Autumn Dawson stood stiffly at the edge of the dance floor, her hands clenched tightly around her champagne glass. she watched with teary eyes, her husband twirl his new bride, Iris Dawson-her much younger half-sister-across the polished wood.
The twinkling lights above cast a soft glow on their joyous faces, a sharp contrast to the storm brewing in Autumn's chest. For twelve years, she had played the role of his substitute wife, enduring the empty nights and the whispered rumors, only to be cast aside the moment his father passed away. On the very day that marked their twelve-year anniversary, he had married Iris, leaving Autumn to bear witness to a happiness that had never been hers.
Autumn Dawson watched the couple with a heavy heart, her bloodshot eyes tracking every movement as Ivan smiled ear to ear at Iris. That radiant smile was something she had never been granted; Ivan had only ever shown her one expression on that handsome face of his-a cold but an unyielding glare. It was an expression she had grown accustomed to over the years, one that made her feel pathetic no matter how many times she encountered it. She loved Ivan with her whole heart, yet he had never reciprocated her feelings. Throughout their marriage, his scornful hatred had been a constant presence, a stark contrast to the tenderness he now lavished on Iris.
The couple finished dancing, everyone present at the wedding were welcoming the newlyweds. Autumn clapped too as both Ivan and Iris walk over to her.
"Autumn, we're going to be sister wives. Isn't this exciting?" Autumn held her tongue from lashing at her sister, she didn't have a place in scolding Iris and it's always been like this and she blames her parents for enabling Iris behavior. Unlike Autumn, Iris was the golden child. Autumn's own biological mother never wanted her to begin with and always resented her for trapping her in a loveless marriage but when Iris was discovered from her father's affair, they welcomed her with opened arms.
"Autumn are you mad at me?" Autumn return to her senses to see Iris tearing up.
"Are you mad that I stole Ivan from you?" Iris added still sobbing.
"And why would Autumn think that?" Ivan asked in annoyance.
"Because she confronted me before the wedding that I'm stealing you from her." Iris freezes, she didn't even see Iris until the wedding began.
"You really are shameless, not only will you not agree to divorce me but now you want to blame Iris for what is entirely your fault?" Ivan screamed at Autumn as she tries to hold back her tears. There's a reason she didn't accept his divorce proposal but she didn't know how she would reveal to Ivan that she was pregnant.
"But I didn't..."
"Quiet." Ivan scolded her and signalling security to get a hold of Autumn.
"Get her out of my sight." He ordered as two men in black drags her out. Autumn struggled with them as they tried to forcefully take her out and then she saw a familiar expression that she always saw on Iris face, that cunning smirk of victory. Autumn screamed even more until security finally dragged her out of the premise completely.
"Autumn.." She hears her name and turns to see her mother and her father.
"Haven't you done enough to shame the Dawson's name? How much damage will you cause till you're satisfied?" Her mother spat bitterly at her daughter.
"Mom please..." A slap went across her face and she tasted a metallic liquid that spread across her entire mouth, the taste of her own blood. She looked back at her father who gave her the hard slap.
"I'm ashamed of calling you my daughter. How dare you say such things to your sister on her wedding day?" His voice was a harsh whip, each word lashing out at her. "If you weren't my blood, I would have killed you." His yelling intensified, the atmosphere reverberating with his fury.
Autumn's chest tightened, her breaths coming in short, frantic gasps. Her vision blurred, and her world started to spin. Panic clawed at her, making it harder to breathe. The dizziness overwhelmed her, and she felt her legs give way. Her knees buckled, and she crumpled to the floor, the world around her fading to black.
Autumn opens her eyes at the hospital. She heard the familiar sobs that could only belong to Iris. She had a look around just to spot Iris bawling her eyes out. She slowly sits upright as Iris notices Autumn had just awaken.
"Autumn, how could you. Why couldn't you wait till after the wedding to reveal that you're pregnant?" Iris sobbed even harder. Autumn couldn't understand how her sister could not have a single compassion. She couldn't even care that her sister was stripped to a stretcher? She couldn't even imagine that she might had lost her life.
"Abort it Autumn." Iris begs. Autumn furrows her brows and without thinking she slaps Iris. She didn't know when her hand had a mind of it's own, or maybe she's aware that's why she didn't feel any ounce of guilt.
Realizing what she had done she immediately apologizes. "I'm sorry Iris, my hand slipped." Autumn turns her gaze to the other side of the hospital, Iris in shock held her cheek. She was filled with rage.
She wondered when Did her sister start growing balls to commit such an act of it wasn't revealed that she was pregnant she would have returned the favor.
The doors burst open revealing Ivan. Autumn felt as if time had stopped she froze even more at his icy stares. He walks over to Autumn who has her palms over her cheek. Iris looked away avoiding Ivan's gaze.
"Did you slap her?" Ivan asked, spitting venomously. Autumn didn't move, for a moment she felt invincible, not giving Ivan any reaction until her face was greeted with a slap from Ivan. Her ears rang and although it was worse than the one her father gave her, she still manage to get a hold of her senses.
Even at that, it couldn't stop her tears sliding down her cheek.
"Just because you're pregnant you think you're entitled to touch my wife?" Ivan yells as Autumn eyes went bloodshot red. "I am your wife too Ivan." Autumn yelled in her defense.
