Abigail
"Hurry up and pack your bags, Abigail. We don't have all day!" Mother calls out loud to me from downstairs.
Once again, mother had another failed relationship but no sooner had she gotten out of this one than she'd entered into another one.
The only difference is that this time, mother claims she'd found "the one" and so insists we move into his house which brings us to the the reason why we were currently packing.
"Can't we just leave some things behind?" I inquired, moving downstairs with a brown box in my hands. "I mean, you guys aren't even married yet"
Mom flashed her ring finger infront of me. "But we are engaged"
"It doesn't count as anything in my book" I state because I knew the reason why mother wasn't getting married to her new man yet. She wasn't sure whatever they had was going to last.
From mother's past failed relationships, I'd gotten to know that what my mother truly needed wasn't a man but rather therapy.
Don't get me wrong, it's just that mother keeps trying to find traces of dad in the men she dates. It's like she hasn't yet moved on from father's death and honestly, I can't say I'd completely moved on as well because I had no one to talk about these kind of things with.
I barely have friends at school and at home, mother is always....well, in a world of her own.
Mother waves her hands all over the air. "Whatever. Let's just get going" Mother stills as she does a head-count of the boxes I'd brought down. "15?. What are in these boxes?"
I shrugged, pushing back my glasses on my nose bridge. "My books"
"Books?"
"Yes, you know. For my studies"
"And your clothes?"
"I'll just come get them some other time"
"God, Abigail" Mother grunts. "I hope Ricky's son teaches you a thing or two about having a social life"
"Who is Ricky?"
"My boyfriend"
I make an "O" with my mouth because honestly, the only thing I knew about mother's boyfriend was that he has a penis. Every other thing was redundant.
Ricky...now I know why mother was dating the guy though. His name starts with an "R" just like father's; Roan.
"Ricky has a son?. That's news to me" I say, trying my best to act interested.
"Yeah. Nathan's a delight. I can't wait for you and him to become best pals" Mother's voice trails off as she stares at the boxes. "You know what?. Why don't you come pick your books some other time?"
I shake my head, disapprovingly. "You pulled me out of school to move into your boyfriend's house, Mother. The book goes"
"We don't even know if there will be space enough for those books yet so for now; they stay"
Throwing my hands up in the air, I accept defeat. "Fine, let's go"
Swinging my bag over my back, I help mom move her belongings to the car booth. Once well-placed, I make my way to the backseat as mother drives off mumbling how all this was going to be an "adventure" for us.
As mother chatted off, I unzip my bag; pulling out a family portrait of mother, father and I.
Father. I thought. I know you're planning to wreck mother's new found relationship again but she seems happy this time so, can you please let her be?.
I stared at the portrait for a long ass time before tucking it back safely inside my bag as mother's endless chatters seemed to have come to an end.
Lifting my head up, i inquired. "Has the car broken down?"
"No, baby girl. We're here"
Staring out the car window, my jaw dropped as I see our car packed infront of a golden gate. As some men rush to open either side of the gate, mother drives in as the huge mansion becomes clearer.
"THIS is where your new boyfriend lives?" I asked. "Who exactly did you meet this time?. The president of the country?."
"Don't be silly, Abigail. Ricky is not the president." Mother states, her voice filled with pride. "Not yet, anyways"
"Not yet, anyways?" I repeat.
"You can save all your questions and ask him personally" Mother drives her car into the garage. No sooner had her car come to a stop had a line of maid servants filed out by the car door.
Princess treatment. I thought. Mother better not leave her new "boyfriend" any time soon or he's going to have a hard time dealing with his heartbreak.
The maid servants open the car door for us as mother and I both stepped out.
"Welcome" They greet in unison.
Mother throws her car keys into the hands of the maid servant nearest to her. "There are some bags in the booth. Please help me move them into the house"
"Will do, ma'am"
"And your name is?"
"Theresa"
"Thank you, Theresa" Mother turns over to me. "Let's get going, Abbie"
As I trudged behind mother, I couldn't get over this cinderella "step-mother" vibes I was getting from her. I guess people do change where there's money involved.
When we get to the house front door, there was a door man waiting for us.
"Welcome, madam" He greets, throwing the door open. "Master Ricky has been expecting you"
"Thank you"
In as much as mother walked into the house as if she owned the place already, I was quite taken aback that she still remembered her manners and was able to say words like "Please" and "Thank you".
I bet she was just trying to make a good first impression on them as mother loves being loved by everyone.
On walking through the front door, my jaw dropped as I took in the sight of mansion. It's interior was unlike anything I'd ever seen.
I couldn't contain the gasp that escaped my lips. "Whoa"
"You like it, huh?" Mother inquired, grinning. "This is going to be your new home"
I was too engrossed with the house that I hadn't been watching where I was going until I'd bumped into a hard, masculine figure.
Please let it not be Ricky. Please let it not be Ricky. I prayed, afraid to open my eyes until --
"Watch where you're going, dork" said the voice of a very angry person. A voice I was familiar with all too well.
