"Make sure you scrub the floors well enough, eh?" Matilda, the head servant, instructed before leaving the room. The moment she was out, Vivian groaned and stopped scrubbing. She was suddenly feeling dizzy from all the scrubbing she had been doing since 1am in the morning. And it was just 5pm, or close to that.
"Urgh!" She groaned in pain, as she threw away the brush and sat back on the floor. She looked around the room of the so-called princess she was suddenly cleaning. It hurt so bad that all this was supposed to be hers, but unfortunately, it wasn't.
"Make sure the roses are kept properly in the vase this time. I don't want any of those ugly looking flowers." She suddenly heard the familiar voice and sprang up from the floor immediately. At that point, she had to get back to work if she wanted to stay out of trouble this time.
Just a few seconds later, the door screamed open. Despite that, she still didn't stop scrubbing.
Slowly, the door went shut, and she didn't look up. By looking at the legs and colorful sandals worn, she already knew who had come into the room.
The sound of her footsteps hovered around as she took the steps slowly into the room. Soon enough, she could feel her presence behind her.
What was she planning to do this time? Vivian Wondered.
Suddenly, everywhere went dead silent except for the sound of her scrubbing. She was actually feeling so uneasy at the fact that she was still standing behind her and not a word had been made.
She moved her bucket of water to another side of the room that needed scrubbing. Immediately, she heard the sound of something pouring out on the floor behind her. Vivian stopped and turned to see what it was.
"Oops!" Nora chuckled, and dropped back the wine on the table which she was resting on. Yes, she had intentionally poured the tomato wine on the floor. And it was only to spite her, Vivian .
"Don't you think you should come over here and scrub this off?" Nora said, smirking. However, Vivian swallowed, and did as she said, without any argument.
When she got close, and was scrubbing, she observed Nora move away from the table and went back behind her. Again, she suddenly felt uneasy because she was never up to anything good. If she had spilled wine behind her at first, only God knows what she was going to do this second time.
Sadly, Vivian Couldn't turn back to find out what she was about to do. So, she just went on scrubbing, with great fear in her heart.
Unexpectedly, she felt a push from behind and fell, throwing the bucket of water, and at the same time hitting my forehead on the sharp edge of the smaller glass table right in front of me.
"Ouch!" She cried out in pain. Nora's shrilling laughter added to the pain she felt. The moment she pulled herself out, she felt the blood trickling down her forehead. It was gushing out so fast like the stream behind their lake house.
There was never a day Nora wouldn't torment her.
How could she be this wicked? Vivian Wondered.
Unfortunately, there was nothing she could do at that moment. Nothing but her holding in the pain and tears that threatened to spill.
"Don't tell me you aren't going to clean up this mess you just made?" She questioned, a smirk emerging on her face.
It was at that moment Vivianrealized that the water she had accidentally spilled had soaked up everywhere which meant extra work for her.
Vivian quickly forgot about the injury on her forehead and ran to get a mop to clean up the water which was still on the floor. She knew she was never going to get treated. Her stepmother wasn't going to allow that, neither was Nora. And unfortunately for her, she wasn't one of those wolves who had channeled their inner healing powers.
When she began to clean everywhere, she watched Nora crawl into her bed, sitting and watching her with all pleasure.
Vivian knew she was loving it as usual. But again, she decided not to pay too much attention to her.
"You know," she began to speak, at the same time playing with her hair. "You still have a lot of work to do right after this." She said, and Vivian wondered if she was just telling her, or if it was a question.
At first she said nothing. After all, she has been working for them all her life so what difference does it make now if there's extra work.
"Aren't you the one I'm talking to?" Nora fired at her immediately. And she could tell the change in her tone of voice. She sounded pissed, and irritated this time.
She stopped what she was doing and turned to look at her.
"I'm sorry Nora." Vivian apologized immediately.
Nora only let out a scoff just as she began to step down from her bed. Slowly, she took steps closer to her.
"Hold on. Did you just call me by my name?" She asked, staring daggers at her this time.
"I'm - I'm so - I'm sorry." Vivian stuttered. The fear of what she was going to do to her next gripped her.
"And you think sorry is enough for the disrespect?" She thundered.
"There you are, I've been looking all over for you." They both heard and turned towards the door only to see Vivian's stepmother, and Nora's mother, Ursula. "What is it? What did she do this time?" She asked the moment she walked over to them.
"Can you believe it mother? This wretched thing here disrespected me." Nora was quick to fill her mother in on what happened.
