Chapter 1 One

Jayden

"We're here."

I raised my head to confirm our location as the driver announced our arrival. My best friend and beta, Lewis was with me, and we were both attending the party of the daughter of one of my favourite investors.

The Graysons are known all around the East Blue as the third-richest family in the kingdom. They are revered by everyone in the East Blue because of the wealth they possess.

Grayson's family only has one daughter, Elena and she has just come of age. A party was thrown in respect of this, and I was invited as the Alpha of the pack.

I would have turned down the invitation if my uncle hadn't insisted that I accept the invitation.

I mean, why should I attend the banquet?

Elena is a spoiled brat who thinks the whole world evolves around her. I never wanted anything to do with her nor did I want her around me.

However, the situation is such that I have to attend this party as her father is an important investor in my company and I wouldn't want him at loggerheads with me.

Putting on the best smile I could muster. I stepped out of the car. I adjusted my bow tie and brushed my hand through my hair.

When I was certain that I looked good, I stepped out of the car and headed towards the entrance.

I chose to make an entrance into the party through the back door because I wanted to keep myself hidden.

I was never a party freak.

I like my space and enjoy my privacy, but in this case, I had no choice but to attend. I had to honour the invitation.

Dressed in a black suit and white shirt, Lewis looked dashing as he stepped out beside me.

"You should smile a little more, Jayden, you don't want to go about announcing your lack of interest through your face. It's a party and you should look happy."

He was right.

I should look happy, but how?

How do I look happy when I am displeased about my presence at this party?

I nodded in response to his advice and adjusted my trousers before moving inside.

I was dressed in a blue tuxedo paired with a white shirt and black shoes. My brown hair was styled as a Caesar cut.

Even though I wasn't happy to attend the party, I had to look good.

"Hi, baby."

I looked behind me to see Melissa Aubrey, my girlfriend and would-be-chosen Luna.

Melissa is the daughter of an oil mogul. Her father is one of the richest men in East Blue and her immense beauty was proof of that.

"Hi," I replied, nonchalantly.

"You look dashing in that, Jay," she smiled as she pointed at my outfit.

"Be respectful. This is a public gathering," Lewis cautioned and she rolled her eyes.

"Alright."

Melissa didn't seem to take that well, but she also didn't dwell on the topic.

Lewis and Melissa never get along and I wonder why.

Neither of them like the other.

"Let's get a place to sit," Melissa intertwined her hand with mine as she led me to a private seating space.

"Welcome Alpha Jayden," Lady Estrella appeared to greet me.

She is Elena's mother. The wife of Felix Grayson, and the owner of Greyson Pharmaceuticals, the largest firm in the field.

Here in East Blue, the Graysons owned the biggest pharmaceutical company.

"Thank you, Estrella," I smiled in response.

"I'm glad you made it," she flaunted her hair and swayed her hips as she stepped aside for me to see the figure lingering behind her.

"Elena says hi." She said, ushering her daughter forward.

"Welcome to my party, Alpha Jayden," Elena muttered in her strange guttural voice.

The lady has strange, yet funny features. She was beautiful, no doubt, but her outlook was amusing.

She had short hair with curls. Her brows were thick and full. With full lips that were as red as roses. However, for someone with such beautiful facial features, Elena had a masculine physique and guttural voice.

"Happy birthday, lady Elena," I muttered in a low voice, as I tried as much as I could to stop myself from laughing.

I just can't help laughing every time I see her. She was like a combination of both genders. She was more like a man than a woman.

Even though the makeup made her look beautiful and her heavily studded Red dress made her look like a princess, it couldn't change her manly figure.

"You look beautiful as always," I muttered as I checked her out.

"Thank you, Alpha," she curtsied.

"We'll be around, Alpha," Estrella led the way and Elena followed as they went to welcome the other guests.

"Was she that beautiful?" Melissa taunted as soon as they were gone. "You couldn't stop staring."

Beautiful?

Is she kidding me?

I was only staring at Elena because I couldn't stop wondering how she ended up with such horrifying beauty, but it seemed to have made Melissa jealous.

I can't speak out my reason for staring at Elena either, so I just pacify her.

"I wasn't staring you know. I was just....."

Before I could complete whatever explanation I had for Melissa, I felt my heart tighten and I could barely breathe.

"Excuse me," I turned away from her before she could notice that something was wrong.

I was a guest at the party and it wouldn't look good if I ruined Elena's party. Estrella definitely wouldn't go easy on me.

I released my bowtie as I walked out of the party hall.

I needed air.

I gasped for air as soon as I got outside, but I became restless. It felt as if I wasn't in control of my body anymore.

