Chapter 1 Imperial Decree

Great Xia Empire

The Great Xia empire stretched thousands of miles across the Eastern region , Legend has it that the great Xia territory was a whole before a battle between two Powerful Experts ruined the Northern territories into the Barren Wastelands of today, due to the terrain of the wastelands they serve as a natural fortress and an attack front for the great Xia empire and the geographical location makes it easy to resist invasions

...

Zhan manor , Barren wastelands

In a large training courtyard , a young boy around 13 years of age could be seen training with a Spear, he had a tall physique and long hair that reached his shoulders with facial features that were a bit wild yet extremely handsome.

The Great Spear in his hands, a large broad sword joined to a strong metal shaft brought fierce winds as it swept through the Courtyard and even after hours of spear practice his hands were still stable and his thrusts and sweeps full of vigor. His movement, form and actions powerful.

Still the greatest anomaly were his eyes , no pupils, they were like seas of molten gold, beautiful and dominating, and with every thrust his muscles contracting and relaxing, his breath heavy, then he hears the sound of footsteps approaching and his eyes reverts back to normal, pupils dark in color appearing .

A soft knock could be heard outside the door , And he laid the Spear beside a huge stone and answered, "enter !".

A young petite maid enters the yard, her curious eyes sweeping across the Courtyard, her eyes catching the large Spear by the stone and the dented pit beneath it,due to it's frequent placement at this spot this ordinary looking spear close to the height of an average man had caved in the ground.

her eyes carrying an hint of admiration, according to accounts she heard around the Manor this spear weighed a monstrous 10 thousand jins, weilded by a strong cultivator it was thinkable, but by a mortal, it was astonishing.

It always amazed her how her Young Master wielded it at ease ... his physical strength was simply inhuman!

With such powerful ability he dominated the younger generation, though he was not thought much off.

Snapping from her thoughts back she bowed, " Young master! , the Elders request your presence".

" Alright, I'll be there soon ", he said softly as he entered into his quarters

...

After washing up , Zhan Shenwei walked to the Main hall where the Elders gathered.

The Zhan Clan was a powerful War Clan in Barren Wastelands, stretching across a large expanse, even with the closeness of his residence to Main hall due to his status, it still took a while to reach there.

The large main hall had a solemn vibe with the Elders sitting on both sides of the hall and the Clan Leader sited at the foremost seat, after entering he bowed , "Zhan Wei greets the Elders and Clan Master !" , and looked to the person on the foremost seat "Father".

His father the Clan Head nodded in response and one of the elders started to speak " The Capital is in turmoil right now , Rebel forces have assassinated the Crown Prince and Princess Yunzi is destined to ascend the throne , with no other male descendant to ensure the continuation of the Imperial line , the Emperor issued a decree that you be betrothed to the princess to leave future descendants for the Great Xia Empire".

Caught quite off guard at the sudden news news of betrothal, he asked in a slightly raised voice. "I understand that there is a civil war in the capital and the Emperor is trying to consolidate the imperial line, but even if there was a need for a Prince consort to be chosen, I can't cultivate, so why was i chosen? ".

The decree of the Emperor seemed so incoherent with relation to him... Crown Prince, Princess Yunzi, Future descendants.

He couldn't understand the intricacies, yet as his mind spun he could grasp an inkling.

Without waiting for a response he continued, "so What is the decision of the Elders ?".

Zhan Wei's father Zhan liang looked at his son deeply as he replied "We have to abide by the Emperor's decree".

Not surprised by his father's reaction, The Zhan family had no reason to refuse and in a way, of all the possible suitors he was simply the best option for betrothal to Princess Yunzi.

Zhan Shenwei felt a pang of rage flow through him, he was drawn into the underlying currents of the Great Xia empire, because they thought he was weak or " he would be weak ", he was being used.

"This child will abide by Father's wishes ", he bowed and left the Main hall.

...

After his departure those in the hall continued in meeting.

Zhan Liang tapped the armrest of his large seat as he said "Elders what do you think of the imperial decree ".

An Elder sighed and spoke in response, " the young master is clearly dissatisfied ".

The same Elder that spoke to Zhan Shenwei when he entered the hall "the Second Elder" answered him, " Clan head!, with the rebel forces and the capital in chaos, I think the Emperor wants to increase the strength of his forces by involving our family".

