The day my mother was buried, i slept with a strange man. i'm not proud of it but it was something i had to do. it's called "paying for his kind gesture towards me" i had no money or means to pay him back, so i decided giving him my body was the best thing to do. eight years later, i don't think it was the best decision i had made but seeing my sextuplets killed every thought of regrets i had.
******
" push, push harder miss madelyn. " the doctors in the room kept urging me to keep my eyes open and push even more harder. doesn't it end? two babies out already and i'm still pushing. how many little humans are in there?
" miss madelyn, congrats you have given birth to triplets. two boys and a girl." the nurse announced and i heaved a sigh of relief.
" wait a minute, there's one more. push ms." one of the doctors interrupted and i fell back to the pillow as a tear escaped my eyes. just how many babies were in this womb of mine? three babies already and there's one more? how am i ever going to care for them?
" push, madelyn. push!!" one more baby added.
flashback, nine months ago.
***
i stood at her grave after dropping a bunch of hibiscus on her tombstone. they had just buried my mom after her tragic death. as i stood and read the words inscribed on her tombstone again and again, i realized she would finally be free and happy.
she was married to my dad at a young age, more like sold to my dad to pay off the debts her parents owed him. but mom never finished paying for those debts, twenty four years later and she was still working hard for my vile father.
" evelyn adrian. aged 44"
her name and age was boldly written on her stone. she was so young but was physically aged. she aged more quickly because of the tremendous work she had to do for her husband over the twenty four years of being married. my father drove my mother to her early grave, and i still find it hard to forgive him.
a woman who was legally married, a decent woman who was sold off by her parents to a monster at the age of twenty was made to work for my father, day after day and night after night. mr. adrian is a brutal beast who deserved nothing but death for the pains he inflicted on my mother and i.
he was filthy rich but made us suffer even for the smallest bit of remnant that fell off his table. he owned a& d company and a huge list of many other enterprises.
adrian would send my mother off to rich clients who refused to bulge and accept the proposals he made. my mother's body would be desecrated by those filthy, potbellied men who couldn't look past a beautiful woman without lusting after her.
she carried out every task as asked by my father, for twenty four years and without a complaint. i knew how hurt and dirty she felt, having all the men in the city warm her bed in return for a favour for her husband's company.
i wouldn't say my mom was stubborn or was weak. she was doing everything she could to protect her kids and save me from the wrath of my father. she kept hoping when she gave birth to kids, her husband would change for the better. but did he? he only got worse daily. even after birthing three children, he never changed his ways.
my younger siblings, cara and craig took after our father. i was the only one my poor mom could confide in, the only one who she could cry to. apart from being a devil who asks his wife to pleasure different men for his own selfish advantage, my dad was an alcoholic. several times he would come home and derive pleasure in beating mom. i confronted him a few times and got the belt turned on me instead.
on the morning that mom died, she was on her way to see mr. nathalie. mr. nathalie was the ceo of walmart int'l and as usual, dad resorted to using his wife's body to buy the pervert over. the cab she was in had an head-on head collision with a truck and she gave up the ghost few hours later.
my vicious father took no pity on the dead woman. all he could do was stand there and ask why she didn't die after completing the task he had given her. i concluded it's either he sold his heart to the devil or her had no heart at all.
without my mom, i won't be able to survive. realizing just how much of a cold blow death had given me, i fell to my knees and wept. i was weeping more for myself than her death, i knew my father would come for me next. he cherished my other siblings because they did his bidding. i was the only one who could defy him. though he tried so much to hide it, he was scared of me.
" i'm glad you are finally free off the shackles of slavery, mom. but still i wish you were here. as much as i want you to rest peacefully, i want you back."
before i could mutter a few more words, someone grabbed me by the hair and drew me up. just as i had guessed, it was no other person than lucifer himself.
" what are you still doing here, madelyn? do you wished to buried alongside her? you lay here and waste those tears of yours, who would fetch me more money and business deals now that your stupid mother is no more?"
money and business deals? was it the only thing this man cared for? he wasn't even at the slightest, remorseful a human had died because of his greed?
yes, i was weak without my mom but it's time i put him in his place.
" fetch you money? as what? your money making machine, huh?" i yelled at him and it shook him for a few seconds. my sister cara was not in the least surprised. she held out an umbrella for dad as it was beginning to rain lightly.
