Old Lady of the Apex Crown

Author: Xiao Ye
Genre: Romance
I was the financial backbone of the Rust Hounds MC, keeping my patched-member husband, French, and his scrap-metal club afloat with my private wealth. But I returned to the clubhouse one afternoon only to find him half-naked on the sofa with my half-sister, Hettie. Instead of apologizing, he sneered and demanded I accept her. "The club needs legacy. Hettie can actually give me an heir, unlike a cold mechanic." When I immediately cut off their funding, his entire family turned into rabid dogs. They tried to physically seize my family's titanium mining deeds and leaked a security video of me being carried out of a dive bar by a "nameless drifter" to frame me for infidelity. Even my own father showed up to the club's tribunal to strip my surname, demanding I sign over my assets before they broke my legs and banished me. I had bled for this club and this family for years, only to be thrown to the wolves so they could steal my inheritance. They really thought I was just a disposable Old Lady they could humiliate, break, and cast aside into the dirt without consequence. What on earth gave them the confidence to think I would just roll over and die? They didn't know that the "filthy nobody" who saved me that night was Camden Diaz, the Apex President of the Iron Kings, the most feared outlaw empire in North America. And his heavily armed enforcers had just blown the doors off their little tribunal.

Chapter 1

Carmel POV:

"Who told you to walk into my quarters without knocking?"

The roar of my Harley had barely faded from the gravel yard when French's voice hit me, sharp and thick with defensive rage.

I stood in the doorway of the private back room inside the Rust Hounds MC clubhouse.

The stale stench of cheap draft beer, burnt tobacco, and heavy motor oil hung in the air, overpowered by a sickly sweet cloud of vanilla perfume that did not belong here.

On the battered leather sofa, two bodies scrambled apart in frantic disarray.

French Atkinson, my patched-member husband, hastily yanked his three-piece leather Cut over his bare, sweat-sheened chest.

The faded scar across his left eyebrow twitched as his thick fingers fumbled with the metal snaps.

Beneath him, clutching a scrap of blanket to her bare collarbone, was my half-sister, Hettie Harrington.

Her hazel eyes flashed with momentary panic before settling into a soft, calculating gleam of triumph.

Her pale, manicured hand deliberately slid down, resting protectively over her flat stomach.

"Carmel..." Hettie whimpered, her voice dripping with artificial innocence. "Don't be mad at French. I... I was just so scared and lonely while you were out on that supply run. He was only comforting me."

My pulse hammered against my ribs, but my face remained carved from solid granite.

I didn't scream. I didn't throw things.

My thumbnail dug hard into the thick grease calluses on my palm, the sharp physical bite anchoring my focus.

"You're touching her belly like there's a crown jewel growing inside it," I said, my voice dead, low, and vibrating with disgust.

French hauled himself to his feet, buckling his heavy steel skull belt buckle.

He was six-foot-two of scarred muscle and unchecked arrogance, a senior rider in this territory who genuinely believed his leather vest granted him godhood.

"Watch your damn mouth, Carmel," French sneered, stepping closer until his sour whiskey breath washed over my face.

"Look at yourself. You walk in here reeking of motor oil, soot, and burnt transmission fluid. Your hands are covered in grease and steel burrs. You spend more time rebuilding carburetors and tuning engine blocks than warming my bed."

He gestured toward the sofa with a haughty wave of his hand.

"The club needs bloodline. The Rust Hounds need legacy. Hettie is soft, fertile, and actually knows how to treat a man. She can give me an heir. What the hell can a cold, barren mechanic give to this brotherhood?"

"I gave you the very ground you stand on," I said, my gaze locking onto his bloodshot eyes without blinking. "And you swore a Blood Oath in the Church chapel when you claimed me as your Old Lady. You broke sacred club law."

"I am a senior full-patch brother! I make the damn rules in this county!" he barked, stepping directly into my personal space.

He raised a heavy, callused hand toward my throat. "You're damn lucky I keep your name stitched on my colors. Your only job is to sign the checks, pay the club's bills, shut your mouth, and accept your sister into this bed."

