ELARA POV:
"I, Roderick Sharp, officially reject Elara Vance as my mate."
The ancient, unbreakable words of the werewolf law boomed over the speakers, echoing off the high ceilings of the Silver Moon Pack's grand ballroom.
The champagne flute slipped from my numb fingers, shattering on the marble floor.
It felt as if a massive, invisible hand reached into my chest and crushed my heart. I gasped, my knees buckling as a soul-tearing agony ripped through my nervous system, forcing me to the ground.
I looked up through blurred vision at the man who was supposed to be my fated mate. Roderick stood in the glaring spotlight, his broad shoulders puffed out in a cheap display of arrogance.
His eyes, which I once thought held warmth, were twisted into a hideous squint of pure, unfiltered disgust. His lips curled into a cruel, mocking sneer that made his handsome face look utterly repulsive.
"Her scarred face and her weak, pathetic Omega genetics are an insult to my new standing as Gamma," Roderick spat into the microphone, making sure every single guest heard him. He didn't just want to sever our bond; he wanted to destroy me.
I instinctively raised my trembling fingers to trace the jagged, raised flesh on my left cheek. The scar ran from my brow down to my jawline.
Years ago, he had promised that the moment he gained power and wealth, his first act would be to hire the best Healer to remove it. Instead, he used his new rank to throw me away like a piece of rotting garbage.
Beside me in the suffocating shadows, my half-sister Nora let out a sharp, malicious laugh. She stepped on the hem of my thin dress with her sharp heel, forcing me to stay on my knees.
"Did you really think a powerful man like Roderick would want a hideous monster like you? Learn your place, sister."
Gasps and cruel snickers rippled through the sea of silk gowns and tailored tuxedos. Hundreds of pointed fingers and mocking eyes pinned me to the floor.
I felt stripped naked, my skin burning under the weight of their collective humiliation.
I couldn't breathe. I scrambled to my feet, tearing my dress from Nora's heel, and stumbled blindly out of the ballroom. The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind me, sealing my disgrace.
I barely made it to the front steps of the estate before a heavy hand grabbed my shoulder. I looked up, desperately hoping to see a shred of pity in my father's eyes.
Instead, Alpha Warren Bennett stared down at me with absolute contempt, his face twisted in the same ugly sneer as Roderick's.
"You have disgraced the Bennett family," my father snarled, kicking my broken champagne glass aside. He pointed toward the wrought-iron gates.
"As of this moment, you are no longer a member of the Silver Moon Pack."
Two burly guards grabbed me by the arms. They dragged me down the driveway, my knees scraping against the rough gravel, and threw me out into the street.
The skies opened up, and freezing rain instantly soaked through my torn, thin dress.
I walked aimlessly through the downpour, the chill of the rain nothing compared to the hollow, bleeding crater in my chest. I had lost everything. My mate, my pack, my family.
Hours later, my frozen, bleeding feet stopped in front of a heavy, unmarked door in the city's underbelly. A neon sign buzzed above it:
The Obsidian Den. It was a notorious private club where the most powerful, dangerous wolves came to indulge in anonymity.
A reckless, self-destructive urge clawed at my throat. I wanted to drown. I wanted to feel something other than the excruciating pain of rejection. I pushed the heavy oak door open.
The air inside was thick with cigar smoke and the heavy, intoxicating musk of mixed pheromones. I shivered, walking stiffly to the dimly lit bar, and ordered the strongest whiskey they had.
"Drinking alone, little wolf?" a deep, gravelly voice rumbled right beside my ear.
I turned my head. A massive shadow of a man sat on the stool next to me. The lighting obscured his features, but the sheer, suffocating weight of his Alpha aura made the air around us crackle.
Then, it hit me.
A scent-a rich, intoxicating blend of sandalwood and petrichor-flooded my senses. It bypassed my brain and struck straight at my soul.
My heart rate skyrocketed, hammering against my ribs. A violent shiver racked my body, goosebumps erupting across my wet skin.
The gaping, bleeding wound Roderick had left in my spirit suddenly felt... stitched together. A profound, overwhelming sense of peace washed over the agony.
Deep inside me, my weak, suppressed Omega wolf let out a desperate, needy whimper.
He didn't ask my name. He just stared at my face. He looked at the ugly, jagged scar, but there was no disgust in his dark eyes. Only a bottomless, consuming hunger.
"I just want to be a beautiful fool tonight," I choked out, the whiskey burning my throat and blurring my senses. "I just want one moment where I am not judged by this scar."
He was silent for a heavy second. Then, he reached out. His large, warm fingers gently brushed against my unscarred cheek.
The moment his skin touched mine, a violent jolt of electricity shot through my veins. I gasped, my toes curling in my ruined shoes.
"One night," he murmured, his voice a dark promise. "No names. No tomorrow."
I nodded, utterly mesmerized, and placed my trembling hand in his.