" shut your mouth, madelyn. you and your dead mother are nothing without me. you will never be anyone useful without my help. why do you think people hold you in high esteem? it's because you bear my name, madelyn. a name i gave you for free, so get your ass to work."
the rain came down in tiny droplets but got a little heavy with each passing second. in a few minutes it was raining heavily and my black dress clung to my skin as the rain poured down nonstop.
" ceo nicholas of the nick costumes has eyes for you. one night with him and a whooping sum of twenty billionaire dollars would be mine."
i was cold now. my hair and dress was wet and my legs ached from standing too long while on heels. i was so much disgusted by the attitude of someone who's supposed to be my father.
" i'm sorry to disappoint you but i'm not your puppy. i'm not someone you can toss around just like you did mom. ask your loyal puppet, cara to do that for you."
where i had the courage to stand up for myself was still a mystery to me. he wasn't surprised by my response, he had infact expected me to reply in the negative.
" you will do as i say, madelyn. you answer to me now." he stomped his feet in rage.
i chuckled dramatically and shook my head. " no, i only answer to whoever i choose to. excuse me."
i walked past him hurriedly but slowed my pace. my legs were aching and i was feeling dizzy.
" madelyn, get back here. cara, quickly go after her. she must be stopped."
i hadn't gone far and i could be caught if they had insisted to come after me. i heard my sister laugh wryly and said;
" don't worry about her, she can't go too far. her drink had been laced earlier, i'm sure she would be lightheaded by now."
they drugged my drink? their laughter became louder and my head was spinning. i could barely keep my eyes open and my legs seemed too weak to move any further.
i heard the loud screeching of tyres and i figured out i was standing at the highway meant for cars. the man in the black suv had alighted and made his way for me as i waved frantically with the last strength in me. i was lucky he stopped just in time, i would have been hit.
i fell and he was quick to catch me. he had come out with an umbrella but he ended up wet cause he had to carry me back to his car in a bridal way.
" h.. help ...me" and i blacked out in his arms.
if this man was willing to help me and take me far away from here, i would give him my body in return.
... and he did help me and i fulfilled the promise i had made. i gave my virginity to a total stranger.
end of flashback*****
" keep pushing, he's almost out. keep pushing madelyn. hey, hey keep your eyes open. madelyn push!!"
the tiny voice of my baby was heard. i closed my eyes almost immediately. i had birthed six babies. and they would grow up without a father.
their father is the strange man i had slept with on the day mother was buried..
lights out..
Eight years later.
Kai's POV.
" Mr. Black, Mr. Black Sir.."
Whatever it was he wanted, that made him run after me that way had better be something important.
" Mr. Black, I .."
" What is it Jim? It's so early in the morning, don't you think the company could use a bit of tranquility? Keep it down, you are being too loud."
" I apologize sir. I just wanted to inform you that there's a package waiting for you in your office. A delivery guy brought it and said it was something important."
I replied with a nod and made my way for the elevator. Jim stood at my side and we headed for the 21st floor. I gazed at my wristwatch briefly to confirm the time. As we stood in the elevator, my mind wandered freely. What's the package about? I have no idea who's bringing a present as early as it was. Grandma would send a text few minutes to the delivery guy arriving and we were not expecting any wrapped box from a business partner, at least not for this week.
I tugged at my tie and let it go when I was concerned it looked more better than before. Straightened my suit and maintained the ' oh so cheesy and arrogant' CEO Black's signature look.
Just a few strides and I was out on the corridor heading for my office. Everyone I came across either exchanged pleasantries or nod and scurry away in fright. It's no fault of theirs, not everyone would be able to stand in presence of his or her ruthless Boss who doesn't cover up for incompetence and isn't even merciful.
Maybe they were frightened only at the mention of my name, but one thing is certain. I actually do look good. It's a fact well known. I can't afford to miss the gazes the ladies in my company throw my way. It's always so kind of me to gently remind them with my confident look that I do know I look too good. And this morning is no exception. Even while dashing away, they always make sure to have a glance at my well carved, perfect body and my face..
Took a left turn with Jim right behind me and I set my briefcase on my desk. He was right, there was a box on my table. Contents still unknown but we wouldn't if we don't tear open the box.
My long fingers set to work quickly while Jim stood at the door. His facial expression just as mine, we were both confused.
