madam then placed her hand on Selene's flat stomach.
"Finally," the Elder Madam announced loudly, making sure every wolf heard. "Our pack will have a strong, pure-blooded heir. Not some weak, barren Omega mistake."
A low murmur of agreement rippled through the crowd. Every word was a heavy boulder crushing my dignity.
"Elara," the Elder Madam barked. "Bow and thank Selene for doing the duty you failed to do."
I stood frozen, the blood rushing to my ears.
Selene stepped forward, a sweet, fake smile plastered on her face. She cast a quick, calculated glance at the Elder Madam before turning to me.
"Oh, please, Elder Madam, don't be too hard on her," Selene cooed. She reached out and forcefully grabbed my wrist. "The pup is innocent. Here, Elara, feel the life inside me."
She yanked my hand toward her stomach.
It was the ultimate psychological torture. My Omega instincts violently rejected the threat to my mate bond. Before I could think, my arm jerked backward in a fierce, defensive motion. I yanked my hand out of her grip.
Selene gasped loudly. She threw her arms up and threw herself backward. She crashed directly into the Elder Madam's table. Glass shattered. Plates crashed to the floor. The Elder Madam screamed as hot soup spilled onto her lap.
The entire hall erupted into chaotic shouting.
"My baby!" Selene wailed, clutching her stomach on the floor.
A dark shadow loomed over me. Kael stood there, his eyes glowing with a terrifying, furious green light.
To maintain his absolute rule and appease his mother, he didn't hesitate.
His large hand swung through the air.
Smack!
The Alpha's unnatural strength connected with my cheek. The force lifted me off my feet and slammed me hard onto the marble floor. A high-pitched ringing pierced my ear. Warm blood trickled out of my ear canal and down my neck.
Kael stood over me, his face twisted in cold rage. But as he lowered his arm, his large hand trembled violently. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked, a fleeting flash of horror in his amber eyes before he forced the mask of the ruthless Alpha back into place.
"Apologize to her," he commanded, his voice echoing like thunder. "Now."
I lay there on the cold marble, blood pooling beneath my cheek, and looked up at the man I had loved for seven years. Something inside me-a desperate, hopeful filament that had survived every surgery, every humiliation, every cold night alone-finally burned out.
I did not apologize.
Instead, I reached up with shaking fingers and unclasped the heavy leather submission collar from my neck.
