Overcoming the past

My wedding was just at the corner, just 2 weeks to go and I was so excited to become the next Mrs Renata Cancino. My name is Renata Sanchez Vidal a young and promising biologist. I just came out from the 's office with a big smile on my face because I was just promoted in my job from the position of laboratory technician to bioinformatics director.

I met my fiance while we were both in college and since then we have been in a relationship for the past 5 years. It was not until 3 month ago when he knelt down on one knee to finally propose to me. And guess what, I said yes. We both were working in the same company as laboratory technicians not until today when I was finally promoted to be the director of a field in the company called bioinformatics.

And to even top it all I finally got an increase in my salary which was way better than the one they were paying me as a laboratory technician.

And here comes my fiance Alonso Cancino. Babe I just came out from your office and you weren't there where were you and why haven't you been picking my calls, he asked. Oh I just came out from the manager's office and guess what I finally got promoted. This is good news once we have finished we should go out to celebrate.

And oh babe, I just remembered, have you registered the kit under my name which I have been working on???. And he replied not yet, you know that we have been busy with our wedding arrangements and I haven't had the chance to register the kit in your name, I am sorry I will do it when I am less busy, he said and gave me a kiss on my forehead before walking away.

*Two days later*

Oh my God we finally did it our own house, I exclaimed. This is what both of us have been dreaming of to get an apartment before the wedding. Sweetheart I know you would be frustrated because you used your own money to buy this apartment and I did nothing to contribute I hope you won't see me as a failure who can't afford an apartment, Alonso said. Don't worry sweetheart my money is also your money and my house is also your house don't feel ashamed because I love you so much and I know that just like me you will be soon be promoted.

*ALONSO POV*

I can't believe it she got promoted while I am still working as a laboratory technician, how ridiculous. All I could only do was to smile and pretend as if I was okay with her promotion, I wasn't at all. We both started working at the laboratory together at the same time and at the same day how could she of all the people finally get promoted when she is a woman .

I am very sure she must have seduced the manager to finally get promoted. She has been getting along well with the manager these past few months and I am sure she must have seduced him.

THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING

Oh Renata you have to come with us tonight I am very sure you wouldn't want to miss your bachelorette party. This is the last party you will ever have to be a fiancee before you finally get married tomorrow. Come on what do you think??, what do you say??, are you coming or are you not coming???, my friends kept asking me these questions has we were heading back home.

Sure I will come and why not, I replied to them.

They were really right about one thing this is surely going to be my last night as a fiancee and tomorrow I will be becoming somebody's wife, so why not have the time of our lives now??.

We arrived the bar and before you know they already asking me to drink, I couldn't reject the offer because we were all here to have fun and that I will do. And so I drank. Let's play a little game shall we?? Said one of my friends name Ariana. What's the game about??, I asked.

Then she said you will put on a blindfold and guess the person that kissed you on the cheek, either from their scent or breath. I wasn't sure but I didn't want to kill the fun they were having so I agreed. Let the game begin said Ariana 1,2 ready go.

Someone gave me a peck as soon as the game began and again instead of pecking me someone kissed me directly on my lips, I was hearing voices everywhere and I was too excited when I said Alonso, babe is that you and then I took off my blindfold.

And to my greatest surprise I ended up kissing the manager of the company, I was so shocked that this happened and I was afraid that this could affect my wedding which was tomorrow. Renata calm down it was only a game I am very sure Alonso will understand this if you talk to him, Ariana said.

Yes she's right this is only a game nothing bad was going to happen. Alonso will surely understand from my own point of view. I just hope he understands, will he???

Well after what felt like an eternity I finally got home. I didn't even have time to relax from what had happened. Renata dear, how was your bachellorette party? exactly the question I was dreading to reply, I hope you had fun because it is clearly visible from your face that something bad happened or am I wrong??? My mom said.

Oh mommy, yes I know it's weird that I am still calling my mommy "mommy" but I can't help it. Mommy I kissed a guy that wasn't Alonso all because of a very stupid game and it turns out that that guy is my boss, my manager.

Oh my dear I think you should call Alonso to explain to him about what happened because who knows if rumours might start flying around by tomorrow. Yes mommy I will call him.

"WEDDING"

The D-Day has finally arrived it's my wedding day guys, I am finally going to become the new Mrs Renata Cancino, I said to my parents. Calm down Renata or you are going to ruin your makeup you don't want to go out looking like a clown on your own wedding right??, Said my mom. That will be the last thing I will ever want to happen today, I said.

THE CHURCH

Oh mom, it has been thirty minutes and yet Alonso hasn't even arrived I wonder what is delaying him for him to arrive late on his own wedding day. Before I could even relax my self because I was getting nervous with every minute that was passing by when I heard Alonso's voice.

Renata, Renata how could you??, I trusted you a lot and this is how you could betray me. I knew everything was weird when surprisingly you were given a promotion while I wasn't. And now I finally have my answers, you slept with the manager of the laboratory and that's how you got the promotion.

Haven't you seen the video that has been going online since today??, how you kissed the manager of our laboratory as if both of you were in some kind of a relationship.

