A City was as usual busy in the evening. The hustle and bustle was due to the people hurrying to reach their home after work.
Flora Ye was sitting by the window in the cafe nearby her company. She had been fond of seating by the window for so many years. Perhaps it was because she could see the world outside through the window. Seating here, she didn't feel living in the dark and could sense her actual existence in the world.
Ivan Li had called her and said that he had something to tell her. So, they had decided to meet at this cafe called "Off Shore".
Flora Ye looked at the two people sitting across her.
They were Ivan Li and a strange woman. Flora Ye wondered why her boyfriend was with this woman.
"Flora, let's break up and call off our engagement. She's Kelly Su. She's pregnant with my child and I'm going to marry her." Flora Ye's contemplation proved right. Ivan Li's words stabbed her heart like a sharp knife.
Flora Ye stared at him with confusion in her eyes. A moment later, when she realized he wasn't joking, the confusion dissipated from her eyes. She flashed an indifferent smile and said with no trace of emotion, "Okay. I wish you happiness."
After saying that, she took her bag and walked out the cafe. Even though she pretended she was okay, every step of her was difficult. Her heart seemed to be broken into several pieces, her lips trembling.
Although she was suffering a lot of pain, her self-esteem wasn't ready to let her show her weakness to others. At this moment, even with so many people in the street, she felt nothing but lonely.
The walk from the cafe to her home wasn't really a long one. Normally, it would only take half an hour to walk back. But today, she was feeling down, thus walking for more than an hour absentmindedly.
As the darkness fell, the city lights lit up. As the time was winter, she could perfectly feel the cold of the night. Sometime later, she got tired of walking for so long and found a roadside bench and took a seat. She pulled her knees closer to her chest and buried her head between them. Her shoulders trembled as she began to cry.
It was fortunate of her that not many people were around. She could take off her mask and stopped pretending to be strong in front of others, especially Ivan Li.
She felt heartbroken, as if a piece of her heart had been lost. Ivan Li was not only her fiance, but also her family. They had been together for the past fifteen years. He used to give her warmth and support her. She still remembered the first time she met Ivan Li. At that time, she was only ten years old and just lost her parents in a car accident. It was the biggest disaster of her life. Her parents had the tragic accident while returning from a business trip, and they died on spot. She used to be a happy child, but since the accident, she forgot how to laugh from then on. It was Ivan Li who kept her company at the time of need. He lived on the street opposite Flora's house. They used to be friends since their childhood. His family took care of her when they learned about her parent's death. They happily greeted her under their care.
Flora Ye was five years younger than Ivan Li. His parents treated her like their own daughter. Fifteen years had passed since then. When she graduated, he proposed to her making her extremely happy.
But now, it was all gone. The warmth of his love was gone now. She didn't know what to do now. She felt like the abandoned child who couldn't find her home. Moreover, she lived in the apartment Ivan Li bought her. How could she go back there after this?
Why did he become like this overnight? Flora Ye reminded herself how she had been deceiving herself in the last couple of months. Two months ago, she sensed Ivan Li wanted to say something to her. But every time, whenever he would try to talk, she would change the topic. She had been so afraid of the thought that he would say something that'd shatter her heart.
There were fewer people on the street. Only a few cars passed by occasionally. One of them was this classic black BMW. A man in casual clothes was driving the car. He had high cheekbones and a pair of black eyes with golden rimmed glasses. His phone buzzed as he received the call.
"Mr. Shen! Why did you leave so early today? You're such a killjoy!" A man's complaining voice came from the other end of the line.
Right then, the car took a turn and the man pushed on the brakes making the car come to a halt. He replied, "It's late. As for the beauty you mentioned, you enjoy her yourself. Bye." He hung up the phone, frowning.
Through the glass window, he saw a girl a few meters away, sitting on a bench all by herself burying her face between her knees. Somehow, he had a feeling the girl was in need of help. She looked like a pet that had been lost.
He was never a meddlesome person, but when he sensed her being in pain, he couldn't stop himself. He got out of the car and went to her.
Flora felt someone standing before her. It took her by surprise. She looked up and found a handsome stranger looking down at her. The first thought that crossed her mind was, 'How can a man be so handsome?'
The man held up a handkerchief to her and said, "Wipe off your tears." His voice was manly and attractive.
Flora took the handkerchief quietly and wiped her tears with it before looking up at the man again. "Thank you." Her voice sounded a little hoarse. Perhaps it was because she had cried for too long. She looked like a rabbit with her red nose that had been frozen now by the cold night wind.
