"I'm sorry, Sarafina, but I can't attend the party. Today is my sister's birthday, and I need to be there," Tabitha said on the phone as she drove her car to her house.
Tabitha had bought a cake for her sister, Bianca. She had also purchased a gift, and the thought of handing her sister the gift made Tabitha's heart beat faster.
Tabitha was excited. She couldn't wait to see the reaction on her sister's face when she wished her a happy birthday.
"I still laugh about how much you love your family. You still don't believe me when I say they don't love you. You don't need to attend her birthday, just come with me!" Sarafina, Tabitha's friend, said on the phone.
Sarafina's words irritated Tabitha.
"I've asked you not to make comments like that about my family. I find it offensive, and I'm going to end this call. Enjoy your party!" Tabitha responded, her voice tinged with anger.
Immediately after saying what she wanted to, Tabitha hung up the call.
Tabitha tossed her phone and focused on the road, fuming because of what her friend said or perhaps because her friend was right.
Regardless, Tabitha loved her family and didn't plan to listen to anyone's opinion about her family.
Soon, Tabitha arrived home, and the excitement she felt about giving her sister a gift filled her heart once more.
Tabitha carefully retrieved the cake from the passenger seat and then the gift she had bought for her sister. The gift was a beautiful dress, and its cost had been quite substantial, further emphasizing its value to Tabitha.
"I hope she likes it," Tabitha muttered as she envisioned the various reactions her sister, Bianca, might have when she received the gift.
With the cake and gift in hand, Tabitha made her way towards the entrance of her home, in a joyful mood.
"I don't think we should be doing this here, Donald," Bianca, a woman with short black hair, protested, pushing a man away.
"How can I resist you, Bianca?" Donald replied, pulling Bianca back into his embrace. He gazed at her with lust in his eyes as his hands roamed her body, eliciting a soft, suppressed moan from Bianca.
"Wouldn't you like a birthday present?" Donald asked, his breathing slightly heavy. His desire for Bianca was so intense that he had to rely on sheer willpower to restrain himself from indulging further.
"What if Tabitha catches us here?" Bianca inquired, her eyes locked with Donald's as his warm breath caressed her nose. While she wanted the same, she exercised caution. However, deep down, Bianca didn't really care if her sister caught them.
"Tabitha isn't home, darling. How about a birthday kiss?" Donald, who was actually Tabitha's fiancé, said to Bianca.
Tabitha entered the house, being careful with the way she carried the cake.
There was no actual party happening yet; any gathering was scheduled for the evening.
Tabitha had arrived early because she was too excited to wish her sister.
However, upon reaching the living room, she noticed how quiet the house was, so she gently placed the cake down and proceeded down the corridor that led to Bianca's room.
In the end, Bianca had agreed to let Donald in as they both succumbed to their carnal desires. They were passionately kissing their way into her room, and Tabitha managed to catch a glimpse of what was transpiring as they pushed each other into Bianca's room.
The intense desire between the two had become so overpowering that they were oblivious to Tabitha's approaching footsteps.
Tabitha's heart pounded fiercely, and she couldn't believe her eyes. She saw what she had seen but hoped deep down that it wasn't real.
Seeking confirmation, Tabitha headed straight to Bianca's room and cautiously opened the unlocked door.
The barely restrained moans and groans she could hear before she peeked into the room already painted a vivid picture of what was happening on the other side of the door. Still, she needed to see it with her own eyes.
Had she truly seen Bianca and Donald together, or had she made a terrible mistake?
Tabitha knew what she had seen and was merely trying to hold onto a glimmer of hope.
Bianca and Donald believed that Tabitha couldn't be home at that hour, but she was, and she caught them undressing in haste.
From what she witnessed, Tabitha realized that this couldn't have been their first time. The way they clung to each other made it painfully clear that they had been betraying her for a long time.
Tears welled up in Tabitha's eyes as she silently watched them. She left the door opened and quietly retreated from the scene.