He pulled me up, wrapping a heavy coat around my shivering shoulders, and led me out the back door of the club.
A sleek, black SUV with tinted windows waited in the alley. A man in a sharp black suit opened the rear door. I climbed into the back with the mysterious, overwhelming Alpha, surrendering my broken life to the dark of the night.
ELARA POV:
I woke up tangled in sheets of Egyptian cotton, the morning sun glaring through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a luxury penthouse suite.
My body ached with a deep, heavy soreness, but my mind was flooded with memories of the night before. It had been a blur of frantic heat, desperate skin, and a tenderness I had never known. The mysterious man hadn't asked my name, but he had kissed my scar over and over, whispering into my skin that I was beautiful.
I rolled over, reaching out.
The other side of the bed was empty. The sheets were cold.
He was gone.
I sat up, pulling the duvet over my bare chest. On the mahogany nightstand, next to a glass of water, sat a sleek black card. Written on it in sharp, elegant handwriting was a single word:
Leave.
My stomach dropped. The warm, foolish hope that had bloomed in my chest withered instantly. Of course. It was just a transaction. I was an idiot to think a powerful Alpha would want a scarred, rejected Omega for anything more than a quick release.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and swung my legs out of bed. I checked the crook of my neck in the mirror. Smooth skin. No bite mark. He had kept his promise of "no tomorrow." He hadn't Marked me. It was a blessing, but it felt like a second, quieter rejection.
I picked up my ruined, rain-stained dress from the floor, a bitter laugh escaping my lips.
A sharp knock on the suite door made me jump.
I clutched a thick hotel bathrobe tightly around my body and opened the door a crack. Two men in black suits stood in the hallway. One of them was the driver from last night.
The driver held out a thick paper bag, his face completely devoid of emotion. "This is from the boss. You have ten minutes to vacate the premises."
I took the bag. Inside was a neatly folded, expensive-looking dress, and beneath it, a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills.
The money hit me like a physical slap to the face. In his eyes, I wasn't even a one-night stand. I was a whore to be paid off and dismissed.
Hot, blinding anger surged through my veins. I grabbed the stack of cash, threw the door wide open, and hurled the money directly at the driver's chest. The bills exploded into a shower of green paper, fluttering down to the carpet.
"Tell your boss I don't need his charity!" I spat, my voice shaking with rage.
The driver didn't even blink. He calmly bent down and began picking up the bills. "Miss Vance, the boss's orders are not to be questioned."
My blood ran cold. Miss Vance.
He knew my name. They had investigated me.
Panic seized my chest. I was no longer an Alpha's daughter under the protection of a Pack. I was a rogue Omega with no status and no one to look for me. These men could make me disappear, and no one would care.
I slammed the door shut, my hands trembling violently. I stripped off the robe, threw on the dress they provided, and practically ran out of the suite, leaving the money on the floor.
I hurried through the opulent hotel lobby, keeping my head down. As I passed the lounge area, the large flat-screen TV caught my eye.
The morning financial news was on. The anchor was talking about a major corporate merger. But it wasn't the words that stopped me. It was the face on the screen.
It was him.
The man from last night. He was wearing a sharp, tailored suit, his jaw clenched, his eyes cold and ruthless. The caption beneath his face read: Damien Carlisle, CEO of The Citadel Group.
My breath hitched. Damien Carlisle. The Alpha King of the most powerful Pack in the state. The ruthless corporate titan who ruled the city's underworld and upper crust alike.
My knees went weak. I had slept with Damien Carlisle.
But the news segment wasn't over. The camera panned out, showing a stunning, elegant woman standing beside him, holding his arm. The anchor's voice continued cheerfully, "Carlisle made a rare public appearance today alongside his mate, Meredith Sterling, and their two beautiful children..."
The world tilted on its axis.
He had a mate. He had children.
I wasn't just a paid-off whore. I was a homewrecker. The tenderness he showed me last night was a lie, a temporary escape from his perfect, powerful life.
I burst through the revolving door of the hotel and ran down the sidewalk at full speed.
Shame, heartbreak, and my profound and terrifying reality all came crashing down upon me.
Running while crying, I felt as if the sky had collapsed.
When the tears finally stopped, a cold, hard numbness settled over me.
I couldn't stay in this city. I couldn't stay in the werewolf world.
I walked to the nearest bus terminal and bought a one-way ticket to the most remote human town on the map.
I sat by the window in the back of the rattling bus, watching the towering skyscrapers fade into the distance. Without realizing it, my hand drifted down to rest flat against my lower stomach.
I didn't know it then, but a seed had already been planted in the darkest moment of my life.
I swore to the Moon Goddess, as the bus carried me into exile, that if I ever returned, I would never let anyone break me again.
ELARA POV:
Five years later.
