CHLOE HAYES POV:
"Once this stupid bitch stops breathing, I want you to take me right on that outlaw President's bed... okay?"
A venomous, sweet voice echoed in the abandoned warehouse. My so-called "best friend," Cherie Frost, giggled. Her sharp stiletto heel was casually grinding into my kneecap-the same kneecap that had just been shattered into pieces by a baseball bat.
I lay in a pool of my own blood on the cold concrete floor, trembling in agonizing pain.
"Anything for my queen," Blaze Golden-the man I had loved for three years, the man I had betrayed my own marriage for-chuckled, pulling her into his arms. He looked down at me, his eyes filled with nothing but sickening disgust, as if looking at a piece of rotting trash. "If she hadn't been so blindly obsessed with me, how could we have tricked her into betraying her husband? Right now, Axel Beaumont, that invincible gang President, is probably being shot to pieces on the interstate."
My heart stopped. The truth was a rusty, serrated blade violently twisting in my gut.
Axel Beaumont. The man who had forced me to be his "Old Lady," the man I had spent the last two years cursing and trying to escape.
"You... you used me to kill him?" I choked out, coughing up thick, dark blood.
"He's a monster, but his fatal flaw was actually giving a shit about a worthless traitor like you," Blaze sneered, kicking my bleeding hand away with his heavy boot. He turned to the tattooed Vipers MC bikers waiting in the shadows. "Strip her. Fuck her until she stops breathing. Don't let this pretty skin go to waste."
As the bikers unbuckled their belts with sickening grins, a wave of sheer terror and nausea hit me. I closed my eyes in absolute despair.
I was such a blind, pathetic fool. I betrayed my own husband and stole his club's secrets for Blaze. I emptied every penny of my bank accounts for Cherie. I gave my entire heart to these two animals, only to have my legs shattered and be thrown to bottom-feeder thugs as a toy!
Suddenly, the deafening roar of a Harley-Davidson engine shattered the night.
The warehouse doors exploded inward.
My eyes widened in absolute shock.
It was him. Axel Beaumont.
He was covered in blood, his body riddled with bullet holes from the ambush, yet he charged into the warehouse like a furious, protective beast. He gunned down the three Vipers before they could even blink.
"Axe..." I choked out, a soul-tearing wave of guilt and agony crashing over me. Why? Why would you come to save a traitor like me?
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Blaze stepped out from the shadows, firing a submachine gun directly at Axe's back.
"No!" I shrieked.
Axe didn't dodge. He collapsed forward, using his massive, bleeding frame to completely shield my broken body from the hail of bullets. Warm blood poured from his mouth, dripping onto my cheek.
His rough, oil-stained hand, trembling violently, used the very last ounce of its strength to tightly intertwine with my cold fingers.
"Don't be afraid..." he wheezed, his vision fading, yet his eyes remained fiercely locked onto mine. There was no hatred for my betrayal, only a devastating, unconditional tenderness. "I love you... my Old Lady..."
His hand went limp. The undisputed King of the Outlaw world died on top of me, in a filthy warehouse, all because of my stupidity.
"Send her to hell with him," Blaze ordered coldly.
As the cold muzzle of the gun pressed against my forehead, a tidal wave of monstrous hatred and soul-crushing regret swallowed me. Blaze, Cherie... if there is a hell, I will tear you both apart with my bare hands!
Bang!
"Chloe, what the hell is so good about Blaze Golden that you'd rather die than stay with me?!"
A harsh, furious roar struck my ears like thunder.
I gasped violently, my eyes snapping open.
I wasn't in the warehouse. There was no stench of blood. Instead, the sharp, clean scent of tobacco, leather, and mint aftershave flooded my senses.
My wrists were pinned above my head against a cold wall. A massive, muscular body was pressing me down, suffocatingly close.
I blinked through my tears and looked up. A flawless, fiercely handsome face glared down at me. His jaw was clenched tight, and his dark brown eyes were a violent storm of anger and devastation. Axel.
The pain in my wrists was sharp. The heat radiating from his chest was real. My legs... they weren't broken.
I'm not dead. I am reborn!
This was a year ago. The night I had packed my bags to elope with Blaze, only to be caught by Axe.
"Stop looking at me with that pathetic face!" Axe growled, his voice a freezing blade, misinterpreting my shock for fear. "You are my wife. Even if I have to break your legs, you are never leaving this clubhouse!"