Back in the living room, Tabitha gazed at the cake she had prepared for her sister on the center table. With trembling hands, she opened the cake box and used her fingers to smash the cake, consuming it herself.
"How could you do this to me?" Tabitha cried, the echoing moans throughout the house breaking her even more.
Tabitha was in tears. The person she had seen in Bianca's room was not an outsider; it was her own sister. How could she betray her like this?
No, how could they betray her?
Tabitha couldn't fathom the depth of the betrayal.
Tabitha, consumed by anger and heartbreak, tore the cake apart with her hands and devoured some of it.
Tabitha then turned her gaze to the box containing the beautiful dress she had purchased for Bianca.
Seeing the dress only intensified Tabitha's tears.
She swiftly removed her formal outfit and donned the dress meant for her sister.
Shortly after, Tabitha was on the phone with Sarafina outside the house.
"I'm coming."
Sarafina was excited that Tabitha had changed her mind and decided to attend the party.
However, instead of heading to the party, Tabitha entered her car and aimlessly drove around the city for hours. Her heart was shattered, and the idea of suicide even crossed her mind, but Tabitha didn't act on it.
Tabitha wept bitterly as she drove through the city, yearning for something to end her suffering, hoping for an accident or some misfortune. The pain and betrayal had taken a heavy toll on her.
Her heart was in pieces, and it felt as though her life had come to a devastating halt.
In her agony, she continued to weep.
When Tabitha brought her car to a stop, it was already night.
Even then, she rested her head on the steering wheel and continued to cry, overwhelmed by the excruciating pain she felt.
She recalled the five years she had spent with the man she had trusted.
Was it all a joke to him? Had he never been serious about their relationship?
Tabitha thought back to the moment she had discovered her sister and Donald in an intimate situation.
"How could you do this to me?" she muttered to herself as tears streamed down her face.
The pain was unbearable. Tabitha found it hard to breathe causing her to gasp for breath.
"How will I be able to go on, knowing that the man I've trusted all my life was a fake? He was the only one I thought understood me and my difficult life, but it was..."
Tabitha held her breath and struck the steering wheel in front of her.
"Ahhhh!" she screamed, unable to contain her anguish.
The car felt suffocating, prompting her to climb out, and moments later, she screamed again.
Inside Tabitha's car, her phone was ringing.
Sarafina was calling.
Tabitha remained lost in her sorrow, weeping and releasing the heavy burden in her heart.
After a while, Tabitha stopped shouting but continued to cry.
Her knees felt weak, so she sat on the floor, continuing to grieve.
It also pained Tabitha that she couldn't express her feelings to the people who had betrayed her.
After a few minutes, Tabitha reentered the car and drove away from that area, on her way to family house.
Tabitha didn't know why her hands, which controlled the steering wheel of the car as she drove, suddenly made a U-turn.
Something inside her just felt incomplete.
Tabitha took a moment away from her tearful state and was now driving back home.
She felt like she needed to speak her mind.
Tabitha felt she needed Bianca and Donald to understand that it wasn't okay for both of them to treat her so cruelly by betraying her.
As she drove, Tabitha pondered various things and began to realize some truths about her fiancé.
Taking a moment to revisit her past memories, Tabitha noticed how irritated Donald appeared whenever she was being affectionate or clingy.
She recalled how he distanced himself from her whenever she made plans for them to spend time together, often claiming to be busy with work.
Tabitha wasn't a relationship expert, but now, with a clearer mind, she realized that no one should be too busy for something or someone they genuinely cared about.
It dawned on her that Donald likely didn't consider her an important part of his life.
Tabitha also surmised that the reason he avoided her calls was probably because he was never truly in love with her.
All the signs were there for her to notice. She wondered if she had overlooked them or perhaps chose to ignore them subconsciously.
But the question that troubled her was why Donald was going through with the marriage if he knew he didn't love her.