What is wrong with me? I wondered as I walked further outside.

I have never felt that way before.

My wolf seemed to want to jump out. He was restless as well and I was finding it difficult to hold it down.

I tried to listen to the voice of my wolf and I was surprised to hear what it had to say.

'Mate,' my wolf cried.

Mate?

Could my mate be among the guests here?

I spent years waiting for my mate but she was nowhere to be found.

Not that it mattered to me who my mate was, but I just wanted to see who the goddess had chosen for me.

When I didn't get my mate, I took my relationship with Melissa further and even proposed to her.

She was everything I wanted in a woman. Strong, beautiful, sexy and daredevil. My exact type of woman.

Why did my mate have to show up now?

I walked further to at least get a glimpse of this mate of mine as my wolf wouldn't rest until he saw her.

So, I followed her scent and arrived at the entrance of the Grayson Mansion. I looked around in search of her and the scent brought me to a small house.

I wouldn't say it's a house, it looks more like a pen...where dogs are kept.

Could my mate be a vet?

Or why am I being drawn to a pen? Could she be in there?

Letting my wolf take the lead, I went towards the pen and noticed that a man was about to lock it. I hurried my steps and went towards the pen like I was possessed.

I tossed the man aside and leaned forward to take a look inside the pen.

I was shocked to see a pregnant dog and a young girl.... lady. Crouched on all fours like a dog.

Her hair was unkempt and rough. Her tongue was out as she breathed through her mouth like a dog. Her eyes dilated warily as soon as she saw me. She opened her mouth and I expected her to speak but I was stunned by the sound she made.

She barked.

I flinched and stepped backwards, too surprised to speak.

What the hell?

How could she bark like that?

My heart raced as she raised her limbs and continued barking.

What is she? I watched in awe.

Is she a human or a dog?

Could she have been born to a dog? Is that even possible?

My mind was filled with thoughts of all kinds as I watched her, and just when I thought I had gotten enough surprises for one day, my wolf jumped and screamed,

'Mate!'

Chapter 2 Two

Zoraya

"Who is that?"

I sat in my room outside the gate and watched as the guests came in. It was Elena's birthday and a party had been thrown to celebrate her coming of age.

Everyone kept looking at the cubicle where I had come to call my room. Even though there were several rooms in the house, that cubicle was the place I knew as my room.

I spent my whole life sleeping in the cubicle alongside our dog, Zara.

Even though, I always wondered why I was made to stay in the cubicle with Zara when I have the same qualities as everyone that stays in the main house.

However, I couldn't dare ask.

Besides, no one understands me in the house. Every time, I speak, they say that I'm barking. I always wonder why they say so.

The only person who understands me is Zara. She does everything I say without hesitating and when she speaks, I understand too.

I looked at the faces of the guests as they saw me feeding on my plate, the same one I shared with Zara.

They wrinkled their nose in disgust and kept muttering words I couldn't understand.

Ignoring them, I continued eating as I knew that it was a one-time opportunity to be fed so heavily. Even though the food was leftover from the party, it felt nice to eat something delicious.

I cracked the bones happily as I danced with the joy of eating such delicacies.

"So disgusting!"

"Will you look at that?"

"How did the Graysons come across such crap?"

The guests kept saying all kinds of things but it was of no concern to me as I'm used to such treatment and words.

I continued eating as I knew that it was a privilege that didn't come every day.

'Do you want some more?' Zara asked in our invented language.

I call it our invented language since only Zara and I understand the language.

Zara was heavily pregnant yet she never ceased to care for me. She gives me half of her food every time.

'I do,' I replied swiftly.

The food was so delicious that I couldn't get enough of it.

'You can have it,' Zara passed her food to me.

The only affection I have ever received in my whole life was from Zara. She's the only one who has always treated me like I was something special.

'Thank you,' I muttered joyfully.

'Anything for you, my dear.'

If there's anyone who has stood as a mother to me, then it's Zara. All my life she has always been there for me. Giving me all the care and love that I need.

"Julius, lock the Pen!"

That voice belonged to none other than the lady of the house. The Mistress of the Manor, Estrella Grayson.

Estrella ma'am is a beautiful woman with a strong and commanding demeanour. Her grey eyes give her an innocent and sweet look that people would often mistake her for an angel.

But Estrella is no angel.

She is the devil in a woman's body.

Her cruelty is like no other. She ruled the house after the sudden disappearance of the master, and everyone was forced to obey her.

Julius, Estrella's lap dog closed the door of the cubicle as ordered, locking me and Zara inside.

