Chapter 1 Three Painful Years

Most people thought back to their high school days with happiness, but that wasn't the case with Vicky Chu.

She had experienced such horrors that would leave anyone paralyzed. In the blink of an eye, she turned from a princess that everyone admired to a trash that people walked all over. At the age of nineteen, she graduated from high school. Everything was going fine. But soon, it took a dark turn.

"Vicky, do you think people respect you anymore? If yes, then you are deluded. Let me make it clear. You are nothing but my slave. You are bound to do what I ask you to! Stray dogs have better lives than you do!"

Saying this, the man tore her clothes and began to kiss every inch of her body. Ever since that day, he had abused her wantonly. He had tortured her both physically and mentally.

"Ah!" Vicky Chu was awakened by the same nightmare.

Running into the washroom, she turned the shower, squatted down in the bathtub and hugged herself. As the cold water dampened her clothes, she cried aloud. Nobody could hear her now.

"Vicky! Vicky! Are you okay? Did you have that nightmare again?" her brother asked, concern etched in his voice.

The nightmare was quite frequent and her brother knew how it disturbed her. Not wanting to worry him, Vicky Chu suppressed her trembling voice. "I'm fine. I just fell off the bed. Go back and sleep. After all, you have an exam to prepare for!"

After a while, he finally left. Hearing his footsteps, she breathed a sigh of relief.

This nightmare wouldn't leave her. It had followed her for three years. And in these three years, she had never felt safe. Every time she looked at herself in the mirror, disgust oozed through her. "I am dirty!" she would say to her reflection.

The morning was no different. Gloom followed her wherever she went. It was a sunny day and Vicky Chu was out with her brother, Randy Chu.

"Vicky, soon, it will be time for our summer vacation. I was thinking if I could give you a hand and try finding a job. I hate to see your struggle!"

Randy Chu was more thoughtful than other boys of his age. He sincerely wished to help his sister. But Vicky Chu couldn't let him work because of his poor health.

"You silly boy, why do you want to work? I am looking for a job. Your priority should be to study hard. Then I will put you into a reputable college. After you graduate from college, you are free to help me!" she replied, putting a full stop to his protests.

He insisted, "But Vicky, if I join college, you will have to pay a huge amount for it. I don't want you tire yourself for my sake. This is hard to watch."

Vicky came to a halt and stared at him straight in the eyes. "Everything I do is for your sake. That's the only pleasure I have in this life. If you truly care for me, do me a favor and study hard. Leave everything else to me, okay?"

Listening to this, he had no choice but to nod his head.

Vicky arrived at the InHo group. It was a tall and exquisite building. Even from outside, one could tell it was a magnificent place! The decoration itself had a domineering effect. It was one of the biggest financial group in the country and had countless branches.

Vicky Chu felt intimated being here. But composing herself, she walked in. After all, such opportunities wouldn't come every day. She felt fortunate to be called here for an interview.

"Number 57, Number 58, Number 59, get ready!" the receptionist called out. Looking at her own token, she realized she might have to sit here for hours before her turn would come. Her number was 388.

Being someone who liked to observe, she looked around at the interviewees. Most of them were girls. They were well dressed and seemed to have come from a good family. In an instant, she felt insecure about herself but she did her best to hide her emotions. As the ladies passed her, smell of amazing perfume wafted through the air. This room smell of a flower shop. Perfume was the last thing Vicky Chu could spend her limited money on.

The girl sitting opposite to her whispered to her friend, "Look at that girl! How can anyone come to an interview dressing up like this? Ridiculous! She is not bad looking, but she has no sense of dressing."

That lady's friend gazed at Vicky Chu. Feeling awkward, Vicky Chu looked down at her tattered shoes. "Well, I agree. She looks like quite an inexperienced girl. Perhaps she doesn't have any knowledge about how one dresses for an interview! Mark my words, she won't even pass the first round!" she said and both the girls burst out laughing.

Clenching her fists, Vicky Chu remained silent. The girls who had ruthlessly criticized her wore beautiful suits. She deeply felt the contrast between their classes. Her face flushed with shame. They noticed the sudden shift in Vicky's expression.

With an intention to taunt her further, one of them said, "Don't bother sitting near us. The interviewer might misunderstand and think we came here together! If that happens, I am pretty sure we will be eliminated as well!"

Their sarcastic tone and relentless ridicule pierced her heart. But she held her tongue, not wanting to argue. Taking her resume, she walked to a corner where it was quiet and peaceful.

After what felt like hours, her number was finally called.

Three interviewees were called in together. However, the interviewer's gaze was on Vicky Chu most of the time.

"Well, let's begin. Here is a test for you. I want to know about your theory.

We are competing with another venture investment company and we turn out to be well-matched. Our target is to get a client. How do we do it?"

While this interview took place, someone went to the president. "Sir, the person you mentioned last time has arrived and is giving the interview at this moment!"