Zhan liang laughed aloud, " Increase his forces!, you underestimate the Emperor ", he said as he shook his head

Although there are rebels in the capital , they are just pawns of an outside force, the Crown prince lived a life of debauchery and was poisoned through intercourse with a courtesan already containing the poison in her body , it was a premeditated attack that no one could have expected, the poison was extremely potent so it was not noticed until it was too late".

He continued , "Since the founding of the Empire , Our Zhan clan has guarded the Barren Wastelands with the other War Clans from beasts and outside forces, and years of war to any threat to the Great Xia Empire has made us formidable with high merits but distance to the capital has made us not involved in court matters... the Wasteland war clans have defended the North for centuries but we have not much say or prestige in the Imperial court and this has made some clans disgruntled, this Marriage bridges the Wastelands with the Imperial court , but marrying the princess to Zhan Wei who can't cultivate and hence not much threat to the Imperial Family is the main advantage ".

With a light chuckle on his face, Zhan Liang said, " to be honest I can't fully fathom the thought of the Emperor, but to think the Emperor needs our Clan to consolidate his power is a bit far fetched, beneath the Great Xia Sky, none is equal to The Emperor in might, even in the entire Eastern Region few are his peers.

The Second Elder had a look of shock on his face, " Clan head is wise!" , he had not thought of things this deeply

The Third Elder, a thin old Man with a sharp presence spoke out, his voice a bit skeptical, "shouldn't the Young Master know about this? "

Zhan liang shook his head, as he replied " I can't reject the decree but Zhan Shenwei is my only son, not being able to cultivate makes him not much a threat in the capital so the less he knows the better , gather a group of maids and warriors to serve him in the capital, Second Elder will accompany them".

" We will obey the Clan head's orders " the Elders cupped their fist as they bowed.

...

Thousands of miles from the Northern border Wastelands, Imperial Observatory, Imperial palace, Capital city.

A dignified old eunuch could be seen looking towards the night sky in the North direction, as if peering into distance, with a light sigh he hesitated before bowing towards his right direction," Your Majesty this humble servant thinks the boy you choose is not suitable for the Princess".

A middle aged man with sword shaped brows and a sharp dashing face dressed in regal Imperial robe with a jade crown on his head , his body exuding an aura of power and authority with his deep black eyes carrying a sense of solemness and wisdom.

This was the Great Xia Emperor that dominated the Eastern region, Xia Tianming!, his gaze also settled on the Northern sky, the barren wastelands direction.

A moment of silence engulfed then Xia Tianming responsed, " We have our reasons, when he comes let him go through formal training, you may leave ".

" Yes your Majesty" the head eunuch bowed and left .

" What do you think " , the Emperor spoke in the seemingly empty room , yet a reply reached him .

An old man appeared from the shadows, his back was hunched , he had white hair and beards yet his eyes seemed to be filled with spirit .

" I understand your Majesty concerns, How many more years does his Majesty have ?"

The Emperor looked at him , with a stern fierce look on his face as he said " it should be enough, before Yunzi is ready We would do everything in our power to protect her , We won't go down so easily".

Chapter 2 Primordial chaos god

As Zhan Shenwei walked back, he thought about the imperial decree, " My inability to cultivate has made some people think I can be used as a pawn , the capital huh, interesting".

He had his own reasons for agreeing so easily, he wasn't asked to do something detrimental, it was only marrying a princess, since he couldn't reject the decree, he left it to fate.

After leaving the main hall , Zhan Shenwei walked to Martial pavilion, where the Martial arts techniques and cultivation texts of the Clan were kept.

On his way he passed by the training grounds.

In the training grounds, young kids aged 10 - 15 children were seen cultivating .

The Zhan Clan was a large clan guarding the Wastelands with other war clans, martial might was taken seriously and with hundreds of member after coming of age, clan members were assigned military duty.

A middle aged man was instructing the kids and upon seeing Zhan Shenwei he bowed lightly and greeted him, " Young master!"

The kids too all bowed and greeted, although their reaction was not that sincere, they still had to greet him.

Zhan Shenwei was the only son of the Clan Head even if he couldn't cultivate they didn't dare to disrespect him.

He nodded at the middle aged man and left.

Some kids had looks of disdain and mockery as they watched him leave .