He released my wrists abruptly, stepping back as if my touch disgusted him. He turned around, preparing to leave me alone in the room, just like in my past life.
Just as he took a step toward the door, I lunged forward with everything I had. I wrapped my arms tightly around his solid waist from behind, burying my tear-stained face into his broad back.
His massive body instantly froze into stone.
CHLOE HAYES POV:
My arms were wrapped desperately around his solid waist. I pressed my tear-soaked face against his broad, muscular back, trembling uncontrollably.
For a split second, Axel's massive body turned to stone.
But it was only for a second.
"Get your fucking hands off me!" he snarled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through his chest.
He didn't gently pry my hands away. He grabbed my wrists with brutal force and forcefully tore me off him, shoving me backward. I stumbled, my bare feet slipping on the hardwood floor, barely catching myself before hitting the ground.
He spun around to face me. The dark brown eyes that had looked at me with such devastating tenderness before he died in the warehouse were now filled with absolute frost and biting mockery.
"What is this, Chloe? A new trick?" Axel took a step toward me, his towering frame casting a suffocating shadow over me. "Crying, screaming, starving yourself... none of that worked. So now you're throwing yourself at me? Are you trying to use your body to buy your way out of this clubhouse?"
His words were like slaps to my face, but I couldn't blame him. In my past life, I had used every vile, disgusting method to force him to let me go to Blaze. I had treated his love like garbage.
"No, Axe... I don't want to leave..." I shook my head frantically, tears streaming down my face.
I looked at his bare chest. Right over his heart was the massive Redwood Originals President insignia. And just below his collarbone, a faded bullet scar-a scar he had gotten while protecting me from a rival gang a year ago.
My heart twisted in agony. I took a step forward, ignoring his lethal glare, and gently placed my trembling hand over that scar.
I felt his abdominal muscles instantly clench tight.
"I don't want a divorce. I don't want to leave," I whispered, looking up into his dark, stormy eyes. I stood on my toes and pressed my lips against his tightly shut, cold mouth.
I had no experience. In my past life, I had fought him like a feral cat every time he touched me. My kiss was clumsy, desperate, tasting of my tears and my profound regret.
I could smell the mint and tobacco on his breath. For a terrifying moment, he didn't move. Then, I heard a low, involuntary groan tear from his throat. His large hand grabbed the back of my neck, holding me in place as his mouth opened, ready to devour me.
But just as the kiss was about to deepen, his body went rigid. He tore his mouth away from mine and pushed me back, his breathing heavy, his eyes burning with a mix of dark lust and intense self-loathing.
"Do you think I'm a fool?" he gritted his teeth, his chest heaving. "Save your cheap seduction."
He turned away, grabbing his cut-the heavy leather vest with the President patch-and roughly shoved his arms through it. He was putting on his armor against me.
Knock, knock, knock.
The sudden sound shattered the heavy tension in the room.
"Prez," a respectful voice called out from the hallway. It was a Prospect. "Breakfast is ready. Also, Mrs. Wallace asked if the Old Lady still wants the pink silk sheets and the floral curtains changed today?"
Pink silk. Floral curtains. The ridiculous, nauseatingly sweet style I had forced upon this gritty, masculine room in my past life, just to annoy him.
Axel didn't look at me. He walked toward the door to dismiss the Prospect, clearly eager to escape my presence.
"Wait," I called out, my voice surprisingly steady.
Axel paused, his hand on the doorknob, his back stiff.
I walked past him and pulled the door open, facing the stunned Prospect. "Tell Mrs. Wallace to throw all that pink garbage into the incinerator. Strip this room of everything that belongs to my old taste. From now on, this room will be decorated purely in black and leather... exactly to the President's liking."
The Prospect's jaw dropped. He stared at me as if I had grown a second head. I, the spoiled brat who screamed at the sight of leather, was submitting to the club's style?
I turned to look at Axel. His eyes were narrowed, a flicker of genuine shock piercing through his icy exterior.
"Yes... yes, Old Lady!" the Prospect stammered, quickly bowing and scurrying away.
Axel stared at me, his jaw clenching. He was trying to decipher my angle. "If you think playing the obedient wife will make me drop my guard-"
Before he could finish his sentence, the walkie-talkie clipped to his belt crackled to life.
