"You're just a lowly omega. How shameless of you to show up at a party like this! This party is for Jerold's invited guests only. What makes you think you belong here?"
"Jerold invited me..." I defended myself.
"Liar! There's no way Jerold invited you. Why would he? You'll only ruin the whole party!"
"Even your own father doesn't acknowledge you, Celine. You should know your place."
"This is a party for people who actually matter. You clearly don't belong here, fat pig!"
"Oh, pathetic Celine. You're such a useless, obese omega!"
Cruel laughter erupted around me.
I clutched my dress, fighting back tears as the pack members surrounded me. I had endured their insults countless times, but tonight, they hurt more than usual.
Because I had come here with hope.
Tonight was Jerold's birthday, and he had personally invited me to his party. As the beta's son and my childhood best friend, he was the only one in the pack who treated me like I mattered despite being a weak omega.
He was also the man I loved.
I had spent hours choosing my dress and fixing my hair, wanting to look beautiful for him.
"I'm not lying... Jerold invited me," I insisted, though my voice grew weaker under their mocking stares.
"Then why isn't he here to welcome you?"
Before I could answer, the crowd parted.
Jerold stepped between me and the others, immediately silencing their laughter.
"Hey, that's enough."
His voice remained calm, but his presence was enough to make everyone listen.
"Celine is our Alpha's eldest daughter. You should show her some respect."
My heart warmed at his defense. That was what I loved about Jerold. He never needed to shout to command attention. And he had always been kind to me.
I hurried toward him, my embarrassment fading as I remembered the gift I had brought.
"I brought you something."
I held out a small wooden box decorated with delicate floral patterns. I had spent hours carving it, imagining his reaction when he opened it.
Jerold raised his eyebrows.
"This is a gift for me? Even the box is beautiful. I wonder what's inside."
A few people snickered.
"Probably something useless."
"Of course. What else would she give him?"
I forced a small pout, but Jerold ignored their remarks and reached for the box.
When our hands touched, a strange warmth surged through my fingertips, spreading up my arm and into my chest like electricity.
Jerold froze.
We stared at each other as an overwhelming sensation swept through me. It felt as though an invisible thread had connected our souls, drawing me toward him.
My heartbeat thundered in my ears. Deep inside, my wolf stirred with unmistakable recognition.
'Mate.'
Her voice rang through my mind.
'He's our mate.'
Jerold was my mate?!
A sudden breeze swept around us, lifting our clothes and loose strands of hair. Silver light spiraled around our bodies, shimmering like ribbons of moonlight before forming a luminous circle that seemed to bind us together.
Overwhelmed with joy, I could barely contain myself.
"You're my mate!" I exclaimed.
Gasps filled the room.
"Holy shit. Celine is Jerold's mate?! That fat-ass omega?!"
"No way!"
"But what about Cecilia? Aren't they dating?"
My smile faded at the mention of Cecilia, my stepsister.
What do they mean, Jerold and Cecilia are dating? Jerold had only ever shown affection toward me.
I turned to him, searching for the same happiness I felt.
Instead, his face twisted with discomfort.
He abruptly pulled his hand away. The wooden gift box slipped from my fingers and cracked against the floor.
"No." Jerold shook his head. "No, this isn't possible."
He glanced at the people watching us.
"This isn't what you think. It's not-"
"What do you mean, Jerold?" I asked, confused. "Aren't you supposed to be happy?"
He stared at me before frustration flashed across his face.
"You're my mate?!" he shouted. "What kind of cheap joke is this?!"
I flinched.
"This isn't the true will of the Moon Goddess. This has to be some kind of curse!"
"Why would you say that, Jerold?" My voice trembled. "We've always been close. You told me you liked me..."
"I like you as a friend, Celine! Not as a woman! I only stayed close to you because I felt sorry for you!" he continued angrily. "No one wants to be around you, so I thought you should at least have someone!"
His words cut deeper than any insult the pack members had ever thrown at me.
"You should be grateful for that much!"
I struggled to process what I was hearing. Had I misunderstood every moment we'd shared, every kind word he'd ever said to me, and every time he'd defended me?
"Besides, there is no way I could ever like you."