As William Shen noticed that, he couldn't help but laugh. It was indeed astonishing that the cold and ruthless Mr. Shen was now showing compassion towards a girl he didn't even know. He just guessed what happened to her and said, "There are many things to do in life. Don't give up hope just because you've broken up with your boyfriend."
It only made sense that a girl of her age must have quarreled with her boyfriend and cried because of that. William Shen guessed right.
Flora Ye felt embarrassed. She had been pretending to be strong all the time, but she didn't expect that her frailty was seen by a man she didn't even know. She felt flustered. She stared at him with red puffy eyes.
He turned around and said, "Get in the car. I'll drive you home." He walked towards his car, leaving her behind.
She realized this man was powerful and she didn't have enough courage to refuse him. She silently stood up and followed him. Opening the door of the passenger seat, she climbed into the car and sat down quietly.
William Shen started the engine and the car came to life. He took a quick glance at her, who had been sitting with her head down, and asked, "Where do you live? You haven't told me your address yet."
Flora flinched at the sudden query of the stranger. She looked up at him and hesitated to tell him the address. After all, it wasn't her home. It was Ivan Li's house and now she had no place to go. "You can just drop me off at the supermarket ahead."
William didn't respond to that but kept driving. Looking out of the window, Flora said softly, "Thank you." Although she didn't know why he would console her and send her home, she was still grateful to him.
"Are you okay?" William Shen glanced at her. She was not a stunning beauty, but she was unique and elegant. Looking at her gave people a comfortable feeling. He sensed a familiarity between her eyebrows. For a moment, he thought to have an illusion, as if he had seen the same woman who used to smile elegantly.
Flora nodded as the car stopped. She unfastened the seat belt, opened the door and got out. "Thank you." She thanked him again and closed the door after. Then she turned around and walked straight forward, although she didn't know where to go.
His car disappeared in the dark. Flora Ye's phone suddenly rang. She took it out of her bag. It was from Anne Chen.
She and Anne Chen had been classmates and friends for four years in college. They had a good relationship. But after graduation, Anne Chen went abroad, and they hadn't seen each other for more than a year.
"Hello, Anne? Why are you calling me now? Have you finished your research study?" Flora Ye took a deep breath and asked softly. She wanted to sound normal and didn't want her friend to worry about her.
It suddenly occurred to her that Anne Chen used to tease her with a smile that she was jealous of her because she had Ivan Li as a boyfriend. Everyone knew the beginning of their relationship, but they could never guess the end. Even she herself couldn't.
On the other end of the line, Anne Chen replied cheerfully, "Flora, I have good news. I'm coming back tomorrow. We can meet soon."
It was really a piece of good news. Flora couldn't help but smile. "That's great. Call me once you arrive."
The winter was getting colder and colder each day. Flora had to wear a scarf to keep herself warm. But the scarf was a little big for her small face. It looked as if it covered her entire face except her eyes.
"Flora." As soon as she got off the bus, she heard someone calling out her name from behind. She turned back and found Selina Gu, her colleague. As they worked together, they had developed a good relationship each other.
Flora said nothing, but only stared at Selina Gu. She was feeling too cold to talk, and this was the reason she never liked winter. All she preferred in the winter was to curl up in a ball and sleep. It was the only thing that made her happy in winter.
"Flora, what's up with you? Why do you look like frozen?" Selina Gu asked with a grin. She was an optimistic girl and completely opposite to Flora. Today she was wearing a pink overcoat and carrying her bag in her hand.
Flora rubbed her hands together before answering her with a forced smile, "You know it very well that I'm afraid of cold. As long as it's winter, I want to wrap myself tightly in the quilt and stay at home."
Selina Gu couldn't help laughing. She thought for a quick second before saying, "Flora, you know what, I have heard the recent news of how all the major newspapers, magazines and TV stations are fighting over the opportunity to interview the general manager of Shen Group. But no one knows how he looks like. He must look handsome and cool. Sunshine will also trying to achieve the opportunity, but I don't know who will get the chance at last."
Flora said impatiently, "I don't care about who he is. I just want to finish my work." Both of them walked towards their company building.
Sunshine was a magazine. Flora had been hired after graduation and worked there for a whole year.
They had only entered the office on the fifteenth floor. Flora was summoned over to the editor-in-chief's office before she could even put down her things.