Tears welled up in Tabitha's eyes once more. She wanted to pull over and cry, but she pushed herself to continue driving.
"No! I've allowed both of them to take advantage of me. I shouldn't..." Tabitha's voice trailed off as her heart ached, making breathing difficult.
"Why does it hurt so much?"
In agony, Tabitha drove back to her house.
She stepped out of the car and saw that the small party for Bianca's birthday had already begun.
Tabitha hesitated for a moment before getting back into the car. She turned around and drove to buy a small cake, then returned.
As she stared at her family's home, the pain she felt turned to anger.
Tabitha had always been a kind-hearted woman, quick to forgive, and willing to sacrifice for her family's happiness and comfort. She had always gone to great lengths to make her family happy.
In reality, now she saw that she had been incredibly naive.
She had mistaken the affection she received from her family for pure love, but it had become clear that she had been blind to their true feelings.
As she reflected on her past experiences with Donald, her thoughts also turned to her family.
Yet, despite these revelations, Tabitha still couldn't fully acknowledge it.
Tabitha entered the building and proceeded directly to the lobby where the small party was taking place.
She stood there for a moment, the painful image of her fiancé and sister together flashing through her mind as she heard her sister's voice call her name.
Tabitha hesitated but eventually turned to face Bianca, forcing a smile.
"Sister, I've been calling you. Where have you been?" Bianca inquired.
"I've been crying," Tabitha replied, her voice quivering.
"I saw a lady whose sister and fiancé were having an affair behind the lady's back, and it made me so sad that I took some time to cry for her. How sad," Tabitha explained.
The expressions on Bianca's face were clear.
The expression on Bianca's face revealed shock, confusion, and curiosity.
Then, Donald, the cause of Tabitha's heartache, joined the sisters.
"Wow!" Tabitha exclaimed, her tone laced with sarcasm.
"Isn't it a bit much for me to cry because of another woman's problem?" Tabitha asked as she approached Bianca.
"But unfortunately, it's not another woman. I am the one who got betrayed. Happy birthday, sister!" Tabitha presented the small cake and playfully pressed it onto Bianca's face.
Tabitha laughed, though her laughter was filled with more pain than amusement.
"I don't think that's enough," she continued, lifting her hand and giving Bianca's face a slap.
"How could you?!" she asked, practically shouting in a mix of anger and hurt.
"Would you stop it, Tabitha!"
To Tabitha's surprise, her fiancé scolded her and went to help Bianca.
Tabitha felt the urge to hit something heavy on Donald's head.
"How could you, Donald?!"
Tabitha's action had caught the guests' attention.
The lobby was filled with people of high status, most of whom were Bianca's friends. Some of these friends knew Tabitha.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones, the sisters' parents, weren't present at this moment, so they were unable to defend their favorite daughter, Bianca, as they often did.
"How could you do this to me, Donald? I thought we were real. I thought you loved me deeply, but..."
Donald turned to face Tabitha. He couldn't hold back any longer.
"Bianca has everything you don't have, Tabitha. She's beautiful, she has the best behavior, she isn't as clingy as you, she isn't so vulnerable, she doesn't make life uncomfortable for me. She's the real daughter of the Jones family! She has everything I want in a woman, and you... how could I tell you that I don't feel any bit of love for you when you are always acting pathetic?! I felt so sorry for you, and I couldn't tell you that I don't love you. Finally, you found out yourself!"
Tabitha was shocked by everything Donald blurted out.
She was stunned to hear that Donald never loved her, and tears welled up in her eyes. However, this didn't stop Tabitha from hitting Donald's face.
"Why?" She cried.
"Was it wrong to be me?" Tabitha's face suddenly darkened when she recalled a particular statement Donald had just made.
"What do you mean by Bianca being the real daughter?" Tabitha asked.
"Mother and father never told you," Bianca walked in after receiving treatment from her friends who helped her wipe her face.