She watched with the fear lingering in her eyes how her stepmother stared at her for a long time. Only God knows what it was that she was thinking.
"And what do you plan on doing with her this time?" She asked Nora, her eyes still fixed on Vivian . Who dared not stare longer at her.
"Are you really asking me that? Punish her of course!" Nora yelled out to her mother.
She waited patiently to hear out the punishment she was going to get.
Was she going to get flogged a hundred times naked, outside, tied to the oak tree? Was she going to be made to scrub and watch everywhere and everything in the mansion? Or, was it going to be that she will have to be starved for a week, and locked in the dungeon? Which was it going to be so she could brace herself up? Vivian Wondered.
"We have guests coming, and it wouldn't be good for them to see a looking human like you." Her step mother began, taking her steps closer to her. "So, you will have to do all the cleaning and dishes in the kitchen and the guest's house. Make sure everywhere is spotless. And don't come out." She said,
Before she could think any better, Nora's whining interrupted.
"Just that, mother?" She half yelled. "Don't you think that's too small?"
"Oh, no darling. She has more to do just after the guests leave." She smiled at her, cupping her chin. "Now, let's get you all ready." She said, and together, they turned to leave the room.
Guests? Vivian Wondered. They hardly have guests.
"Oh," Nora stopped immediately and came back to meet her. "Just in case you're wondering who we're having as guests, today the most handsome and powerful Alpha of a wolf pack is coming to ask for my hand." She said, and zoomed off immediately.
Who was this handsome and powerful Alpha?
"You have to hurry soon. We don't want to keep the guests waiting." Alpha Cassius' grandfather said.
"Urgh! Please." He groaned as he helped Cassius to dress up. Cassius didn't bother telling him to slow down because he had already given him the reason why he was in a hurry to get him all dressed up.
But the truth of the matter is that Cassius actually hates the fact that he was getting mated to someone he really does not care about.
"Don't you think it's just too early or perhaps, quick of you to plan a mating ceremony? I mean, I didn't even get to know her yet." Alpha Cassius said to him, hoping he would understand him clearly this time.
"Nothing is too early son. Nothing is too quick. And besides, you know why we're doing this." He answered, and walked back behind Cassius. He was done dressing him.
He sighed and stood to think again for a few minutes. He was actually right. Cassius knew the reason why he had to get a mate earlier enough. But this wasn't about that.
"What's her name again, grandpa?" He asked him.
"Nora." He answered back.
"Yes, Nora." He repeated after him for confirmation. "Don't you think there's something wrong with her?" Cassius turned to ask him.
"Oh, come on. Not again with that." His grandfather groaned.
"I'm actually telling you what I feel. This is something that I can't just get out of my mind." Cassius said and walked back to sit on his bed.
His grandfather turned to look at him, and let out a deep sigh. He walked towards him, taking a seat beside his grandson, the Alpha.
"You do know why we're doing this right?" He asked again, and Cassius just nodded.
Alpha Cassius pack has been laced with an ancient curse, spanning from the sins of their great fathers who lived before them. Most times he's curious to know what might have been their sins. But whenever he asked, he got no befitting response from his grandfather or any of the elders.
The curse was that no member of their pack shall bear forth a child, alongside a great famine plaguing them. So, for a long while now, they've been getting food from the forest and the neighboring packs.
And unfortunately for him, the remedy to breaking this curse is to find a mate which his grandfather successfully did, but not one he ended up liking.
"Don't let any thoughts of negativity crawl into your mind. After the ceremony, you both can get to know each other. I can see that she's a loving girl by the way." He said and stood. Soon enough, he was out of the room.
Cassius knew that was his old man telling me to come out and join him.
He walked out after him, ready to get this done with and see the miracle that his grandfather expected to happen.
While he walked with Nora by his side towards the diviner who was going to bless them, he watched how everyone smiled at them. He bet they were all happy because they knew after mating her, the curse will be put to an end.
Most times he felt so sad that he was fixed with the responsibility of setting his pack free of the curse. Why couldn't his grandfather do it? Or, the elders? Or why couldn't they just perform any sacrifice?
Alpha Cassius found himself thinking about this most times. But in the end, it seemed he was the sacrificial lamb.
"It's time." The diviner announced the moment they were standing right in front of her. And immediately, everyone sat down.
Cassius looked over at Nora, and he could see how her face was beaming with smiles. He was pretty sure she was happy about the ceremony. And is it just him, or was she not just over excited about this whole thing?