He lunged forward, his thick fingers reaching for my leather jacket collar to force my chin up and assert dominance.

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back.

My right hand dropped with lightning precision to the heavy twelve-inch steel pipe wrench resting on the tool rack beside the doorframe.

In one seamless, explosive motion, I brought the solid iron bar swinging upward through the air.

A sickening, splintering CRACK echoed through the room as the iron bar shattered the small bones in French's right wrist.

"Fucking hell!" French howled, his voice turning into a ragged shriek.

He stumbled backward, crashing violently into the glass coffee table, scattering empty whiskey bottles across the floor as he clutched his limp, dangling wrist against his ribs.

Hettie shrieked in genuine terror, scrambling deep into the sofa cushions and yanking the blanket over her head like a cornered rat.

"Don't you ever put your filthy hands on me again," I said, letting the heavy wrench slip from my fingers to hit the floorboards with a dull, resonant clang.

French gritted his teeth, his face turning a mottled shade of bruised purple as sweat poured down his forehead from the blinding pain.

"You crazy bitch!" French spat through gritted teeth, gasping for breath. "You're a Harrington! You belong to the Rust Hounds! You walk out that door, you have nothing! You're nothing without my patch!"

I looked past him, my cold eyes fixing directly onto Hettie, whose trembling face peeked from behind the blanket.

"You think that belly of yours is your golden ticket, Hettie?" My voice cut through the room like a frozen scalpel.

"If your womb is so precious, let's see if it can digest cold wind and broken promises. Because from this exact second, not a single gallon of high-octane fuel, not a single keg of beer, and not a single titanium bolt will be funded by my private accounts."

I turned back to French, looking at him as if he were nothing more than roadkill on the asphalt.

"Every single dollar keeping the lights burning in this clubhouse came from my sweat and my mother's estate. Keep your scrap-metal club running on your own."

I turned my back on him and walked down the dimly lit hallway, ignoring his muffled curses and agonizing groans echoing behind me.

Out in the main bar, three prospects wiping down the sticky beer taps froze instantly, dropping their eyes to the wooden counter the moment the heavy thud of my steel-toed boots hit the floorboards.

"Park my Indian Scout in my private garage," I commanded the nearest prospect without breaking stride. "Nobody touches the security lock."

"Yes, ma'am," the prospect stammered, scrambling to grab the keys.

I stepped out into the crisp, biting autumn wind, crossing the gravel yard directly to the reinforced metal bay situated at the far edge of the compound.

I punched my private access code into the biometric keypad and hauled the heavy roll-up door upward.

Inside sat my true domain: rows of industrial precision drill presses, stacks of custom titanium alloy blueprints, racks of specialized machining rigs, and my encrypted workstation resting on the heavy steel workbench.

I yanked the chain, slamming the roll-up door shut with a deafening boom and throwing the heavy titanium deadbolts from the inside.

I pulled the dust cover off the terminal and booted the multi-screen system.

Lines of hidden financial ledgers, offshore trust accounts, and commercial credit routing codes flickered in cold green phosphor against the black displays.

The Atkinson family had been feeding off my marrow and bleeding my legacy dry for three long years.

It was time to starve them into absolute ruin.

Chapter 2

Carmel POV:

The blue glow of the multi-screen monitor reflected against the cold lenses of my safety glasses.

For forty straight minutes, the only sound inside the reinforced workshop was the rhythmic clicking of my keystrokes and the low hum of the overhead fluorescent tube.

French had skimmed nearly eighty-four thousand dollars over the past eight months alone, funneling club maintenance funds into private transfers for boutique rentals and designer jewelry in Reno.

Every single transaction was directly subsidized by my secondary corporate credit lines and my mother's estate trust.

I entered the final command string, severing the Rust Hounds MC's commercial operating account from my offshore trust with a single keystroke.

A thunderous banging rattled the heavy corrugated steel door before my finger had even lifted from the Enter key.

"Carmel! Open this goddamn door right this second!"

The shrill, grating voice belonged to Martha Atkinson, French's mother.