"You aren't their real child. You are just the daughter of our mother's step-sister who died after giving birth to you. Mother and father, being so kind, adopted you and gave you a good life but you always asked for more. You were never grateful and couldn't stay in the place you belong. No one considers you as family. We are just being kind to you!"
Tabitha was utterly stunned.
She couldn't even let any words out.
"So this is why mother and father always took Bianca's side," Tabitha thought.
Back in school, when Bianca bullies children, she'd end up making it seem like Tabitha was at fault. Tabitha would get punished for things she didn't do. Tabitha barely celebrated her birthday the way Bianca did. Bianca always had an opportunity to move forward with her career, but it wasn't the same for Tabitha.
"Why didn't I notice this all along?" Tabitha asked the question, but to herself.
With their parents, Bianca had everything she wanted, but Tabitha had to struggle for hers.
"You were just too naive and too good for yourself, Tabitha. I have your man now, so what else do you have left? You are just a nobody and will always be a nobody!" Bianca showed her true colors to Tabitha and felt good about it.
Tabitha turned to look at Bianca.
"How foolish of you," she stated.
"If a man can betray a woman after being committed to her, what's the guarantee that he wouldn't do the same to another woman?" Tabitha asked, causing Bianca's eyebrows to crease.
"I don't want a man like Donald. He's too childish, and I'll gladly give him to you. As for the part of me being a nobody, I'll prefer to be a nobody than to be the sister who had a secret affair with the man her sister planned to marry. Enjoy him; I don't care."
Tabitha said to them and left the scene with a broken heart.
Tabitha stepped out of the house and surveyed her surroundings. Her knees felt weak, her throat burned from holding back tears, and her body trembled.
Tabitha was both physically and mentally distressed. Her heart raced as if she had just finished running a marathon. The more she thought about everything she had just discovered, the thirstier she became.
Taking a few forceful deep breaths to calm her heavy breathing, Tabitha walked over to where her car was parked. With her head down, she rested her arms on the car's hood.
In this position, Tabitha couldn't help but recall how sincere her ex-fiancé and stepsister had appeared to her.
A chuckle escaped her lips because she desperately wanted to cry, but holding back the tears had led to a fit of laughter. Trying to reassure herself, she repeated, "I am fine. I am totally fine."
With that, Tabitha entered her car and noticed that her phone was on. Coincidentally, it was ringing.
Tabitha wondered if it was Sarafina, but it turned out to be her parents calling-her adopted parents.
Tabitha was about to answer the call out of reflex, but then she remembered everything that had transpired back in the living room with her ex-fiancé and stepsister. As a result, she chose not to pick up the call.
With another deep breath, Tabitha tightened her grip on the steering wheel and drove away from the area.
In truth, Tabitha didn't want to attend the party Sarafina had invited her to, and she also didn't want to stay at her house.
Tabitha realized that she had to find a place to spend the night. Going back home was out of the question. The thought of her 'family' being there and her pride made it impossible for her to return.
Since her friend was at a party, the only way Tabitha could stay with Sarafina was to attend the party.
Tabitha picked up her phone and dialed Sarafina's number.
"Hello!"
Sarafina answered the call, but it was too noisy at her end, making it difficult for Tabitha to hear her. Likewise, Sarafina couldn't hear Tabitha clearly.
In the end, Tabitha followed the address Sarafina had sent her three hours ago and found the club where her friend was. After locating the parking lot, Tabitha parked her car.
Tabitha got out of the car and looked around.
Even outside the club, the surroundings were noisy. She could only imagine how much noisier it would be inside the club. But Tabitha needed to get her mind off the harsh reality she had just faced.
It had been an overwhelming experience, and Tabitha was desperately seeking distraction. She entered the club, bumping into a few intoxicated people on her way.
Upon entering the club and seeing the crowd of people everywhere, Tabitha's shoulders slowly dropped, knowing that she would never find her friend in the midst of this chaos.
*********
It was supposed to be a meeting in the VIP section, but the business associate whom Silas was waiting for was running quite late.
