Harper Alvarado POV:
"To the brave warriors of the Terrell Pack! Tonight, we drink to a glorious victory!"
Alpha Fletcher Terrell's booming voice echoed through the grand banquet hall. Hundreds of wolves raised their goblets high, their deafening cheers threatening to tear down the stone walls.
Fletcher raised his goblet, his harsh, battle-worn gaze suddenly softening into something incredibly tender. "But above all else, tonight I must express my deepest, most profound gratitude to one extraordinary woman. Without her unwavering support in my darkest hours, without her being the anchor to my soul, I could never have returned triumphant."
I sat at the head table in the Luna's seat, looking at the husband who had finally returned after a year at the border. A rare, fragile wave of warmth instantly bloomed in the freezing, exhausted depths of my heart.
For the entire year he was gone, I had nearly hollowed out my entire dowry just to keep his bankrupt Pack from starving. I had stayed awake day and night, coughing up blood from sheer exhaustion, just to drag his dying mother back from the gates of hell. He saw it, I thought, my eyes growing hot with unshed tears. He finally understood my sacrifices.
Yet, Fletcher didn't even glance in my direction.
He reached out his large, calloused hand and tightly intertwined his fingers with the hand of a tall, auburn-haired female warrior. Darla Hutchinson.
Fletcher pulled her forcefully into his arms, their bodies pressed intimately together. He looked down at her, his eyes burning with a raw, naked passion and devotion I had never seen before. Darla smirked triumphantly, leaning her head against his hard armored shoulder in a blatantly possessive, sickeningly intimate display of claiming.
The fragile smile on my face instantly froze. It felt as if a cruel, heavy sledgehammer had just smashed directly into my chest, suffocating me where I sat.
Fletcher raised their intertwined hands high, and the roaring hall instantly fell dead silent. Then, he turned his head to look down at me. The tenderness in his eyes had vanished completely, replaced by the suffocating, freezing aura of an Alpha.
"Harper," his voice was stripped of all emotion, ringing out coldly under the watchful eyes of the entire Pack. "Hand over the Luna's mark. Surrender the ancestral silver ring of the Terrell Pack."
Crash.
The delicate porcelain teacup slipped from my trembling fingers, shattering into jagged shards on the floor.
"Darla is my True Mate," Fletcher declared loudly, completely ignoring the shattered porcelain at my feet. "From today on, she is the Luna of this Pack, and you will step down to be my concubine."
I sat frozen in my chair, the blood draining entirely from my face. "A concubine?" My voice trembled violently, thick with disbelief and surging grievance. "Fletcher, we are husband and wife, bound under the witness of the Moon Goddess. Have you forgotten the vow you made to me before you left? You swore I would be your only Luna, forever."
"Stop being so utterly delusional, Harper!" Fletcher sneered, his lips curling into an arc of sheer disgust.
"Let's lay all the cards on the table," he mocked, his voice dripping with venom. "The only reason you were able to wear that ring in the first place was because you used your family's wealth and power to shamelessly force my hand! But what are you now? The great House Alvarado is nothing but a dead, rotting graveyard!"
Cruel whispers and gasps erupted from the banquet tables. My fingernails dug so hard into my palms that they drew blood.
My father and brothers had died in battle years ago, and shortly after, my mother and the entire household of the old, the weak, the women, and the children were brutally slaughtered by enemy spies! Simply because my father and brothers posed such a massive threat to the enemy nation, their very name struck terror even after their deaths. Enemy forces infiltrated my home and annihilated my entire bloodline! Every single person was hacked with seventy-two sword strikes. Even my third brother's newborn son was butchered and dismembered so horribly his tiny body wasn't left intact.
This had always been the deepest, most agonizing, bleeding wound in my soul.
"The only reason you survived that massacre is because you were hiding here, behind the walls of the Terrell Pack!" Fletcher stepped closer. My deepest trauma had become his ultimate leverage to control me. "You have absolutely nothing and no one left to rely on in this world! Asking you to step down is for the greater good of the Pack. Letting you stay as a lowly concubine is an act of profound, merciful charity on my part! You should be on your knees thanking the Goddess that I am not sweeping you out like trash to freeze to death in this harsh winter!"
