Chapter 1

I gave up a prestigious scholarship to Zurich to become the architect of the Obsidian Pack, believing Alpha Emilio was my Fated Mate. I spent four years building his walls, his training grounds, and his legacy, waiting for the Mark that never came.

On the night I planned to tell him I was pregnant with his heir, he stood on the dais and publicly gave my custom-designed Luna bracelet to his mistress's son.

Desperate and heartbroken, I stepped forward to reveal the truth about our baby. Emilio didn't offer comfort. Instead, he used the Alpha Command.

"Sit down, Elana."

The force of his voice was a physical blow. It threw me off the stage and slammed me onto the stone floor. The impact didn't just break my body; it severed the life of our unborn pup.

As I lay bleeding out, Emilio didn't look at me with regret. He shielded his mistress, Hayden, from the sight of my pain.

"Get her out of here," he told the guards coldly. "If she dies as a Rogue in the woods, it's just nature."

He thought he was discarding a broken tool. He thought I would die in the river.

He didn't know that I would wash up on the shores of the Silver Alps.

He didn't know that their Alpha, the most powerful wolf in Europe, had been admiring my designs-and me-from afar for years.

Three months later, I returned to the Obsidian Pack.

I didn't come back to build his walls. I came back to tear them down.

Chapter 1

Elana POV

The scent of graphite and aged parchment usually served as my sanctuary, grounding me in lines and logic. But tonight, the air in the drafting room reeked of anxiety-acrid and sharp.

My fingers were stained a smudge of charcoal gray as I smoothed out the final blueprint for the Obsidian Pack's new northern defense wall.

It was a masterpiece of engineering, if I did say so myself. Hidden ballistae, reinforced concrete facings textured to mimic natural granite, and escape tunnels calibrated narrowly enough that only a wolf in human form could slip through.

"It's brilliant, Elana," Ayla whispered, leaning over the drafting table. As the Pack's Beta female, her approval carried weight, but as my only real friend, her concern carried more. "Truly. The Council will have to acknowledge you this time."

"I don't need the Council," I murmured, my eyes darting to the heavy oak doors of the meeting hall. "I just need him."

The doors swung open.

Alpha Emilio strode out, and his presence hit the room like a physical shockwave-a wall of heat and dominance. He smelled of rain-soaked earth and ozone-a scent that used to make my inner wolf purr with instinctive contentment. Now, it just made her pace in jagged, nervous circles.

He walked past the table, his gaze sliding over the intricate drawings that had cost me three weeks of sleepless nights without truly seeing them.

"Emilio," I started, my voice trembling slightly. "The northern wall designs. They are ready."

He didn't stop. He didn't even slow down. He just reached out, his large hand brushing the top of my head in a gesture one might use for a well-behaved golden retriever.

"Good job, Luna," he murmured, his voice low and smooth.

*Luna.*

The word hung in the air, a shimmering, empty promise. He called me that in private, or when he needed something, but I had no Mark on my neck. No ceremony. Just a title whispered in the dark to keep me compliant.

"He didn't even look at it," Ayla hissed as Emilio walked away, disappearing down the corridor. "Elana, you gave up the scholarship to the Zurich Academy for this? To be his glorified architect?"

"He's my Fated Mate, Ayla," I said, rolling up the parchment, though my hands shook so hard the paper crinkled. "He's just busy. Being Alpha is a heavy burden."

"He's not too busy for *her*," Ayla muttered darkly.

I ignored her. I had to. Because if I listened, the cracks in my heart would shatter wide open.

I forced myself to remember college. The first time I Shifted, my bones breaking and rearranging in agony. Emilio had been there. He had wrapped me in his jacket, his scent anchoring me to reality. *I will give you a home,* he had promised. *Build our future, Elana.*

So I built. I built the packhouse extension. I built the training grounds. And tonight, I had built the wall that would keep us safe.

Later that evening, the air in the Great Hall was thick with anticipation. I stood near the back, clutching a small velvet box in my pocket. Inside was a positive pregnancy test.