God! Why was he not just feeling good about this union?
"Today, we're all gathered here to witness the joining together of our Alpha and his newly found mate. We -"
"STOP!" They suddenly heard. The voice was loud enough and came with full force, stopping everybody in their tracks.
"Shaman?" Cassius muttered. Most of his pack members had begun whispering to one another. He was pretty sure Nora wouldn't understand who she was or what was going on.
But, why was the great shaman here unannounced? They hadn't actually invited her. Was it because of that? Was she annoyed at that? Cassius just didn't want to believe there was a problem.
"Great shaman." His grandfather walked up to her.
"Move, Clay." She said with authority, pointing her staff at him. "I didn't come to see you." She said again. Her face didn't escape the stern look. Cassius' grandfather walked away just like she had said.
Her eyes quickly rested on Cassius and she began to take steps closer to him.
"Where's your sister?" She asked Nora, her eyes on her.
Sister? Cassius wondered. What was she saying? Cassius quickly turned to look at his grandfather. And he could see the look on his face. He was confused too.
Nora stuttered, not knowing what to say.
"Stop." The great shaman yelled at her. And everyone shook. Especially Nora.
Immediately, she turned back to face his grandfather.
"Who is this you brought here?" She asked.
"I don't get your question, great shaman. This is the destined mate to break the curse of course." His grandfather answered.
Surprisingly, the great shaman burst into an unexpected loud and shrilling laughter.
"This ceremony cannot be held." She said immediately, shocking everyone to the bones.
"What? Why?" Cassius' grandfather was the one to ask immediately. He was surprised, but he didn't bother asking. This was what Cassius wanted anyway. And it was good to find an end to it without him ending it by himself.
"This is not the direct descendant of the supernatural pack. You've been deceived." She let out, shocking the hell out of everyone.
Alpha Cassius turned immediately to look at Nora. But before he could even ask if the shaman was right, Nora fled away angrily.
"Welcome to the supernatural pack, Alpha Cassius". The sudden voice from behind him almost made him jump a foot in the air as he was not expecting it. He whirled around and saw that there were about six different servants bowing to him. How did they get there? He didn't even hear their footsteps.
"Your dinner is ready, Alpha Cassius". The door to his room opened and servants holding trays came in. Everything was happening so fast that he didn't even have the time to take a breath. He was yet to see those in charge of the pack and he had already been served dinner.
"What is your name?". He directed the question to the maid that caught his eye. He couldn't tell if it was because of how unique her white hair or ocean blue eyes were but there was something about her that drew him in. She didn't raise her head to look at him.
"You standing at the end of the line, yes, you. What's your name?" He asked again.
She finally raised her head but she didn't look in his eyes again.
"My name is Viv, Prince Cassius"
"Are you married?"
As she opened her mouth to respond to Alpha Cassius, the door to his room was thrown open and his attention was drawn that way.
"Cassius, my baby, I've missed you." A frown came upon Cassius' features at the person that practically ran into his room. She threw herself at him where he was seated on the couch and hugged him tight. He was frozen in his seat because of how weird that was.
"Baby, you look so lean. Why haven't you dug into your dinner yet?" He was still looking at Nora weirdly. Was it that she didn't remember what happened only a while back? Why was she throwing herself at him like they were lost lovers reuniting after a long time?
"So, tell me, baby, what have you been up to?"
"Uh, I was just trying to get to know that maid over there. She seems to be very good at her job".
Her eyes followed the direction of his hand to see who he was pointing at and when she saw who it was, her face changed. He noticed that but wrote it off as not important. She put her hand on his face to direct his eyes back to her.
"I want to say that I'm sorry for leaving so rudely. I don't know what came over me".
She was stroking his beard as she said that. Alpha Cassius nodded just for her to get off him and like she could read his mind, she did just that.
"I'll go run you a bath". She pecked his cheek before leaving. He shook his head to get her out of his mind and focused on the maid from before.
"You didn't answer my question. Are you married?"
"Cassius, why are you talking with the help? You don't have to pity them". He turned to face Nora who was leaning on the bathroom door and pouting her lips at him. That in itself was a very strange image because he had never seen her act like that.
"Anyway, forget about that. Would you like to have your bath or dinner first?" He decided to go with dinner first and she quickly attached herself to his side.
"Why don't I feed you?"
"I can feed myself, thank you". He took the spoon from her and took the covering off the plate of food that was before him.
