Elara Whitmore had sacrificed so much, so much that she didn't remember anymore.
Her parents showered her younger sister with love. Their actions were the opposite for her.
"Our properties will be under your younger sister's name in the future. You can already earn money now. Don't expect us to give you anything."
What properties are you talking about? The house, the car, all the furniture and everything inside the house were bought using her money!
"We have raised you, so it's only natural that you pay us back."
They said those words with such arrogance and disdain that sometimes she wondered if she was their child at all. Otherwise, how could she and her sister have such a different fate?
She was the one who washed dishes, cooked, cleaned, and did every household chore. As soon as she reached adolescence, she was forced to find a living outside too, barely giving her any food unless she paid for them.
Being starved was like a daily routine, and she would scavenge outside. If she stole bread from the kitchen, they would hit her until she bled.
Her bedroom was a small, cramped room, with only a small bed. It looked more like a warehouse than a bedroom. Ah, the room was actually big, but she lived with a lot of things inside.
On the other hand, her sister lived like a princess. If she ever got a minor cut, their parents would feel so stressed that their hearts would ache.
They said that they did this because she made her grandma fall sick, but what could a child actually do?
For her fiance. He was once such an affectionate man that someone who was so starved for love like her longed for him too much.
"I actually prefer your sister. Can't you notice that?"
Elara noticed, of course, but she was too stupid that she interpreted his coaxing words literally and believed them.
"Don't worry, Elara. I only treat Eleanor as my younger sister. I also have a younger sister at home... I only like you."
He was so attentive to Eleanor, only caring for her at the expense of his fiancee. It was too late when she realized he didn't truly like her and had been waiting to get rid of her. He only treated her like a maid to please Eleanor.
He would say. Eleanor needs this or that. When it came to their career paths, which were similar in the entertainment industry, he even made her block some nasty rumors for Eleanor's sake.
The result? She became a hated minor actress who had no popularity, only notoriety. People came to her social media only to scold her.
If it were a story, Eleanor was like a protagonist with the endless fortune of the world given to her, while she was a female supporting character. She was someone who was bound to be a stepping stone for her.
Eleanor not only has the parents' affection and her fiance but also snatched credits for all she had done. Her creative works, and even people she has saved in the past, had named her as her savior.
Now, after she decided to break all contact with her family and went her own way, they still didn't let go of her.
Out of their endless schemes, she couldn't escape this one.
They hired some thugs to kidnap her, brought her to some countryside area, and tortured her.
The bone in her left arm was already broken. Numerous lacerations decorated her skin.
Just yesterday, those kidnappers had held a video call showing off their work toward the culprit who initiated all of this, Eleanor.
The younger girl had delicate makeup all over her face. Her chin was held up high, showing the arrogance between her brows. She called out in a mocking tone. "Older sister."
"How did you end up in such a state?" It was followed by a giggle. The kidnappers, whose appearance resembled thugs, also copied what she did and laughed loudly.
"Are you satisfied with our work, Miss Eleanor?"
Elara was bound tightly on her feet and hands. Her mouth was gagged and her eyes looked like they could kill. Dirt had gotten to some parts of her skin since the room was full of dust. It looked like an abandoned building.
"If you can do what I order you next, I will double your payments..." Eleanor said with an innocent smile that could fool people. "Are you willing?"
"Just say it, Miss Eleanor. Whatever it is, we will do it," One kidnapper hurriedly replied. A greedy look formed on his face, and his friends also nodded in agreement.
"Sister, because you have given me so much. I got all the credit for your creative works, your fiance, and help from the people you had saved. Now it's time to repay you back." There was a sinister look in her eyes that destroyed Eleanor's face. The innocent look was gone.
She spat out an order to the kidnapper, pointing at the camera. "I will give you all an order every day. For today, break her fingers."
Elara felt an excruciating pain. People grabbed her fingers and broke them one by one. She couldn't even scream and struggled. Tears pooled in her eyes, but she forcefully held them back, not wanting to give the feeling of satisfaction to Eleanor.
After they finished, she gasped. Someone even added a kick to her feet, leaving a bruise.
"Tomorrow, break that hand."
When the video call process started again, they broke her hand in front of Eleanor the next day. She always gave orders and told them what to do the day before. The goal was to give a feeling of anxiety to Elara.
It was extremely diabolical.
They also didn't give any food or drink to Elara, making her starved for almost two days.
On the third day, she had told them to disfigure her. Unexpectedly, before the disfigurement process started, there was another guest in Eleanor's video.
