Author: : Makoni Winnie
Genre: Werewolf
On the night of the Blood Moon, Nikky Lumpo thought she'd finally find her place-bound by fate to the Alpha she had always loved. But when Alpha Tobias Mattheus rejects her in front of the entire pack, branding her as weak and unworthy, her world shatters. Left broken and cast out, Nikky flees into the forbidden woods, where an ancient, cursed power stirs. There, she encounters Julio Irving, a monstrous, exiled Lycan who has spent centuries in the shadows. But instead of killing her, he does the unthinkable-he claims her as his mate. Bound by a force stronger than fate itself, Nikky finds herself torn between the mate who cast her aside and the beast who sees her true worth. As war looms between packs and long-buried secrets come to light, Nikky must make a choice-embrace the darkness and claim her power, or risk losing herself to a love that was never meant to be.

Chapter 1 1

Nikky Lumpo

The night air was thick with anticipation, the full Blood Moon hanging above the Darkwood Pack's gathering ground like an omen. Tonight was the night. The ceremony that would reveal true mates had been etched into my mind since childhood, a sacred ritual where the Moon Goddess herself would guide us to our fated other half. My heart pounded against my ribs, a mixture of hope and dread swirling within me.

Standing in the center of the clearing, surrounded by my packmates, I searched through the faces illuminated by the bonfire's flickering glow. My fingers curled into my palms, nails biting into flesh. The energy in the air crackled, stirring something deep inside me. Soon, the mate bond would take hold, sealing destinies with an undeniable force.

My gaze landed on Tobias Mattheus. The Alpha. The man I had loved for as long as I could remember. He stood tall, powerful, his dark hair tousled by the wind, sharp golden eyes scanning the crowd. A warrior in every sense, Tobias was the kind of Alpha legends spoke of- strong, ruthless, bound by duty. And tonight, I prayed to the Goddess that fate would finally tie us together.

A hush fell over the crowd as the pack's elders stepped forward, their robes billowing. Elder Marlow, her silver hair gleaming under the moonlight, lifted her hands. "The Moon Goddess reveals all," she intoned. "Tonight, those chosen will feel the pull of destiny."

A shiver raced down my spine. The heat of Tobias's gaze burned against my skin, and my heart leaped. Could it be? Was it really-

Pain shot through my body like lightning. A gasp tore from my lips, and I staggered. The world blurred, and a force stronger than anything I had ever known slammed into my chest. My wolf howled inside me, clawing to the surface, the overwhelming urge to run to him drowning my senses. My mate.

Tobias's eyes widened. His hands clenched at his sides. For a moment- just a moment- relief and something dangerously close to longing flickered across his face. Then it vanished, replaced by cold indifference.

He turned to face me, his voice like a blade slicing through the air. "No."

The single word echoed through the clearing. Whispers erupted around us. My breath caught, the sharp sting of rejection hitting me like a physical blow.

Elder Marlow stepped forward, brows furrowing. "Alpha Tobias, the bond has been revealed. Nikky is your fated mate."

His jaw tightened, golden eyes darkening. "She is weak." The words were spoken with the same certainty he used in battle, firm and absolute. "The Moon Goddess made a mistake."

A sharp pain lanced through my chest, far worse than the mate bond's initial pull. My knees buckled, but I refused to fall. He couldn't mean it. This had to be a mistake.

"Tobias," I whispered, barely able to speak through the lump in my throat. "You can't."

He took a step closer, towering over me. "You're not fit to stand by my side, Nikky. A Luna must be strong. You are nothing but a liability."

A collective gasp rippled through the pack. My hands trembled at my sides, fury and heartbreak warring within me. He had known me since childhood. He had fought alongside me. And still, he chose to humiliate me in front of everyone.

"I reject you," Tobias declared, voice carrying across the clearing. "Nikky Lumpo, you are not my mate."

The world tilted. A searing pain burst in my chest, my wolf's anguished cry echoing in my head. The rejection shattered something inside me, an invisible tether snapping. My breath came in short gasps, and for a moment, I thought I would break completely.

Tobias turned away, already walking back to the pack house as though I had never mattered.

Something inside me snapped. He thought I was weak? He thought I would just stand there, shattered and defeated? No. If he didn't want me, I would leave before anyone saw the tears threatening to spill. I pushed through the murmuring crowd, my body numb, my vision blurring with unshed tears. The forest loomed ahead, dark and endless. I didn't think. I ran.

Branches clawed at my skin, the wind howling in my ears. My wolf was silent, curled into herself, wounded beyond words. The bond was severed, but the pain lingered like an open wound. My feet pounded against the damp earth, driven by desperation. Away. Away from the shame, the whispers, the pitying stares.