The Zhan Clan was different from normal clans , the line of succession was not guaranteed, only the strongest in his or her generation could become the next Clan head.

Actually Zhan Shenwei was not useless, born with "Innate Divine Strength" and renowned for his battle instincts, among his generation none could defeat him.

Nevertheless he had crippled meridans and couldn't cultivate, with time the gap between him and his peers would only get wider.

Not blind to their actions, he knew their thoughts, to him it was just immature youthful malice, he didn't put much though to it.

Only he knew his strength wasn't as simple as just " Innate Divine Strength ".

.....

The Martial Pavilion was a two storied pagoda, the ground floor was accessible to all the clan while the rest required one to either be of a certain realm or an Elder's permission.

After greeting the Elder in charge of the Pavilion, he went to the section where weapon techniques were kept , most weapon techniques had requirements for cultivation except foundational arts.

Foundational arts were used by people to learn the basics of weapons techniques, but after after a fews years all outgrew these basics, but a " waste " who couldn't cultivate combat or cultivation techniques, it was through this basics he honed powerful battle instincts.

The Martial Pavilion had few Clansmen who were busy studying their cultivation techniques, they ignored him and continued to focus on what they were doing.

Apart from the Clan Head and elders , Clansmen were not mandated to greet anyone in the Martial pavilion.

In fact this serene atmosphere suited him, taking a booklet titled " Sword Foundation Arts " he sat cross-legged to read.

After a while, he heard someone approach him from behind, looking up from the book he turned to face his intruder.

A young girl around 15 years of age , she had a beautiful face with short messy curls and a valiant aura, Zhan Shenwei knew who she was but he was curious why she approached him.

Xiaomei looked the young boy sitting cross-legged, his wild handsome features and tall physique seemed to make people forget he was just a boy, in fact younger than her.

" I've seen you come here so many times , what's the point?"

She couldn't understand, every time he came he could only read these foundational techniques, and he was even diligent in it, who was diligent in " foundation techniques ".

The Martial Pavilion was usually a quiet place but after hearing her speak , everyone's attention was piqued, even the Elder at the entrance had his attention on the duo .

Zhan Shenwei was amused by her question, he looked at her and laughed loudly. He was scarcely unrestrained like this.

This was the first time someone asked him that kind of question, in fact he knew that the same thing was in the mind of most his clansmen.

Since she had the courage to ask, then he would answer.

" Interesting, what's the point?".

" My meridians are crippled and I can't cultivate, but so what!".

" All living things are not born equal under the Heavens , yet the Dao is merciful, as far as one is willing, in the presence of life and perseverance, there is a way, there would be a way".

After saying so , He placed his focus back on what he was reading.

Zhan Xiaomei stood rooted , she hadn't expected this kind of response when she approached him, maybe anger or stubbornness.

Yet his response, that calmness and terrifying confidence , the clansmen eavesdropping on their conversation were also impressed. His state of mind was commendable.

" A kid has this kind of will power" , unlike the rest , The Elder understood better what Zhan Shenwei's words meant , even experts wouldn't feel that way in their hearts , it required a lot of belief in one's self.

"The Clan Head has sired a good son "

...

After a while, News of Zhan Shenwei's betrothal to the Imperial princess had spread everywhere in the capital even to the wastelands, and it didn't take long for information about the future Prince consort to reach the knowledgable and powerful.

With the Crown Prince died and Princess Yunzi set to inherit the throne, Zhan Shenwei marrying the Princess didn't make much sense to the masses talk less the nobles. Unless if the Emperor just wanted a figure head in-law.

Nobody clearly understood the thoughts of the Emperor.

The Zhan Clan had to make arrangements, according to the decree , Zhan Shenwei ei was to leave for the Imperial city as soon as possible.

He had to undergo basic formal training and etiquette before he became the imperial consort.

As for person of discussion around the empire, Zhan Shenwei was dining with a large table filled with different varieties of food in front of him, his personal mind Qing'er serving more dishes as he ate.

The barren wastelands lacking in pure spirit qi was home to many spirit herbs and wild beasts which contain a lot of blood Qi and Vital essence.

Although he ate elegantly, the dishes in the table emptied fastly, the maid beside him obviously used to his humoungous appetite kept replacing his empty plates with other dishes.

