"Well, What do you think?" Hina looks at her older sister, Lisa. As if waiting for her seal of approval to be stamped on her fiancé.
"Derek seems practically perfect, Hina. Congratulations."
"Practically perfect? No! He is perfect." Hina and Lisa's Mom, Evelyn speaks up. Her eyes follows Derek as He slips out of the restaurant. "I was a bit skeptical at first since He's a little older, but with that Job and salary, not to mention how handsome he is. I think you made a good choice, Hina."
Hina looks happy with the approval of their mother as she flaunts Derek more. "And did i mention that he loves to cook and clean too?"
"Like I said, perfect." Evelyn turns to Lisa and sighs. "If only you could find a man like Derek, Lisa."
'Ugh, I wish they would stop nagging me about this.'
"It must be difficult to see your little sister make it to the altar before you."
"Of course not! I'm only happy for you Hina. Now, have you picked out your dress yet?" Lisa tries to redirect them. But it seems luck is not on her side as her mother gets back on the topic.
"How can it not bother you? It bothers me, You should be married by now. Or atleast dating someone."
"Did you try any of those apps I sent you?"
Lisa groans, 'why can't they leave me alone.'
"You know, John from the neighborhood broke things off with Mei. Do you want me to try set something up for you?!" Lisa tries to remember the John her mother was talking about and immediately shook her head. 'John?! He was always such a jerk when we were kids."
"Maybe I should ask Derek If he can knows someone to fix you up with. Of course most of his friends are happily married by now, but I will ask." Evelyn beams at youngest daughter. "That's so thoughtful of you, Hina. You have always been so good at looking after your older sister." Hina smiles.
"In most families, It's the other way around. But I don't mind, I will ask Derek tonight."
"No need. I'm seeing someone." She blurt out the words and instantly regretted it.
'ugh, why did I say that?' Their eyes widened at her statement. "W-what did you say?"
"Um, You know--We have only been seeing each other for a couple of weeks."
"That's wonderful Lisa! Why didn't you tell us? Forget it. You better hold onto him. At your age, It's only going to get harder to find someone."
"Hina's right. Anyone at this point is a catch. When will we get to meet him?"
"Um-I-uh-"
Suddenly, Hina clasps her hands and grins. "You must invite him to the wedding."
'Oh no--What did I get myself into?!'
Evelyn places her hand on Lisa's, smiling.
"Lisa, I'm so glad you will have a date for Hina's Big Day. I was so worried You'd go alone." Realizing she can't get out of this, She gulps. "Uh, I'll ask him if he can come." 'First I need to find a boyfriend ASAP.'
"Alright Girls, Let's go. We are done here."
"Mom, Hina and you can go ahead. I'll be at my apartment."
"Alright, Take care." Evelyn rose and kissed Lisa's cheeks before walking out of the restaurant with Hina.
'There are loads of dating apps but with only a month until the wedding.' She shakes her head. 'Maybe If I can hit it off with a guy, I can explain the situation. 'But what If I don't find anyone? What If I go on twenty dates and they're all terrible? 'That's my track record so far.' She shoves her phone into her purse, feeling frustrated. 'Why can't I just focus on my career? What's so wrong with that? If only I could rent a man for a month.' It's not like I'm looking for true love.' She leans her head back against the seat and looks up, letting out a heavy sigh. An advertisement on the TV catches her eye. 'HIRE LOVE.'
"We will match you with the finest of men for every situation." Her eyes lit up "A rental boyfriend service. That's perfect! I should make an appointment right away."
She brings out her phone from her purse, to punch in the number on the screen.
She stood up and made her way out of the restaurant to go to the address of the Rental services after making an appointment on her phone. Lisa gets to the Receptionist area and walks up to the lady she saw. "Hello, I have an appointment with Her boyfriend specialist."
"Welcome ma'am, You can go inside. The office by your left at the hallway."
"Thank You." She makes her way to the office and knocks on the door before opening it.
"Hello, I'm Lisa." A middle-aged woman looks up from her keyboard and smiles at Lisa.