It was Alfred, the club's Treasurer. His voice was crisp and urgent. "Prez. We have a situation at the main gate. Blaze Golden is outside. He's screaming, saying he desperately needs to see Chloe. He won't leave."
Blaze Golden.
The name dropped into the room like a live grenade.
The shock in Axel's eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a murderous, blood-chilling darkness. He slowly turned his head to look at me, his lips curling into a smile that made my blood run cold.
"So," Axel whispered, stepping toward me like an apex predator cornering its prey. "That's what the tears and the kiss were for. Stalling for time so your little rat could make a scene at my gate."
AXEL BEAUMONT POV:
"Prez... Blaze Golden is outside..."
Alfred's voice from the walkie-talkie was a rusty knife plunging directly into my chest.
I looked at the woman standing in front of me. Just seconds ago, her soft lips were trembling against mine. Her tears had almost made me lower my defenses. I had actually, for a pathetic, fleeting moment, believed that she wanted to stay.
What a fucking joke.
The sudden change in room decor, the desperate hug, the clumsy kiss... it was all a perfectly timed distraction. She knew her lover was coming to the gate, and she needed to keep me occupied so he wouldn't be shot on sight.
A surge of volcanic, destructive fury erupted in my veins.
I lunged forward and pinned her against the heavy oak door. My large hand wrapped around her delicate throat-not tight enough to choke her, but enough to let her feel the lethal danger she had just awakened.
"You played me," I growled, my face inches from hers. I could see the panic flashing in her beautiful eyes. "You threw yourself at me just to protect that piece of trash? Do you really think I won't kill him?"
"No! Axe, listen to me!" Chloe's eyes widened, her hands grabbing my wrist. "It's not what you think! I didn't know he was coming!"
"Save your breath!" I roared, the pain in my chest morphing into pure cruelty. "I gave you everything! My name, my protection, my fucking heart! And you treat it like dirt for a coward who wouldn't last five seconds in my world!"
I released her throat in disgust, stepping back. I reached for the walkie-talkie on my belt, my thumb hovering over the button. "I'm going to have the Enforcer drag him into the basement. I'll make you watch as I peel his skin off-"
Before I could press the button, Chloe lunged forward, her small hands snatching the walkie-talkie right out of my grip.
"Chloe, give that back before I-"
Chloe pressed the talk button, her eyes locked fiercely onto mine.
When she spoke into the device, her voice wasn't the trembling tone of a spoiled girl. It was cold, sharp, and dripping with venom.
"Alfred, this is the Old Lady," she commanded, her voice echoing clearly through the club's frequency. "Listen to me carefully. I will never see that piece of trash. Tell the Enforcer to throw him in the ditch. If he ever shows his face within a hundred yards of this clubhouse again... shoot him on sight."
Dead silence echoed over the radio.
I stared at her, my mind completely blank.
A few seconds later, Alfred's shocked voice crackled back. "Uhh... copy that, Old Lady. It will be done."
Chloe tossed the walkie-talkie onto the bed. She walked right up to me, tilting her chin up, her chest heaving.
"Is that proof enough for you?" she asked, her voice cracking slightly, revealing the raw emotion beneath her tough facade. "I am Axel Beaumont's wife. I don't want him. I want you."
My heart pounded against my ribs like a jackhammer. Every instinct in my body was screaming to pull her into my arms, to bury my face in her neck, and to never let her go.
But the scars she had left on my soul were too deep. Trust in the Outlaw world wasn't rebuilt with one dramatic order.
I reached out and grabbed the back of her head, my fingers tangling in her soft hair. I pulled her face up and crushed my mouth against hers.
It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was a punishing, aggressive invasion. I plundered her mouth, tasting the tears that had fallen on her lips, marking my territory with savage desperation. She whimpered, her hands clutching my leather cut, her body melting against mine.
God, she tasted like heaven. She was my absolute ruin.
I tore myself away from her, both of us gasping for air. Her lips were swollen, her eyes dazed and completely surrendered to me.
"Words are cheap in our world, Chloe," I whispered hoarsely, my thumb roughly wiping a tear from her cheek. "You want to be my Old Lady? You want to prove you're not playing another game?"
I turned around and grabbed the door handle.
"Then keep proving it."