" Did the delivery guy leave already? There are no notes as to who this is from." it was more of a whisper rather than a question but Jim nodded anyway.
There was nothing inside. Nothing except a piece of paper. It was a DNA test and..
" Hello daddy!" a young boy of no more than seven who we hadn't noticed all this while jumped out from my desk. Right, we didn't notice anyone was in there cause the kid was obviously hiding under my desk.
Who the hell will let his or child run into my office and play some prank on me? That would be handled accordingly later but for now I was more concerned about the word he had said.
He called me daddy. Not like I was married or had any kids..
" My name is Liam. My fifth brother and second sister was right. You really do look like us."
That sentence earned a chortle from the 'oh so grumpy, arrogant asshole of a CEO who never showed his perfectly set of dentition.'
If I was correct, children were supposed to look like their parents and not the other way. I laughed genuinely but the laughter died down as quickly as it came. In it's stead, was a scowl and raised brows as I examined the boy. He was right. He did look like me, he was like the younger version of me.
" Who.." I was cut off by him.
" We have been expecting you for the past six years, daddy. And when it seemed you were not going to come, I and my siblings spent our time searching for clues. That DNA test was done seven years ago.." he spat everything out so quickly and I returned my focus to the piece of paper in my hand.
It said right there that I was his father but how could that be?
" Liam, Liam.." we heard a voice outside. It belonged to a young girl in her mid- twenties. She surely looked like a delivery guy and she shared a few facial features with Liam..
" You can't go in, ma'am. This is CEO Black's office." Jim announced when she tried to run in.
" And so? I don't give a hoot about him young man. I'm only here for my son. Now, step out of my way you moron!"
I must say she's got such an attitude. She was extremely pissed about Liam being here. Why wouldn't she be? He clearly brought a DNA test result to me.
" Liam!! What are you doing here mister? Shouldn't you be in school?"
" Mommy mommy, look, I found daddy." Liam exclaimed and I saw her face become pale. She was sweating uncontrollably and it became difficult to breathe. Just that single statement from him seeped out life from her.
Trying to compose herself, she muttered as she held Liam in her arms...
" I'm sorry honey but your dad is dead. He died before you were born, Liam"
" No, he didn't. He's right here." I chimed in, scanning the DNA test for the twentieth time. Her face, it looks so familiar.
She swung around to reply me but paused when her gaze fell on me. If she keeps holding her breath, we might have to get an ambulance soon. Colour had already been drained from her cheeks and I stared down at a white, slender lady.
Without taking her eyes off me, she drew Liam to her side and held him tightly.
" I'm sorry for my son's attitude Sir. He's just a kid and kids could be naughty at times. Please ignore whatever he said." she apologized quickly and for a second I would have acted like this didn't happen, I would have if I didn't hold a copy of a DNA test result or if I didn't see past the slight glint of fear in her eyes. The kind that says all the kid has said has been nothing but the truth.
She turned to Liam and scolded him. Whatever she thinks she's doing is fine by me, even if she keeps lying to my face but I'm certain of one thing; she isn't leaving here with my son.
My eyes scanned her body and I could have missed that little butterfly at the back of her neck. It's... It's the same as the girl from that night..
" It's you." I whispered, a small part of me hoping she would deny it.
Realization dawned on her that she had been caught and there was no need to lie anymore now.
" It's.." the little choking sounds as she gasped for air..
" You dared keep my child away from me? For fucking seven years? How could you? What other things are you hiding from me?"
" If I had told you about him, would you have believed it to be true? Wouldn't you label me a whore?" her hands were on Liam's ears before she said that.
" That's no excuse to keep my son away from me! I didn't give you the right to.."
My eyes went to the door and for once, I was relieved. Jim had probably left earlier when he figured things were going to get messy and he did me the favour of shutting the door quietly on his way out.
" Well hello, I don't care what you think is right or not." she was suddenly bold and held no words back. Just as me, she had noticed Jim was no longer in my office and that gave her a whole room to spit out words.
" Mommy, Daddy.. can you stop arguing? My siblings would be waiting for our retur.." her hand went around his mouth, stopping him from saying any more words.
But I was quick to catch the main word. Siblings. He wasn't the only one she kept away, she kept God knows how many babies away from me..
"Siblings? Do you have any other babies I should know about?" with eyes narrowed, I stared at her watching her battle with herself on what lie to tell.