I shut the laptop screen, wiped a smear of black grease from the back of my hand with an oily rag, and unbolted the reinforced steel security latch.

I shoved the heavy door open and stood dead center in the frame, blocking the entryway.

Martha stood on the dusty gravel path in an expensive ivory silk blouse that looked absurd against the rusted scrap heaps and grease pools of the motorcycle yard.

Behind her loomed Agnes Tucker, her lifelong domestic lackey, clutching a thick leather-bound invoice folder to her chest like a weapon.

"French is at the county clinic getting a plaster cast fitted around his wrist because of your violent psychotic fit!" Martha hissed, her heavily penciled eyebrows pinching together in venomous rage.

"You are his Old Lady! You are supposed to swallow your damn pride, keep your mouth shut, and keep the peace in this family, not act like a rabid animal!"

"If you came here to whine about your son's shattered wrist, tell him he should get on his knees and thank god I didn't aim that wrench at his skull," I said evenly.

Agnes sneered and took a heavy step forward, thrusting a printed invoice slip directly into my face.

"The monthly commercial fuel distributor invoice and the regional brewery keg delivery are due by noon sharp," Agnes snapped arrogantly. "It's fifty-two thousand dollars. Authorize the wire transfer right now."

I plucked the paper from her fingers, glancing down at the itemized list, before looking back into Martha's cold, entitled eyes.

"Fifty-two thousand dollars?" I let out a low, humorless laugh that made Martha's jaw tighten.

"Let's see here: eighteen thousand for emergency high-octane fuel, and right beneath it... fourteen thousand dollars for Hettie's custom designer wardrobe in Reno, and twenty thousand dollars for Martha Atkinson's VIP anti-aging spa membership in Las Vegas."

I crumpled the invoice in my fist and tossed the paper ball into the dirt at Martha's designer heels.

"Is that what you call club operating expenses, Martha?"

Martha's painted face flushed purple, the veins bulging along her thin, wrinkled neck.

"Watch your insolent tone!" Martha shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at my nose.

"You married into the Atkinson family! Your assets and your mother's claims belong to this charter! Your first and only duty is to finance French's standing as a senior patch!"

"My duty as your family's personal ATM expired ten minutes ago," I said calmly.

I pulled my smartphone from my back pocket, tapped the screen, and placed the call on high-volume speakerphone.

"Chase Private Client, this is Senior Manager Miller," the crisp professional voice answered on the second ring.

"Miller, this is Carmel Harrington," I spoke clearly, ensuring every word resonated across the open yard.

"Authorize immediate revocation of all corporate credit cards, cancel all authorized secondary users, and freeze all merchant drawing rights tied to the Rust Hounds MC commercial portfolio."

"Understood, Ms. Harrington. Security authorization codes confirmed. All secondary cards and credit lines have been permanently terminated as of right now."

Ding. Ding. Ding.

Before Miller even hung up, a rapid series of sharp alert chimes erupted from the depths of Martha's designer leather purse.

Martha frantically yanked her phone out.

Her eyes bulged in pure horror as five consecutive text notifications flashed across her glowing screen:

Alert: Secondary Card ending in 4108 Suspended. Available Credit: $0.00.

Alert: Secondary Card ending in 9921 Suspended. Available Credit: $0.00.

Alert: Merchant Drawing Authority Terminated.

"You ungrateful bitch!" Agnes shrieked in desperation, lunging forward with her sharp acrylic nails aimed straight for my phone.

My left hand snapped up like a steel vise, catching Agnes by the wrist and twisting it hard.

Before she could scream, my right open palm cracked across her cheekbone in a vicious, echoing slap.

CRACK.

Agnes spun halfway around, stumbling off the concrete pad and crashing sideways into the dusty gravel with a sharp, pathetic yelp, clutching her rapidly swelling jaw.

"Take one more step onto my concrete floor," I told them, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper, "and I will start using the heavy iron tools."

Martha backed up three frantic steps, her chest heaving in genuine terror, her face completely drained of color.