"Welcome, Lisa. Please have your seat."
"Are you here for companionship or due to a special circumstance?"
"I guess a special circumstance, My little sister's getting married in a month and-"
"And you want to make sure you have a date." Lisa breathed a sigh of relief.
"Exactly."
"Don't worry, We have plenty of time and options. And you certainly aren't the first woman who's come in here looking for a date to a wedding."
"Well, I also kind of told my family that I have been dating someone already. Maybe I can rent someone a few times over the month so we can really make it real."
"Ah, I see. You may want to consider a full-time package then. But first, Let's see who's available." She swipes a few times then hands her the tablet. "Here are a few top candidate profiles."
'Hmmm, The man in the first picture looks familiar and it says He is a successful executive. A businessman this handsome could really impress my family and get them off my back, for once.'
"I will go with him." She points at the photo of the executive before handing the tablet back to her.
"There's no need to rush, We have many options." She shook her head.
"He's attractive and successful, and apparently we are compatible enough that He popped up, right?" The middle-aged woman nods, smiling.
"I love it when our clients are so decisive. We'll contact Andrew Collins as soon as possible." 'Andrew Collins--That name sounds familiar as well.' Lisa thought inwardly.
"We just need to go over some terms and conditions for our services." As she talks, Lisa's mind wanders. 'This could actually work! We can go on a few dates to get to know each other well enough to pull this off.'
"Of course, Many of our boyfriends have reasons of their own for offering these services. If you are interested in knowing more, You can look at Andrew's full profile. His reasons might be stated in his bio." Lisa shakes her head.
"No Thanks. I'm good."
"Are you sure you don't want to know more before you decide?"
"Nope! Just tell me how much I owe and what happens next." She chuckles.
"No problem. After we contact Andrew, He will get in touch with you. Then you two can take it from there."
"Perfect."
"Oh, before I put the finishing touches on this, one last question." Lisa's barely listening as She imagines a handsome man on her arm at the wedding. 'It will be so nice not to be bothered about why I don't have a date.'
"Would you like to opt for our Insurance? We will provide you with a replacement if the first one doesn't work out or becomes unavailable." Lisa, still lost in her daydream looks dazed.
"Lisa? Do you want insurance?"
"Uh, Yeah, sure."
"Alright then. We are done with everything, Miss Lisa." Lisa thanks the woman before standing up and going out of the building.
"Now, It's all sorted out. I can sleep peacefully without any worries." She said before stopping a cab that will take her to her apartment.
LISA'S APARTMENT;
The next Morning, Lisa, still sleeping in bed, woke up startled with a 'bang' on her door.
"Ugh, Who is out there disturbing my beauty sleep?" She got out of bed before going to get the door and swing it open.
To her surprise, A good looking young man stands before her. The man had strong and cold features, and every part of his face was inexplicable perfection.
At a height of at least 1.86 meters, His stature and body proportion were better than that of a runway model. He was wearing a tailormade, fitting suit, with a titanium cufflink that glistened splendidly.
His beautiful purple eyes stare down at her coolly, with no emotions in them. Lisa stood transfixed staring at him with mouths agape. "I'm here to pick you up. You have ten minutes to get ready before we leave."
Lisa keeps staring at his face for a moment wondering why He is at her doorstep until She remembers all about her hired boyfriend.
"I–um–You are Andrew Collins?"
"I'm aware. And you are Lisa."
'Oh my god, That's Andrew Collins! He's one of the youngest billionaire bachelors in the country. Now I know why He looked so familiar. 'But wait, he can't possibly be my boyfriend, right?'.
"Hire Love gave me the right contact information, didn't they?" Lisa came back to her senses when she figured out the impatience laced in his statement.