We already knew that we weren't welcome at the party, they didn't have to make it so obvious.

How could we be welcomed? We have always been treated like animals and this party was thrown to celebrate, Elena, the young mistress of the Manor.

Elena is Master Felix and Estrella's only daughter.

She was treated like a princess and everything she wanted was given to her on a golden platter.

Sometimes, I wish I get half the treatment that is given to Elena, but I know that it is just my wishful thinking. A dream that can never come true.

I mean how can I be treated half as a princess? I am just a... I do not even know what I am. I only know that I exist.

"You should be on your best behaviour, we have guests around," Julius muttered as he locked the pen.

'Haven't we always been in our best behaviour?' I asked, but I got a knock on my head instead.

"Don't you bark at me, you animal!" Julius yelled as he rained several knocks on my head. "I just asked you to behave and you're misbehaving, do you want to get punished?"

'Let him be,' Zara warned.

I mellowed at her warning.

I mean, we both knew how harsh Julius could be when he decided to punish us. Me, especially. He flogs me with a thick plank while he pulls hard at my ear.

'Okay,' I laid down quietly and succumbed to fate.

What could we do anyway?

The harder we fight, the more punishment we get.

Julius would do anything to get into Estrella's good book. He could kill for her without batting an eyelid.

How can I expect mercy from such a man?

Zara licked my hair as I lay down. She did this to soothe my bleeding heart; her way of consoling me.

I grumbled my appreciation. I was glad to have her by my side.

Suddenly, I felt strange.

My body convulsed and I couldn't breathe. I felt itchy at the same time. I rubbed my body on the floor itching my skin against the walls of the cubicle.

'What is wrong?' Zara asked worriedly.

'I feel strange,' I explained as I continued to itch my body.

'Help!' Zara screamed. Her voice was laced with worry as she screamed. 'Please help my child!' She screamed out loud.

Did she just call me her child?

My eyes were immediately laced with tears. I couldn't explain how I felt. I was happy to hear someone claimed ownership over me.

"Didn't I just ask you both to behave?" Julius was back again, now furious. He pointed at Zara with rage. "And here I thought you were gentle."

'She needs help,' Zara rounded me as she explained.

"You won't stop, right?" Julius didn't care to listen to Zara or try to understand what she was saying.

He took the plank and flogged her, continuously. I couldn't stand it anymore.

How could he beat her so mercilessly?

I jumped and attacked Julius who threw me carelessly across the wall. My body jerked and I felt my head spin.

'Don't hurt her,' I begged as I tried to go to Zara who was now bleeding.

I was weak from the fall, but I managed to crawl back to Zara. She needed me now more than ever.

"You better behave or you'll get more of that," he started bolting the cubicle.

He didn't even look at Zara who was now bleeding.

'Please help her,' I tried to speak to him, making sure that my voice was low to avoid bringing more punishment upon us.

"Excuse me," I heard a strange yet interesting voice say from a little far away.

I liked the voice.

I wonder who it was that sounded so lovely.

The voice became louder as he seemed to be getting closer to the cubicle. Accompanying the voice was an amazing scent. I have never smelled anything like it before.

It smelled like sandalwood and mint.

Temporarily forgetting my plight, I looked up quickly, hoping to see the one who bore such an amazing scent.

I was met with two lovely sets of amber eyes as soon as I raised my head. The man looked so cute in his outfit and his haircut completed his beauty.

'Help please,' I muttered.

I didn't know why I thought he could help us, but something in me urged me to speak to him.

His eyes stared at me as I spoke and he flinched in shock. My heart sank as he moved backwards.

He is just like the others.

He also doesn't understand me.

Chapter 3 Three

Jayden

'Mate'

My wolf screamed in my head, making me gasp in surprise.

What in the goddess' name!

I took several steps away from the Pen as I tried to process what just happened.

How could that be possible?

Of all the places in the world, I had to find my mate in Grayson's mansion. And of all the creatures in the world...I got a...human-dog as my mate.

I was shocked beyond words. I didn't know what to say or how to react. It all felt like a joke. A big terrible joke.

I stood upright and hurried away from the Pen. The man stared at me with fury as he struggled to get up.

"Aren't you Alpha Jayden?" He asked as he finally locked the Pen.

"What is that?" I found myself asking.

Even though the answer was clear, I just needed a third-party opinion just in case everything was from my imagination.

"I am," I tried to sound bold.

"Hello Alpha," he bowed.

"What is this thing?" I pointed at the Pen.

"It's the home for the Graysons' dogs."

Well, it is a Pen indeed.

"But that...that...girl," I stuttered.