"You're insane!" Martha choked out, her voice trembling with hysteria. "You can't survive out here in the desert without French's patch protecting you! The entire territory will spit on you! You will starve!"

I slammed the heavy steel door in her face and threw the titanium deadbolt with a resounding thud.

A soft rustle came from the deep shadows of the rear storage racks.

Tessa Miller, my only trusted mechanic and sharp-eyed spotter in this camp, stepped out into the light, holding a loaded twelve-gauge Remington shotgun.

"They're gathering by the pool tables in the main hall," Tessa murmured, handing me a steaming tin mug of black coffee.

"French's crew is panicking over the frozen cards. They're talking about bringing bolt cutters out here to seize the title deeds to your family's titanium mining claims."

I took a slow sip of the scalding, bitter coffee.

"They won't get through reinforced solid titanium doors before the county sheriff's silent alarms trigger," I said, setting the empty mug on the steel workbench. "But I'm not staying here to watch those parasites throw a temper tantrum."

"Where are you heading?" Tessa asked, her grip firm on the shotgun.

"Lone Peak Outpost," I replied, pulling my encrypted hard drive from the terminal and sliding it into the thermal inner lining of my unmarked black leather jacket.

"I have seventy-two hours of encrypted accounting to scrub, and I need a lawless dive where nobody from this county knows my face."

"I'll hold down the shop," Tessa racked the slide of the Remington with a crisp, lethal click. "Anyone steps across the yellow safety line, I ventilate their chest."

I strapped my blackened steel field knife into my combat boot, walked to the rear access bay, and rolled an unbadged, matte-black Indian Scout out into the narrow alley.

I kicked the starter.

The high-performance engine rumbled to life with a low, muted growl that barely disturbed the dust.

I throttled into the midnight desert, the freezing Nevada wind biting at my throat as the taillights of freedom disappeared into the dark.

Chapter 3

Carmel POV:

The Lone Peak Outpost sat forty miles deep in the desolate Nevada salt flats, an isolated haven constructed from cinder blocks and corrugated tin for long-haul outlaws.

After a two-hour midnight ride through the freezing alkali dust, I sat in the darkest booth at the back, nursing a glass of neat bourbon while my encrypted hard drive scrubbed data on the terminal.

The grease beneath my fingernails was cleaned, but the tactical tension coiled between my shoulder blades had not loosened for a second.

Across the smoke-choked room, near the brass-rail bar, a lone man sat on a stool with his back turned to the open floor.

He was massive, an absolute mountain of lethal muscle clad in an unmarked, battle-worn black leather vest.

The entire bar-hardened nomads, cartel couriers, and ruthless bounty hunters-gave him a wide, terrified berth of five empty tables.

He radiated the kind of suffocating, quiet malice that belonged solely to an apex predator at the very top of the underworld food chain.

I pulled my eyes away, raising my glass to take another slow sip of the amber liquid.

Within three minutes of swallowing the drink, a sudden, violent wave of chemical heat slammed into my lower gut like a freight train.

My heart spiked to a frantic, erratic rhythm, and my vision blurred around the edges, neon lights smearing into toxic streaks.

I bit down hard on my lower lip until the sharp, metallic tang of copper filled my mouth, using the agony to anchor my fading consciousness.

I had been dosed with a concentrated neuro-toxin; the nervous waitress who served the bourbon had lingered three seconds too long by the taps.

I pushed myself up from the booth, but my knees buckled instantly as the floor pitched violently beneath my boots.

"Hey there, pretty little stray... looks like your kickstand just snapped."

A greasy, bearded nomad stepped out from the shadows of the restroom hallway, his foul grin exposing rotted teeth as dirty hands reached for my leather jacket.

My vision spun, but pure muscle memory took over; my right hand dropped to my combat boot, my trembling fingers clawing desperately for the hilt of my tactical blade.

My motor control failed before the steel cleared leather; the nomad shoved me hard against the plywood wall, pinning my hips with a foul, beer-soaked sneer.

"Let's see what kind of meat you're hiding under that tough hide-"

A massive hand clad in thick black leather and reinforced steel knuckles clamped around the nomad's throat from behind like a hydraulic vice.

