"I can't wait for the day of the party to arrive... I need to sew a new dress!"
Lucinda says, bouncing happily as she twirls around holding the hem of her skirt, imagining the dress she would make.
"Stop chattering and get back to stirring that spoon. We don't want to burn the candy!"
Catiline replied, focusing on stirring the wood to increase the flames of the fire.
Her face was full of charcoal stains. Each time she tries to clean with her hands, it gets even more dirty, you could see how focused the young woman was. She frowns, checking closely if she had put enough wood.
"You'll never find a husband, not in your way!"
Lucinda says, picking up the spoon she had left aside and slowly stirring the pot again. She looks at her sister with a bold smile on her lips and continues.
"You know! You're already old enough to get married... I'm sure we'll find beautiful rich suitors at the party. Maybe we'll marry some merchant, or better, someone from the army... God, it would be splendid, sister!"
Lucinda happily talks, while her sister looks serious.
Cateline thinks it's hard to find a man who is not injured or crazy from the war.
Lucinda is ambitious and wants more than just marriage.
Cateline sighed, and picked up another spoon nearby and went to the pot to assist her sister, who was lost in her thoughts and had almost stopped stirring the candy..
"You know we're not going to the party, right?! We will stay at the entrance, selling sweets, or have you forgotten, sister?"
Cateline says a little disappointed at her sister. She knows how much Lucinda wanted to go.
"I know, but what if we sell everything? Who knows? Even if it's at the end of the party... What do you think?"
Lucinda answers with a sad expression on her face that soon goes away. She focuses on the candy thoughtfully.
"That's it! Let's sell all the candy before the party!"
She smiles again, bringing cheer to the place.
Cateline gives a smile, looking at her sister. She knew how lively the young girl was and never gave up.
"Look, I don't mind just selling the sweets, you can go to the party..."
When Cateline says this, Lucinda turns to her and replies.
"No way I'm leaving you alone! No way... We'll sell everything together, and if some thief or whatever, a pervert, comes, I will not leave you alone selling the sweets, never sister."
Lucinda was always responsible, just like everyone else in the family. She cared for everyone's safety and health always first. With all those wars and disasters going on, the family needed to stick together more and more.
"Right... So let's sell all these sweets..."
Cateline says, confident in what she had just said. She smiled at her sister sincerely.
The two wrapped the sweets in banana leaves and corn, which smelled delicious. They only had a few jams left to make. Despite the hard work, the young women would soon reap the rewards..
All income from the property depended on their recipes and items produced by them. The party in the village would be a great opportunity to earn extra money, so the girls were working hard to produce as much as possible for such an event.
Two days pass and the time for the long-awaited party had arrived. Lucinda was excitedly packing the small cart, putting everything they needed to take to sell. She hums softly, smiling.
She wears the dress she said she had made especially for that day. It was a green dress, made with fabrics she bought with her savings when she went to the village.
Lucinda was always very beautiful. Her dark blond hair and greenish eyes were striking, as was her body. She was very short. This always attracted men.
The young woman was cautious. She wanted someone rich, or with a lot of money at least, so she never gave anyone the ball.
Cateline, on the other hand, had honey-colored hair like her father's, greenish eyes that pulled her mother's, like her brothers.
Cateline was much taller than her sister, with a beautiful body too, but due to lack of delicacy and sensitivity men never paid attention to her, the girl always wore old clothes, and did not take care of herself well, but this was never a problem for her, since she did not care about the opinion of others. Cateline was saving her savings to buy her long-awaited house, with an enormous space for plantations.
"You look beautiful!"
Says Milenna, mother of Lucinda, Cateline and Martin.
She had just come from the garden, with her youngest son Martin, where she was harvesting some vegetables for dinner, he was stunned to see his sister.
"Mommy, has Lucinda become a princess?"
Martin asked while pulling a part of his mother's dress, who soon after heard the question burst into laughter with Lucinda.
"No, dear... But who knows one day, right?"
She says, putting the basket of food on the floor.
Cateline takes some baskets to the wagon. She is carrying some bread that she had just baked to sell. Her clothes are dirty with flour.
"Don't tell me you're going out like this?"
Lucinda asks as she approaches patting Cateline's clothes trying to get the dirt off.
Cateline wears a worn out dress, dark blue. It looked like they had worn it for years; it was already fraying and you could see some moth holes.
"Let's just sell things as usual. It's no big deal..."
Cateline speaks, lifting the heavy basket of bread to put in the cart, Lucinda holds a kind of package, wrapped in an old fabric.
"What is this?"
Cateline asks her sister, Lucinda holds out her hand handing over the item.
"It's a party! And I know you, I wouldn't let you ruin my groom hunt, you'd scare even the customers like that..."
Says Lucinda, smiling at her sister waving the package for Cateline to take.