I was going to tell him tonight. A pup. An heir. He couldn't ignore this. Blood was the strongest bond of all.

Emilio stood on the dais, looking magnificent under the chandeliers. But he wasn't looking for me.

Hayden stood near the front. She was an Omega, delicate and wide-eyed, everything I wasn't. I was sturdy, my hands rough from work, my skin often stained with ink. She was pristine, untouched by labor. She looked at Emilio with a worshipful gaze that made my stomach churn.

"Tonight," Emilio's voice boomed, enhanced by his Alpha aura, "we celebrate the future of the Obsidian Pack."

My heart leaped. Was he going to announce our mating? Finally Mark me?

"Come here, Leo," Emilio said, his voice softening.

A small boy, Hayden's son, scrambled up the stairs. He was five years old, with messy hair and a toothy grin. Emilio knelt before him.

"A leader needs a strong legacy," Emilio announced. He pulled something from his pocket.

It glittered in the firelight. A bracelet made of woven silver and moonstones.

I gasped, the sound sucked from my lungs. I knew every twist of that silver wire. I had designed that bracelet. I had drawn the sketch on a napkin three years ago, telling Emilio it was what I wanted to wear when I officially became Luna.

Emilio fastened it around the boy's small wrist.

"To Leo," Emilio declared. "My... ward. And the future of this pack."

The room went silent. My inner wolf let out a low, confused whine. That was *my* bracelet. That was *our* promise.

I stepped forward, my legs moving before my brain could stop them. "Emilio?"

The crowd parted. I saw Hayden lean down to Leo, whispering something in his ear.

The boy pointed a chubby finger at me and screamed, his voice shrill and piercing. "Go away! Give back my dad!"

The words hit me like stones. *Dad?*

"Emilio," I choked out, stepping onto the dais. "What is this? That bracelet... you said..."

Emilio stood up. His eyes were cold. There was no love in them. Only annoyance.

"Not now, Elana," he growled.

"Not now?" I pulled the velvet box from my pocket. "I'm pregnant, Emilio! We are having a pup! And you give *my* Luna token to her son?"

Gasps rippled through the hall. Hayden's face twisted into a mask of horror. "She's lying! She's trying to trap you, Alpha!"

"I am not!" I shouted, the wolf in me rising, angry and hurt. I took another step toward him.

"Enough!" Emilio roared.

The air pressure in the room dropped instantly, sucking the oxygen from the space.

"Sit down, Elana."

It was the Alpha's Command.

It wasn't a request. It was a sledgehammer to my will. My knees didn't just bend; they collapsed under the weight of his magic. My body obeyed the compulsion with violent force. I was thrown backward, off the edge of the dais.

I didn't just sit. I crashed.

I hit the stone floor hard. A sharp, tearing pain ripped through my abdomen, hotter than fire, colder than ice-a severance of something vital.

"Ah!" I screamed, curling into a ball.

Warmth spread between my legs. The metallic scent of copper-blood-filled the air.

My inner wolf howled, a sound of pure desolation. The tiny spark of life I had felt for weeks... flickered and went out.

I looked up through a haze of tears. Emilio was standing at the edge of the dais. He wasn't looking at me with regret. He was looking at Hayden, shielding her and Leo from the scene, his hand resting protectively on the boy's shoulder.

"Get her out of here," Emilio said, his voice devoid of emotion. "Clean this up."

Darkness swarmed the edges of my vision. The last thing I saw was the moonstone bracelet glittering on the wrist of the boy who called my mate "Dad."

Chapter 2

Elana POV

The acrid sting of antiseptic burned the inside of my nose. It was a stark, sterile contrast to the metallic tang of blood that still lingered in my memory.

I stared at the ceiling of the Healer's ward. It was white. Blank. Just like the future I thought I had.

My womb felt hollow. It wasn't just a physical emptiness; it was a spiritual void. The bond with the pup-that tiny, fragile thread of gold-was gone. Severed by the Alpha's Command.

The door creaked open. Emilio walked in.

