Mabel walked into her home, the home she shared with her husband.
Mabel felt nervous, but also excited. She was just returning from the hospital, and she was back with good news.
Mabel held the envelope in her hands, her face radiant with joy. Her hands trembled slightly while holding on to the envelope, she could not contain her joy.
Her eyes were red with unshed tears, which showed how much she valued the news in the envelope, and how much she could not wait to inform her husband, Alex of the news.
When she arrived home, she frowned. The house was too silent, it was as silent as a graveyard, causing a frown to morph on her face.
"Why is the house this silent? And where are the maids? Why can't I find any of them?" She asked loudly, exhaling through her mouth.
Mabel was confused by the lack of liveliness in the house, which was entirely different from what she was used to.
But she did not think too much into it. She was only concerned about delivering the news to Alex.
As she climbed the stairs, her heart pounded heavily. She wondered how he was going to react to the news, she bet that he was going to be more excited than she was when she found out.
Approaching her room, she suddenly heard strange noises, causing her brows to furrow while her eyes squinted a bit causing her to wonder whether she was hearing things.
Her heart skipped several beats, those noises were familiar to her.
She shook her head in her denial that she might just be hearing things.
Breathing, put a smile on her face, and walked to the room, only for the noises to become louder.
Tears suddenly dropped from her eyes, her entire body convulsed in pain, and her shoulders trembled heavily, and she had no idea why it was so.
Perhaps, she was fearful for what she might see if she got into her room.
Mabel had an idea on what was going on in the room, but she was unwilling to believe that her thoughts could be right.
She suppressed the fears in her heart walking slowly to the room, while praying earnestly that it should be the figment of her imagination.
"Who do you love the most?" Mabel suddenly heard a familiar voice ask her a question, and her eyes widened while gasping for breath.
Her breath momentarily stopped as her hands flew straight to her chest after recognizing the voice.
"Of course, it is you, who else am I supposed to love? You and I know I am just playing her," she heard a reply, and her heart broke as the tears fell heavily from her eyes.
The two people who had just spoken were close to her.
"I cannot believe it, I must be hearing things," she was unable to believe it; thus, she walked to the room with slow steps.
She opened the door slightly and what she saw in the room broke her heart heavily.
Not knowing how she got the strength to open the door, she found herself in the room.
"Alex!" She yelled, and the devil she called husband scrambled the last piece of his dignity with the duvet.
"How could you?" She asked with disbelief all over her face, she could not believe it, and it was even more awful when she found out that the lady her husband was screwing was her secretary.
"Ivy, I never expected this from you, you are sleeping with my husband, is this how you pay me back after everything I had done for you?" Mabel questioned, tears still in her eyes.
Mabel could not wrap her head around everything which was going on, and she began to question where everything went wrong.
"Why did you betray me this way?" Mabel's voice rang out, barely a whisper, tears escaping her eyes, like she was a coward.
"Alex, I thought we were in love, I thought the bond we had between each other was more than enough, then why did you choose to betray me this way?" Her lips quivered as she questioned him, tears still in her eyes.
Mabel could not hold back as she walked to him, questioning him, and at the same time hitting him on the chest, but it was merely a scratch to him.
Alex remained silent, but let her do what she wanted.
Ivy who was on the bed was unable to take it; hence, she exited the bed, walked towards them, and pushed her away from him, causing her to fall to the floor.
Mabel let out a yelp, she had gained a cut on her arm, and she felt a sharp pain in her stomach, prompting her to hold her stomach subconsciously.
"I am sick and tired of your entitled behavior, let me tell you now, Alex never loved you, he was only with you because of the benefits he could get from you, he loves me only, so you need to get that straight," Ivy did not bother mincing her words, telling it straight to her face.
Mabel hung her mouth open in shock as she snapped her head towards Alex, who was averting his gaze from her.
"Tell me it is not true, tell me this is a lie," Wiping the tears away from her eyes, she asked with a beautiful smile on her face, hoping for a positive answer.