"Uh, Yeah." He looks her up and down, raising his eyebrow, then mutters under his breath. "You need a rental boyfriend, Interesting."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I was expecting you to be more-or rather less-never mind." He taps his expensive watch and smirks. "Now you have nine minutes, thirty seconds. I'd get moving If I were you. I'll be waiting outside." Without another word or a backward glance, He walks down the hallway. Lisa closed the door and rushed to the bathroom to quickly freshen up. She opens her closet and chooses a simple outfit. A flowered knee length gown. She quickly touches her face with light makeup and packs her black long hair into a ponytail. 'Andrew Collins is my rental boyfriend! 'But why on earth would someone like him be signed up for something like this?! He's rich, handsome, and would have any woman he wants. 'It just doesn't make sense. When She walks out of her building, Andrew's leaning against his car with his hands in his pockets. 'That car costs more than three years of my rent.'
"You made it in the nick of time. Good for you, Lisa." The driver opens the back door and gestures for her to get in.
"Wait, I just want to make sure we're clear about what's happening."
"You chose my profile, didn't you?"
"Yes, I need to get my family off my back for my sister's wedding and -"
"And you need a date that will make a splash. The wedding is in one month, as I understand."
"Yes, I guess that was all in my profile. But I have to warn you, My family isn't easy to impress." He scoffs.
"I'm sure I will manage. Now, please get in. We have much to discuss, and I'm on a tight schedule." She got in and Andrew followed suit and shut the door behind him. He turns to Lisa, his face stoic. "Let me set the rules now so there's no confusion later." His tone gives no room for argument and Lisa nods.
"In this situation, It won't hurt to know where we both stand."
"This is a business transaction between two consenting adults, nothing more. Under no circumstances should we confuse our public performances with real romance."
"Agreed."
"Good. I will do my part to fulfill the contract, but in exchange, I expect the same from you." 'Wait a minute I'm the client, not him.'
"You will always do your best through the duration of the contract to ensure you are worthy of me. I have an image to uphold, and I can't let you tarnish it." We will work on your wardrobe later, but for now, be on your best behavior at all times. I'm just thankful you are more attractive than your profile picture." His words are clipped and sure, his voice betraying no emotion.
'That was a compliment, but I didn't expect him to be so cold or domineering.' Lisa complained inwardly.
She reminds herself that she is the one who hired him and clears her throat.
"I think I can agree to that but I have some rules of my own too." Andrew cocks an eyebrow, waiting for her to continue.
"First, You too will try your best at all times to ensure you are worthy of me." Andrew scoffs and rolls his eyes. 'He might be rude, but snapping at him won't help. So for now, I will let it go. Best to soldier on and let him know I mean business.
"This is supposed to be mutually beneficial and therefore built on mutual respect. I have been on a lot of dates that didn't work out. Most of those men were rude to me, sometimes publicly which is why I'm still single." You don't need to be overly affectionate, but you cannot treat me like some employee."
Andrew's eyebrow drops as a corner of his mouth lifts, almost like He's amused.
"I will remind you that I am the client, and even If I was the one who hired you. I won't treat you like some underling."
He stays quiet for a while, making her slightly nervous. "Very well." He holds out his hand stiffly for a handshake.
'He's like a robot! All business and no soul.
'Can we really pull this off? Lisa stares down at his offered hand before meeting his eyes. Instead of shaking his hands, She asked him a question. "Have you ever even had a girlfriend? Like a real one?"
There's a glint of emotion in his eyes before he looks down. "It has been some time, but Yes." He pulls his gaze back to her, the glint replaced with steel, and He drops his hand. "What does that matter?"
'It matters because I don't know If anyone will buy that he has affection for anyone. Let alone me, my mother and sister might see right through him.' That would be even more embarrassing than showing up alone.'
"You don't think I'm competent enough to be your 'pretend' boyfriend?" 'oh–oh, how the hell did he know what I was thinking.'
He stares down with a competitive glint in his eye. "Want me to prove it?" Just then an idea of what he wants to do pops into Lisa's head causing her face to heat up.
'If we are going to do this, It has to be done right. 'making him jump through hoops might make things awkward. 'Surely If He can make multi-million dollar mergers, He can fake being a real boyfriend for a few hours.'
"It doesn't matter, I guess. But You better be up to the task."