"When will you accept you were just a substitute. I only married you at my father's whim. Now that he's dead I see no reason why I should be with you." He paused fixing his gaze at her flat tummy and then at her crocodile tears.
"Besides how can I tell that child is even mine. I'm sure it belongs to another bastard." Autumn was shocked, how could Ivan say such a thing.
"You're the only man I've slept with Ivan, what you're spewing is ridiculous." Autumn spits back, she couldn't handle what he was saying anymore, it was breaking her heart.
"Are you calling me a liar?" He raised his hand again but refrains when Iris grabbed on to his wrist.
"Ivan, she's pregnant. You will stress the baby." Iris pouted as Ivan dearly held her gaze. "Why should I care about the bastard, it's not even mine." Ivan said as Iris pleaded with him.
"Even though, the poor child should not suffer for what the mother did. Instead why don't you divorce her from having a affair?" Iris suggested. It was ironic really, Autumn had spent twelve years with Ivan as he disrespected her countless of times and have an affair with her own sister. She forgave him all those times and just when he heard blatant rumors of her affair he just couldn't stand it.
"I did not have an affair, this is your child Ivan. I swear on my life." Autumn mutters as Iris pulls Ivan away from Autumn and whispers something into his ear.
Ivan returns to Autumn, he clears his throat. "I'll have the doctor run a test, if it's mine I'll let you keep your title as my wife but if it isn't mine, our marriage will come to an end." Autumn nodded, she was confident she will be right. After all the last time she had sex with Ivan was solid alibi that it was his.
The doctor conducted the test and immediately the results came back.
Autumn's parents had heard about the reveal, they showed up to hear who owned the child.
The doctor walks in with the results as he reads it out loud. "Mr Ivan, I'm sorry to say but you are not the father."
Ivan could not pinpoint why he was disappointed. He was sure the child wasn't his but he could not understand why he wished it was. He turns to Autumn who laid in shock and immediately his stomach turned. Autumn had finally brainwashed him that he could not help but extend pity towards her. He hated himself for falling for her traps and hated her more for making him feel such a way.
His eyes widened as he glared at the scornful woman in front of him.
"Our marriage ends today, I'll have my lawyers send you the divorce papers." He furiously storms out, followed by the doctor and then Iris.
Autumn was left stunned with her parents, she could not understand how the results were wrong. She turned to them with teary eyes, her throat was burning and her head was aching as she spoke.
"Mom, Dad, believe me, the baby is Ivan's." She cried hoping her parents would take her side but they looked at her in disgust.
"Are you that attention starved that you pulled a stunt like this? After all what Ivan did for you, you had an affair?" Her mother cried, casually breaking into a sob. Autumn heart shattered at her mother's remarks, how could they just believe that she had an affair? they were the one who insulted her relentlessly for not leaving Ivan for Iris. They would call her all sort of names because of her obsession with Ivan, they knew how much she went through because of him, they saw it and all of a sudden they just believed she had an affair?
"Where did we go wrong with you?" Her mother added. Autumn felt her world shaking, her father held her by the collar, violently shaking her.
"Who's the father?" He asked.
"It's Ivan.." a slap went across her face.
"You know what I'll kill you, how dare you lie to my face?" Before her father could pounce on her, her mother used up all her strength to hold Mr Dawson back. Soon the nurses ran in trying to get him out of the room.
"Henceforth you're no longer a Dawson, I regret ever bringing you into this world." Autumn's heart broke. It felt as if she was going crazy.
The results must have been wrong, there's no way the baby was not Ivan's. She got up stripping away the IV drops attached to her and rushed to find the doctor that had conducted the test.
There must have been some kind of defect when he ran the tests. She traced his office but before she could knock she heard the sound of a couple moaning.
She hesitated, the sound soon became familiar until she heard the sound of the woman raising her pitch in excitement.
"Dexter, oh my." Autumn froze, that was none other than Iris.
How did she know the doctor? And what kind of relationship do they have.
"Who's better Iris, me or him." The Doctor rapidly said in an audible groan.
"Dexter please." She squirmed even more. Autumn already prepared herself to barge into them, she can't believe Iris was cheating on Ivan.
Soon the pleasurable sound of their moans died down and soon enough they began having an actual conversation.
"What if she runs another test in another hospital?" Iris seethes in rage, rushing to put her clothes back on.
"Like anyone would believe her, right now she's a slut who cheated on her husband she'll just look desperate, no one will take her seriously." Dexter assured her, quickly dressing up as well.
"Besides if you want you can tell Ivan to have her abort the baby, he'll do anything you say." He suggested as Autumn's heart lept from her chest. She was about to leave until she heard her name being called. She turns to see Ivan who's glare seems more colder than ever.
"What are you doing here?" Ivan asked, she suddenly felt the office become quiet. Suddenly Iris scream erupted the atmosphere and immediately Ivan pushed Autumn out of the way to get to his endangered bride.
He opens the door to see Iris crying. He looks at the doctor and glares at him.
"What did you do to her?" He asked in an icy tone.
Iris flicks away her tears pulling off an angelic feat.
"Ivan, I'm pregnant, you're going to be a father."