A low growl rumbled through the trees. I froze. A presence, vast and ancient, stirred in the darkness. My pulse raced. The air thickened, charged with something primal and untamed. Eyes gleamed through the shadows-deep, piercing. Not human. Not wolf. A predator.

A monstrous figure emerged from the darkness, its hulking form barely visible under the moonlight. Clawed hands, sharp fangs, raw power rolling off him in waves. But it wasn't just the sheer size of him that made my blood run cold-it was the way he looked at me.

Like he had been waiting for me. A deep voice, gravelly and laced with something I couldn't name, shattered the silence. "Mine."

A shudder racked my body. The mate bond had been severed. Tobias had rejected me. But standing before me, the beast in the shadows spoke the one word that changed everything. Julio Irving had just claimed me as his.

Nikky Lumpo

The word hung in the air like a whispered promise and a curse all at once. Mine. Julio Irving's voice was rough, edged with something dark and primal. It sent a chill down my spine, but I couldn't tell if it was fear or something else-something dangerous and unfamiliar.

I took a step back, my breath ragged. "No," I whispered, shaking my head. "That's not possible. The bond-"

A sharp pain flared in my chest, a cruel reminder of Tobias's rejection. I had felt the bond snap, severed by his words, yet my body still trembled under the weight of another force-one just as potent, just as consuming.

Julio moved, and the moonlight caught his features. He was monstrous, yet not in the way of something grotesque. His presence was something more- more powerful, more untamed, more dangerous. His dark hair fell past his shoulders, wild and unkempt. Golden eyes burned with an unnatural glow, not like Tobias's, but deeper, older, like fire trapped beneath ice.

His bare chest rose and fell with slow, measured breaths, every inch of him rippling with raw, lethal strength. Scars marred his torso-marks of battles long past, of wounds that should have killed him but didn't. A beast. A Lycan.

The realization struck like lightning. Lycans were myths to most. Beasts who once ruled the forests before the rise of werewolf packs. Creatures who had been hunted, driven into hiding. The only reason one would still be alive was if he was strong enough to survive centuries alone.

He took a step toward me, the earth trembling beneath his weight. "Your body recognizes me, doesn't it?" His voice was lower now, almost amused.

Heat prickled across my skin. My wolf stirred-not in pain, not in fear, but in something that felt dangerously close to... longing.

No.

I forced my feet to move, retreating further. "I don't know what kind of game you're playing, but I don't belong to you."

Julio's gaze darkened, and in an instant, he was in front of me. Faster than I could comprehend, his massive form towered over mine, trapping me between him and the trees. The scent of the wild clung to him- earth and rain, tinged with something distinctly him.

His head dipped, inhaling deeply, his nose grazing my neck. A shiver rolled down my spine, every nerve in my body screaming at the contact. "You smell of rejection," he murmured, his voice a low growl. "Pain. But beneath it... your scent is still unclaimed."

My breath hitched. "I-"

Fingers brushed my wrist, warm and solid, sending an electric jolt up my arm. My heart slammed against my ribs. His touch wasn't rough or forceful, but it was sure. Like he had already decided something.

Julio tilted his head, watching me like a predator contemplating his next move. "Tobias was a fool to cast you aside."

A fresh wave of pain slashed through me at the mention of Tobias's name, but it was different now. The hurt was still there, but it wasn't all-consuming. Not when something else had taken its place. Something primal. Something dangerous.

I should have been terrified. Everything about Julio screamed run. But my feet remained rooted to the ground. My pulse thundered, not from fear but from something more treacherous.

"You don't even know me," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

His lips curled at the edges, a ghost of a smirk. "I know enough."

Julio lifted his hand, fingers tracing a slow path along my jawline. "You don't feel it yet," he murmured, "but you will."

A shudder racked through me. The mate bond was supposed to be sacred, unbreakable. And yet Tobias had shattered it without a second thought. Now, standing in the dark woods with a beast who shouldn't exist, a new bond was clawing its way into my veins. Julio Irving had claimed me. And the most terrifying part? A part of me wanted to let him.

Chapter 2 2

Nikky Lumpo

Dew clung to my skin, the cool night air doing little to ease the fire raging beneath my flesh. My heart pounded, a war drum in my chest, each beat a reminder of how much my life had changed in a single night.

Tobias had rejected me. The mate bond, something meant to be eternal, had been ripped apart with a few cruel words. But here, in the depths of the forest, another force called to me- one I didn't understand, one I wasn't sure I wanted to.

Julio Irving still stood before me, his golden eyes gleaming with something dark and unrelenting.

"You don't get to claim me," I spat, stepping back. Distance. I needed distance before whatever this was swallowed me whole.

