Nyx's POV
THE STARWEAVER PACK.
I stared at the six feet deep grave I had dug. I had spent hours digging it, but I didn't care. I was weak, but the thought of whom I was about to bury kept me strong. This was arguably the best I've felt ever since I was born. A smirk escaped my lips as I shifted my gaze to the dead body, lying still. I closed my eyes and let myself relish the images of how he died. The way several claws dug into his body until he was lifeless. The struggle and fight he put up to it was bliss to my battered soul.
"Are you done digging, omega?" A voice asked, jerking me off my thoughts. The shovel I had used almost fell off my hands. Thankfully, it didn't, as that would have attracted more punishments for me.
"Yes, Luna." I bowed immediately. Luna Cara was one of the people that made my life horrible.
Being born by a traitor to the pack and also being birthed as a twain under the cursed moon was enough to have me killed. My mother, an omega, was killed. My twin sister was said to have died with her. Several times, I also wish I suffered the same fate.
Luna Cara got closer to me. She patted me on the back. That was a sign that I had done well, but I felt rather nervous and fearful.
"How about we throw you down there with Tristan?" She asked, sounding very amused. Fear gripped my whole being. I started shivering. Luna Cara was taking walks around me, enjoying every bit of my misery. "It would not be so evil to let you die with the traitor, Tristan."
"Forgive me, Luna." I begged, falling on my knees.
Tristan had sold valuable pack information to a rival pack. Harrison, the alpha of the pack, found out and had Tristan beaten to death by the pack. I took no part in it, but I enjoyed every part of it, because Tristan made my life worse than a living hell.
"There's nothing to forgive." Luna Cara said, bending over to meet me halfway. She released a very wicked laugh and even clapped her hands.
"You should really stop feeding off her fear." Alpha Harrison's thick voice shook me a little bit. He was always in support of his mate and if she truly wants me buried alive, it'd happen.
"See now terrified she is." She said, standing up to hug the alpha. The rest of the pack were behind him. "Blame me not for enjoying it."
They locked lips and made disgustingly loud sounds.
"Well, the daughter of a traitor should also suffer the same fate as her mother." Alpha Harrison said. I cowered in fear, shivering intensely. They always make threats but I'd never get used to them.
"Please, alpha." I begged.
"Just so you know," Luna Cara started, resting her leg on my knees, "you are not a member of this pack. You're a fucking slave."
"Yes, Luna." I fought the tears trying hard to escape my eyes.
Luna Cara laughed in an evil manner. She was having a lot of fun.
"Okay bae, that's enough." Alpha Harrison said, pulling his mate to his side. She kept giggling.
"I'm not sure if I enjoyed killing Tristan." Luna Cara giggled, "I was thinking I could make peace with the tempest in me by killing this one."
I had nothing to do with Tristan's murder. I only watched and imagined myself being the one in charge. It was exhilarating and scary at the same time.
"We will get rid of her, but not yet." Alpha Harrison muttered. "I have other plans for her."
Alpha Harrison pulled me to my feet by my hair. My head ached for a few seconds and my scalp burnt, but it was nothing I wasn't used to already.
"Well then, let's get to the burial nonsense." Luna Cara spat, sounding disgusted. "Traitors don't deserve burials, or what do you think, Nyx?"
"They don't, Luna." I responded. A drop of tears escaped my eyes. I could not wait for all these to be over with. It was getting unbearable already.
"Good." She giggled again.
We went on with the funeral. Anytime a member of the pack is killed by someone in the pack, there are ritual processions that must be observed to avert evil.
As the funeral went on, more tears escaped my eyes but I hid them well. Anyone seeing me cry would mean more punishments for me. I could not get punished any longer. I had tried to kill myself over the years, but nothing ever worked. Neither poison nor knives. I always came out alive.
I wish I had just died alongside my twain. I was far useless than any slave ever in every pack I had come across. I could not shift, neither could my healing abilities kick in. The only good thing I had , that had proven otherwise bad over time, was my weird inability to die. I might have already taken too much poison, that I had already become immune.