Slowly opening my eyes, Nathan's face comes to view as a loud shriek climbed up my throat. "W-What are you doing here?" I stammered unable to form actually sentences.
And how could I when Nathan Heartfilia was right infront of me.
"I should be asking you that question" Nathan grabbed my wrist; tightening his grip as if I were a thief. "Who are you and what are you doing in my home?"
Nathan's POV
The loud music booming from my speaker seemed to clear my thoughts for a bit. As I lay on my bed with my eyes closed, I allow myself to feel at ease with the hard rock gothic music.
This short moment of peace was interrupted by a knock on my door. Without waiting for a response, my old man let himself in. "How are you doing ol' champ?"
I say nothing. Father didn't seem to get the message as he continued with whatever message he had to relay. "I just wanted to let you know that Eliana and her daughter are already here incase you want to go down and say hi to them"
With that said, Father close my room door as my eyes springed opened instantly. Alighting from my bed, I move over to the window where I see 'Number four' and her daughter walking through the house front lawn.
"They aren't going to last long here anyways so why should I greet them?" I muttered.
But why did Dad had to pick up a woman with a kid this time?.
"That's none of my business" I conclude. Moving away from the window, I turned off the music as I pull out my phone to text my friends, Marcus, Aiden, Gray and Gejeel in our group chat asking if any of them was down for a smoke.
Aiden responded first; stating that he was already in the school's 'smoke area' to which I let him know that I would join him shortly.
Picking up my cigarette pack and pocketing it into my jeans pack pocket, I quickly make my way down the stairs to avoid bumping into 'Number four and co' but her daughter just had to bump into me first.
My anger and irritation heightened when she had the guts to ask me what I was doing here in my own home.
Grabbing her wrist, I turn the tables around. "I should be asking you that question; who are you and what are you doing in my home?"
Eliana, her mother quickly steps in- between us."Pardon Abigail, Nathan. She hasn't met you or your father yet before"
"It doesn't matter" I cut Eliana sharply while narrowing my eyes at 'Abigail'. "Don't ever speak to me that way again"
Letting go of her wrist, I continue towards the main door as Eliana yells out after me. "Would you be back for dinner?. I'll be cooking my signature dish"
I halt, squeezing my fist as hard as I could; trying to suppress my anger. Turning slightly to face Eliana, I say. "Eliana, was it?"
"Yes" She replies with a smile.
"Don't push your luck, Eliana and don't get too comfortable here. You won't be here that long anyways. Now, if you'll excuse me"
Stepping out of the house, I decide that I couldn't wait until I get to the school's 'smoke area' as I pull out a cigarette from it's pack, lit it up and take in heavy puff.
Exhaling, smoke oozes out of my mouth as I suddenly start to feel calm. When I'd reached the 'smoke area', Aiden yells at me. "Hey, I was waiting for you so that we could smoke together. No fair!"
I take in another heavy puff of cigar. "I couldn't help it. I was about to loose my mind in that damn house"
Aiden lits up his own cigarette butt. "I take it 'Number four' moved in today"
"With her daughter"
Aiden hollered with laughter. "Is she hot?"
I scowled in disgust. "You have the hots for old ladies now?"
Aiden throws his cigarette butt at me. "Don't be silly. I'm talking about the daughter not her mother"
"That's even worse. Her daughter is a down-to-earth nerd. If I was to pick one; I'd screw the mother"
"Don't let your father hear that" A third voice says, joining us as Gajeel makes his presence known. He strides in with a big bottle of booze."Remind me again why we smoke and drink on school grounds?"
"Because that's the fun in it" I stress out. "Where's the fun in breaking the rules if we're not getting caught?"
"We ARE 18" Another voice says, joining us. It was Gray and he was holding four shot glasses."We're literally doing nothing wrong"
"The story would have been different if we weren't in school grounds" Aiden clarifies. "Now pour us some shots"
Gray put down the glasses as Gejeel opens the wine bottle. "So, what did I miss so far?"
"Nothing much" Gajeel responds. "Just Nathan talking about how he'd screw his father's new woman"
I throw my cigarette butt at Gajeel. "I didn't say that technically. I was just citing an instance for comparison"
Gajeel chuckles. "Oops, my bad. Sorry". That fucker. I know he wasn't sorry though.
Gejeel hands us each a glass. "Then pray tell what this 'instance' is"
"All Nathan meant to say was that 'Number four's' daughter isn't attractive." Aiden says, coming to my rescue. "Let it go, Gajeel"
"Really?" Gajeel inquires. "Finally someone to take 'Abigail Holden's' place, I suppose?"
I froze. Despite the coincidence of whomsoever Gajeel has just mentioned, I didn't want to hear THAT name. But still, my curiosity got the best of me. "Abigail Holden?"
"Yeah. She's the school 'most unattractive nerd' "Aiden clarifies. "I'm not surprised you aren't aware of her existence. You only care about us and the girls your screw"
I stretch out my empty glass shot at Gray for a refill as I acknowledge Aiden. "And do you have a picture of this 'Abigail' ?"
