Tonight, the splendid villa was adorned by colorful lights that made it look more extravagant.
With a goblet in her hand, Perrin Xia walked gracefully into the hall.
She was wearing a red dress that outlined her perfect figure. There was a faint smile on her thin lips.
But as she walked, her slender fingers secretly clenched into tightly squeezed fists. She felt like a wave was rolling in her stomach.
No matter how gorgeous this party was, for her, she had nothing to do with it.
This party was organized by Lucas Gu, her nominal fiance, who had always been cold to her. The man loved humiliating her all the time.
She even had a hunch that Lucas Gu would humiliate her again in this banquet, just like the way he had done so many times.
She really wanted to get away from here as soon as possible. However, there was a reason why she had to stay for the time being.
Perrin Xia was on her way to the bathroom when she accidentally bumped into a man. The red wine in her glass immediately splashed into his white shirt. "I'm so sorry," she apologized immediately.
But she was stunned when the man said, "If this is your way of attracting my attention, I'm afraid you've used the wrong method." The man's voice was unusually cold and full of mockery.
Perrin Xia raised her head and met the man's playful eyes. And her jaw dropped upon recognizing who the man in front of her was. He was no other than Rory An, one of the most prominent personalities in B City.
Perrin Xia slightly frowned when she felt her stomach churned. Her face turned white as a sheet, but she still tried her best to explain, "I'm sorry, but I think you misunderstand. Don't worry. I am willing to pay for your stained shirt."
Rory An stared at her pale face. Most women played hundreds of tricks just to win his favor, and in his eyes, she was no different from them. "You don't have to pretend that you are sick. After all, I am not interested in a woman like you."
Perrin Xia had no strength to explain anymore. Moreover, she was afraid that if she opened her mouth, she would only throw up in front of him.
To avoid another embarrassing situation, she decided to turn around and leave. But when she was about to walk forward, someone grabbed her arm all of a sudden. When she turned back, she saw a woman wearing a yellow gown.
"I've already seen a lot of women like you. How dare you bother Rory in this banquet!" the woman sneered. She looked so domineering.
Rory An raised his eyebrows upon seeing the intrusion of another woman. But his eyes were fixed on Perrin Xia's face that had become paler. He wanted to see how she would deal with this mess.
Although he didn't show it, he was obviously interested in Perrin Xia.
Perrin Xia didn't say anything. Instead, she just shook the woman's hand off with a frown. Her eyes emitted a very cold aura.
The woman in a yellow gown saw the interest in Rory's eyes towards Perrin, so she flared up with rage. She grabbed Perrin's arm again and asked, "What? Do you feel guilty now?"
"I..." Perrin stammered. Although her face was now as white as a sheet, her lips were still as enchanting as red roses when they moved slightly. She was about to open her mouth when a thin layer of mist surfaced in her eyes.
The woman squinted and added in a cruel voice, "What are you doing? Do you think Rory will fall for you if you pretend to look pitiful?"
Perrin felt that the woman had gone overboard. She had nothing to do with Rory, but the woman kept on insisting.
She really wanted to explain, but her stomach felt more and more uncomfortable. It was as if she couldn't restrain herself from vomiting anymore. "Ump!"
Before the woman could react, Perrin had already thrown up at her.
She took this opportunity to give the woman a blow. With tears falling down her slightly flushed cheeks, she looked up at the half-smiling Rory and said in a soft voice, "I'm sorry. Although I am pregnant, I am willing to give him up if he really wants to be with you."
Rory frowned slightly upon hearing Perrin's words. But of course, he didn't butt in. In fact, the interest in his eyes grew more intense. He had a feeling that Perrin was not a simple woman.
The woman in a yellow gown, who was dirtied all over, glared at Perrin. With malicious eyes, the expression on her face became furious. "You're talking nonsense!"
Rory suddenly wrapped his arm around Perrin's waist to support her. He then turned to the woman and said coldly, "Sasha, are you done?"
Perrin's heart skipped a beat. She immediately understood that Rory was trying to play a trick. He wanted to use her to annoy the woman in a yellow gown.
But she didn't want to get involved with them, so she excused herself, "I'm sorry, I need to go to the bathroom."
As soon as she moved away from Rory, Sasha Luo was like an octopus who suddenly clung to Rory. A hint of coldness flashed across his eyes.
When Perrin came out of the bathroom, she saw Lucas Gu climbed up the stage and picked up a microphone. He said, "Next, let's all welcome Miss Perrin to the stage."