He looked impeccable. Not a hair out of place, his suit crisp and pressed. He smelled of her-of vanilla and cloying sweetness. My inner wolf didn't purr. She curled her lip, baring her teeth in the back of my mind.

"Elana," he said, walking to the bedside. He reached for my hand.

I didn't move. I didn't pull away. I just let my hand lie there, a dead thing in his warm grip.

"It was an accident," he said. His voice was smooth, practiced. "I didn't know you were... delicate. You shouldn't have rushed the dais. You startled Leo."

*I startled Leo.*

"I lost the baby, Emilio," I whispered. My voice sounded like dry leaves scraping over concrete.

He sighed, patting my hand with a condescending rhythm. "It's for the best, really. The pack is unstable right now. We discussed this. It wasn't the right time for an heir."

"You gave Leo my bracelet."

"It's just jewelry, Elana. Don't be petty. Hayden has had a hard life. The boy needed comfort." He leaned down, brushing his lips against my forehead. I felt bile rise in my throat. "I'll buy you another one. Something better. Gold, maybe."

He pulled back, checking his watch. "I have to go. Council meeting. Rest up. We need those blueprints for the western watchtower by Friday."

He turned and left. Just like that.

"You bastard!"

Ayla burst into the room the moment Emilio walked out. She shoved past him, her shoulder checking his chest. He barely flinched, just cast her a warning glare before disappearing down the hall.

"Elana," Ayla sobbed, rushing to my side. She grabbed my face in her hands. "I'm so sorry. I tried to stop them. The Guardians held me back."

"It's okay," I said. And it was terrifying, because I meant it. I didn't feel sad anymore. I felt... clear.

Pain is a powerful lens. It burns away the fog.

"Did you hear him?" I asked Ayla. "He said it wasn't the right time for an heir. But Leo calls him Dad."

Ayla looked away, biting her lip.

"Tell me," I commanded.

"There are rumors," she whispered. "That Leo isn't just a ward. That he's... his."

I closed my eyes. The pieces clicked together like the tumblers of a lock. The late nights. The 'business trips.' The way he looked at that boy.

*Mind-Link connection opening...*

I caught a fragment of a thought. It wasn't directed at me, but the bond between Fated Mates, even rejected ones, sometimes leaked like a faulty pipe.

*...she's finally out of the way. The bracelet looks so good on him, Emilio. You promised me the Luna suite...*

It was Hayden's voice. Purring in his mind.

I opened my eyes. On the bedside table sat a small wooden wolf I had carved for Emilio for our first anniversary. He kept it on his desk. Now, it was here. Dumped with my personal effects.

He had erased me from his office.

I sat up. The pain in my abdomen flared, sharp and cruel, but I ignored it.

"Ayla," I said. "I need you to bring me my drafting bag."

"You're going to work?" she asked, incredulous.

"No," I said, swinging my legs over the edge of the bed. My hospital gown was thin, but I felt a strange heat rising in my chest. "I'm leaving."

"Leaving the hospital?"

"Leaving the Pack."

Ayla's eyes widened. "Elana, you're a Beta. You can't survive as a Rogue. And the Alpha... he won't let you go. You design everything here."

"He broke the bond," I said, my voice steady. "When he used the Command on a pregnant mate... he broke the sacred trust. My wolf doesn't recognize him anymore."

I looked at the wooden carving. I picked it up and threw it into the trash bin. It landed with a hollow thud.

"I am not a tool, Ayla. And I am certainly not a replacement for his mistress."

I stood up, swaying slightly as gravity reasserted itself. "Help me pack. I need to be gone before the moon rises."

Chapter 3

Elana POV:

I didn't make it out before moonrise.

The Pack Gala was mandatory. Emilio had dispatched a Guardian to my hospital room with a dress-a slate-grey slip of a thing designed to blend into the shadows.

*Fitting,* I thought, fingering the dull fabric. *He wants me to be invisible.*

I entered the ballroom, my body held together by painkillers and sheer, unadulterated spite.

The room was glittering with lights. Laughter bubbled up like cheap champagne. And in the center of the vortex was Hayden.