Before I could even recover from his horrifyingly vicious words, Darla stepped forward. She leaned intimately against Fletcher's armored shoulder, her amber eyes raking over me with a sickening blend of fake pity and blatant mockery.
"Oh, Fletcher, don't be so cruel to her," Darla said, putting on the mask of a generous, carefree heroine, her voice loud enough for the whole hall to hear. "Harper, please don't cry. You're a pitiful orphan now; it's only natural you'd cling desperately to Fletcher. I'm a warrior. I couldn't care less about a vain, empty title like 'Luna.' I only care about fighting beside the man I love."
She flashed me a condescending, superior smile. "So, you can keep managing the Pack's ledgers and the inner estate from now on. I absolutely loathe those petty, trivial chores meant for servants anyway. I belong on the training grounds. I could never learn to play house like a fragile, broken greenhouse flower who only knows how to cling to a man like you."
From the side, my mother-in-law, Genevieve, chimed in perfectly from her seat of honor. "Darla's military merits have brought us unparalleled glory. Harper, the Pack feeds you and gives you a roof over your head. You need to know your place and learn how to be grateful."
Grateful?
In that instant, the suffocating grip of grievance and injustice around my throat just... snapped.
On the very night of our wedding, Fletcher was suddenly summoned to the border, and his mother fell gravely ill. It was I who used my hard gold and silver to snatch that old hag back from the Reaper's clutches. Every single drop of wine these wolves were drinking tonight was bought with my dowry!
And now, they were standing on the bloody corpses of my slaughtered family, publicly stripping me of my dignity, and demanding that I stay as their grateful, unpaid beast of burden?!
It was as if a massive bucket of ice water had been dumped over my head. The agonizing, soul-tearing heartbreak suddenly twisted into a sickening, absurdly ridiculous wave of pure nausea.
Fletcher sighed, seemingly annoyed by my silence. "Listen, just accept your new position. It's for the best for everyone."
"Okay," I said, my voice eerily calm.
Fletcher blinked, clearly caught off guard by how easily I yielded. "You... you agree?"
I slowly raised my left hand. With agonizing, suffocating slowness, I slid the heavy, ancestral silver Luna ring off my ring finger. The metal clinked sharply as I dropped it onto the mahogany table.
"If that is the Alpha's command," I lowered my eyes, completely masking the lethal, venomous sharpness hidden in my gaze. "I step down."
Darla's lips curled into a triumphant smirk, and Fletcher let out a long breath of relief. They looked at each other, their eyes full of victory and deep affection.
I stood up, smoothing the invisible wrinkles on my dress with a terrifying calmness. I gave them one last, perfect curtsy befitting a lowly concubine, playing the part of the defeated, obedient victim to absolute perfection.
But the moment I turned my back and walked toward the doors of that roaring banquet hall, a twisted, bone-chilling sneer finally broke through the fragile mask on my face.
Enjoy my seat, Darla, I mocked from the dark, icy corners of my mind.
I can't wait to see if your True Mate will still love you quite this much when this 'stray dog' completely cuts off your food supply, and you don't even have moldy scraps left to eat.
Harper Alvarado POV:
The long, freezing corridor of the Packhouse seemed endless. I walked with my back perfectly straight, ignoring the mocking whispers and gloating stares of the servants hiding in the shadows.
When I finally pushed open the heavy oak door to my own chambers, the biting cold hit me instantly. The fireplace was completely dead. Not a single piece of coal had been delivered for the night.
The moment the door clicked shut, sealing us inside, my maid, Phoebe, collapsed to her knees. "Miss... how could he? How could Alpha Fletcher do this?!" Phoebe sobbed, her fingers digging desperately into the cold floorboards. "He knew! He knew how much that night destroyed you! How could he use the slaughter of the Master, the Madam, and the young lords as a weapon to humiliate you in front of everyone?!"
Tears streamed down Phoebe's face, her eyes filled with a blood-deep, agonizing hatred. "My parents and my brother were hacked to pieces that night too! Their blood soaked the very soil we grew up on! We barely survived that hell, and for a whole year, you coughed up your own blood to keep his wretched Pack alive! Yet he stomped on our family's bloody graves just to lift that woman up!"
Looking at Phoebe, my childhood companion who shared my deepest, most horrifying trauma, the last fragile thread of sorrow in my heart simply... snapped.