The editor-in-chief was a middle-aged woman over forty. Her name was Merry Yang. Flora was often praised by her because of how serious she was with her work.
Merry Yang's office was on sixteenth floor. Flora walked out of the elevator and walked over to her office and knocked on the door.
Merry Yang's voice came from inside. "Come in."
Flora pushed the door open and walked straight in without making noise as she was wearing a pair of UGG boots.
"Ms. Yang." Flora stood at a distance from Merry Yang's desk.
Merry Yang was reading a document when Flora called her. She put down her pen and looked up at Flora.
"Flora, I have a case for you." Although Merry Yang was more than forty years old, she still looked young because of how well she had taken care of herself.
Flora stared at her in confusion. "What is it, Ms. Yang?"
Merry Yang flashed her a smile as she explained, "Recently, the general manager of Shen Group, William Shen, has come back from abroad. He is the person that all the media outlets want to get in touch with. So naturally, Sunshine also needs to work hard. I've decided to send you to interview him. You will be responsible for the new column 'Celebrity Memory' that we are planning."
Flora was stunned. She had never thought that this task would fall on her. But since she was a workaholic, she would never give up no matter how difficult it was.
It was the third day since she broke up with Ivan. Flora recovered quickly. She didn't give up herself like other people who had been abandoned and cheated on by their lovers. Or perhaps because of that strange man's words at that night had really affected her.
Merry Yang looked at Flora carefully and noticed the bags under her eyes. "Flora, didn't you get a good rest last night?"
Flora came back to her senses and shook her head. "No, it's nothing. I will try my best to finish my task."
"That's good. Take care of yourself and don't get too tired." Merry Yang had also worked hard since she was a young girl. Thus, she could understand Flora.
Flora nodded, "Okay. I'll go to work then." Merry Yang nodded her agreement before Flora took her leave. The moment she closed the door behind her, she felt more tired. Flora took a deep breath and thought to herself,
'You can't think too much. Flora, come on. Work hard. Otherwise you may lose your job!' She actually had to encourage herself to go to work. Instead of taking the elevator, she took the stair to stable her worrying mind.
As soon as she returned to her seat, Selina Gu came to her. Her seat was on the opposite side of Flora's. Selina Gu gave her a curious smile and asked, "What was it about? What did Ms. Yang want you to do? Did she criticize the program we made last month?"
Flora sat on the chair quietly. After cleaning her table, she looked up and smiled, "Don't worry. I didn't get scolded, but I was assigned the task you were talking about this morning. I can't believe this!"
As soon as Selina Gu heard that the interviewing job fell on Flora, she became more excited. She beamed and exclaimed, "Flora, you must be so happy to have such a good opportunity. I heard that William Shen is a handsome man, and most importantly, he is single. All women are coveting him and ready to throw themselves at him."
Flora seldom cared about these things, so she had no idea who William was, nor did she have interest in him. It was not until Selina Gu and the editor-in-chief told her that she knew the general manager of Shen Group was William Shen.
"It's time to work. Send me the information you have collected about William Shen." Flora smiled and turned on the computer.
Soon Flora received the document she asked from Selina Gu. She wasted no time in opening it and taking a look. She was taken aback, because what she found out was astonishing. William indeed was an excellent businessman.
He was thirty-five years old, elegant and mysterious. He graduated from the Stanford University with a master's degree in economics. He had never dated any woman before.
After reading the information, Flora wondered the man must be difficult to get along with. 'He must be very arrogant,' she thought.
"Flora, what do you think about William Shen? Doesn't he seem the best? Would you like to be his girlfriend?" Selina Gu turned around and asked her with a teasing smile. She was so confident that anyone who saw William would be infatuated with him.
"You're only focusing on his outside," Flora said seriously before resuming her work.
Selina Gu was stunned by Flora's sharp comeback before she turned back and shrugged off the comment.
William's office was on the thirty-fifth floor. The entire floor was empty except for the office. The uniqueness of the floor was that the walls were all French windows. Standing there, one could see the bustling streets of the city and all kinds of people.
At this moment, in front of one such window stood a slender figure, dressed in a black casual suit, with a goblet filled with Chateau Lafite in his hand. It was the most famous wine in the world.
A knock on the door caught his attention. He turned when a young man entered the room. "Mr. Shen," he called out.
William's face was devoid of any expression as he looked at his assistant Devin Mu.
"What?" Although William's voice was calm, it was a firm tone.