With a sickening, wet CRUNCH of crushed cartilage and vertebrae, the giant from the bar hoisted the two-hundred-pound nomad entirely off the floor with a single arm.

Without a word, he slammed the thrashing man skull-first into the solid cinder-block wall.

The drifter went dead limp instantly, dropping to the blood-slick floorboards like a sack of wet sand.

The chemical fever burned through my veins, my vision turning completely black as I slid down the wall, but two massive, granite-solid arms caught me before I hit the dirt.

The giant hauled me against his broad chest, his scent washing over me-rich leather, clean mountain cedar, cold steel, and fresh gunpowder.

In the flickering yellow glow of the hallway bulb, his ice-blue eyes locked onto mine, framed by dark stubble and a pale, jagged bullet scar tracking down his throat.

"Keep your feet, sweetheart," his deep, gravelly baritone rumbled, vibrating straight through my ribs.

"Help me..." The words tore from my throat against my will, my fingers bunching into the thick leather of his vest as my body burned alive. "Dosed... back room... lock the deadbolt..."

His heavy gaze dropped to my right hand, noticing that even while trembling violently from the poison, my fingers were still locked in a lethal combat grip around my boot knife.

A dark, appreciative smirk curled the corner of his scarred lips.

"Dosed with street poison and you're still clawing for cold steel?" His voice was a dangerous, velvet growl. "Little wildcat, you've got more iron in your blood than half the men I've buried in this desert."

He didn't wait for an answer; in one fluid motion, he kicked open the reinforced timber door of the adjoining cabin and shoved it shut with the heavy heel of his combat boot.

He dropped me onto the mattress, following me down instantly to pin my thrashing, burning wrists firmly against the pillows above my head.

"Look at me," he commanded, his overwhelming physical dominance anchoring my shattered reality.

His touch was rough, calloused, and utterly uncompromising, but every point of contact sent shockwaves of electric relief through my starved, burning nerves.

The drug tore away my last rational defenses, leaving only a feral, consuming hunger for the lethal coldness of his skin.

I arched into his grip, dragging his scarred jaw down to my lips as the desert storm swallowed us whole.

Dawn sunlight cut through the broken wooden blinds like razor blades, burning against my swollen eyes.

Every single muscle in my core ached with a heavy, bruised soreness that proved last night was no drug-induced hallucination.

I bolted upright, clutching the rough woolen sheet against my bare chest, my breathing ragged.

The man stood silhouetted against the morning light by the window, completely shirtless, a glowing cigarette resting between his scarred knuckles.

Across his broad, battle-scarred back, inked in hyper-detailed black and gray, was a massive, crowned Grim Reaper wielding an M16 scythe-the supreme, untouchable crest of the Iron Kings MC.

Across the massive width of his shoulders, a single word was branded deep into his flesh in bold Gothic letters: PRESIDENT.

My breath seized in my throat as absolute shock paralyzed my limbs.

Camden Diaz. Apex. The supreme, bloodstained emperor of the most terrifying outlaw empire in North America.

Camden turned slowly, exhaling a thin, steady plume of gray smoke into the sunlight, his piercing blue gaze raking over my bare skin without a trace of hesitation.

He walked over to the edge of the mattress, reached into the pocket of his heavy jeans, and tossed a heavy, matte-black steel dog tag onto the sheets beside my knee.

Stamped into the blackened steel was a series of encrypted radio frequencies and the crowned Reaper skull.

It was the Apex Sovereign Pass-a sacred token of absolute military protection recognized across all forty-eight continental states.

Camden leaned down, his rough, calloused thumb clamping firmly onto the center of my chin, forcing my gaze up to meet his icy, lethal eyes.

"I don't care what kind of petty trash you're running from in this valley," Camden said, his voice absolute law.

"You survived my bed, you fought the venom like a warrior, and you carry my scent. From this sunrise on, you belong under my colors. Anyone in this territory lays a finger on you, I wipe their entire bloodline off the map."
