Reborn from Betrayal: The Scientist's Reckoning

Author: : Paula Gardini
Genre: Modern
Ellie Vance, a brilliant scientist, thought she had it all: a groundbreaking research project nearing completion, and a loving fiancé, Ethan. Her engagement party was supposed to be the celebration of a perfect future. But then, the world stopped. At her own party, Ethan announced he was marrying her cousin, Vicky Croft. And in front of everyone, Vicky unveiled Ellie' s life' s work, presenting it as her own. Ellie' s protests were met with dismissals, even from her own brother, Leo. As Ellie' s world spiraled into grief and disbelief, Vicky' s insidious cruelty secretly targeted Ellie' s ailing mother, accelerating her decline and ultimately leading to her death. Ellie was emotionally and physically broken, effectively "dead." The injustice burned. How could they flaunt her stolen work and celebrate their deceit, while her mother suffered and died from their malice? The betrayal was absolute, leaving Ellie with nothing but shattered dreams and a profound sense of wrong. Yet, a casual, cruel confession from Vicky changed everything. Overhearing her gloating about tormenting Ellie's mother and effortlessly stealing her research ignited a cold, steel resolve. The naive girl was gone. Now, Ellie would attend the grand gala celebrating Vicky, not as a victim, but as a force reborn, ready to unleash a reckoning and expose every single lie.

Introduction

Ellie was emotionally and physically broken, effectively "dead."

The injustice burned.

Chapter 1

The invitation lay on the polished mahogany table. Eleanor "Ellie" Vance stared at it. "The Annual Foundation Gala," it read, "Celebrating Ms. Veronica Croft's Achievements."

Achievements. Ellie' s achievements.

A coldness spread through her, familiar now. It had been her companion for months, ever since the day her world shattered.

The memory was sharp, a shard of glass in her mind.

Her engagement party. Laughter, champagne, the warmth of her fiancé Ethan Holloway' s hand in hers. He was handsome, ambitious, from a new-money family eager to merge with the Vance old-money prestige. She had been so proud, so trusting. Her groundbreaking research paper was almost ready for submission.

Then Ethan had stood up, his voice smooth, cutting through the joyful noise.

"A change of plans," he' d announced, a charming smile on his face. He wasn't marrying Ellie. He was marrying her cousin, Vicky Croft.

Vicky, who had lived with them since she was a child, always in Ellie's shadow. Vicky, now beaming beside Ethan, radiant and triumphant.

And then the second blow. Vicky, her voice sweet, announced her major breakthrough – Ellie' s research, presented as her own.

Ellie had protested, her voice thin against the sudden shocked silence. "That's my work."

Ethan had looked at her, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. "Ellie, don't make a scene."

Her younger brother, Leo, whom she had practically raised, stepped forward. He put an arm around Vicky.

"Ellie, Vicky showed me her notes weeks ago. You must be confused. Maybe the stress of Mom..."

Her mother. Ailing. Ellie had been juggling her care, her research, wedding plans.

The room had spun. The betrayal from Ethan, from Vicky, from Leo... it was too much. She remembered a sharp pain in her chest, then blackness.

Her "death," she called it now. A complete collapse, emotional and physical. Weeks lost in a haze of doctors and quiet rooms.

While she was lost, her mother had faded, her decline hastened by Vicky' s calculated cruelty, whispers Ellie only pieced together later. Her mother died.

Now, Ellie was "reborn." The naivety was gone, burned away. In its place, a steel resolve.

She picked up the invitation. Ethan and Vicky. Celebrating.

Ethan. He knew. He remembered everything, their life before, her devotion. He was "reborn" too, in that way. He knew what Vicky was. Yet he chose this.

He would be at the Gala, watching Vicky be celebrated for lies. He' d probably expect Ellie to have faded away, broken.

He was wrong.

Ellie learned that Ethan and Vicky were already making appearances, building anticipation for the Gala. There was a smaller, preliminary donor reception tonight at the City Arts Club.

Ethan would be there. Vicky would be there.

Ellie would be there too.

Chapter 2

The City Arts Club buzzed with polite conversation and the clinking of glasses. Ellie moved through the crowd, a ghost from their past. She saw Ethan across the room, schmoozing with a university trustee. He looked different. More polished, harder. He hadn' t seen her yet.

Her father, Arthur Vance, found her first. He looked worried.

"Ellie, are you sure about this? Perhaps it's too soon."

"Too soon for what, Father? To reclaim what's mine?"

"I just don't want you to be hurt further. They're... they seem very confident." He thought she was here to make a desperate plea, to cause a scene born of heartbreak. He misunderstood.

"Their confidence is built on theft and lies, Father. It won't last."

He sighed, unconvinced but not stopping her.

Then Ethan saw her. His eyes widened almost imperceptibly. He excused himself and walked towards her, a practiced, charming smile fixed on his face.

"Ellie. What a surprise. I... I didn't expect to see you out."

"Why not, Ethan? Am I supposed to hide forever?"

He lowered his voice. "Look, I know this is... awkward. Vicky is the star now. She' s brilliant. Maybe there' s a small role for you, something supportive. People would admire your grace."

A role. Supporting the thief who stole her life' s work and helped kill her mother. The arrogance was breathtaking.

"I'm not looking for a supporting role in my own life, Ethan."

Before he could reply, a familiar, honeyed voice drifted from a nearby alcove. Vicky.

"...and Mother Eleanor, well, she was always so fragile. A few home truths, kindly delivered of course, and she just... gave up. Made things much simpler. And Ellie' s project? Honestly, it was practically lying there. She was too busy being devoted to Ethan, bless her naive heart. It barely needed any changes."

Ellie froze. The casual cruelty, the open admission.

Ethan, seeing Ellie' s face, followed her gaze to Vicky, then back to Ellie. He didn't hear what Vicky said. He saw Ellie' s stare.

He stepped closer, his voice a low hiss. "Are you here to harass Vicky? She' s been through enough. She' s innocent in all this, a genuine talent. Can' t you accept that she won?"

Ellie looked at him, truly looked at him. The man she thought she loved was a stranger, or perhaps, he was always this man, and she had been blind.

"Innocent? Talent?" A bitter laugh almost escaped her.

Her objective sharpened. It wasn' t just about her work anymore. It was about her mother. It was about the truth. All of it.

The Foundation Gala. That would be the stage.