Jerold glared at me.
"I love Cecilia. I always have, and I always will."
"What...? I had no idea..." I whispered. "You never told me! You two never even seemed like you were together!"
Jerold rubbed his eyes.
"That's because we thought it wasn't the right time for anyone to know."
"So... you really are dating Cecilia?"
"Yes."
His answer came without hesitation, destroying the last of my hope.
I looked at the wooden box lying between us. The floral patterns I had carved seemed foolish now.
Jerold took a deep breath, then looked me straight in the eyes.
"I can't be with you, Celine. So listen carefully."
Tears blurred my vision.
"I, Jerold Brook, reject you as my mate and sever this unwanted bond between us!"
Pain tore through my chest instantly.
The bond that had only just formed tightened around my soul before snapping apart. I screamed as agony exploded through my body, as though a blade had pierced my heart.
The warmth that had filled me moments ago vanished, replaced by a freezing emptiness. My knees buckled, and I clutched my chest as tears streamed down my face.
My wolf howled in anguish.
I had just found my mate, only to be rejected the very next moment in front of everyone.
The laughter had stopped, but whispers continued around me. I could barely hear them through the pain or the agony came from the broken bond or the realization that everything I had believed about Jerold had been a lie.
The first man I had ever loved had become the one who hurt me most.
The next afternoon, an omega from the pack approached me with a message.
"Jerold asked me to tell you to meet him at the treehouse near the edge of our territory. He wants to apologize."
My heart skipped.
Jerold wanted to apologize to me!
Despite everything that had happened the night before, a small spark of hope returned. Maybe he regretted his cruel words and wanted to explain himself.
I hurried toward the treehouse, even though the sun was already sinking and darkness would soon cover the forest.
But when I arrived, Jerold was nowhere to be seen.
Instead, Cecilia stood waiting with several of her friends, a few male and female warriors from the pack. They looked disgusted the moment they saw me.
"Well, look who finally showed up."
"The pathetic fat-ass omega actually came."
"Did you really think Jerold wanted to see you, pig?"
Their laughter echoed through the trees.
Cecilia stepped forward, a mocking smile spreading across her face.
"I heard you formed a mate bond with Jerold, only for him to reject you in front of everyone," Cecilia sneered, circling me like a predator. "What a shame. I arrived too late last night. I would have loved to witness such a humiliating scene with my own eyes."
She laughed, and the girls behind her joined in.
"You really are shameless, Celine. Did you really think Jerold would ever choose someone like you?" Cecilia continued, looking me up and down with open disgust. "I suppose you mistook his pity for affection."
She grabbed a handful of my hair and yanked hard enough to make my scalp sting.
"You actually thought you were special?"
"Cecilia, please..."
She released my hair, then jabbed a finger against my forehead.
"You're nothing but a pathetic, worthless omega. Did you really believe a man like Jerold would choose someone like you? Have you ever looked in the mirror? Just look at that disgusting body of yours!"
My eyes burned with tears.
Cecilia leaned closer, her smile turning cruel.
"You need to be taught a lesson so you'll finally learn your place, my lovely stepsister."
The others began closing in around me.
Fear gripped my chest. Their expressions brought back memories of everything Cecilia and her friends had done to me over the years.
I remembered being locked inside a storage room for two days, shivering from the cold until someone accidentally found me. Or being tied by my ankles and hung upside down for an entire day. Also being abandoned outside our territory, where a group of rogues had nearly discovered me.
All the time, I had been rescued just by accident. No one had even noticed I was missing until they happened to stumble upon me.
And whenever Cecilia and her friends were questioned, they always gave the same excuse.
'It was just a joke.'
A joke. That was all my suffering ever meant to them.
My heart pounded as the warriors moved closer. I knew what would happen if they caught me.
I had to run.
"Get her!"
I spun around and fled.
Footsteps thundered behind me as I stumbled over roots and uneven ground. My lungs burned, and every breath came out in a harsh gasp.
They were warriors, while I was an overweight omega with no strength to match theirs. I couldn't outrun them.
But I couldn't let them catch me, either.
When I reached the boundary of our territory, I made a desperate choice.
I crossed it.