She wore red. A deep, blood-red silk that clung to her curves like a second skin. On her neck sat a diamond necklace I had never seen before. She held court, with wolves fawning over her as if she were already Luna.

I stayed anchored by the wall, Ayla gripping my elbow for support.

"Look at her," Ayla hissed. "She's practically gloating."

Hayden spotted me. Her eyes lit up with malicious delight. She excused herself from her circle and sauntered over, a glass of wine dangling dangerously in her hand.

"Elana," she cooed. "You look... tired. Shouldn't you be resting? After your... accident?"

"It wasn't an accident," I said, my voice low.

Hayden stepped closer, invading my personal space. She smelled of Emilio-cedar and rain. It made my skin crawl.

"You know," she whispered, her voice too low for anyone else to hear. "Emilio and I go way back. College. Sophomore year."

I froze. "We met in college. Junior year."

Hayden smirked. "Exactly. He found me first. But I was an Omega. Weak. He needed someone... useful. Someone to build his little empire while he secured his power." She tapped a manicured fingernail against my chest, right over my heart. "You were the shield, sweetie. I was the heart."

The world tilted on its axis.

It wasn't just an affair. It was the blueprint of our entire existence. Every kiss, every promise, every architectural plan I drew-it was all to build a kingdom for *her*.

"He used the Fated Mate bond," I whispered, horror dawning on me. "He felt the pull... and he used it to manipulate me."

"Fated Mates," Hayden scoffed. "Biology. Instinct. Emilio is a man of logic. He chose love over instinct. He chose *me*." She leaned in, her breath hot on my ear. "Leo is five. You do the math."

Five years. We had been together for four.

He had cheated on me before we had even officially started.

Just then, a squeal cut through the music.

"Mommy! Daddy!"

Leo ran across the dance floor. He was still wearing the moonstone bracelet. It dangled loosely on his small arm. He ran straight to Emilio, who scooped him up in his arms.

"There's my big man," Emilio said, kissing the boy's cheek.

The room went silent. This was a public declaration. An Alpha holding a child like that... claiming him.

Emilio looked up. His eyes met mine across the room.

For a heartbeat, I saw panic. He put Leo down quickly, smoothing his suit jacket. He started walking toward me, his hand raised as if to explain.

"Elana, wait-"

I didn't wait. I turned my back on him.

"Elana!" he barked.

I kept walking. The connection-that deep, spiritual tug that usually pulled me toward him-was screaming in agony. But my mind was silent. Cold.

Ayla was right beside me. "Let's go."

"No," I said, stopping at the double doors. "I need to do this."

I turned back. Emilio had stopped halfway across the floor, Hayden clutching his arm, whispering furiously. He looked torn. Not between two loves, but between his useful tool and his true desire.

I looked at Leo. The bracelet glittered, mocking me. It was a symbol of the moon, of the Luna's protection. And he had given it to the product of his betrayal.

*You were just a placeholder,* my inner wolf whimpered, curled into a ball of misery. *We were never the Luna. We were the staff.*

"I'm done building his walls," I told Ayla. "It's time to tear them down."

I threw my weight against the doors and walked out into the night air. It was cold, biting. It felt like freedom.

But freedom has a price.

"Where do you think you're going?"

Hayden's voice came from behind me. I turned. She stood on the steps, Leo hiding behind her legs. Emilio was nowhere to be seen.

"Away from you," I said.

"You can't leave," she sneered. "Emilio needs the western tower finished. And the nursery. You think you can just walk away? He's the Alpha. He owns you."

"He owns nothing of me," I spat.

"Leo," Hayden said, looking down at her son. "Tell the nasty woman what Daddy said."

The boy peeked out. "Daddy said... Daddy said you have to stay in the basement until you learn to be nice."

My blood ran cold. The basement. The Pack prison.

"Is that the plan?" I asked, my voice shaking. "Lock me up and force me to draw?"

"Whatever it takes," Hayden smiled. "Guardians."

Two large wolves shifted from the shadows, blocking my path.

I was trapped.