It was Mason Reed, Elara's former fiance.
It was no surprise that this man was involved in all of this. He and Eleanor were perfect for each other, possessing the same crooked moral value and unpleasant personality.
"Darling, look, that's your former fiancee." Eleanor made an exaggerated tone and expression.
Mason scowled. "Don't say such a thing. I am disgusted to be reminded that I have ever been in a relationship with her. I only like you!"
"Of course." Eleanor finger's traced Mason's face.
Elara closed her eyes, resisting the urge to vomit at the sight. She was extremely weak right now and couldn't afford to be weakened further.
"Open her gag. I want to hear her voice," Eleanor suddenly spoke.
The kidnappers move and released the cloth from Elara's mouth. Elara opened her eyes, but she didn't speak.
"Don't you have any question now? Just ask." She muttered in an arrogant tone, her hands crossed on her chest. Her chin lifted and lips curved up slightly. "Tomorrow, no need to send me the video call. Just record it and send the videos to me."
Elara's eyes looked like they could spit fire. She blamed herself for being too naïve. However, it all had turned like this now.
"Even after you destroyed everything, why don't you let me go?" Her voice was raspy. She almost didn't recognize her own voice.
"Oh?" Eleanor tilted her head. "It's because you have taken what's supposed to be sister Victoria's."
Victoria Hayes, the heiress of the Hayes family. Instead of inheriting the business her family had prepared for her, she ran off to the entertainment industry to play.
She remembered it now. In the last audition for the casting of the main female protagonist, she had unexpectedly passed it despite her terrible reputation. Victoria Hayes also joined in the audition. It was said that she coveted this role for a long time because of the screenwriter.
The famous screenwriter, Alana Wilson, had made a comeback on a new project after she had returned from overseas with her husband.
This movie was bound to make Victoria more successful if she could get her hands on the major role. Unexpectedly, she used such a dirty means to get it now.
"Is that all?" Eleanor raised her eyebrows. "I am getting bored here."
She lazily propped her face with her hand. "Want to see something interesting, Darling?"
Mason's eyes shone with a strange light. His eyes were slightly squinted, but he was expressionless when he replied to Eleanor. "Of course."
"Do it now. Disfigure her." Eleanor's order came out of her mouth coldly.
The kidnappers shuddered slightly. This woman was such a devil, but she paid them handsomely and never late in doing so. So, they did what they supposed to do.
One of them grabbed a knife, the other a pair of scissors. The moment that cold steel of the scissors plunged to her cheek, splattering blood, Elara suddenly stood up.
She grabbed the knife from the man's hand and stabbed one of them. The momentary shock gave them no time to react as she snatched the other weapon and flung it at the man's head.
Then, she ran off the building, trudging the hard ground barefoot. Some jagged rocks already pierced into her skin, and from behind, she heard Eleanor's wretched voice screaming madly. "Chase after her. Don't let that bitch escape or you all will know the consequence!"
The remaining three people chased after her, cursing.
Elara was in complete despair now. There were no houses in sight, and it all looked like a forest. They were in the middle of nowhere.
But she didn't want to be humiliated like that anymore.
With her firm resolve that wavered slightly because of her grandmother, she slowly apologized to her.
The kidnappers had already caught up to her, and she was completely cornered. However, the moment they were about to grab onto her, she also grabbed into two of them. She used the weight of her body and them being surprised to join her going down there.
She jumped off the cliff, but at least she wasn't alone.
In a while, she was submerged in a world of excruciating pain and then complete darkness.
Elara looked unfazed when she saw the hand of her fiance, Mason Reed, snaked around Eleanor's behind to her left arm. Eleanor was leaning against him, hugging his waist. They were watching some movies on television on a sofa.
When they noticed Elara coming out of her room, only then did they behave themselves, hurriedly entangle from each other's limbs.
"Sister, I and Mason are watching movies together," she said in her sickly sweet voice.
It made her nauseous.
"You don't mind, right?" She pursed her lips in a pitiful tone.
"What if I mind?" Elara asked back flatly.
The next scene was all too familiar. Mason jumped up to defend Eleanor like she was his beloved. He frowned in disapproval. "Elara, since when are you acting like this? You have to be generous. After all, she is your younger sister. She will also be my younger sister in the future."
Since I died and come back to life. Elara answered in her heart.
That humiliation, the pain like her soul, was being pulled out of her body. They were as clear as the day. They had betrayed her for an outsider, but considering their crooked personality, was that a surprise anymore? It was that it was too bad she hadn't known about it sooner.