"A dress...?"
She says after unrolling the fabric.
"Go try it on. Since I didn't take your measurements, I don't know if it will be good..."
Lucinda says, a little worried, but animatedly.
"Thank you very much. You know you didn't need it, sister."
Cateline gives a big hug to her sister who continues to hurry insisting that she try on the dress right away.
"Hurry up! We're going to be late, then you thank me!"
Lucinda says, pushing her sister into the house.
Cateline tried on the dress, it was long in light color, something very simple, usually the fabrics without color were much cheaper, Lucinda had little money and Cateline knew that, so she didn't mind the simplicity. Unfortunately the dress was a little tight, making Cateline's bust a little exposed, but nothing that a cape would not solve, so she would cover her marked curves.
Cateline had a long hooded cloak to cover the bare parts of her body. Soon it would get cold, so she would have no problem putting it on beforehand.
As she leaves the house with the dress, her sister and mother see her covered by the cape, and immediately question her.
"Cate, where is the dress? Why did you cover it up with that old cape?"
Cateline's mother, who always called her by her nickname, was curious to see her wearing something new.
"Mom... it got a little tight..."
Said the young woman shyly, lifting a little of the cloak that covered almost her entire body.
Lucinda laughed, which made Cate's eyes widen.
"It's not tight, you silly girl, it's his model. You need to show your qualities to get a quick suitor. Look at how much breast to hide! With this war men will end and you will not have any if you keep hiding like this, you silly."
Said Lucinda trying to remove the cape from Cateline, who turned red with shame listening to her sister talking. Lucinda was always bold, it always made the house happy, it was her way.
"Did you do it on purpose?!"
Cateline asked, already stressing herself with the situation. She didn't like the idea of having to show herself to get attention. That was out of the question.
"Girls... stop it!"
Milenna spoke, approaching the two with the basket of vegetables.
"Cateline, you look beautiful, your father would be proud..."
She spoke with her eyes filled with tears. She still hadn't gotten over the loss of her husband.
"Who would have thought that time would pass so quickly... I pray every day that you will be happy, and that God will bless us with his grace..."
Milenna said, looking up, clasping her hand against her chest.
Everyone seems to be discouraged for a while, thinking about the situation the world is in, but soon that silence is broken by Lucinda, she pushes her sister towards the wagon in a hurry, the young woman did not want to waste time with regrets.
"Come on, come on...."
She said as she pushed her sister.
The girls' mother waved as she stayed behind to say goodbye to the girls.
"Be careful! And tell Mrs. Ellen I sent a hug..."
The girls waved back and got on the wagon. Who pulls it is an old horse that was their father's. He was trained and very efficient. Even old was the best horse they had on the farm.
"I can't believe we are going to a party!"
Lucinda said, as if she had never been to a party before.
"We always go to parties in the village Luci!"
Cateline spoke seriously, trying to hold the cloak that almost flew with the wind. It was already afternoon, and the weather was cooling.
"But this is different, right?"
Lucinda answered without lowering her spirits.
They rode the cart for about two hours until they reached the village; it was almost dusk when they organized the goods outside the wall, near the great gate of the castle there were several stalls set up improvisedly for the sale of goods, they were farmers, jewelers, seamstresses and workers trying to earn a change by selling their items to visitors who would come from afar to celebrate the return of Lord Sirio's children.
"Hello girls!"
They hear a voice coming from afar. When they look, they see it was Mrs. Ellen, a lady who owns one inn in the village.
"How are you, Mrs. Ellen? Mom sends her love"
Lucinda replied, running towards her and giving her a big hug.
Cateline follows soon after, giving her another hug.
"I see you're all dressed up today..."
Ellen says, looking at the girls and admiring them.
"You girls have grown up so fast."
She says, taking the girls' hands.
"Why the cape Cate?"
She asked, addressing Cateline.
"And just cold..."
Cateline tries to lie, so she doesn't have to explain, but her sister interrupts her and speaks in front of her.
Cateline sighed deeply, trying to keep her calm; all she wanted was to get back home soon. As she organized some baskets, the young woman heard a group of men leaving a nearby tavern. She overheard them talking about a hostage, but she didn't pay much attention. The tent she had set up with her sister was full of customers, and she couldn't focus much on her surroundings.
After a few minutes, her sister returned, carrying two full bottles of wine.
"Where did you get those drinks?" Cateline looked astonished. Lucinda already seemed to have had a bit to drink, and she appeared quite downcast about something.
"He wouldn't talk to me," Lucinda said, hugging the two bottles while holding back tears.
"Who, Luci?" Cateline asked, concerned.
"The eldest son of the Lord," Lucinda replied, sitting in a chair they had placed behind the tent and slumping over the makeshift table. "He just returned from a war, and I'm sure he has a lot on his mind."