I felt my whole world crumbling down, I didn't even understand what he was talking about, when did I ever participate in a video with my boss.

When I saw the video I noticed that this was the exact time we did the game and this was the exact time the kissing happened. Who took this video I didn't intend to kiss him you all should believe me it was all a game, it was all a setup, someone didn't want this wedding to hold today that's why they recorded this video. I am innocent, I didn't do anything wrong, believe me, I continued screaming at everyone as my guests kept on leaving one by one.

Renata please stop crying or you are going to make me cry , my brother Eric said to me. Renata please stand up, I know you are heartbroken but we would need to go back home since everyone has already left even the priest.

I silently stood up as we hailed a taxi to go home.

HOME

Who would have thought that in the midst of everyone I call my friends there is still a rat that didn't want my wedding to become a reality. I was just so confused what I ever did to deserve this type of wickedness from that person that resulted to them recording that video of me kissing my boss, I didn't offend anyone and yet someone close to me offended me.

The only consolation is that I still have my parent's and brother's love and support to keep me going, because if not for them I would have done something stupid today.

MONDAY MORNING

I didn't want to arrive at work this Monday morning but I had no choice. All because my wedding couldn't be held on Saturday doesn't mean my career should just end because of a failed wedding.

Renata, could you please come over to the manager's office, he would want to see you. I was surprised with the appointment because the manager never called any of the employees unless it was very urgent.

I just hope I won't lose my job today all because of the video that has been circulating online throughout the weekend.

Well Renata I know you will be very surprised about why I called you so urgently but first I would like to ask about the completion of your kit that you have been working on. Well, Mr. Rodriguez (the name of our manager) the kit completion is around the corner which means it will soon be completed and will soon begin to start its sale in this laboratory.

I know this would sound weird Renata but I would like to know in what name you registered the kit, I answered him saying well I asked Alonso to help me register it under the name, why do you ask??.

I just wanted to hear directly from you that that kit isn't yours but Alonso's since the kit hasn't been registered under your name because I have proof of a document that wrote that that kit was registered under Alonso's name and not yours.

I thought he was saying gibberish until he said that my kit was registered under Alonso's name. I don't understand what this manager is saying, everyone saw me working day and night on this kit, and all of a sudden the manager is saying that the kit doesn't belong to me.

Mr. Rodriquez what are you saying??, of all people should know how much energy I put into working on this kit, and all of a sudden just because my name is not registered on the kit means that I am not the rightful owner of this kit.

Oh, Renata please stop saying nonsense you and I both know that you were just helping Alonso on his kit because he was your fiancé and maybe he promised a very fine commission that you would get after the kit has been completed.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing today from my manager. I have been working on this kit ever since I was in high school and all of a sudden I am misunderstood by my manager. What I can't even understand is why Alonso registered that kit under his name when he completely knows that that kit is mine.

Well, Renata with that being said I have no other choice but to fire you because of your lack of sincerity. We don't condone liars and thieves who steal other people's ideas and make it all their own in the name of being popular. I want you to go back to your desk, pack your stuff, and leave this laboratory right this instant.

I couldn't believe it after working for this laboratory for the past four years and yet I was laid off without anyone even investigating the issue. I don't even know what I will do after I leave the doors of the laboratory. Where will I start looking for a job? today will be one of the worst days of my life.

As I arrived at my former desk all the memories while working on this desk all came back to me. I need to talk to Alonso to make him change his name on the kit to mine since it belongs to me and also to explain to me why he registered the kit with his name.

*OUTSIDE THE LABORATORY*

Alonso, Alonso I am so glad that you have finally arrived to resume work today there was a misunderstanding concerning the name you registered my kit as, I would love you to correct the mistake and also for you to clarify to everyone that that kit is mine.

I am sorry Renata but I don't know what you are talking about, that kit is mine Renata that is why I registered it under my name, Alonso said.

I finally understood the reason every time I asked you if you had already registered the kit under my name you were just making flimsy excuses to buy time for yourself. I can't believe you could do this to me, even if all the employees don't believe me I expected you to at least justify that that kit is mine. And you are standing boldly saying that that kit is yours and not mine.

But why Alonso??, what did I ever do to you to deserve so much hatred, is it jealousy??, of course, it has to be jealousy, you were always jealous of the fact that just presently I got the promotion and you didn't.

You always hated the feeling that I got the promotion before you that is why you went ahead to register the kit under your name and not mine, you knew that once I was done with this kit I would surely be getting praise from the press and all our colleagues. you didn't like the fact that I am better than you that is why you did all of this. Answer me, Alonso, what I am saying is it all true??.

Yes Renata, yes Renata I did all that because it just had to be you stealing all the glory and the praises, I had to do what I had to do to secure a future for myself, Alonso said.

I promise you something Alonso that you will regret ever stealing my kit from me, that is my promise. You can keep all the praises and glory to yourself but you are going to regret this I promise you. I said walking away crying, I guess I don't have anything else to do again in this laboratory. And I thought that today I wouldn't lose my job but the opposite of what I wanted happened in a way that I didn't even expect.