It was her fault for believing in them too much under the banner of 'family'.
Fire was burning in her heart, and she forcefully held herself back. Now wasn't the time...
She would do it slowly, making them losing what they love the most in this world would be more painful.
"I am just joking." Elara suddenly laughed. "Why are you two so tense?"
Her gaze flitted to Mason. "Am I such a person in your eyes?"
Mason suddenly swallowed and didn't know what to say for a moment. He just gritted his teeth and said, "Of course not."
"If I am not such a person, then why such a harsh tone? I will be hurt if you always defend my sister in front of me too, Mason." She had tears brimming in her eyes, but they didn't fall down. Her lips also quivered and the combination of her trembling eyelashes brought a pitiful look on her face.
Eleanor wasn't the only one who was an aspiring actress here. Oh, it can be said that only Elara was the actress. She used her skill to the maximum at this moment.
After she had regressed in time, coming back to the time where she was still alive and engaged to Mason, the first thing she did was to list all the things they did to her. She spent a sleepless night thinking about the countermeasure.
It was too unbelievable, which seemed like a dream from a faraway future. Nonetheless, she was forced to believe it when she found that things began to make sense.
No wonder that Eleanor and Mason always acted so closely, even under the banner of naming each other sister and brother. They had such a relationship in secret.
She wouldn't be surprised if she was someone the Whitmore family picked along the way, too.
It wasn't that Elara didn't realize it. She was too busy for her to care too much. Her first priority was always her career, where she could make income for her livelihood.
Otherwise, she wouldn't survive in this home that treated her as a stranger. Now, she had even begun to pay rent if she wanted to live here.
Mason looked befuddled, watching the usually taciturn and stern woman turned like this. Her occasional indifferent expression made him resent her a little. Eleanor was more lively, but now...
He felt a strange sensation in his heart and then jumped out of the sofa. His tone softened slightly. "I didn't mean it. It's my fault that my tone was so harsh, but don't worry, I will never do that again."
Elara avoided his touch, inwardly frowning. He was quite eloquent at coaxing people. Too bad that most of his words were empty; he couldn't be trusted.
Especially because one of the people in front of her right now had plotted something against her. Or maybe both of them were working together. They would do it as soon as she stepped out of the house.
If not for her grandfather making such ridiculous decisions like engaging small babies between the two families, she wouldn't be involved with this Mason at all.
It was also funny how she used to think that this man was the savior who would bring her out of her misery someday. He wasn't. Her savior was only herself.
Eleanor's eyes flashed with open discontent. Her tone was a bit strained. "Alright, sister still needs to go to the audition. Don't be late."
Elara had come to terms with her own feelings. She didn't like this man anymore and never will. Not in this second chance lifetime that God had given her.
So, she had no qualms at all if this younger sister wanted this trashy man for herself. But of course, it wouldn't be fun if she didn't play with them for a little.
Enduring the discomfort, she suddenly hugged Mason. The move shocked the man, yet he gradually recovered his senses and hugged the woman back.
From her peripheral vision, she could even see the blazing eyes of Eleanor, obviously burning with jealousy.
Then she abruptly released Mason, making him feel a bit at a loss. "Thank you, Mason. Now, I feel a bit better."
She wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes, not letting it ruin her makeup. The act further softened Mason's heart. Elara showing such a vulnerability seemed like a fresh sight for him.
A slight satisfaction filled her heart. Watching Eleanor grit her teeth and her eyes burning with fury. What a wonderful sight.
"I'll go now. Wish me luck for the audition." Elara muttered, silently scrutinizing him.
He had a brief look of hesitation. In the end, he only quietly said with a conflicted look on his face. "Be careful on the way."
Elara's eyes grew colder, but her tone was soft. "I will. Enjoy watching movies with my sister."
With that, she turned around and left the room, noticing the smirk that Eleanor shot toward her before she went out.
Sure enough, it was them.
The moment Elara stepped into the building, she was somewhat at a loss. She subconsciously followed the route she took in her previous life.
Only this time, she stumbled upon someone because of a loss of footing.
Someone caught her in time so she didn't sprain her ankle. When she looked up, she was expecting some thug-looking man dragging her away.
She had prepared for the countermeasure she had thought about the night before.
Still, nervousness gripped her heart.
She just didn't expect that when she lifted her head, she would come face to face with the most good-looking man she had ever seen.
"Careful there, Lady."
Elara couldn't help but dazed off when she remembered that man's appearance. He was really so good looking that one would think God had spent more time carving out his features.