"Stand up, Phoebe," I said, my voice dropping to an eerie, frozen whisper. I knelt and gently wiped the tears from her face. "Tears cannot wash away the blood of our families. Fletcher said House Alvarado is nothing but a dead, rotting graveyard. Then it is time we show him how the ghosts from that graveyard feast."
Phoebe choked back her sobs, looking at me with widened eyes.
"Bring me the dowry ledgers," I commanded, standing up. "Every single one."
Phoebe rushed to the locked mahogany chest and pulled out the heavy leather-bound ledgers. As I flipped through the pages, a testament to the immense wealth of my martyred family, I noticed the recent discrepancies.
"The revenue from our merchant shops in the capital," I traced the ink with my finger, my eyes narrowing. "Why hasn't this month's gold been transferred to my private vault?"
Phoebe gritted her teeth, her fists trembling with fresh rage. "It was the old Luna, Genevieve. She ordered the stewards to intercept the funds this morning. And it's not just the gold, Miss. She had the guards raid our secondary storehouse and took the exquisite ruby jewelry set left by your mother!"
"My mother's rubies?" A dangerous, murderous glint flashed in the grey depths of my eyes.
"They even cut off our winter coal to heat Darla's pavilion," Phoebe added bitterly, looking at the dead fireplace.
"Let them enjoy the warmth while it lasts," I said, snapping the ledger shut with a sharp crack that echoed like a gunshot. "Because winter is here."
I walked to the window. Down in the courtyard, the Terrell warriors were laughing, drinking the wine bought with my gold.
"Starting tomorrow morning," I ordered, my tone absolute and merciless. "Send the secret guard to every Alvarado-owned business, farm, and mine. Cease all fund transfers to the Terrell Pack. Cut off their food supplies, their winter clothing, their weapon shipments, and their medical herbs. Freeze every single copper coin."
Phoebe's eyes ignited with a fierce, vengeful fire. "You mean... we cut them off completely?"
"Completely," I turned to face her. "Since Darla loathes the 'petty chores' of managing a Pack, let's see how her glorious sword skills conjure bread out of thin air. I want a detailed calculation of everything they have leeched from us this past year. They will vomit it all back up, with interest."
Fletcher thought he had discarded a useless burden. He had no idea he had just severed his own life support.
But simply cutting off the money wasn't enough. Fletcher had the Alpha King's blessing for this union. If I stayed, they would eventually use Pack Law to force me to yield, draining me dry as a captive concubine.
I needed to sever the bond at its very root.
"Prepare ink and parchment," I said, my gaze shifting toward the distant, towering spires of the Royal Palace. "I am writing to the Alpha King."
Phoebe gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. To petition the King directly was an incredibly bold, almost taboo move for a female wolf.
But I didn't care. Fletcher used his military merits to secure his true love? Fine. Let's see how his merits weigh against the blood of my family.
I picked up the quill. My handwriting sharp, decisive, and filled with lethal intent.
I reminded the King that my father and six brothers were martyred heroes who had shed their last drop of blood defending his empire. I, Harper Alvarado, was their only surviving bloodline.
I implored the Alpha King, in consideration of House Alvarado's generations of loyalty and ultimate sacrifice, to grant an absolute annulment of my union with Fletcher Terrell. I stated that the Terrell Pack was forcibly seizing the assets of a martyr's orphan to fund a mistress, and I requested royal permission to take back my dowry and leave.
After the last word was written, I blew the ink dry, folded the letter, and sealed it with the Alvarado family crest.
"Find the most reliable messenger in our secret guard," I ordered, handing the heavy envelope to Phoebe. "Ride through the night. Deliver this straight to the Royal Court."
Harper Alvarado POV:
Two days had passed since my letter was dispatched by the secret guard. The Royal Pack hadn't replied yet, but I wasn't anxious. A petition of that magnitude took time.
Someone else in the Packhouse, however, was completely out of time.
"Bang, bang, bang!"
The door to my quarters was pounded on impatiently. Clara, the personal maid of the old Luna, Genevieve Terrell, stood outside with her nose pointed at the ceiling.
"Miss Alvarado," Clara announced, deliberately dropping the title of 'Luna' or even 'Madam'. "The old Luna requests your presence in the main parlor immediately."