Before she could fully understand what was going on, the bright spotlight was already aimed at her. She didn't have any choice but to climb up the stage under everyone's complicated gaze.
A question played in her mind, 'What a new trick is Lucas going to play this time?' Her heart sank a little.
Perrin was already on the stage when she noticed a big cake in the middle. The candles on it were lit, and their little flames swayed with the wind. She got more confused, clueless of what Lucas Gu was doing.
"Come here." Lucas Gu beckoned to her to come near him while he took out a long knife with a ribbon tied at the handle. He then motioned her to cut the cake with him.
Since there were so many eyes looking at them, she was too embarrassed to refuse. She held his hands and cut the cake from the top.
They were too close that she couldn't help feeling nervous. She felt like she was trembling all over.
With a crisp sound, something bright slid down from the highest part of the cake, rolled over the red carpet, and stopped at Perrin's feet.
Without thinking too much, she bent down and picked it up. The spotlight was once again focused on her, which gave her a feeling of suffocation.
The shining diamond ring got even more dazzling under the spotlight. Everyone in the banquet quieted down as their eyes were glued at the stage.
Mixed emotions surged up in Perrin's heart as she didn't know whether to take the ring or put it back down. She couldn't even dare to look up at Lucas.
Just when the audience couldn't restrain themselves, Lucas picked up the microphone again and looked at Perrin sarcastically. He then asked in a deliberately raised voice, "Perrin, are you planning to force me to marry you with that ring? I suggest you don't use this trick on me again. Because no matter how many times you use this method, I'll still never marry you."
His words were like a bomb that exploded in the banquet hall.
Everyone looked at Perrin in disbelief. They all thought that she organized this party for this play. It was said that a woman's heart was like a needle at the bottom of the ocean. Perhaps, she badly wanted to be the daughter-in-law of the Gu family that she was willing to use any kind of tricks.
Perrin thought through clenched teeth, 'Lucas, you did it again!'
Lucas had humiliated her so many times, but he didn't seem to have any satisfaction.
This time, he even wanted to embarrass her in front of so many people.
She couldn't tolerate this anymore.
Perrin looked around the crowd coldly. Finally, her eyes were fixed on a specific person. With a smile, she walked down the stage without looking at Lucas. Under everyone's watchful eyes, she walked towards the cold man.
A sweet smile appeared on her beautiful face as she held Rory's arm and said, "Honey, I think they all misunderstand me just now. What do you think we should do?"
She looked so calm, but deep inside her, she was scared to death. If Rory didn't cooperate, she would humiliate herself more than Lucas did.
Before Rory could react, Lucas, who was still on the stage, shouted angrily, "Perrin, what is the meaning of this?"
Never did he thought that Perrin was capable of embarrassing him.
"I'm pregnant, and he is the father." This time, she was ready to risk everything just to stop Lucas from humiliating her, especially that she was facing so many people.
"Let's go." Finally, Rory opened his mouth. His voice was so pleasing to the ear, but with a trace of coldness. The rumors about him were true. He always looked indifferent.
A man like him would not waste his time explaining to others.
So without further ado, he took Perrin's hand and walked out of the banquet hall.
Perrin, who had been nervous all the time, finally heaved a sigh of relief. She held his arm more tightly as they walked out of the hall sweetly.
Everyone's surprised gaze followed them. But Lucas couldn't just look at them walking away. He jumped off the stage and chased them to the lobby of the hotel.
"Perrin Xia, stop!" he growled angrily.
All the while, he thought that his plan to embarrass her in front of the crowd would be successful. But he was mistaken. He didn't expect that she could do something to counter him. He indeed underestimated her ability.
Perrin turned a deaf ear to him and continued to walk towards the car with Rory. Actually, she planned to explain everything to Rory as soon as they came out, and she would just take a taxi home. However, she didn't expect that Lucas would chase after her. Now, she had no choice but to go with Rory to his car.
"Perrin, you are such a bitch! How dare you seduce another man while you are engaged to me! You don't deserve to be the daughter-in-law of the Gu family." Lucas rushed over and grabbed her arm.
"Let go of me." Perrin struggled, but her efforts were in vain.
Her inflamed eyes glared at Lucas. The calmness on her delicate face had already vanished. She said furiously, "Don't you still realize what you've done? Lucas, you don't care about this engagement at all. I am your fiancee, but you keep on humiliating me in public."
This time, her heart had become completely cold. She hated Lucas for treating her unjustly all the while.