Devin Mu handed a document to William and said, "Mr. Shen, many newspapers, magazines and TV programs have called to ask if you can give them time for an interview."
William slightly frowned. "You don't need to ask me about this kind of thing in the future. You know, these interview sessions are the last thing on my priority list."
Devin Mu nodded. "Yes, Mr. Shen. There is another appointment today. You have an appointment with Mr. Lionel Wang at eight o'clock in the evening.
Lionel Wang was the CEO of Wang Group. The meeting was for the land in the western side of the city. William smirked. "Got it. You're dismissed now. Go back to your work."
Devin Mu turned around and left. William's office area was large. He stood alone for a few seconds by the window. Then he walked back to his desk and took a look at the document that Devin Mu had just given him.
The night fell. Around eight o'clock, SURB Restaurant was so quiet.
It was the favorite place among the young people. The food and drink here were expensive.
In a private booth on the left side of the second floor, William was sitting there with a teacup in his hand. He looked expressionless. Lionel Wang was sitting opposite to him. They were being accompanied by with other businessmen.
"William, do you think we can acquire the land in the west of the city?" Lionel Wang asked. He was an old acquaintance of William's father, and he also knew that the land was really valuable. If the Wang Group got the opportunity of having it, they would be benefited the most. He smiled meaningfully at William. He was determined to get the land.
William glanced sharply at Lionel Wang. He couldn't help felt sorry for the people who always considered him as a good man.
"Mr. Wang, as you know, many companies are competing for the land. Just come to the auction and we'll see who gets the land," William said in a firm voice. He was so confident while speaking. A sly smile was playing at the corners of his mouth. His demeanor indeed made other slightly nervous.
Lionel Wang smiled back. "Come on. Let's not talk about business while drinking." He raised his glass to cheer up the environment.
William's brows furrowed together. If his father hadn't asked him to attend the party, he perhaps would've already left. He loosened his tie a little and said nothing.
"Anne, where are you?" A young woman's voice came from outside the door. Hearing it, William got slightly distracted. It sounded familiar. Although he never cared to remember anyone's voice, he particularly knew who this voice belonged to.
It was the girl he met that night. William saw her through the door. Although they hadn't seen each other for many days, he recognized her at a single glance. She seemed to have drunk a lot because she looked awry. William had always been a good observer.
In the corridor, Flora was so drunk that her eyes actually began to close in. She was supposed to have dinner with Anne. But when Anne mentioned Ivan's name, Flora couldn't stop herself from spilling everything to her friend and breaking in to a crying mess. To hide her pain, she drank a lot. Anne even said she would beat Ivan up. It was only a few moments ago that Flora left for washroom.
After coming out, Flora couldn't find their private booth. She approached the door she found first and read the number carefully. "Room 201." She giggled, pointing at the number. "Yes, that's it!" After saying so, she turned the doorknob fumblingly.
But when she opened the door, she didn't see Anne anywhere. There were three men sitting inside and three coquettish women were in their arms.
'Err? Where is Anne?' Flora frowned in confusion. "Anne? Where are you?"
The men sitting inside couldn't help laughing when they saw such a beautiful young girl break in. One of them stood up and walked straight to Flora. He looked carefully at the strange woman. She almost looked like a high school student in a white dress and no makeup.
"Girl, who are you looking for? Are you lonely? Join us." The man smiled evilly taking the opportunity.
As soon as the man touched Flora's face, she felt uncomfortable. A disgusting feeling washed all over her body.
"Who are you?" Flora blinked his eyes to adjust her vision. She had drunk too much and now was feeling dizzy. If she hadn't leaned against the door, she might have fallen by now. But subconsciously, she knew it already that the man in front of her was not a good man. She took a step back and tried to leave the room.
The man seemed to have noticed that she was trying to leave. He hastily grabbed Flora's hand and pulled her into his arms. "Guys, I didn't expect that I would meet such a wonderful woman today. I bet one million that she is still a virgin. "
"You won't know until you see it for yourself," one of the other men said with a coy smile. He leaned forward and forced a kiss on the woman in his arms.
Flora struggled to get away from him. When she heard the conversation between the two men, she understood their intention. She pinched herself to get a hold, but the man was so strong. She couldn't get rid of him. The man held her more tightly.
"Come on, let me kiss you." Looking down at her fair skin in front of him, Paul Ling felt itchy to kiss her.
"No! Go away. I came here looking for my friend. Don't mess with me. Anne!" Flora shouted out in fear, but the only response she received was cruel laughter.