" No. There are no more you should know about. Liam is your son.." her voice was laced with fear. She was hiding something from me but at least she admitted Liam was my son.
" I have five other siblings daddy!" Liam's voice filled her with terror and she wrapped her hand more tightly.
" What are you hiding from me?"
Madelyn's POV
I shoved Liam behind me and stared directly at the father of my children. I had no idea he was this rich, and until today I had no idea he was the CEO of this company and also the man I had slept with years ago. I had always delivered packages to other departments in the company but none of us knew the other.
I was panting for air. It wasn't until then that I realized I had been holding my breath. I was more than petrified. Liam had already risked being know by his father, if Black found about the other children, he would surely take them away from me. If it was taken to court, I'm sure he would win. I had no money, and money was the grease for us to win against CEO Black.
" I'm not hiding anything else. It's just Liam, he's your child and that's all the information you need to know about me."
" What I need to know or not are not decided by you. I make the decisions here, lady."
Arrogant asshole! If I hadn't been trying to get away from Dad and Cara, I wouldn't have slept with you moron, in the first place. But then, I was clearly at fault. He asked for nothing in return, I insisted I wasn't going to leave his house without doing so. Still, I'm not the only one at fault, at least a gentleman would have said no.
And so the battle continues in my head.
" Now, don't make me ask twice.."
Guess this was the end of the road for me. If I lied that Liam had no siblings, he would eventually find out. So, selective truth would help than a blatant lie.
" I have six kids.. But they're not yours, only Liam is your child." I basically told a truth and a lie. If I was only going to loose Liam to him, then I can survive with the heartache. I can't imagine loosing all six babies to him.
" Mom, that's a lie! Daddy don believe her, my siblings look just like you too."
Liam!!! This little kid doesn't know how disappointed I am that he even came here all alone in the first place, let alone bringing the DNA result test along. How did they even find their father when I myself can't even recognize him?
" Shut your mouth, Liam. I gave birth to my kids and I know what's the truth or not. Be quiet, or else.." I scolded him immediately and though I was being too harsh, I was doing all it takes to protect my kids from being taken away.
" You won't dare talk to my son in that manner you wh.." maybe he subconsciously remembered Liam was right behind us so he swallowed whatever nasty words that were threatening to leave that arrogant mouth of his.
" Go on. Say it. A whore? Cause I simply had kids for another man? Are you my husband?" I replied in defense. The last thing I would take is insults from a man who couldn't reject the advances of a girl simply because he knew he wouldn't be in the least affected.
" What's your name?" not even an apology. An egoistic fellow to the core.
Now, Mr. Grumpy is suddenly interested in knowing my name. I mean, he wouldn't have thought there was any need for it that night. It was a one time thing and there was no need for personal details. We were done and I disappeared as quickly as I had appeared in his life. Who would have thought I would even had gotten pregnant or find out we live in the same city?
" Madelyn." that came out like a sneeze.
" I'm CEO Black. I will be taking full responsibility for my child. Grandma would be so happy to see him. She had always wanted grandchildren."
I was bored. Hell no mister, I'm not interested in listening to some ancient tale on how much your grandma loved kids. I have better things to worry about.
" And he will be staying with you. I'm not taking him away, completely. He has my name now and every benefit he's supposed to have as CEO Black's child. Including my love and support."
He spoke so perfectly well. His accent was flawless and his composure was something I had never seen in others. He was no double a horrible person but he seems to have his good sides.
" Now, whose kids are those? The remaining five children you had. How old is Liam and what age range do they fall in?"
Seriously? You might as well ask how many men I have slept with, how many times I had aborted babies or how many men were warming my bed every single night.
" Liam is seven. You don't need to know anything about the rest kids. Like I said, they're not yours! So why the need for personal details?"
" Valerie is seven daddy! Same as Chloe, Newton, Nicholas and Daniel."
" Liam!!!!" this was obviously me screaming for the umpteenth time. Why do kids never know when to interrupt conversations or when exactly to keep their mouths shut?
A smile crawled slowly on his lips as he crouched to Liam's level and threw his hand on his shoulder as he subtly forced out information out of him. And Liam being Liam would have told him all he needed to know except he wouldn't be doing so this time. My death glare sent a message across and he kept his mouth shut.
" Liam, could you do daddy a favour?"
No response.