"This tastes really nice. Did one of you cook this?" Cassius directed his question to the maids who were still standing at the corner of the room.
"Yes, Prince Cassius, I made it". The maid that introduced herself as Viv spoke.
"Did you go to culinary school? Because, this is the best pasta I've ever tasted. I love that you put in shrimps. It makes the flavor different". He smiled as he took another forkful while waiting for her reply.
"Cassius darling, why don't you have some water, hmmm? You know it's not the best to speak while eating". She raised a glass of water to his lips and practically forced the water through his mouth. He was starting to suspect her. Why was it that she didn't want him talking to the maids? He decided to try again to be sure that he wasn't reading too much into things.
"So, Viv, tell me. Is cooking all that you do?"
"Cassius baby, you really shouldn't be talking, you know? This is really spicy and I don't want you choking". So she was indeed trying to stop him from communicating with Viv. The question was why was she doing that?
He needed answers, but he decided to play a fool so as not to heighten the tension. But, deep down, he knew that whatever be it, he would still find his way to the maid. For some reason, he saw himself already attracted to her.
**********
"Make sure no one comes around here".
The guard that he greased his palm to get Viv to his room nodded and walked away. He looked up and down the hallway before closing the door behind her.
"Good day, Prince Cassius, you asked to see me". Vivian Inquired.
"Please, call me Cassius".
She looked up at him with a horrified look like he had just said something abominable. "I'm sorry Prince Cassius but I can't dream of calling you by your name alone".
"What is your full name, Viv?"
"Please, Prince Cassius, I would like to leave because I have some duties to attend to".
He didn't know why she was acting weird. All he wanted to know was her full name because a strange thought was taking shape in his mind when it came to her. If what he was thinking was right, it was going to explain Nora and her mother's behavior.
"Your full name, Viv".
She looked like a deer caught in headlights as she practically begged him with her eyes to allow her leave but he didn't budge. She wasn't going anywhere until he got all the information he wanted and more.
"You're keeping me waiting". When she realized that he wasn't going to let her go, her shoulders fell.
"My full name is Vivian Achilles".
Wait. Vivian Achilles? Wasn't Achilles the name of the past supernatural pack head? Could she be his daughter? He looked her over from head to toe. That wasn't possible.
"Do you have any affiliation with the last pack head?"
She immediately clammed up and looked away.
"Vivian , I asked you a question".
"Please, Prince Cassius, just let me go so that I can return to my duties". Her response and tone were enough for him to realize that she was indeed his daughter but if that was the case, why was she working as a maid? She was meant to be the one leading the pack as the last true descendant.
"How are you a maid? Are you trying to disguise yourself for some reason? Is your life in danger?"
He shot question after question because from what he just learnt, it meant that she was the one he was meant to be with. If she truly was the last descendant, then, she was the one that was going to lift the curse on his pack. She remained tight-lipped.
"You're not stepping your foot out of this room until you tell me everything so the earlier you start talking, the better for both of us".
"Please, Prince Cassius, there are matters that we cannot meddle with. Please, just let me be". She kept looking at the door like she was about to break into a run for it.
"You really want to leave?" She nodded rapidly. Alpha Cassius walked towards the door, turned the key in the lock, made sure the door was properly locked, took the keys away and put them in his pocket.
"You're not leaving until you tell me all that I need to know". The fate of his pack was resting on her shoulders and he was not going to let things just go like that.
"Okay, what do you want to know?"
Good. She was on board with him now.
"Let's start with why you're working as a maid instead of occupying the position that's been yours from the time of your conception". He said to her, he was adamant enough, and he was so sure that she understood that.
Within a few minutes, Vivian poured out her soul to him, suddenly becoming so vulnerable as she told him all that had transpired between her and her alleged family.
He suddenly walked up to where she was standing and touched her shoulder. She jumped a foot in the air and put some distance between them
.
"What are you doing?" She asked inquisitively.
"Vivian, I'm attracted to you. From the moment I set my eyes on you, you've not left my mind. I like you".
"Please, Alpha Cassius, I don't know what you want from me but I would prefer to rather leave".
"Why do you want to leave? I would like to have a longer conversation with you. I love your voice and I want to hear you speak more". She looked away from him and focused on something behind her. He turned to see what she was looking at but there was nothing there. She just didn't want to look at him.
"Fine. You don't want to look at me. But just know this, it would not stop me from loving you." Cassius said to her.
He was going to have her by all means whether or not her stepmother and sister liked it.
She was his to claim!!!