I had no idea what awaited me beyond the border, but anything was better than being captured by Cecilia and her friends.
I kept running into the darkness, pushing deeper between the trees. Branches scratched my skin, and roots threatened to send me sprawling with every step.
I didn't stop until my legs finally gave out.
My body crashed onto the cold ground. I clutched my chest, struggling to catch my breath as pain spread through my exhausted muscles.
Only then did I realize where I was.
Far outside my pack's territory. Alone in the dark, with no idea what might be lurking in the forest.
I lay there until my breathing gradually settled. My chest still rose and fell heavily, and every muscle ached from the desperate escape.
Then I heard something.
Heavy footsteps.
At first, the sound was faint, almost swallowed by the darkness of the forest, but it was unmistakably getting closer.
Along with it came the rough sound of someone breathing heavily, each breath uneven and strained, as though whoever was approaching had also been running or was struggling just to remain standing.
Panic immediately surged through me. I pushed myself upright and frantically looked around.
But I found nothing.
Only towering trees surrounded me. Their enormous trunks disappeared into the darkness while their branches tangled high above my head.
Moonlight barely managed to pass through the overgrown canopy, leaving most of the forest buried in shadows. Every direction looked the same, and suddenly the darkness felt much more threatening than it had moments ago.
The footsteps grew louder.
I can feel my heart hammered against my ribs.
Someone is coming, and my first thought it perhaps was a rogue.
After what had happened earlier, the possibility immediately terrified me. I struggled to get back on my feet, my exhausted legs trembling beneath me as I pushed myself away from the ground.
I barely managed to stand before a figure emerged from between the trees.
I flinched so hard that I nearly fell again.
Without giving it any thought, I instinctively stumbled backward, putting as much distance between us as my weak legs allowed.
Then, I could only stare.
The figure was tall, broad-shouldered, and frighteningly imposing against the darkness.
My first instinct was still to assume he was a rogue, but as he stepped closer and the pale moonlight finally touched his face, I realized something was wrong with that assumption.
He didn't look like a rogue at all.
His clothes were disheveled, and his entire body seemed to be trembling with exhaustion. One hand was pressed against his side while the other reached toward me as though he desperately needed something-or someone-to hold on to.
"Hhhelp..."
His voice was deep and hoarse, almost painfully rough.
There was something strange about him.
His face was flushed, his breathing uneven, and his eyes looked unfocused beneath well-defined eyebrows. He fixed me with a dark, piercing gaze that sent a shiver through me, and made me instinctively take another step back.
"You're not a rogue, are you?"
He shook his head weakly.
"Help... please..."
He took another unsteady step toward me, and I retreated again.
My heart is pounding harder now.
There was something about his condition that I couldn't understand.
His cheeks and the tips of his ears were deeply flushed, while a faint sheen of sweat covered his forehead and neck. His breathing came in slow, heavy breaths, as though every inhale was difficult to control.
Even from a short distance away, I could sense the unnatural heat radiating from his body. And there was a sharp, unfamiliar scent lingering in the air around him.
It was sweet, warm, and overwhelming.
My eyes widened.
The way he was trembling, the feverish flush covering his face, the strained expression in his eyes, and that unmistakable scent suddenly made everything click.
"Oh my God..." I stared at him in disbelief. "You're in heat!"
His expression twisted with pain, as though even hearing the words had reminded him of how badly he was struggling to control himself.
He stepped toward me again. And I kept backing away, taking one step after another.
I was so focused on the man in front of me that I didn't notice what was behind me. Until my back suddenly collided with something solid.
I gasped.
My entire body jolted, and I spun around in terror, expecting to find a tree, a wild animal, or perhaps another rogue waiting to attack me.
Instead, I found another man standing directly behind me.
My breath caught. He looked almost exactly like the first man.
For a moment, my bewildered mind couldn't process what I was seeing.
I looked at the man in front of me. Then at the man behind me. Then back again.
What the hell...?
They had almost identical faces. The same sharp features, the same eyes, the same strong jaw, even the same intimidating build. If it weren't for their hair, I might have genuinely believed I was looking at the same person.
The man in front of me had dark hair, while the one behind me had blond hair. That was almost the only thing that set them apart.