" Trust me, your mom wouldn't dare raise a finger on you. Can you tell me.."
" I don't know anything. I will leave you two to talk, I will wait outside your office daddy." Liam shut him up with that response and he nodded. He was obviously not going to force the truth out of the boy anymore.
" Good boy. Wait right outside while me and your daddy have a little chat, okay?"
He shook his head to indicate he had heard whatever it was I said. My son was pissed, I could see it. But if only he could understand. He's just a kid. When they're all grown up, I will tell them why I did this.
" So, what are you? Some sex worker who goes about sleeping with every strange person she comes across as long as he has a third leg?"
That was an insult to my person.
" Fine. So what about you? Do you go about deflowering girls just because she insists on sex as a way to show gratitude?"
As I spoke, my eyes never left the door. It would be wild for Nathan to hear such nasty words. This was an adults-only conversation.
" At least I don't have kids littered all over the place!! Six kids in seven years? All for different men. Don't you take a fucking break? The last one is what? Nine months or a year old?"
I swore I could have landed a few slaps on his face but I would be a bit more polite to him, only if he stops being a critic who knows nothing about how I have been surviving with his kids.
" That's it. I'm out of here, can't stand you any longer. How do your workers even cope with you when you are such a bitter hypocrite? Stay out of our lives, we are doing just fine without you."
With clenched fists, he was about to yell at me again, this time for me demanding that he stay out of Liam's life but his phone rang and it saved me from more rude outbursts.
My eyes reverted to the door. Never being more thankful to God that an office was sound proof! If Liam heard even a bit of what his father said..
" Grandma? Where are you? Is something wrong?" His expression softened and a look of worry was visible in his hazel eyes. It was as if his world was about to end, paralyzed to the spot and holding his breath, waiting for her to drop the bomb.
" You are at the hospital? What happened? Are you okay?? Is the driver with you?" so many questions left his supple lips. Now that I really had the time to size him up without being caught, I realized for the first time he was a gorgeous young man. We had been arguing and I barely had the time to take him in.
" So you are fine? What about the kids? What were they even doing by the roadside? You say you ran into them on your way here?"
Relief surged through his body and he calmed down. I could tell how much he loved his grandma. Seconds ago, he had being panicking. Never for once would I have thought a creature like him was capable of having humane feelings. Not after all that he said to my face.
" They're responding to treatment? Alright, I'm on my way. Why would the parents be so callous and let their kids out of their sight? If they are not ready to keep an eye on their kids, then they should have made use of protection during intercourse!"
I rolled my eyes. He made it sound like parenting was that easy. Even I don't get to keep an eye on my kids 24/7. If I had a way of doing that, Liam wouldn't have been here.
He ended the call after asking his grandma to have the parents called. Whoever it was, he was definitely going to give them a three hours lecture on how to make use of a condom or contraceptive pills to avoid birthing kids they couldn't look after.
" What happened?" I found myself asking. Not like I cared anyway. I was only curious to find out because I heard some kids had been involved in an accident. For a second, my chest tightened and I fervently prayed my kids were safe at home.
" Two kids, of no less than seven got hit. Thankfully, there are no bruises. We will have this conversation some other time. I have to go see them. My grandma seems to have taken a liking in the children."
I nodded and our eyes locked. His hand slightly brushed mine and the hairs on my skin stood up. I never for once imagined a touch could have so much impact on me.
Quite a perfect moment. No words were exchanged but our eyes said a lot. Only for a brief moment, as my phone rang and I quickly answered. I was supposed to have delivered a package about thirty minutes ago.
" Hi, is this Miss Madelyn?"
What happened? Suddenly, I was feeling sick. Something was wrong, I could feel it.
" Yes. I'm Madelyn. What's wrong?"
"Well ma'am, two of your kids were involved in an accident. They gave us your contact. Names are Valerie and Daniel. City hospital, ward.." she went on to give the ward number but by brain had stopped working the moment she mentioned my kids barely survived being hit.
That was enough to make me have a panic attack.
" Ma'am? Are you still there?"
I saw Black's eyes ask a lot of questions. My knees were weak from carrying all of my weight.
" On my way!" I managed to say before dashing out of the office without a proper goodbye. He called out several times but I grabbed Liam's hand and we took the elevator. My kids were my life, every other thing could wait. I just wanted to see my babies.