"She is lying, right? You love me, you are not playing me, are you?" She stared at him with a hopeful look, praying that he refuted her statements.
"I asked a question, answer me! Did you ever love me?" She yelled with the remaining strength she had in her.
But to her dismay, Alex stared at her with disdain and mockery.
"I did not love you, she is telling the truth, I never loved you, and I will not love you, she is the only one I love," Alex confessed, pulling Ivy close to him.
"Is that so?" Mabel asked as a chuckle escaped her lips. It was filled with pain and sadness.
"Do you know, I was excited to return home today, I just got good news, I was excited to tell you that you will be a father, I was so excited to inform you of my pregnancy, but you ruined it," Mabel rambled with a bitter smile, with tears still rolling down her eyes.
Alex shook slightly as he looked at the lady who was in pain.
'She is pregnant? That means she is pregnant with my step-brother's baby, she doesn't know about that, that baby must die, and she should also, she is not allowed to live,' Alex thought to himself.
'But I should perhaps tell her that she has not been sleeping with me, but my stepbrother,' Alex mused to himself. He looked at the Mabel who was not willing to look up at him, but rather, was still shedding tears.
"Mabel, I have something to say to you," he spoke up, and she looked up at him, wondering what he had to say after all he had done.
"What do you have to say?" She asked, wiping the remnants of her tears away from her eyes.
"Actually, the baby you are carrying isn't mine."
"What do you mean by that? If the baby isn't yours, then who does it belong to?" Mabel cut him off immediately. She felt offended by his words, as she wondered what had gotten into his head.
Alex rolled his eyes at her outburst, he was expecting her to have such a reaction, so he wasn't too bothered about it.
"The baby belongs to my brother, I do not have any connection with the baby," Alex declared without mincing his words.
"The baby you are carrying belongs to my brother, and not me," Alex declared without mincing his words.
Mabel gasped loudly as her hands flew straight to her mouth.
"Y-you are joking, I know you are joking, there is no way this baby belongs to your brother, you are playing games with me, if that is the case, don't do it anymore."
Mabel stuttered at first, before shaking her head in denial. There was no way she was going to believe what he said.
Alex sneered at Mabel. He was annoyed at her foolishness.
"It is the truth, my stepbrother likes you, and we made a deal, why do you think we do not have sex when we are home? Rather, it happens when we are on outings with the homies?" Alex asked with folded arms.
He felt irritated by her presence, and he turned to Ivy who nodded understanding the look in her eyes.
"Listen," Ivy squatted to her level as he held her by the hair tightly, causing Mabel to moan in pain.
"Alex never loved you, the child you are carrying belongs to Ace, do you know the reason for that? Don't worry, I will not tell you," Ivy spat at her as she let go of Mabel's hair.
Tears continued to slip from Mabel's eyes. She would never have realized that she would be betrayed this way.
"Your property is ours, do you know, you have signed the property to me, do you remember when I asked for your signature yesterday,
You trust me so much you did not bother to check what papers they were, it was your property papers," Ivy cackled loudly, and Alex who was by her side also laughed.
"How could you? What did I ever do to you? I will report, I treated you both really well, but you decided to repay me this way, why?" Mabel asked with a tear-streamed face.
"I will send you both to jail," Mabel vowed as she stood to her feet.
She was about to approach the door when she felt a sharp pain in her back.
Her eyes turned limpid immediately as she forced herself to turn back.
Mabel was shocked to see Ivy with a tear-stained knife. She did not need any soothsayer to tell her what had happened.
She had just been stabbed by her secretary. Furthermore, she could feel all the life in her leaving her. Furthermore, she knew she was going to die, but she felt reluctant.
"Ivy, what have you done?" Alex yelled as Mabel fell to the floor.
Ivy chuckled as she circled Mabel who was bleeding.
"I just took care of the obstacle, she was going to report us, we only need to make it look like she committed suicide,
You do not need to be bothered, we have her property with us now, we are rich, and your brother will not be able to bully you anymore, you can rival him now," Ivy explained to Alex who was already thinking about the life he would have with Mabel's money.