The funeral was over in a jiffy and the rituals were done. The pack went back inside and I followed behind, hoping that no one would decide to torture me again.
"Nyx!" Luna Cara called in a very prolonged manner.
"She would be the death of me." I muttered to myself before rushing to her presence.
"Luna?" I responded, bowing my head.
"Get me a glass of water." She ordered. I ran into the kitchen and got her what she desired. I felt dizzy from the living room all the way into the kitchen. I could feel life and consciousness, slipping out of me. I just have to give her this cup and get far away from her before whatever wants to happen would happen.
As I got closer to her, I could hear her shouting, but her words were unclear. I could see her lips moving and her veins straining, but I surprisingly couldn't heat anything.
I had almost gotten to her when my consciousness gave up on me. I fell to the ground, with her glass of water still in my hands. The glass broke as I fell and the water spilled out. Rather than having people surround me, I felt a kick to my stomach.
Even in my unconscious state, I knew I was done for.
Nyx's POV
Starweaver pack.
I woke up in chains, with two hounds barking viciously at me. I was about to be eaten. At first, I did not understand what was going on. It took a while, but the recent events came back to me. I had fainted right before the Luna. I might have even spilt water on her cloth or her body. I had already done the worst thing any slave could do in the Starweaver pack; annoy the Luna. I was apparently good at doing that. She also had a liking for me; she loved my whimpers when she taunts and my ragged gasps when she's bickering.
I was breathing more rapidly than I ever have. I could already see the hounds tearing me into bits. At least, I would be done with all these tortures and pain. I closed my eyes to avoid seeing the hounds barking at me. They were tied to the ends of the cells and they were just an inch away from me. Any wrong move from me and I would be meat to hungry hounds.
The hounds are alpha Harrison's play things. He uses them to hunt slaves or omegas that try to escape the pack. He enjoys doing that a lot. He even allows them headstarts before giving chase. None of the slaves or omegas ever crossed the borders.
I heard footsteps and from the taps of the walk, I knew it was Zoe, my only friend in the Starweaver pack. We were both born in the pack and our mothers were betrayals. Luna Cara just hated me more than anyone else. I am the omega that's treated as a slave.
"Nyx." Zoe called, breathing shakily. The hounds turned to her and were biting at the cell doors.
"Zoe." I called. The tears that stayed in me so well, decided to burst out. I cried as carefully as I could. "How are you here?"
"Luna ordered me to clean the cells." Zoe said. I could barely hear her voice amidst the hounds barking.
"How are you?" She asked, cleaning her eyes also. She was as scared as I was. Her face said so.
"I'm going to die." I said, smiling amidst tears. I had been treated so horribly that death sounded great. Hounds tearing me apart has to mean death.
"I'm sorry." Zoe apologized, crying harder.
"No, don't! It's not your fault." I said, almost making a wrong move. The hounds jumped back at me.
"Nyx." Zoe cleaned her tears. "I will find you in the next world and we will be sisters and be free!"
"I hope we will." I muttered. "How long have I been out?"
"Almost a day." Zoe responded. That was a big problem. If the Luna wasn't going to let the hounds have me, I would receive as many lashes as minutes I've spent staying unconscious. This was the second time. I barely survived the first time. The first time was far away from her, this one was worse.
"What does she plan to do with me?" I asked, unsure if I wanted the answer.
"Alpha Harrison wants you to be taken to the wolves of Castmere, so they'll use you for rituals." Zoe said, breathing shakily. "He says you're too much bad luck."
"And the Luna?" I asked, knowing that the Luna always had her way.
"Luna Cara wants the hounds to have your meat."
It sounded like the same thing to me. The wolves of Castmere are worse than hounds. They are known for their gruesome rituals. The only difference between the two was that alpha Harrison would get something from selling me off.
"I guess I'm actually dying." I muttered, before bursting into tears.
Zoe cried for a while before resuming her duties. She could face a worse fate if the Luna came and the cells weren't sparkling neat. At least, as good as any cell could be.