The president had a large, well-furnished office. It had an ominous look, a bit like the man it served. Every furniture was painted black. Apart from the cactus on the table, everything here seemed dead and gloomy, including the president.

"That's good. Tell the interviewer to hire her instantly. But make sure she gets a job of lowest rank!"

"A job of lowest rank? Sir, I have checked her resume. She is quite a capable girl. Isn't it wrong to give her a job at this rank when she is capable of handling a more competitive position?"

He stopped speaking as he noticed his boss's eyes. It had turn red with fury. Knowing his life and job would be at stake if he protested further, the man agreed to follow his order.

Chapter 2 A New Life

"Do as I say! Don't you dare question my decisions! Ask Vicky Chu to come to work tomorrow. Ask the interviewer to inform her to be prepared. Working in InHo Group is not as simple as she thought."

"Yes! I'll do it right now,"

the man said and sprinted out of the office.

"Vicky Chu, you have put your hand in the lion's mouth. Brace yourself for a torturous life!" he muttered under his breath.

This man was none other than Steve Gong, the person who held the highest position in InHo Group. He was the youngest heir of the Gong family, and also the man who had made Vicky's life a living hell.

While Vicky was going back home, her phone rang. "Congratulations, Miss Vicky Chu. You have been hired by our company! Other details will be given when you come to the company tomorrow," the caller said.

Vicky, who had been almost certain she wouldn't get this job, was taken off-guard.

Thanking him profusely, she kept the phone. 'That's great! With this job, I can help Randy have a better life!' she thought with a new-found hope. Vicky held her phone tightly as if was her last ray of hope. She believed this job would change her and Randy's lives.

Steve Gong sat in his luxury car, and noticed the elated look on Vicky's face.

'Humph, after everything that happened, I thought you would never smile. Your happiness is short-lived. I will make sure you pay for what your parents had done!' he thought as his face contorted with an evil smile.

Nothing could bring Vicky down today. Before going home, she stopped by a supermarket and brought some grocery items. Once she was back home, she busied herself in the act of cooking. It had been a while since they ate something delicious.

"Vicky, I'm back!" Randy announced. Vicky was in the kitchen. When she heard his voice, she came out of the kitchen carrying two bowls of rice in her hands.

"We will be having dinner now. Go wash your hands."

"Okay!" After Randy washed his hands, he sat on a small chair.

Looking at the dishes on the table, he started to drool.

"Vicky, did something good happen today? Have you passed the interview?" Randy couldn't think of anything else that would make his sister so happy.

Putting the bowl on the table, Vicky nodded her head happily. "Yes, from now on, I will have a salary. Once the summer vacation begins, you can stay home and study. I will be out, making money. By the way, your head teacher told me that you are so smart that you can directly the university entrance examination. Why didn't you cooperate with the teacher and fill the application form? Why don't you want to skip a grade?"

"Vicky..." Randy put down his chopsticks and looked straight into her eyes. "Vicky, I know it isn't easy for you to support us. It has been three years since you haven't gone shopping. It is time you brought yourself some new clothes. To skip a grade, I will need to take an examination. And I have heard it is very costly. If I fail, your money will be wasted. And if I pass, you will have to spend more money on my college." He had thought this through and knew what he was doing.

"Randy, how many times should I tell you this is none of your business? Your concern should be your education. Don't fret over money. I can handle that." After everything that had happened, Vicky knew it was impossible for her to lead a good life. But she didn't want her brother to suffer because of her. He deserved to be happy.

"No. I don't want to go to college anymore. I want to lend you a helping hand. I could perhaps work as a tutor and bring in some money."

Vicky fell into silence. It was her incompetence that made Randy so desperate.

"Randy, listen to me, I've found a job. You go back to school and fill that form, okay? I will be making lots of money from this new job. You must listen to me. I want you to have a secure future and for that you need education!"

Vicky had persuaded Randy into saying yes.

The next day, Vicky reached the office early in the morning. "Today, new colleagues will be joining our office. Please do as I say. And Vicky, you..." The man looked through his notebook and reread the words written.

Once he was certain he had read it right, he said, "From now on, Vicky will work in the logistics department. Follow me to your department!"

'Logistics department?'

Vicky stood stunned for a few seconds. She had a finance degree and was an outstanding student. Her resume had given full information about her capabilities. It was beyond her why she was being sent to the logistics department.

"Just give your best. Also, since it's your first day, don't worry too much. There is always room for improvement!" he added, seeing the shocked look on Vicky's face. He thought she was nervous.

'Room for improvement?' Vicky thought and wanted to laugh. This job was a piece of cake. However, beggars can't be choosers. She had to make do with the position she was given.

"Well, that's it for today. I don't know why the leaders gave you this position. Perhaps the other positions were full. Just work hard. If you give your best, you could be promoted in the future."

Vicky smiled. But her excitement was gone now.

Once she entered the logistics department, a lady asked, "Are you the new colleague they were talking about? It can't be! There must be a mistake. How could they let a pretty girl like you work here?

You are in the wrong department, aren't you?"