His lips curled, amusement flickering across his face. "You think this is something I chose?" He closed the gap between us in a single stride, heat radiating from his massive frame. "Fate does not ask, Nikky. It takes."

A shiver ran through me, but I refused to cower. "The mate bond doesn't work that way. I already had a mate." My throat tightened, the words tasting like ash.

His expression hardened. "No. You had a coward who turned his back on what was given to him. Fate does not tolerate weakness." His gaze dropped to my trembling hands. "Neither should you."

Fury and heartbreak twisted inside me, a volatile storm I couldn't control. "You don't know me. You don't know what I should or shouldn't do."

Julio studied me in silence, his unreadable expression only adding to my frustration.

A sharp breeze cut through the trees, rustling the branches overhead. My wolf stirred, unsettled, instincts screaming that nothing about this moment was normal. The mate bond had been severed, yet my body responded to Julio's presence in a way I couldn't explain.

"You can feel it, can't you?" he murmured. "The pull?"

Denial sat heavy on my tongue, but I couldn't force the lie past my lips. Every nerve in my body was attuned to him, drawn in by something deeper than reason.

"This isn't real," I whispered, more to myself than him. "It can't be."

Julio exhaled slowly, his patience worn thin. "Fate does not make mistakes, Nikky. If I were not meant to find you, I wouldn't have." His fingers twitched at his sides like he was restraining himself from reaching for me. "Your pain called to me."

A sharp ache twisted inside me. Tobias's rejection had left me raw, open, vulnerable. But Julio's words stirred something deeper, something far more dangerous.

Silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating. My body screamed for me to run, to flee from whatever this was before it consumed me completely. But my feet refused to move.

Julio's gaze remained steady, unwavering. "You don't have to accept it tonight," he said, voice quieter now. "But the truth doesn't change just because you refuse to see it."

Turning away, he stepped back into the shadows, his presence lingering long after he disappeared into the trees.

Alone once more, I wrapped my arms around myself, staring at the path he had taken.

The truth?

The truth was that my world had already changed. And I wasn't sure if I'd ever be able to go back.

Tobias Mattheus

The scent of her pain still clung to the air, a bitter sting against my senses.

Standing at the edge of the forest, I clenched my fists, fighting the urge to chase after her. Nikky was gone. She had run, just like I knew she would, just like I had made her.

Jaw tightening, I forced myself to ignore the ache in my chest. Weakness had no place in an Alpha's heart. The pack needed a Luna who could stand at my side without faltering. Nikky- no matter how much my wolf had craved her- wasn't strong enough.

The whispers of my pack still echoed in my ears.

He rejected her?

She was his fated mate, and he cast her aside?

What kind of Alpha does that?

Every word was a blade to my pride, but I refused to show it. Nikky would understand one day. She would see that I had done what was necessary.

Turning on my heel, I strode toward the pack house, blocking out the dull throb in my chest. The bond was severed. She meant nothing to me now. So why did it feel like I had just made the worst mistake of my life?

Nikky Lumpo

Dawn broke over the horizon, golden light filtering through the dense canopy of trees. Sleep had evaded me, my mind trapped in an endless loop of the night before.

Julio's words. Tobias's rejection. The pull of something new, something terrifying.

Stomach twisting, I dragged myself to my feet, brushing dirt from my arms. The forest had been my refuge, a place to hide from the weight of my shattered heart, but I couldn't stay here forever.

A sharp snap of a twig jerked me from my thoughts. My body went rigid. Not a wolf. Something else. The scent hit me first-sharp, metallic. Blood. A low growl rumbled through the trees, and then they emerged. Rogues.

Filthy, unkempt, eyes gleaming with hunger. Three of them. Their bodies tensed, poised to attack, lips curling over yellowed fangs.

My pulse slammed against my ribs. Alone, wounded from rejection, I was an easy target. My wolf snarled, but she was weakened, her strength drained by Tobias's cruel words. One of the rogues lunged.

Muscle memory took over. I dodged, twisting away, but pain flared through my chest. A second rogue swiped at me, claws raking across my arm. A choked cry left my lips. I wouldn't survive this. The third rogue advanced, teeth bared. My vision blurred. Then everything exploded.

A force barreled into the rogue before he reached me, a monstrous blur of movement. The sound of bones snapping filled the air, followed by a scream that was cut short. My breath hitched.

Julio.

He moved like a storm, all power and fury, tearing through the rogues like they were nothing more than leaves in the wind. Blood splattered across the ground, bodies falling, torn apart with brutal efficiency. Silence followed, thick and suffocating.

Julio stood over the lifeless bodies, chest heaving, golden eyes burning with something raw and dangerous. I stared, my breath shallow. "You followed me."

He didn't answer. Didn't move. Just watched me like he was waiting for something. Something inside me cracked.