He was really tall. When she stood to her full height, she could only reach his nose. His pair of powerful arms had helped her to regain his footing.
How cliche. Elara couldn't help but mused. Even for a minor actress like her who had read a lot of scripts, it was a cliche meeting. However, no matter how good looking he was, it was no longer relevant to her.
They probably wouldn't meet again.
It was just that she found it strange. She had followed the exact route she had taken in her previous life. There wasn't that man there, nor his car. The place seemed to be a parking lot reserved for certain people.
Because she hadn't even managed to attend the audition in her past life, she didn't know where the audition place was. She had to fumble around, and at the same time on high alert in case those thugs came looking for trouble with her again.
Her memory was a bit fuzzy, even if it was the life she had experienced once.
After that man left, she met the unexpected scene in her past life again.
Someone fell as soon as he stepped out of his car, unconscious. He landed perfectly near her feet. There was none else in the area since the man earlier had left. It still made her panic, but she told herself to be calm.
"Sir, are you okay?"
As soon as she blurted out the words, she cursed her stupidity. Of course, this man wasn't okay. She hurriedly called the ambulance and brought him to the hospital.
"I will bring you to the hospital." Elara said, as if the man could hear her.
She had just experienced the most unbelievable thing a day ago and didn't have much time to sort out her thoughts. There were many details that she had also forgotten; her memory wasn't that good.
However, looking at the face of this man who was lying on the hospital bed, she couldn't help but find him familiar. He looked so young, probably only a few years older than her.
The exhaustion on his face was very clear.
Oh, the more she looked, the more this man's figure overlapped with a famous director. So, this was how he looked in his early years; he seemed to still possess the spirit of a young man, lacking the maturity and steadiness he would have in his later years.
Currently, he wasn't that famous yet, but he should have joined the rank of the rising directors.
With her accomplishments as a minor actress in her previous life, it was impossible to meet such a figure. She couldn't even land a job in some less popular films. Besides, the films he directed would always receive significant popularity.
There was one point that made Elara remember this man so much; he was one of Eleanor's suitors.
He even confessed that he found her as a heartwarming person. All because she had saved him once. Tsk, this man really could say anything. He just hadn't had the chance to take a glimpse at the girl's viper heart.
One point was worth pondering. He said that Eleanor saved him. But when...?
She suddenly had an outrageous conjecture.
Before she could mull over it further, she heard the ringtone of someone calling through her phone. Her lips curled up, feeling slightly funny inside.
"Sister, where are you?" Eleanor's voice rang out from the other side as soon as she picked up.
"Somewhere, I am not sure..." She made a sigh, with a hint of frustration in her voice.
There was a brief silence before Eleanor asked her again. "Did you get lost somewhere, sister?"
"I think so. I don't know where I am," Elara muttered in annoyance.
She managed to recall some details she had forgotten now. At this time, when Eleanor called her, she told her honestly that she was in a hospital after rescuing a man. When she heard that she was accompanying him, Eleanor reminded her of the audition.
Elara left before the man woke up, because she was afraid that she might be late for the audition.
Eleanor must have come here, and after the man woke up, he mistook her as his savior. Elara couldn't help but click her tongue. It was no wonder that Eleanor quickly surpassed her in the entertainment industry. She managed to land her first big job because of him.
"Sister, are you still there? Are you alright? Talk to me!" Eleanor's loud voice came from the phone again, making her wince. Her voice was slightly shrilly.
"I am still here. Sorry, I almost stumbled on some rock." Elara said, curious what this 'good' sister of hers would say next.
"Then you should be careful. Order a taxi or something so you won't be late for your audition." Eleanor made a suggestion. "Stay safe, sister."
Elara said some words for reassurance and bid farewell to her. After she hung up the phone, her eyes flickered.
Everything made sense now.
Behind Eleanor's fake concern, it wasn't really a concern. She wanted Elara to go as soon as possible to the place where the audition took place.
Because that was where the show would happen. Eleanor must have been agitated because she hadn't arrived at the show she had meticulously prepared yet.
If that was the case, then she would wait until the man woke up. It made her curious that she wanted to try it as some kind of experiment. What would happen if this man recognized her as the real savior instead of Eleanor?
She wondered whether Eleanor's future in the entertainment industry would still be as smooth as before.
It seemed that Elara had been too deep, mulling over her thoughts. She didn't realize that the man had woken up, probably because of Eleanor's loud voice.
The man was squinting his eyes. The sudden light must have made his eyes uncomfortable. He weakly asked Elara. "Who are you, Miss? Why am I here...?"