Vicky shook her head. With confidence, she announced, "I'm not in the wrong department. I'm here to work. Are you Ruby?" Gracefully, she walked towards that woman.

Ruby analyzed Vicky from head to toe. Disbelief was etched on her face. "You are really here to work? Vicky Chu?"

"Yes, I am Vicky Chu. Can I start working now?" Vicky said, cutting to the chase.

"Yes, of course you can! Tina, take her to get changed."

Chapter 3 Meet Again

Vicky tied up her hair with a rubber band. A trace of stubbornness swept through her eyes. 'I will do my best, ' she thought to herself. Without wasting a second, she began the work. Cleaning was one of her specialties and she could do it without any trouble.

"Mr. Gong, Vicky has started working," someone informed Steve.

His face twisted with a smile. He couldn't wait to see how downcast Vicky looked. "I can't believe she agreed to do it. Anyway, I'd like to see it with my own eyes,"

he announced as he spilled his coffee on the floor. "Now look what happened! Go and ask Vicky to come here. She has some serious cleaning to do," he said and burst out laughing.

"Yes, sir!" the man said and hurried out of the office.

Vicky was occupied with the task of cleaning the meeting room. According to her rank, she was only allowed to clean the meeting room.

"Vicky, Mr. Gong has accidentally spilled his coffee. He wouldn't want the stain to be permanent so hurry and go to his office," the man declared.

"Okay, I'll be right there," said Vicky politely and left when she was done with the meeting room.

After putting away her belongings, Vicky was about to go to the general manager's office. When she passed by, her colleagues began to whisper among themselves.

"Look! She is going to the general manager's office. Turns out he has specifically asked for her. Do they know each other? Not everyone has the access to general manager's office! Even people from other departments aren't allowed to enter it without a solid reason. If he has asked for her, there must be some connection!"

"Oh, come on! You should be ashamed of yourself. Don't talk rubbish about the general manager! If you are found out, you will be doomed!"

The women looked around. They knew he couldn't stand gossip. "Shh, keep your voice down and no one will know! Now that she got an access to go inside, she is bound to make use of this opportunity. What if she fights for a better position using her beauty? Perhaps we will have to lower ourselves when we see her in the future!"

"Are you crazy? No way! He isn't dumb to fall for it. Beauty won't bring fortune. Forget it! Her turn will only come in the next life!"

Enduring their taunt-filled words, Vicky walked over calmly.

She knocked on the door but found out it was already open. Her gaze instantly fell on the area where coffee was spilled. "I'm here to clean the office," she announced. Vicky put down the plastic barrel in her hand.

"Go ahead!" The man's voice sent shivers down her spine.

She could forget her own voice but not his. It was the voice of the man who had tortured her day in, day out.

Vicky stopped what she was doing and kept her head down, not daring to look up at the person in front of her.

"What's wrong? Won't you look at me? After all, we are meeting after such a long time."

Steve stood up and walked towards her. With his cold hand, he touched her shoulder. But she didn't budge.

"Well, is that how you respond to your boss's call?"

Steve asked, feeling a bit annoyed as she wasn't acknowledging his presence.

Vicky continued to do her job. Watching her pay him no heed curdled his blood. Brimming with rage, Steve grabbed Vicky's wrist and threw her to the floor.

When he touched her, he noticed calluses on Vicky's hands. From what he remembered, they had been soft and smooth. Steve was taken off-guard. 'Hadn't she had a good life these years?' he wondered.

Vicky raised her head indifferently and looked at the man in front of her like she wasn't afraid of him. He hadn't changed a bit.

"What do you want?"

she asked confidently.

This was the most interesting sentence that Steve had heard.

He mulled over it and said, "Three years ago, I told you not to appear in front of me again. But now you came to my office, all by yourself. What do you think I want?"

In the past three years, Vicky had lived the worst life. If she let go of this job out of fear, then she and her brother would soon starve to death. She had to become strong. Hiding the softness in her heart, she decided to show the world her tough side.

"Let the bygones be bygones. Now, I work here as an employee." After tidying up the debris and water stains on the floor, Vicky turned around and left.

"Stop!"

Although it was the voice that shook her to the core, she maintained her composure. 'He can't get to me. I will take no one but my brother seriously, ' she chanted in her mind.

Vicky stopped for a second and said politely, "Mr. Gong, I've finished my work. I should be leaving now!" Without waiting for his response, she dashed out.

"Where do you think you are going? As long as you work for me, your life is at stake. Vicky, you rekindled my hatred for you!" he said and his voice echoed in his office.

Taking his landline, he called Jason. "Jason, go ahead and run a check on Vicky's background. Bring me the details as soon as possible!"

"Yes, sir!"

After hanging up the phone, Steve relaxed in his chair. The moment he looked into her eyes, his desire for revenge reawakened.

On the other hand, after leaving Steve's office, Vicky found respite in an empty corner. She couldn't believe what had just happened. Three years later, her nightmare was once again turning into reality.