"I don't care whatever you say. You have to go with me now," Lucas said firmly.
"No way," Perrin refused unhesitatingly.
"Perrin, I didn't expect you to be so cunning. You are leaving me now because you've hooked up with a powerful man, right?" The truth was, Lucas liked Perrin. But he was dissatisfied with the marriage arranged by their families. So, he tried to resist by humiliating her in public all the time.
But the humiliations that Perrin suffered from him had broken her heart countless times already. It was difficult for her to forgive him anymore. "Lucas, I know that you hate this engagement from the very start. So, let's just cancel it. You don't have to humiliate me again and again. From now on, you don't have to see me. We don't need to embarrass ourselves in public like this again in the future."
Lucas was surprised to hear her words.
He admitted that he disliked their arranged marriage. But since he really liked her, he had never thought of canceling their engagement.
"Perrin, how dare you! You did not only cheat on me openly. Now, you even want to abandon our engagement?" he said annoyingly.
"This is what you have always wanted to happen, right?" Perrin asked, trying to hold back her tears.
"And now you're saying that I forced you to have an affair with another man? You bitch!" Lucas yelled angrily.
Perrin couldn't take it anymore, so her palm landed on Lucas' face all of a sudden. Lucas couldn't believe that she had slapped him just now.
"You hit me?" He got more enraged. Perrin didn't only embarrass him, she even hit him.
He stepped forward, grabbed her shoulders, and was about to kiss her forcefully.
"Help!" Perrin screamed.
"Let her go!" Rory, who had been standing aside and watching them, said coldly.
It was only then that Lucas spared him a glance.
Thinking that he was the reason why Perrin became valiant all of a sudden, Lucas let go of her and walked towards Rory. He then threw a punch at him without any words.
But Rory didn't waver at all. In the end, it was Lucas who got beaten and fell to the ground.
Rory squatted down and said coldly, "Bullying a woman? What kind of man do you think you are?"
He then stood up and stretched out his hand to Perrin.
She took his hand. Sadness flashed across her eyes upon thinking of all that Lucas did to her, but it quickly dissipated.
She didn't expect that letting go of a relationship was this easy.
With a faint smile on her face, she looked down at Lucas and said, "Rory drives a Rolls-Royce while you drive a BMW. He is the head of the four young masters in the capital. Who do you think you are compared to him?"
It was too embarrassing for a man to hear such words from a woman. Anyone who heard it would definitely pity Lucas.
After taking a last look at Lucas, Perrin quietly got in Rory's car.
Lucas was left alone, watching the car driving farther and farther away. If only he could smash that Rolls-Royce into pieces. He almost couldn't believe that Perrin would be lured by just a luxury car.
Inside the car, Perrin and Rory were quiet for a while. Perrin looked at the rearview mirror, but Lucas couldn't be seen anymore. She wanted to turn to her side, but she couldn't dare to look at the man next to her. After hesitating for a while, she finally managed to speak up, "Mr. Rory, thank you so much for helping me tonight. I know I have troubled you a lot. You can now drop me here."
"That's all?" Rory said and smiled coldly. Actually, he didn't intend to drop her off anywhere.
"I..." Perrin was at a loss for words. She didn't know what else to say, so she just uttered sincerely, "I'm really thankful for your help. And I hope I can repay you someday. Thank you once again."
She couldn't help stealing a glance at him. He was like a beautiful god in the night with an irresistible dignity all over his body.
"Then, how do you think you can repay me?" He was focused on driving, so he asked the question without looking at her. But his cold voice made Perrin shiver.
"How about dinner?" Perrin asked nervously. The truth was, she didn't have any idea how to thank Rory. After all, she wasn't as wealthy as him. She might not be able to give him what he wanted.
"No need. Just remember that you owe me one. I think you can get off of the car now." Rory's voice was cold as usual.
Perrin got out of the car and stared at the Rolls-Royce blankly as it drove away. It was only then that she realized what Rory had said. He said that she owed him a favor.
A trace of regret flashed through her eyes. What she hated the most was to owe anything from other people.
But when she thought that it seemed impossible for them to cross paths again, she eventually smiled.
Soon enough, Perrin forgot what happened between her, Lucas, and Rory. She cheered up and went on with her life.
But today, she felt so depressed.
Holding the script written by her mother when she was alive, Perrin sat beside the fountain frustratingly, quietly watching the passersby.
"What should I do?" she muttered. Lowering her head, she stared at the yellowing script again.