Hours later after Zoe had left, two of the pack's warriors came into the cell. One of them, Zack, held the two hounds. He shushed them up and they listened to him. The other one, Yuri, got me out of the chains. He pulled me up and literally dragged me all the way to the pack's gate where the whole pack was. They all treated me the same way. Even the slaves treated me like their own slave. Life was horrible.
Yuri pushed me before Alpha Harrison and Luna Cara. I fell close to their legs. I forced myself to kneel.
"We all know why we're here today." Alpha Harrison said, walking round me. "I am banishing this omega and selling her off to the wolves of Castamere."
"At least, her peasant ass would be useful for something." Someone in the pack said. Everyone laughed. They enjoyed seeing me suffer. The thought of leaving this pack territory felt better than the thought of getting killed.
"And today, we are done with the one thing that has brought us so much bad luck." Alpha Harrison said. The pack cheered.
If anything held the pack down, it's definitely Alpha Harrison's shrewdness and his wife's stupidity. They thought themselves cunning when they've rather always been fools.
"Any words before you're sold?" Alpha Harrison asked me, pulling my face up to look at him from the ground, with his leg.
I wanted to speak the words I had kept in my whole life. I wanted to call them evil. I wanted to curse them and die. I wanted to die, doing one thing that would make me happy in death, but I couldn't. The words just wouldn't leave my lips. They stayed, stuck in me.
"I guess she's not just stupid, she's also dumb." Yuri said, making everyone laugh.
"Well..." Luna Cara said. Before I could turn to look at her, a kick had landed on my face. I spat blood all over the floor. I took a very deep draw of fresh breath. It felt like I was about to die. "That's the least I could do, since you're being sold."
"Well now, I, Harrison Thomas, alpha of the Starweaver pack, in front of the pack that serve as witnesses, formally banish you...." the alpha was speaking when the atmosphere suddenly changed. The fresh breeze got turbulent. The grounds might have even shaken a bit.
At first, I thought it was me. I thought I was about to rain hell on the people that made me live through it, when a man appeared from all the turbulence. He had a type of aura to himself. It was all new to me.
"Stop!" The man beside him shouted as they walked closer.
"You will banish no one!" This mysterious man said himself. His deep voice gave more of the aura. He stepped out of the light and his eyes fell on me. I was speechless.
"Alpha Caleb Syder!" Alpha Harrison called, giving a quick bow.
Nyx's POV
Starweaver Pack.
I was standing beside Alpha Harrison in the Consultation room. I was only ever there to clean the place up. I wasn't sure why I was standing there, at least not yet. The only thing was that this stranger had saved me from being sold to the wolves of Castamere. His unannounced arrival had people of the pack running helter skelter just to please him.
I did not know what the fuss was all about. The only thing I kept hearing from most of the wolves was that Caleb Syder was in our territory.
My eyes fell on Caleb Syder. He was seated in alpha Harrison's usual spot, which could only mean that alpha Harrison was far below him. He had a very huge frame. There were several tattoos running all over his body. His face was free of tattoos or several beastly marks on other parts of his body. His brown eyes complemented his brown hair greatly. He's a very handsome person. His face was expressionless, making it very impossible to read if he was going to save me or not.
It hit me that he might have only just delayed my sale, and done nothing more. I tried not to think too hard about it. If he turns out to be worse, I'd do something that'd force them to want me dead. I can't keep living like this. Not for one second more.
"Alpha Caleb Syder of the Moongaze pack!" Alpha Harrison called with a smug smile. "It's an honor to have you in this humble place."
"It's more than an honor." Luna Cara added quickly. She was kissing his ass, which affirmed what I could already sniff out. Caleb Syder is more influential and powerful. On the biggest level! Luna Cara had treated people above her horrible over the time. This one only meant he was way above.
"Cara, you are as ravishing as ever." Alpha Caleb said, smiling at Cara. Cara returned his smile with a devilish blush. "And it is also an honor to be here."
"How is the most beautiful Luna Caramel?" Alpha Harrison asked.
"She is alright. Keeping up with my indecency at least."
Zoe came in and served food round the table. Food has never been served in the Consultation room, but rules always change.