"Ffhoundh yyouh..."
The blond-haired man spoke. His voice was even hoarse and rougher than the first man's. Also more painful and agonizing.
His face was flushed even deeper. And his breathing heavier as though he had been enduring the same unbearable condition.
Before I could even react, he reached for both of my hands and held them tightly.
The instant his skin touched mine, something exploded inside me.
I froze as a strange sensation surged through my entire body. Starting from my hands and spreading rapidly through my chest, down my spine, and into every nerve beneath my skin.
It was warm, powerful, and strangely familiar, yet completely impossible for me to understand.
My heart slammed against my ribs once, then again, each beat growing harder as an overwhelming pull seemed to take hold of me from somewhere deep inside.
It wasn't just a sensation. It felt as though something inside me had suddenly awakened, something ancient and instinctive that recognized him before my mind even had the chance to catch up. A powerful warmth spread through my body, followed by a tingling rush that left my fingers trembling in his grasp.
And then my wolf stirred.
'Mate.'
The single word echoed through my mind.
'Mate!'
No.
That couldn't be right.
I had already lost my mate bond just yesterday.
But now-
'SECOND CHANCE MATE!'
My wolf practically screamed inside my head, overwhelmed with excitement, and the sheer force of her joy almost made me dizzy.
The sensation became stronger when I looked into the blond-haired man's eyes. Something invisible seemed to pull at the center of my chest, connecting us with a force I couldn't explain.
My hands trembled in his.
And then the first man, the dark-haired one, reached me from behind. He wrapped an arm around my waist and leaned in, inhaling my scent.
"So it's you."
The moment his skin touched mine, the sensation expanded and grew stronger.
The strange warmth that had connected me to the blond-haired man suddenly surged through all three of us. As though an invisible thread had snapped into place between our bodies, binding us together, and growing tighter with every heartbeat.
I stared at them in horror.
I really couldn't seem to understand what was happening. Everything felt too overwhelming for my mind to process, but my wolf understood it immediately.
She was trying to tell me that she was not screaming about one mate.
She was screaming about both of them!
'Mate.'
'Mate!'
My heart raced faster as the invisible bond tightened around us, linking the three of us together in a way that should have been impossible.
Two men.
One bond.
My wolf hadn't stopped screaming inside my head, insisting that these men were my mates.
But I still couldn't accept it. I didn't even know how something like this was possible.
The first man, the one holding me from behind, suddenly lowered his head and buried his face against the side of my neck, inhaling deeply as though my scent was the only thing keeping him grounded.
I jolted in surprise.
"What are you doing?!"
I tried to twist my body and pull myself away, desperate to break free from the two men surrounding me. But the arm locked around my waist tightened, holding me firmly in place.
What frightened me most was how easily he held me in place.
My body was nearly twice his size, yet I couldn't break free from his hold. I pushed against his arm with everything I had left, but it barely moved.
Perhaps it was because I had just run until my legs gave out, so exhaustion had drained whatever strength I normally had.
Whatever the reason, I couldn't afford to stay trapped between them.
I had to get away.
And I had to do it now.
"Please... don't go."
The man behind me murmured the words against my neck. His voice low and breathless, almost as though he was barely holding himself together. I felt a ticklish sensation spreading across my neck when his breath brushed against my skin with every word he spoke, sending a strange feeling through me that made my shoulders tense instinctively.
But it didn't stop there.
That sensation seemed to travel beneath my skin like a tingling electric pulse. Down through my shoulders, along my spine, and into the rest of my body. My breath caught as another strange shiver followed, leaving me even more confused than before.
"H-help us..."
His voice trembled behind me.
I instinctively raised my shoulders, unable to stop myself from reacting to the ticklish sensation against my neck.
I wanted to get away from these two strangers who were clearly being affected by their heat, especially when I had no idea what they might do next.
But at the same time, a strange warmth spread through my body, bringing a sense of comfort and safety that made no sense at all.
I should have been desperate to escape.
But another part of me wanted to stay, to remain between them. It was like my body had already decided that I belonged here, even while my rational thought was screaming that I needed to get away before the situation became more dangerous.