Already used to this sight, for as long as she could remember since she started serving him, the young master always ate equivalent to several grown men.

....

After dinner, In a dimly lit room , Zhan Shenwei could be seen sitting cross legged with his upper body bare and eyes closed .

Every muscle of his body could be seen contracting and relaxing rapidly in a mysterious rhythm .

In his sea of consciousness, his consciousness could also be seen sitting naked cross legged with another consciousness in front of it.

This was one of his mysteries, he had dual consciousness.

This other consciousness could be seen undergoing the same state of contraction and relaxation as his real body.

it had the same physical features as the first yet was thousands of feet tall and had a physique that seemed to defy the heavens.

it's eyes were like molten gold with the markings of the five elements and with every breadth it seemed to absorb the vital essence of heaven and earth.

Zhan Wei was born with two incarnations of his spirit in his sea of consciousness .

One was human and the other was a giant godlike being, this was one secret he never told anybody .

After his birth, a massive heavenly tribulation came down on him , it crippled his meridians and almost killed him.

He was very weak and even his Parents didn't expect him to live.

Yet he was tenacious and survived , he ate a lot as he grew and became healthier and stronger.

This saga was the story behind his name, he had battled death and heavenly tribulation to survive as an infant, even as a descendant of a battle clan, his survival was epic, hence he was named Zhan Shenwei.

But since he showed nothing extraordinary apart from his strength, no one payed him unnecessary attention after all his meridians were crippled.

The Primordial Chaos God scripture was a body cultivation technique that has been cultivated by Zhan Wei since birth that existed in the memory of that Godlike incarnation.

It devoured the vital essence of heaven and earth and living things.

The first tier involved the absorption of the vital essence of the five elements into the five organs ( fire to heart , water to kidney , metal to lungs , wood to spleen and earth to liver) and after every cycle, the vital energy of the five elements was used to refine the body.

Zhan Wei had since cultivated the first tier to major completion but hasn't been able to transition to grand completion.

After a while he opened his eyes and sighed.

The vital essence of the five elements in the barren wastelands was scarce , Zhan Wei could only rely on devouring the vital essence in wild beasts .

Unless he could find a spiritual abode , blessed land or spirit fruit or treasure that contained the vital essence of the five elements , it wouldn't be easy for him to reach the grand completion of the first tier, but after years of cultivation he could feel he was close.

...

Purple Cloud Palace , Imperial City

The Purple Cloud Palace was the residence of Princess Yunzi.

A young girl sat a jade lotus platform, she had very beautiful face with bright purple pupils and fair skin, she had a graceful aura and wore an imperial robe with purple Cloud patterns , her long hair was tied into a bun with a golden hairpin.

She furrowed her brows as she read the imperial decree in her hands.

After a while she sighed and dropped the decree on the table.

" I'm going to get married to someone I don't even know".

Of course she understood her Father's woes , with her brother died she was the only remaining imperial descendant.

The Great Xia empire was in turbulent waters and her father was dying.

Yes her Father was dying, although he still looked powerful, he only had a few years left .

They had to guide against internal enemies and outside forces.

The Great Xia empire wasn't the only force in the Eastern region , in fact before the founding of the empire , the Eastern region was dominated by Sects.

After the Great war of centuries ago , The Emperor dominated the Eastern region and established the empire.

That Great Emperor of centuries ago was now on his dying breath , Experts of his level without breaking through to an higher realm couldn't live pass a certain age and he was injured.

" I have to become stronger!", she thought as she clenched her fist.

After a moment she calmed down and faced the maid who brought the decree, "Cai'er , how is he like?" .

" Your Highness , apart from the fact he can't cultivate, he's said to be very handsome and was born with innate Divine strength, he has a huge appetite and spends most of his time training foundational arts".

Clearly, having done some groundwork the maid already knew a lot about about Zhan Wei.

" Foundational arts ", Xia Yunzi chuckled, she could almost imagine a simple minded figure.

" How's his character and temperament like?" .

The maid paused a bit , she had a hint of hesitation on her face.

Xia Yunzi also noticed her hesitation, " What is it ?" , She asked.

Cai'er replied, " According to the rumors he's calm and a bit indifferent to most things ".

No woman would want to get married to an indifferent man , women were emotional creatures , they liked to be pampered and loved.