I didn't know how to qualify her. Is she a dog or a human?

"That's Zoraya, she's our....."

Before he could finish the sentence, he was called in by Estrella.

"Pardon me, Alpha, I have to go," he bowed before leaving my presence.

I watched the Pen in amazement and moved forward once again to take a look at the creature in the Pen.

She looks exactly like a human, but why is she barking like a dog? And why is she living in the Pen like a dog?

I took one last look at the cubicle and my wolf mellowed as he repeated those words that I dreaded.

'Mate.'

How can this thing be my mate?

No one must know about this. I left the place hurriedly and went back to the car. Leaving Lewis behind, I drove back home.

I went straight to my room to take a bath. I needed to get that horrible sight out of my head.

What the hell does the goddess think of herself?

How could she pair me up with something like that?

I opened the shower and unleashed the cold water on my head to help me erase the horrible picture of that...dog...girl...

I don't even know what to call her. I just want her out of my head.

However, as fast as she was able to calm my restlessness, it all returned as soon as I was out of her sight.

Shit!

I clutched my chest as I gasped for breath. What is this? I wondered.

I hurried out of the bathroom and changed into something casual. I wore something extremely light, to help get more air into my body and I kept my mouth open to help get more air into my lungs.

"Alpha," I heard a loud knock on the door.

After struggling for the goddess knows how long, I was finally able to get up. I opened the door and Lewis came in.

"Why did you leave without telling me?" He sounded worried, yet angry at the same time.

"I needed rest so I came home to get it," I lied.

Lewis studied me and noticed that I was bothered by something. He came closer to me, his eyes locked on mine.

"Is that why you came home or....." He left his question hanging as he came closer to me. "....Did something happen?"

I raised my head abruptly.

Did he find out?

No. I shook my head immediately. Nobody knew what happened out there and no one should know.

"What do you mean?" I feigned ignorance, pretending not to understand what he was saying.

"Did you...."

Before he could speak further, I turned away.

"I would like to rest, Lewis, please leave me."

I had to discharge Lewis otherwise he would become suspicious. He is my best friend after all, and he knows when I'm distressed or unhappy.

"Alright Alpha," he bowed.

I watched him leave and I went back to lie on my bed but all I saw was the scene from earlier. I tried to connect with my wolf to ask why he chose something so outrageous as his mate, but my wolf was quiet.

He did not respond to my call.

Even though I know that my wolf was not at fault, he was also a victim of the goddess' cruel game. However, I couldn't stop being pissed by the entire scenario.

What the freaking hell?

I am Jayden Cole, Alpha of Blood Moon Pack. How can I have that thing as my mate?

It's a good thing that I chose Melissa as my Luna. What would have happened if I was waiting for my supposed mate? Will I be forced to spend the rest of my life with that thing?

No way.

I feel so disgusted by the thought.

As soon as my mind drifted to the scene from earlier, my wolf became restless. He lingered on the surface, struggling to take charge.

I managed to suppress him but I couldn't stop my raging heart. It felt as if I had run a race, as I was panting heavily even though I was only lying on the bed.

I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but sleep eluded me. I was restless.

My body was covered in sweat.

What is going on?

I couldn't understand what was happening in my body or why I was perspiring, but I knew that it was all because of that girl.

So, without delay, I picked up a shirt and decided to go back to the Graysons' manor. I need to put an end to this.

Taking my car keys, I hurried out of the room and went straight to the car.

"Jayden!"

I heard Lewis call out for me but I ignored his call and zoomed off, splattering smoke in the air.

I arrived at the Graysons' manor faster than expected. The party was over and the guests were leaving, but I had no business at the party, rather my unfinished business was with the f*cking Pen.

My heart thumped heavily as I approached the Pen. However, I found it locked. I took a peek into it and I found her.

My supposed mate.

She was crouched down on her butt. Her tongue was all out.

My heart calmed at the sight of her and my wolf cooed.

I leaned closer to take a good look at her as I wondered how she ended up like that.

"Who are you?" I foolishly asked, as if she could answer.

Undoubtedly, her response was a bark. I shook my head in denial.

I can't have this as my mate.

Even though my wolf and heart both screamed for me not to say the words, I couldn't stop myself.

All this while, I always thought that I might be wrong. Maybe the goddess knows what she's doing after all. Maybe she knows what's best and will get a better life partner for me as my mate.

I was right all along, the goddess is nothing but a joker.

"What are you?" I rephrased as I studied her.

She opened her mouth to speak and I leaned closer, hoping to hear her speak.

Suddenly, I heard loud noises from inside the manor as the crowd screamed, "Fire!"