Phoebe bristled beside me, but I simply gave her a calming glance. I smoothed out the non-existent wrinkles on my elegant dress and followed Clara to the battlefield. I knew exactly why I was being summoned. The financial freeze had finally hit them where it hurt.
Genevieve Terrell sat in the center of the lavish parlor. This was the woman I had spent sleepless nights tending to, the woman I had dragged from the jaws of death with my own hands and gold.
I offered a flawless, emotionally detached curtsy. "Lady Genevieve, you sent for me?"
"Harper, my dear child, come sit," she said, her voice dripping with artificial affection as she patted the plush seat closest to her.
I didn't move closer, opting instead for a single chair further away. Her smile stiffened for a fraction of a second before she sighed, shaking her head like a helpless elder.
"I heard about what Fletcher did. That boy is young and foolish," Genevieve began, her tone soft and placating. "I know you feel wronged, Harper. But let's be honest between us women... Darla is just a rough, unrefined brute who spent her life rolling in the mud and blood with men. She has no aristocratic grace, no manners. How could her looks or temperament ever compare to a delicate, noble flower like you?"
I watched her perform, my heart cold and detached.
"She might get the empty title of Luna because of her military merits, but she knows nothing of running an estate," Genevieve continued, leaning forward as if sharing a secret. "So, my dear, why lower yourself to bicker with a brute like her? I heard you froze the merchant accounts out of a little childish jealousy. Unfreeze them, let her have her little ceremony, and be the bigger person. As long as you hold the purse strings, you will always be the true mistress of this Pack in my eyes."
I stared at her, my stomach churning with pure, unadulterated disgust.
To get my money, this old hag was perfectly willing to smile in my face and ruthlessly degrade the very woman her son claimed was his 'True Mate'. They wanted Darla's military glory, but they desperately needed me to remain their obedient, bottomless ATM.
"The true mistress?" I let out a soft, chilling laugh. The temperature in the room seemed to drop. "If Darla is just a rough, unrefined brute, Lady Genevieve, then she certainly isn't worthy of wearing the rubies from my mother's dowry. Nor is she worthy of a ceremony funded by my gold."
Genevieve's fake smile instantly shattered. She realized her usual gaslighting wasn't working. The obedient, soft-spoken daughter-in-law she thought she could easily manipulate was gone.
Her face darkened, the mask slipping to reveal her aristocratic entitlement. "Harper! I am speaking to you nicely, do not push my patience!" she snapped, slamming her teacup onto the saucer. "Fletcher needs her strength on the battlefield, and he needs your wealth to secure the Pack's future! Together, you both serve the Alpha. It is your duty to fund this Pack, concubine or not!"
"My duty?" I stood up slowly, my gaze sharp as a silver blade. "I dragged you out of the grave with my gold, and you use it to fund a party for your son's mistress? My duty to this parasitic Pack ended the moment your son demanded my Luna ring."
Genevieve shot to her feet, her face turning pale with shock and fury. "How dare you speak to me like that?! You are Fletcher's woman! The Alvarado wealth belongs to the Terrell estate! You cannot just cut us off!"
"Oh, but I can," I said, taking a step closer, my presence suddenly far more imposing than hers. "And I already have. From this moment on, the Terrell Pack will not see a single copper coin from me."
I gave her another flawless curtsy of farewell. "Furthermore, I will be moving back to the Alvarado estate in the city this afternoon. I refuse to breathe the same air as a den of two-faced leeches."
"You can't leave!" Genevieve panicked, finally realizing the gravity of the situation. "Your marriage to Fletcher is bound by law! You are trapped here until he says otherwise!"
"Then let us see if the Alpha King sides with a pack of blood-sucking betrayers, or with the orphaned daughter of martyred heroes," I replied coldly.
Genevieve's eyes widened in sheer terror. "The Alpha King? What... what have you done?!"
I turned my back on her, refusing to look at her face, which was now completely twisted with dread.
At the doorway, I paused and looked over my shoulder. "Oh, and by the way, my lady. Good luck paying for those expensive caterers with your son's 'true love'. I'm sure Darla's rough manners will impress them instead of gold."
I stepped out into the hallway, just as a loud crash erupted from behind the doors. Genevieve had hurled her expensive porcelain teacup against the wall in a fit of impotent rage.