Although she had no say in the marriage, Cai'er still wanted the Princess to get married to someone who would love and cherish her.

Xia Yunzi knew what was going on in her maid's mind but she didn't know him, why would she care if he had an indifferent attitude. But maybe she should after all they were to be married.

Chapter 3 Babarians

After dawn the next day , Zhan Shenwei went to his parents quarters .

Although he had his own quarters , he still had breakfast everyday with his parents.

The Clan Head mansion was located in the central area of Zhan Clan.

Before he entered , Zhan Shenwei ei saw a short chubby figure running towards him.

Seeing this Zhan Shenwei sighed , this short fatty was his little sister "xiaoyue".

" Big brother!", A short cute fatty with dimples and hair tied to pony tails jumped on him .

Looking at the giggling little girl in his hands , Shenwei could only smile.

This little girl probably used to seeing her older brother eat a lot , also stuffed herself with food.

She was only 7 years , yet she looked like a meatball , Zhan Shenwei could only hope she could curb her appetite.

Carrying the little fatty in his arms he entered the house.

The table was already set with large dishes , his Father sat on the main seat and his mother beside him.

After greeting his parents, he sat down on his sit with the little fatty still in his arms.

If he could , Zhan Shenwei wouldn't always want to come to his parents place for breakfast, but his mother insisted, that their family had at least breakfast together and subtly he enjoyed the time spent.

Zhan Shenwei ate much so there was always a lot of dishes prepared for him.

Every morning this little fatty would jump on him and refuse to go to her seat , and as he ate she would stuff her mouth with food till she couldn't eat again, emulating his appetite

He always felt a bit of guilt anytime he looked at the little fatty in his arms but as he saw the joy in her face as she ate , he couldn't bring himself to send her away.

And clearly, probably he was the only one bothered by her " roundness ", his parents indulged her.

" Wei'er , How do you feel about the betrothal ?" , His Mother asked.

Seeing the worry on his mother's face he replied " it's ok ", adding in jest " maybe I might find something in the imperial palace library that could help heal my meridians".

Zhan Shenwei's mother "Lin Ran" was a petite simple woman, he knew she was concerned about him going to the imperial city so he tried to ease her fears.

Although he could see she was still worried, she had calmed herself a bit.

His Father didn't say anything but he knew he was also concerned, if he could he would have rejected the imperial decree.

The imperial court was a very dangerous place , even a Crown Prince was killed .

.....

After breakfast, He was about to leave when his mother told him his Father was waiting for him in the study.

He was about to knock , when he heard a soft voice say " enter ".

In the study, his Father was sitted across a large luxurious mahogany table, in his hand was a old scroll he was reading.

Zhan Shenwei's father Zhan liang was a tall handsome burly man, his face carrying a stern look .

Zhan Shenwei stood and waited for him , after a while he looked up from the scroll.

" I heard about what you said in the Martial Pavilion"

Of course Zhan Shenwei was not surprised His Father "Zhan liang" knew about the little matter incident, if even the Clan Head didn't have access to information of the clan who would, especially one with his son involved.

He continued, " Although your meridians are crippled, there are all kind of wondrous rare treasures in the world, if you can find one it is possible to heal your meridians.

After saying so he threw a ring to Zhan Wei.

" You don't need to worry about being able to open the storage ring , I refined it with my blood so those of my bloodline can easily access it ".

Not able able to cultivate, Zhan Shenwei didn't have the spirit Qi needed to operate a storage ring, but a bloodline recognition bypassed this

Shenwei bowed his head and was about to

leave, when he heard his Father tell him

" Be careful in the Capital !"

As he walked to his quarters , Zhan Shenwei thought back to his father's word ," it looks like it's not that simple, my betrothal to the princess".

Still he had to go , although he was not interested in the marriage he was stuck in the first tier of his Primordial Chaos body cultivation, the Imperial capital was the city of the Emperor, he was sure he could get some of the resources needed to help him breakthrough.

And who could refuse the Emperor.

In his room , Zhan Shenwei inspected the ring in his hands, after dropping his blood on it, he felt a connection to the ring and could open it at will .

The ring had a small space of 10 meters and was filled with gold, spirit stones , food , clothing and other necessities.

Spirit stones was the currency used among cultivators , it contained spirit Qi and could be used to speed up cultivation.