Mabel who still had a bit of life in her listened to their words, and she felt detached.
'If ever I have the opportunity to return just like those novels, then I will make your lives a living hell,' she thought to herself, before breathing her last.
********
"Wake up Mabel, it is morning, why are you still in bed? You need to go shopping for your wedding dress," Mabel forced herself to open her eyes.
She squinted as the bright light hit her eyes immediately prompting her to close it .
"Come on, I saw your eyes open, don't trick me, wake up," she heard a very familiar voice which caused her to snap her eyes open immediately.
She sat up straight as her hands immediately touched her back. She frowned feeling no pain in her back.
"What happened to you? Do you have a migraine?" She turned to look at a familiar person, and she swallowed.
"Why are you staring at me that way? You need to go to the tailor to check out your bridal dress, thereafter, you will need to....."
Mabel did not hear anything else after she heard about going to the tailor.
"Kelly, what date is today?" Mabel asked as she tried to suppress the excitement in her heart at the prospect of being reborn.
"What sort of question is that, Mabel?" Kelly was confused by such a question. She thought that maybe it was due to the drinks she took yesterday, which caused her to act this way.
"I just need an answer, can you tell me?" Mabel pleaded.
"Fine fine, today is the 4th of September 2024, are you satisfied?" Kelly asked as she pulled the duvet away from Mabel's body.
Mabel felt cold all of a sudden, not because of the duvet which was removed from her body, rather, because she was stunned by the news.
"I do not want to get married anymore," she blurted out.
"What?" Kelly turned to look at her with wide eyes.
"What? Are you really Mabel? The Mabel I know will kill herself if she does not get married to Alex," Kelly folded her arms as she narrowed her eyes at her.
Mabel scratched her hair. She knew her family members never wanted her to get married to Ace. She was the stubborn one. Now that she had uttered those words, her sister would definitely be surprised.
"Sister, I know that I had crazy tendencies then which caused mom and dad to accept him, but I had a long dream, it was very vivid, and this caused me to realize they Alex could be lying to me," Mabel could only cover up her death and rebirth with a dream.
Kelly had a bright smile on her face as she jumped onto the bed, kissing her sister at the same time.
"I am so glad, this is the best news I have received in the past few months," Kelly kissed her on the cheeks feeling blissful.
"Sister, stop that," Mabel shook her off. She could not deny that she missed this.
Because of Alex, in her past life, she stayed away from her family. Now that she thought about it, she was idiotic to believe Alex.
"Mom, dad, Mabel doesn't want to get married to Alex anymore," Kelly left Mabel's bedroom rushing to her parents' room.
Mabel shook her head with a smile seeing her elder sister's attitude. Her smile wiped off immediately when she recalled what she faced in her past life.
'Alex, Ivy, you both prepare for me,' she balled her hands into fists.
"Mabel, what is this I am hearing? You are not willing to get married to him? Is this for real? You are not playing, are you?" Her mother, Melanie rushed into the room, bombarding her with questions.
Mabel looked at her mom, and tears dropped from her eyes suddenly. And why wouldn't it? She had not seen her mom ever since she got married in her previous life, the emotions she felt were extreme.
"Mom," she called out in a choked voice as she sobbed.
Melanie was clueless as to why her daughter was crying, but she also felt her emotions which prompted tears to fall from her eyes.
Both mother and daughter cried in each other's arms. After crying, Mabel felt better, and she felt relieved.
"Mabel, why did you cry? See you caused my makeup to get smeared," Melanie cracked a joke which lightened the heavy atmosphere.
"I just missed you, that's all," Mabel replied in a coquettish voice.
Melanie's eyes softened as she stared at her daughter who clung to her tightly. Mabel did not want to let go of her.
"Mabel, do you really want to call off your wedding with him? I thought you were madly in love with him, and would not bear to be separated from him," Melanie had a genuine confused look on her face as she stared at her daughter who had a lost look in her eyes.
"Are you listening?" She asked after a few seconds, seeing that she did not get a response.