Her mother's only wish when she was alive was to turn the script into a movie. So to fulfill it, Perrin never stopped looking for an opportunity to have it shot.
Today, she met with a movie director and a scriptwriter who both refused her offer. Actually, this wasn't the first time. She had been turned down many times already.
She couldn't help asking herself if she could still make her mother's wish come true.
"Sitting on the edge of a fountain, lost in thought. People who were enjoying the scenery were looking at you through the window." This was the best description of Perrin's current situation.
In a cafe not far away from her, Rory was sitting by the window.
With him was Ray Cheng, a famous real estate merchant in the city. Obviously, he was busy with work today.
"Mr. Rory, since you've strolled around the mall just now, you must have noticed that there are only a few people inside. Well, aside from the fact that today is a working day, the items sold in the mall are all luxury goods. In short, only wealthy people can enter that place."
Ray Cheng was blabbering, but Rory was totally ignoring him.
His eyes were staring at the woman sitting by the fountain through the glass window.
She was wearing a long white lace dress, and her hair was rolled up into a beautiful bun. Several strands of hair fell from her temples, making her look more graceful and elegant.
It was such a beautiful sight to behold.
Remembering how bold she was that night, Rory almost couldn't believe that she looked so quiet today. She seemed to be lost in thought. Now, he couldn't help wondering what she could be thinking.
Perrin's busy thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a shrill voice. "Finally, I've found you."
"You?" She raised her head speechlessly. The woman in front of her blocked most of the sunlight and cast a shadow on her.
Squinting her eyes, she tried to recall who this woman was.
"Me what? Get up, you bitch! I am going to teach you a lesson for stealing my man." Sasha had been looking for Perrin since that night in the banquet. It wasn't easy for her to find Perrin. That was why when she finally saw her sitting here alone, she walked over angrily.
"Hey, crazy woman, let go of me. I don't even know you." With one hand protecting the script, Perrin pushed Sasha away with her other hand.
This time, she remembered who this woman was.
She was the woman in a yellow gown who was abandoned by Rory at the banquet.
Since she provoked Perrin first at that time, Perrin had to fight back.
However, Perrin had already forgotten about it. She didn't expect that the woman was really jealous of her and would look for her.
"No! I won't let you go, bitch! I can't forgive you for seducing my Rory!" Sasha raised her hand to slap Perrin.
Fortunately, Perrin reacted in time to dodge her.
"Crazy," Perrin murmured while staring at the exasperated woman in front of her.
Seeing the script in her hand, Sasha sneered, "I suppose you are looking for a director and a scriptwriter to shoot a movie for you. But you failed again, right?"
Perrin looked at her in disbelief and asked, "How did you know?"
"How did I know? Humph! Do you think I will let you go that easily after you have offended me?" Sasha suddenly looked vicious and complacent.
She then added fiercely, "Since you took Rory away from me, I asked the director to refuse shooting your script. How's that? Only fair, isn't it?"
"It was you?" Perrin asked angrily.
"Of course, it was me. Although the director has already read your script, I would never allow your wish to come true. So I told the director not to take your script and never shoot it," Sasha said complacently.
Perrin was utterly surprised. She didn't expect that her mother's script couldn't be shot because of this woman in front of her.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" she yelled.
"Well, you only deserve it. You take my Rory away, so I will also not let your wish come true." Sasha said savagely, "You are a bitch, so must be punished."
She raised her hand again to slap Perrin.
Inside the cafe, Rory was quietly watching the scene. Upon he saw Sasha raising her hand, his slender fingers suddenly trembled. He couldn't stand it anymore, so he rose from his seat and walked out with a frown.
"Oh... Mr. Rory, where are you going?" Ray Cheng stood up and followed him outside.
Rory made great strides to the fountain. He then said in a low yet powerful voice, "Sasha Luo, that's enough!"
"Rory?" Seeing that Rory was coming over, Sasha smiled brightly. She seemed to have forgotten Perrin's existence immediately.
However, she soon realized that his gaze was not on her.
She rushed to him and said weakly while pointing at Perrin, "Rory, that woman is bullying me."
Still holding the script in her hand carefully, Perrin couldn't help defending herself, "That's enough. I was not the one who started it. You approached me all of a sudden and told me that you deliberately asked the director to turn down my script. You even called me "bitch" many times. Are you really used to bad-mouth others?"
"Bitch!" Sasha flared up in rage again.
"No. You are the bitch!" Perrin couldn't bear Sasha's insults anymore, so she fought back.