"But... he was so close to me; he didn't even look at me, you know? I look so pretty, Cate, I got all dressed up," Lucinda said, turning the bottle to take a few more sips. She seemed quite upset about the encounter.
Quickly, Cateline took the drinks, realizing that her sister had reached her limit. "Look, I think you should go rest. I'll take care of things here; I'm almost done with the sales anyway."
Cateline helped Lucinda up, holding her by the arm. "I'll keep an eye on things from here. The inn is just ahead; enter through the main door and tell Mrs. Ellen that you need to go to bed. Here's your key."
Cateline watched from a distance as her sister entered the inn. After a few minutes, Mrs. Ellen came out to take Lucinda to the room in the back of the establishment.
Once she saw that her sister was safe, Cateline could relax a bit. There were only a few items left to sell: sweets, preserves, and the remaining bread. Cateline looked at the bottles of wine; they seemed good, and with each passing moment, they appeared even more delicious.
After a few seconds of hesitation, she gave in and took a few sips. At first, the taste wasn't as good as she had imagined, but after drinking a bit more, it seemed to improve. Cateline sold some jars and took another sip, sold a few more loaves of bread, and drank again. Before she knew it, she had finished an entire bottle, and her body was warming up to the point where she wondered whether she should take off her cloak.
Cateline decided to go to the cart, which was in a stable near the inn. She walked slowly to avoid stumbling, looking inside the cart and finding that there were no more goods. She breathed a sigh of relief and returned to the tent. She heard the sound of branches breaking from some of the bushes in the forest, but it was very dark, and the noise had been faint. Cate decided to ignore it, thinking it might just be a cat or some local animal. She went to her tent and started packing up her things.
It was still a bit early, but after drinking, her body felt drowsy. Cateline grabbed the second bottle and decided to have just a little more; it seemed like a waste to leave that bottle aside. Drinking the wine after packing everything, she walked to the inn. There were still many people celebrating in the streets, so it was quite noisy. She decided to go straight to her room.
Her body warmed up even more after finishing the second bottle. Cateline could no longer stand the old cloak covering her entire body; it was suffocating her. She looked around, and all that was behind the inn was the forest; there was no one nearby. She decided to take off the cloak, and it was a relief. Finally, Cate could feel the breeze against her body, refreshing her.
Just as she stopped and took off the cloak, she heard the noise again from among the trees and bushes.
Not understanding, she approached slowly, walking carefully as it was very dark and the alcohol was not helping her vision. Cateline saw something resembling a silhouette, someone very tall. She strained her eyes, but in the midst of the darkness, she couldn't make out any details.
"Hello?" Cateline asked softly, as if she didn't really want to be answered. However, the huge silhouette approached, emerging from the darkness. It was a strong and very tall man with slightly long, messy hair that reached his shoulders. His skin was fair, and although Cateline couldn't see well, she was sure that this man wasn't from around here. She noticed his clothing and the characteristics that seemed foreign. He looked a bit dirty and appeared injured. Perhaps he had fallen from a horse or something?
Cateline had never seen anyone like him. He must have been a foreigner who had come for the festival, as many allies were gathering to celebrate. He stood still, staring intensely at her without even blinking.
Cateline felt a little embarrassed, trying to cover her breasts with her hands and the exposed parts of her body with the cloak. The man approached slowly, seemingly limping.
Cateline could now see more clearly. He was injured, with cuts on his body and some broken ropes that had been tied around him. Her embarrassment disappeared instantly when she saw the man's injuries. She staggered toward him, and he remained silent, just looking at her fixedly.
Cateline struggled to stay upright and held onto the man, who was much larger than she was, even though she was a tall woman. She grabbed his shirt and used the cloak to cover him. The cuts looked painful, and Cateline wanted to help.
"Are you okay?" she asked with a shaky voice but a concerned tone. Cateline didn't understand why, but looking at the man, she felt drawn to him in some way, as if they had known each other for a long time, and an inexplicable sensation washed over her.
Despite his injuries, he seemed fine, at least that's what he conveyed to the young woman without saying a word.
"What's your name?" the man asked, his voice strong and unwavering.
"I-I'm Cateline... and yours?" Cateline replied slowly, her body not responding as well to her mind due to the alcohol.
Their bodies were very close, and Cateline, realizing this, timidly moved away slightly.
"I'm Felix."
After stating his name, he remained silent, just observing Cateline, who once again felt embarrassed when he focused on her breasts. Somehow, she could sense something coming from him, as if he were attracting her. Her body was getting hotter with each passing moment.
Cateline remembered that she had left the bottle on the ground when she went to take the cloak to Felix and went to drink a little more. She didn't know how to react to this situation. As she was about to take a sip, she was surprised by the man, who had quickly come to her side without her noticing. He had been standing right behind her, seemingly appearing out of nowhere.