I stepped out of the sliding glass doors of the international airport. The heavy, polluted air of the city hit my lungs, laced with the faint, underlying scent of the Silver Moon Pack's territorial markers.
I pulled the collar of my designer trench coat up and adjusted my oversized sunglasses. My fingers brushed my left cheek. The skin was perfectly smooth.
The jagged, ugly scar that had defined my miserable existence for twenty years was gone. It had vanished a year ago, melting away after a terrifying, week-long fever that nearly killed me.
That fever hadn't just healed my face; it had burned away my weakness. It altered my very biology, masking my old, fragile Omega scent of sandalwood and rain with a sharp, freezing aura of winter frost and ash.
I was no longer the pathetic, scarred girl they threw out into the freezing rain. I was forged in hell, and I had returned as a weapon.
I walked purposefully toward the VIP pick-up lane, my stilettos clicking rhythmically against the concrete.
"... Miss Vance?"
A raspy, hesitant voice tried to break my momentum.
I stopped and turned slowly. Standing near a sleek black town car was an old man in a chauffeur's uniform. Rufus Sullivan. My father's driver. He was the only person in the Bennett household who had ever looked at me with an ounce of kindness.
Rufus stared at me, his cloudy eyes wide with absolute, earth-shattering shock. His gaze darted from my confident posture to my smooth left cheek. "Is it really you? Your face... your scent..."
I lowered my sunglasses just enough to look him in the eye. I didn't shrink away. "It's been a long time, Uncle Rufus."
Tears welled up in the old man's eyes. He gripped the car door. "You're back. Thank the Goddess. The Alpha... he has missed you."
Missed me. A cold, mocking laugh escaped my red lips. Alpha Warren Bennett didn't miss his daughter. He missed a pawn he thought he could still control.
I reached into my handbag to grab my phone, but a small, folded piece of glossy paper slipped out, fluttering toward the concrete pavement.
It was a faded ultrasound photo. The grainy black-and-white image of a tiny, curled-up fetus.
Rufus bent down to retrieve it, but my hand lashed out with a speed that left him blinking in shock. I snatched the photo out of mid-air before his fingers could even brush it, smoothly tucking it back into my hidden inner pocket. I didn't panic. I didn't tremble.
"Some ghosts are better left in the dark, Rufus," I said, my voice smooth as silk but carrying a blade of authority that made him instantly straighten up and bow his head.
"My apologies, Miss Elara. The car is waiting. The Alpha instructed me to bring you straight to the estate."
I slid into the luxurious leather back seat, crossing my legs elegantly.
Rufus watched me through the rearview mirror, his brow furrowed with worry as we merged onto the highway. "You're here for the severance ceremony, aren't you, Miss? Roderick is the Gamma now. Rumor has it he's going to announce his engagement to Nora... your sister, very soon."
He expected me to cry. He expected the old Elara to shatter at the mention of their names.
Instead, a dark, dangerous smile played on my lips. "Good for them, Rufus. Trash always ends up in the same bin eventually."
Rufus choked on a gasp, his eyes widening in the mirror. He realized then that the girl he knew was dead.
I rested my hand over my flat stomach, feeling the phantom weight of the life that had grown there five years ago. I wasn't here to mourn a broken mate bond. I was here to legally sever my past, burn their pride to the ground, and tear this city apart until I found out who stole my son.
The car turned onto the long, winding driveway of the Bennett estate. The towering stone mansion used to look imposing. Now, it just looked like a crumbling cage built for fools.
I pulled down the sun visor and checked my reflection. Ice-blue eyes, flawless porcelain skin, and a jawline sharp enough to cut glass.
The game was just beginning, and I was holding all the cards.
Rufus rushed to open my door, but I was already out. I didn't wait for him to carry my luggage. I walked up the massive stone steps, the sheer weight of my new aura making the two burly guards at the entrance flinch and step back instinctively.
I pushed the heavy double doors open myself, the loud thud echoing through the grand foyer.
Standing there were my father, Alpha Warren, my stepmother Eleanor, and my half-sister Nora. They were dressed impeccably, their chins raised high, waiting to look down on the ruined, scarred daughter returning in absolute disgrace.
They turned to sneer at me.
The smug superiority on their faces shattered into a million pieces. Eleanor gasped loudly, her hand flying to her throat as if she were choking. Nora's jaw practically unhinged, her eyes bugging out of her head, turning a sick, vibrant shade of green with instant, visceral jealousy as she stared at my unblemished face and perfect figure. My father took a literal step back, completely losing his Alpha composure.
I took off my sunglasses, tossing them carelessly onto a silver tray by the door. I looked at the people who had destroyed my life, feeling nothing but the thrilling supremacy of a predator stepping into a room full of prey.
"Hello, Father," I purred, my voice dripping with icy elegance, echoing in the dead, stunned silence of the hall. "I heard the Bennett family was expecting a disgrace. I hope I haven't disappointed you."