"I am, I assure you." She held out her hands and He shook it firmly. "We have a deal then." He immediately releases her hand and turns away from her, staring out the window.
'Does he think there's nothing more to discuss? As annoyed as He is, She can't help admiring how attractive He is. 'Those purple eyes, strong jawline, his flawless skin, He's even more handsome in person.
'He might be stiff, but He will definitely turn heads at the wedding or will until he opens his mouth. He's so icy, maybe I should work on thawing him out a bit more.'If my family's going to believe we are a couple, we will have to know some personal details about each other.' should I try to break the ice?' She clears her throat and speaks. "Now that we have an agreement, We should probably get to know each other." He sighs, half-turning from the window. "I suppose you are right. What do you want to know?"
"Why don't we take turns asking each other questions?"
"Fine." He shifts in his seat, smoothing his trousers and adjusting his cufflinks.
"What is your profession?" Lisa cringes at that. 'It's all business, all the time with him!'
"I have a caveat-no questions about careers. We can literally look that up online. If we are going to be a pretend couple, We should show some real facts, the kind an internet search won't reveal."
Andrew drums his fingers on his thigh. "Lisa, My whole life is all about my career."
"Ok...If that's the case, then I have my question. If you could walk away from it all, What would you do instead?"
"I thought professional questions weren't allowed." Lisa rolls her eyes.
"This is hypothetical." Andrew narrows his eyes at her. 'She's not sure If He is thinking about his answer, or just staring her down. Even now, He's breathtakingly handsome. "Well?"
"This is a waste of my time."
"Fine, I will answer first. I would be a chef. I love food, but I'm a terrible cook. If I had to do it all over again and choose a different path, I would go to culinary school." Your turn. He turns toward the window again to look up at the sky. "When I was a child, I often daydreamed about being a pilot."
"A pilot! I love it. Why did you want to be a pilot?"
"I don't know. It looked fun, I guess." She waits for him to continue but He stops. 'It's like pulling teeth.'
"What looked fun about it?"
"To be among the clouds, free from the problems on the ground, like a bird. I don't know. It was a stupid, child's dream. That's all. As I grew up, I knew It was a fantasy and nothing more."
"Why? There are plenty of pilots in the world. I bet lots dreamed about it as kids."
The car hits a pothole, and his arm shoots out in front of her, keeping her steady. He grips her knee as He leans forward, barking at the driver to watch out. Lisa looks down at his hand and feels her cheeks getting warm. 'Andrew is so strong and sexy. And-Get it together, Lisa! Remember this is all business and nothing more!
"Apologies. Usually He is more careful."
"Huh? Oh, No problem. It happens." Realizing his hand is still on her leg, He snatches it back into his lap and looks out the window.
"Good. We are here."
"Where?" The car slows down in front of a massive building and then pulls into the parking garage. "Where are we?"
Andrew continued ignoring her as they got out of the car. He gestures for her to follow him. She slammed the door shut behind her and spoke up. "I'm not taking another step until you tell me where I am." He pauses, heaving a sigh. "It's my penthouse. You certainly ask a lot of questions." He strides forward, and She follows. "Most people do when they are taken to a mysterious unknown location."
"Now I understand why you have to hire a boyfriend." Lisa raised her chin defiantly.
"What did I say about being rude?" He shrugged. "Well, I just don't feel the need to answer every little, mundane question." He weaves a key card, and a set of elevator doors opens beside him. "But I will work on my manners since it's part of our agreement." He half bows, waving Lisa ahead of him. "After you, Lisa."
"Thanks. Is this a private elevator?"
"Yes, It only goes from the garage to my penthouse."
"What are we doing here?" Andrew groans at yet another question of hers. "Do your questions ever stop?"
"No, not really." He sighs, as the elevator door opens. She follows him into the glamorous penthouse and glances around, Her jaw hanging open in awe.
"You look like a fish with your mouth like that. Not very ladylike, is it?" He smirks.
'Hmph, I will let that one slide for now. She snaps her jaw shut, but Her eyes are wide, taking in every inch of luxury.