Silas stood by the huge glass window in the VIP room, which provided a great view of the club below. He observed the people enjoying their evening.
Some were holding drinks as they danced with their partners, while others were engaged in conversations over a drink without joining the chaos. Some simply stood in areas away from the club's main crowd, enjoying their drinks, and a few used alcohol to drown their sorrows.
Silas kept his hands in his pockets as he observed the scene below.
Suddenly, an aroma filled Silas's nostrils.
'This smell...'
Initially, it had a fruity quality, reminiscent of peaches. It was a unique scent that conveyed a sense of ease and comfort.
"This smell..." Silas muttered aloud before he felt a warm sensation in his chest, followed by a faint, distant howl in his ears.
"This..."
Silas knew what it meant.
After twelve years of searching and waiting, he finally felt her presence. He finally felt her.
While his wolf was excited, and the warm sensation in his chest increased, Silas felt a sense of moodiness and pain.
"What's going on?" Silas wondered, his hand resting on his chest where he felt the unfamiliar emotions of pain and sadness.
Silas knew they weren't his feelings; they were coming from his mate, who he could now sense was feeling sad.
Silas turned to look at the people below from the VIP window.
"I can smell her. She must be here."
He scanned the area where people danced, but he couldn't find his mate like this.
Determined, Silas turned around and headed for the exit of the room. He needed to find his mate and know why she was sad.
'How beautiful.'
Silas hadn't even seen the woman the moon goddess had gifted him, but he could already feel the connection forming between them.
Silas's assistant followed him, but he couldn't be of much help. Silas didn't know his mate's name, and he couldn't describe her appearance since he had never seen her before.
Silas was eager to meet his mate because he had just found her after shifting twelve years ago. Despite the elders, particularly his family, advising him to get married to another she-wolf during these years of searching, he refused.
They had gone to great lengths, even setting up blind dates and arranging potential marriages for Silas, but their efforts had all been in vain. Eventually, they gave up.
'Why this heavy feeling of sadness, though?' Silas wondered.
He was keen to meet his mate not only out of excitement but also due to the deep sadness he felt in his heart. Silas wanted to know what had happened to his mate to cause such profound sadness.
Silas navigated the crowd, knowing that finding his mate wouldn't be too difficult now that he could feel her presence. The moment he laid his eyes on her, his wolf would recognize her.
"I feel so excited!" Silas's wolf, Kevin, exclaimed.
"Same here, Kevin. We should be excited, but please control your excitement. We're in public, so let's not draw unnecessary attention," Silas replied. His wolf had the ability to take control, especially when it was something significant, but they needed to maintain composure in a public setting. Silas definitely didn't want to expose his father's pack.
"I bet she's so beautiful! Her scent is getting stronger," Kevin continued to express his anticipation, while Silas concentrated on finding his mate.
"I wonder what her name is," Silas said to his wolf.
"Her name must be beautiful as well. Silas, I can't wait to meet our mate. I want to feel her even more!" The excitement was making Silas a bit unfocused because his wolf was distracting him.
"I feel like..." Silas stopped and inhaled deeply for a prolonged moment. "The scent is stronger and intoxicating. It's making me hungry and filling me at the same time. She must be close!"
Silas had done an excellent job navigating through the crowd. Now, he was close to the counter, searching for his mate.
As Silas approached the counter, the scent became even more potent.
His wolf was also agitating inside him, adding to Silas's excitement.
Silas scanned the area until he set his eyes on a lady who was drinking. A man sat beside her, attempting to touch her.
The moment Silas saw this, although he couldn't see the lady's face, just her back, something in him couldn't tolerate the scene.
Silas intervened, removing the man's hand from the lady's back.
The lady turned to her side to witness the scene.
Tabitha was already drinking, and when she felt someone else's presence, she looked up and met his gaze.
Meanwhile, Silas's heart began to race when he saw his mate for the first time, and she happened to be human.