"Yes, I am," Mabel snapped out of her trance and she breathed out through her mouth.
"Yes mom, I will not be getting married to him, I am breaking off the marriage, now that I think of it, he is not worth it, and besides, I had a long dream, the dream woke me up to his real colors," Mabel replied with a forced smile on her face.
Melanie beamed happily. She was beyond excited that her daughter had finally regained her senses. Like she said, Alex wasn't worth it.
"That is good, I am sure your father will be happy with your decision, and we can probably go ahead with the marriage between you and Ace," Melanie happily blurted out.
"Ace? As in, Ace Cromwell's, the stepbrother of Alex, the heir to the TK Corporation, do you mean that Ace, mom?" Mabel suppressed her anxiety as she questioned her mom.
"Of course, it's that Ace, actually, we have been in talks with him about your marriage with him, but we did not get the chance to tell you when you decided to get married to Alex," Melanie had a depressed look on her face.
Thinking back to it, she felt that it was such a pity. Ace was quite compatible with her daughter, and she liked the fine young man. He was refined and a gentleman.
But her daughter had decided to settle for less. And irrespective of the fact that she found Ace worthy, she could not bear to disagree with her daughter's choice.
"Do you think he is willing to get married to me?" Mabel asked as she played with her fingers.
She did not know if he was still willing to get married to her, but she hoped it was possible.
Now that she thought about it, Alex had mentioned that Ace was the one who always slept with her. She also got pregnant as a result.
She had no idea why Ace would do such a thing.
'He probably liked her,' she thought to herself, but dismissed the idea immediately.
"He is willing, he had specifically told us that if you ever lose interest in Alex, he was still waiting for you," Melanie replied which brought her out of her reverie.
Mabel felt her heart ripple as she listened to her mother's words. She mentally berated herself. She was such a fool.
If she had just broken up with Alex as her parents requested, then she would not have faced major issues. Perhaps, she would not have died.
But perhaps dying and being reborn was a good thing. Now, armed with the memories of her previous life, she was not going to make the same mistakes again.
If she did, she would be damned and her rebirth would have gone to waste.
"Mom, I am ready to marry Ace," Mabel declared with a firm voice.
It was not that she loved Ace, but she felt that Ace would be a good instrument in her revenge.
Melanie smiled widely for the nth time. She had never realized that her daughter's words brought her so much joy.
"Did I just hear about a marriage to Ace, she agreed, yes!" Kelly, who had been at the door immediately, came in with a boisterous voice.
Mabel laughed at her sister's antics, and it only became louder when Kelly jumped onto the bed.
"Mom, is it true? Did you tell her about Ace?" Kelly asked, her eyes twinkling as it darted between her mother and sister.
"Yes, I did, she deserves to know, and luckily, she accepted it," Melanie replied with a beautiful smile on her face.
"Yes! That's wonderful, I bet Ace will be so happy seeing that you have changed your mind, but regardless of anything,
The first thing you need to do is to inform that scumbag called Alex that you are calling the wedding off," Kelly rambled as she already pictured how his face was going to look after finding out that her sister was calling the wedding off.
"Yes sister, sister, can I trouble you to help me inform him, you see, I find it to be disgusting, and I am unwilling to have anything to do with him, please," Mabel pleaded while pouting her lips?
Kelly sighed. She was about to accept when they heard their mother say,
"Mabel, as much as I want you to stay away from Alex, you have to be the one to tell him about it, your sister cannot help you," Melanie explained, and the atmosphere turned sour.
"I got it!" Mabel suddenly exclaimed causing the two ladies to look at her.
"Instead of telling him, why don't I show I am not interested in the wedding anymore?" Mabel asked as her eyes darted between her mom and sister.
"What do you mean by that?" Melanie narrowed her eyes, questioning her youngest daughter.
"Isn't today the tryouts for the bridal dress, I won't go, that should send enough signals to him, don't you think so?" Mabel asked, thrilled that she was not going to make an appearance.
She was not ready to show up in front of Alex, at least not now! She needed to be mentally strong to be able to meet him and Ivy.