This man- this beast- had found me twice now. Had pulled me from the edge of destruction without hesitation. Tobias had rejected me. Julio had saved me.

A shuddering breath left my lips. "What are you?"

His lips curled, but the smile never reached his eyes. "Your second chance.

Chapter 3 3

Nikky Lumpo

Julio's words settled over me like a weight I wasn't ready to carry. Your second chance. Blood soaked the forest floor, the stench of death thick in the air. My pulse hammered against my ribs as I stared at the bodies- limbs twisted at unnatural angles, throats ripped open, eyes forever frozen in terror.

Julio stood in the middle of the carnage, breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling with slow, measured control. His bare skin was splattered with crimson, streaks of red glistening in the golden morning light. He was terrifying. He was beautiful. The thought jarred me, sent my heart lurching into my throat.

I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms. "I didn't ask for your help."

A slow blink, as if my words meant nothing. He crouched beside one of the dead rogues and wiped his bloodied fingers against the corpse's tattered shirt before standing, towering over me once again.

"You would have died."

A statement. A fact. No room for argument. My pride bristled. "I could have handled it."

His golden eyes darkened. "Could you?"

A muscle in my jaw twitched. I wanted to believe it- I wanted to say yes- but the truth sat bitter on my tongue. Julio took a step closer, closing the space between us. I should have stepped back, but my feet refused to move. "You're weak," he said, voice quiet but firm. "Not because you lack strength, but because you don't know how to use it."

Heat flooded my veins. I was tired-tired of being underestimated, of being treated like something fragile. Tobias had seen me the same way, unworthy, unfit. Now this Lycan, this stranger, had the audacity to judge me too?

"I don't need your opinions," I snapped.

His lips twitched, something almost amused in his expression. "You need something." His gaze flickered over me, slow, assessing. "Because right now, you don't know who you are without him."

The words hit harder than I wanted them to. Julio stepped even closer, his presence a force all on its own. "Do you want to live, Nikky?"

My throat tightened. "What kind of question is that?"

"A simple one." His golden eyes burned into me. "Do you want to live, or do you want to keep surviving?"

My heart pounded so loudly I thought he might hear it. Living and surviving weren't the same thing.

I had spent years surviving-staying in the shadows, waiting for the day Tobias would finally see me. That day never came. He had thrown me aside without hesitation, left me shattered, alone.

The girl I had been yesterday would have begged for answers. Would have run after Tobias, desperate to prove her worth. But something had cracked inside me last night. Something had changed.

A slow breath filled my lungs. "I want to live."

Julio's smirk was barely there, a ghost of something dangerous. "Good."

My body tensed as he lifted a hand, fingers brushing the side of my face. Not possessive. Not forceful. Just... a touch. A test. Everything in me went still.

"You feel it now, don't you?" he murmured.

A pull. A connection. A force that made no sense.

I hated that he was right.

My eyes met his, searching for an answer in the depths of his golden stare. "Why me?"

Julio's fingers curled slightly, his thumb grazing my cheek. "I don't question fate," he said. "I only obey it."

A shiver rolled through me, but I didn't move away. Maybe I should have. Maybe I never would.

Tobias Mattheus

The scent of blood drifted through the trees, sharp and metallic. Something was wrong. Muscles coiled, I pushed forward, my wolf restless beneath my skin. The rogue attacks had been increasing over the past few months, but this scent was fresh. A recent kill. The thought sent a bitter taste to my tongue.

Nikky.

I hadn't seen her since last night. Had she made it out of the woods?

The bond between us was gone, severed by my own hand, yet my instincts still roared to life at the thought of her in danger. It shouldn't have mattered anymore. She was nothing to me.

So why did the thought of her hurt?

A growl rumbled in my chest. Weakness had no place in my heart. I had made the right choice.

Hadn't I?

The scent thickened. My steps quickened, boots crunching over damp earth. I reached the clearing- then froze. Bodies. Three of them, torn apart with brutal efficiency. And standing amongst the wreckage-him.

Julio Irving.

The sight of him sent rage lashing through me, primal and unforgiving. He was close to her. Too close. His hand lingered against her face, his expression unreadable. Nikky wasn't pulling away. She was letting him touch her. My wolf roared, claws itching to rip through flesh.

Julio must have sensed me because his gaze flicked up, meeting mine with a slow, deliberate stare. He didn't move. Didn't speak. Just watched.

Nikky turned. Her eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw something different. Not sadness. Not pain. Something colder. Something stronger. I had expected her to be broken. To be drowning in the weight of my rejection. Instead, she stood there with blood on her skin, fire in her eyes, and a beast beside her who wasn't me.

The air between us stretched, taut and unyielding. I had cast her aside. And now, someone else had found her.