People in the myriad human realms began cultivation by opening their spirit meridians and condensing a Qi sea in their daitian through the absorption of spirit Qi.

They could also be used in weapon refinement and formations and much more, Spirit Qi cultivation was the mainstream form of cultivation.

.....

In a carriage drawn by Raging blood horses, Zhan Shenwei was headed to the Capital.

Raging blood horses were exclusive to the barren wastelands, they had a huge robust figure and blood red eyes and they could run for days without being exhausted. Rugged and prestigious in the barren wastelands and beyond.

Apart from his personal maid " Qing'er" , he was accompanied by the Second Elder " Zhan Feng" , his daughter Zhan Xiaomei and a group of warriors .

This was the same Xiaomei that approached him in the Zhan Manor martial pavilion, Shenwei was a bit surprised when Zhan Xiaomei decided to accompany her father to follow him.

After leaving the barren wastelands, as they approached the capital, Zhan Shenwei could see grasslands, villages, towns and magnificent buildings.

Compared to the barren wastelands that was filled with jungles and mountains , the rest of the Great Xia empire was obviously more prosperous.

They stopped at a few towns to rest during the journey but most of their time was spent ridding nonstop to the Capital.

After so many days of travel , they finally got to the Imperial City. The journey was relatively harm free, aside wild beasts and bandits they had no obstructions.

Seeing the huge City in front of him , Zhan Shenwei couldn't help but feel astonished.

The Imperial City had tall vast walls that encompassed it around, with four entry gates at corners.

he could see soldiers on top of the wall , they all had weapons with them and carried a fierce cold aura.

The barren wastelands was north to the Imperial Capital, so they naturally approached the city from the northern gate.

When they were about about a 100 meters to the large gate, they were obstructed .

" Who goes there ?" , A soldier shouted from atop the city fence.

As he shouted , the rest sheathed their swords and pointed at them, clearly in hostility at a foreign intruder.

From afar, he could feel a terrifying pressure, it was as if they showed any misbehaviour , they would be slaughtered.

" As expected of the city of the Emperor" Zhan Shenwei looked around apart from the Second Elder and some strong members of his guards, the rest were shaken by this huge pressure.

In a way Shenwei was quite surprised, the Zhan clan was a main noble clan of the Xia empire, but thought situated at the barren wastelands was so far of the capital, those at the capital couldn't recognize the clan emblem on their carriages.

The Second Elder carried the imperial decree in his hands and flew approaching the gate at 50 meters from the entrance.

Hovering above the ground, he opened the imperial decree and shouted.

" By the order of His Majesty, My Zhan clan Young Master has been betrothed to the Princess , open the gates let us pass ".

After hearing him a soldier went to relay what he said to the commander.

Although news that the Princess had been betrothed to someone had spread, they were still surprised .

Unlike the barren wastelands that had harsh weather and constant war , the rest of Great Xia was relatively peaceful.

Looking at their garments and appearance , they simply looked like barbarians.

Was the person the Princess was betrothed to among this barbarians.

When the Commander heard, he quickly had someone relay the news to the capital before sending a soldier to verify the decree.

After confirming the decree, the gates were opened and they were allowed to enter .

.....

As they drove by the imperial city , Zhan Shenwei sighed.

Paved roads , huge beautiful buildings of all kinds and people all about , compared to the imperial city the towns they saw on the way looked far less impressive. The prosperity was incomparable.

The people all wore luxurious clothes and jewelry and all sorts of things were displayed.

They also received strange looks from people , from the clothes they wore, to the raging blood horses, things like that were not common in the capital.

The Commander himself personally escorted them to the Imperial palace.

The Imperial palace was in the center of the Capital, it had it's own walls and was heavily guided, the buildings were majestic and were made from all kinds of precious stones and gold, mountains, jade pavilions and spirit fields, extremely luxurious with a hint of immortal breadth around it

At the entrance a group of eunuchs were there to greet them and escorted them to their residence.

.....

In Purple Cloud Pavilion, news had already reached Xia Yunzi of their arrival.

And though she didn't show, she was nervous, after all she was going to get married to Zhan Shenwei.

Even if she didn't feel anything else per say, she was bound to have some curiosity towards her future companion.

She had already accepted but she still hoped for a good spouse.