Aiden chuckled as if I'd asked him one of the stupidest questions. "Of course I do. Just a sec"
Pulling out his phone, I watch as Aiden scrolls through his gallery. My attention returs to Gray as he hands over a filled glass back to me.
"Found it!" Aiden yells, bursting out with laughter like a maniac.
As I empty the drink in my glass, Aiden shoves his phone screen right into my face. "This is Abigail"
Looking at his screen with the side of my eyes, I stilled then spat out the drink in my mouth.
Abigail
This is The Nathan Heartfilia's house?. Great. Just great. Of all persons mother snatched up to be her boyfriend it just had to be Nathan's father. What were the odds?.
Who is Nathan Heartfilia, you might ask?. He is the king of Saint college high which just happened to be the same school I'm enrolled in.
He moved with a group; Gray, Gajeel and Aiden. Each one of them were from prestigious families and because they were so good looking they were the Kings of Saint college.
Although they each had their terrible attitude, it didn't stop girls from flocking all over them.
Gray is known for his very pretty smile, Gajeel is known for being ridiculously smart, Aiden is known for being good at all kinds of sports. He once represented the school in an international football game and won a gold medal.
And now that brings us to the black sheep whom was known for nothing good except being a playboy; Nathan Heartfilia.
Despite the fact Nathan uses girls and dump them however he please, it didn't stop most girls from daydreaming about him. Myself inclusive and you can't blame me for that.
Now, I get to live in the same house with Nathan?. Oh hell.
Mother beats my arm; snapping me out ofmy thought. "Of all questions you could ask, you just had to ask him what he was doing in his own home"
I roll my eyes. "Don't give me that speech as if it's my fault Nathan doesn't like us. I bet he never had the intention of opening up to us in the first place"
"Even still, I bet you made it worse"
"Don't you two fight over Nathan" A third voice says, joining mother and I in the hallway.
Turning towards the direction of the voice, I see a tall, sturdy looking man with defined facial features. This man had to be Ricky. I was so sure of it. Not because of his looks but because I know the type of men my mother usually goes for and he was IT.
"The kid is always throwing a tantrum" Thr man continues as he makes his way towards. Extending out his hands, he says. "You must be Abigail. I'm Ricky. Your mother has told me so much about you"
I shake his hands. "All good things, I hope"
"Well if being the top in your class and bagging an international scholarship isn't a good thing, I don't know what else is"
That's my mother. Best in going overboard. I give my mother a side eye. If she was expecting me to cover up for her lies then she had better think again.
Rather than responding to Ricky's comment, I retract my hands from his. "I'm quite exhausted from the trip. May I be shown my room?"
"Of course. Ophelia!"
A maid servant rushes up to Ricky's side. "Yes, sir?"
"Pleaee show Abigail to her room"
"Yes, sir!" Turning towards me, she bows. "Please follow me"
I trudged behind Ophelia as she leads me up the stairs to my room but not before glancing back at my mother and watching her so head over heels for Ricky.
I guess mother was serious about Ricky. Ricky was even too good to be true so I guess that's why he had a son like Nathan.
I really should apologize to Nathan when he gets back though. I bet he doesn't know we go to the same school or neither does he know about my existence before now but I'd pissed him off and gotten on his wrong foot.
"Let's clear it all up for mother's sake" I mumbled under my breathe.
"We're here" Ophelia says, stopping infront of a closed brown door.
"Thank you, Ophelia" I watch Ophelia take her leave before turning on the door knob and walking into my room.
My room was pretty neat and decent. I could tell that Ricky had gone out of his way to make it fit for me as it was filled with my favourite things.
Ricky didn't need to try so hard. If he was a nice guy, I was willing to give him a chance but there's just this empty space that only father could fill.
Sitting on the king size bed with pink covers, I pulled out father's picture frame out of my bag and set it on the table top. "Look father, Mother is doing well. So you don't need to worry about us anymore"
A knock on my door diverts my attention as I see Ricky standing outside. "May I come in?"
"Yeah, sure"
Ricky makes his way towards me as he sits on the bed and stares at father's picture frame. "Is this your dad?"
Oh shit. Did Ricky feel insulted with dad's picture frame?."Yeah, it is. I'm sorry if his picture frame makes you feel uncomfortable--"
"Don't be silly, Abigail. He is your father and always will be. You can keep his whole picture album if you want to" He says. "Listen, I'm not trying to replace your father and I know your mother still loves him very much as well but that's why I love her.
"While we were still getting to know eachother, she told me so much about your father. Your mother wasn't always smiling, you know. But now she does. And it means a lot to me ro know that I'm the reason behind her smiles." Ricky concludes.
"Alright, I'm sold"
Ricky chuckles. "What?"
"You've won me over. Give it your best shot with my mother. I'll be rooting for you"
Ricky pats my back as he springs up from my bed. "Lunch would be ready soon. Be down when it is"
"You bet" As Ricky was about to step out of my room, I call him back. "Hey, Ricky?"
"Yes?"
"Would Nathan be alright?" I inquired, unable to mask the worry in my tone.
"Of course he will" Ricky assures me. "He's my son"