"I'm not here for food." Alpha Caleb said, rejecting the food. Zoe held back for a second and looked to alpha Harrison for what to do next. Zoe only packed up after he gave her the go ahead with a nod. Zoe packed the plates off everyone's tables and hurried outside.
"May I ask what you're here for then?" Alpha Harrison asked.
"I can't speak in front of so many people. I was hoping to have an audience with you alone." Alpha Caleb said.
"It is done!" Alpha Harrison clapped his hands and the room was cleared out, leaving only the alphas, the betas and Luna Cara. I was walking silently when his voice stopped me.
"Not you!" Alpha Caleb called, making me stop dead in my tracks. I slowly turned back to look at him. His eyes were on me. I bowed to avoid looking at me. "What is your name?"
"Alpha Caleb, I'd advise you not to be interested in someone so lowly." Luna Cara interrupted before I could speak. "Her lineage has a trait of betrayal and ..."
"Shhh..." Alpha Caleb shushed Luna Cara up. The look on Luna Cara's face was every bit precious. I would gladly die if that look was the last I'd see on her face. "What is your name, girl?"
"Nyx." I replied softly.
"A beautiful name for an omega." He replied. My heart might have skipped a few beats. No one has ever paid attention to my name but Zoe. It was said that my mother wrote the name on my body, with her blood, right before she died alongside my twain. It was another reason why the pack grew up hating me.
"Thank you, alpha." I responded, bowing slightly.
This might be good. I might finally have peace. He might not be as horrible as the Thomas's. I really hope he takes me away.
"What offence was about to get you banished?" Alpha Caleb asked, standing up and walking to meet me. Everyone else in the room stood alongside him. Such reverence!
"I.... I.... I..." I stuttered nervously. He was standing right in front of me, smelling far more expensive than any perfume I had ever smelled.
"Relax girl." Alpha Caleb said, touching my shoulder. I shivered a little at the feel of his touch. "Take a deep breath."
I did as he commanded. I drew a very deep breath, looking down. He held my jaw and tilted my face up till our eyes met.
"Now, speak. I won't hurt you."
"I... I...." I paused, taking another deep breath. "I spilled water on the Luna unintentionally and broke a glass."
I fell to my knees and bowed my head.
"I am truly sorry." I said, crying, hoping it would strike pity in him and force him to take me along with him.
"What?" He exclaimed, picking me from the floor. He turned to look at alpha Harrison and Luna Cara. "Tell me you seriously didn't just almost banish someone from your pack because of water!"
"Alpha Caleb, this is a misunderstanding. She is an experienced liar." Luna Cara said, walking close to where we were. "She tried to have me killed."
"Plus, she has brought a streak of bad luck to this pack!" Alpha Harrison added quickly, like they were scared of something.
"You forget that I'm not just an alpha. I can sense that you're lying." Alpha Caleb spat angrily. "You dare lie to me?"
"Never will I!" Alpha Harrison exclaimed. "If you will just have your seat and let me explain things to you."
"No." Alpha Caleb said. "I've never really cared about what packs do to their omegas or slaves."
"Why do you sound interested in this one?" Luna Cara asked, trying everything to get me six feet in the ground.
That was quite the twist. His words struck my heart deeply. I might have hoped on nothing.
"But this one intrigues me." Alpha Caleb said. It sounded like a good thing. If something or someone intrigues me, I would definitely keep them safe.
"Speak what you want and it's yours!" Alpha Harrison declared.
"The Moongaze pack and the Starweaver pack have kept faith for more years than we both have on our heads," Alpha Caleb started out, "draw up a contract and sign her to me. I'll in return give you whatever it is you want."
That sounded too unreal. I wasn't sure I had heard him right. He just gave his word , so he could have me. Why would anyone go through such lengths just for me?
I was too shocked to even utter words of appreciation.
"Why her, alpha Caleb? She's the most horrible of the most horrible." Luna Cara asked.
"As I said, she intrigues me." Alpha Caleb turned to one of the omegas at the door.
"Have her bathed and dressed well, she's coming with me!" He said.
Maybe, just maybe, I'm free already.
