Introduction

I was Ava, a revered River Guardian, brimming with vibrant life.

I found Marcus, a broken Stone Breaker, and poured my essence into saving him.

I healed his wounds and shared my lineage's lore, empowering him to become the Apex he yearned to be.

He swore eternal love.

But my selfless devotion was repaid with chilling betrayal by his new partner, Chloe.

They conspired, stripping me of influence and then, brutally, my life.

I didn' t vanish; I died, murdered by their ambition.

My Heart Spring dissolved, merging with my infant son Liam' s life current to save him.

For ten agonizing years, I remained a helpless spirit, haunting my preserved body and watching Liam suffer.

Gaunt and scarred, he bore Marcus's cruelty.

Now Marcus, the cruel Apex, returned, demanding my Heart Spring for Chloe' s child.

He taunted Liam, then bound him to a pyre, lighting the Breaker' s Fire.

He aimed to force me, a spectral memory, to reveal myself or watch our son burn.

How could the man I empowered, the father of our son, be capable of such chilling depravity?

He sought to burn away the last vestige of my existence.

But as unnatural flames licked Liam' s feet, a transformation began.

His muted life current exploded into a radiant emerald glow.

The true power of the Grove Heart I passed to him shimmered.

Liam, no longer a wilting fern, but a powerful sapling, rose from the pyre unharmed.

He stood ready to unveil all hidden truths and challenge the Apex who thought he had triumphed.

Chapter 1

Ten years.

Ten years since they said I vanished.

I did not vanish. I died.

Now, Marcus stood at the edge of my family' s land. The River Guardians' homestead was almost a ruin.

He was Apex of the Stone Breakers now. Powerful. Arrogant.

My spirit watched him. I was tied to my son, Liam. I could not leave.

Marcus was not alone. His new wife, Chloe, was with him, and his enforcers.

Chloe looked pale. She leaned on Marcus. She was pregnant.

"Is this the place?" Marcus' s voice was hard, like stones grinding.

"Yes, my Apex," one of his men said. "The old River Guardian homestead."

Marcus sneered. "Pathetic. Ava' s line always was."

My line was revered. Our Life Current was strong, a true river. His Stone Breakers were like harsh rock, always trying to break, to dominate.

He came for one thing: my Heart Spring.

The crystallized core of my Life Current.

Chloe needed it. Her own "Willow Whisper" current was too weak for the child she carried. A "true Stone Breaker" child, they called it.

My sacrifice for Marcus, my love for him, meant nothing now. He had taken my family' s influence, my support, and then my life. All for his ambition.

Liam appeared. He was thin, his face gaunt. He stood before Marcus.

"What do you want?" Liam' s voice was low, but it did not tremble.

Marcus looked down at him. Liam was a "wilted fern" to Marcus, not a Stone Breaker "sapling."

"Where is your mother?" Marcus demanded. "And her Heart Spring? I need it."

My spirit ached. He spoke of me as if I were a possession.

Liam' s eyes were old. "My mother is dead."

Chapter 2

Marcus laughed. A harsh, ugly sound.

"Dead? Ava? She wouldn' t die so easily. She' s hiding. Out of spite."

He looked Liam up and down. Disgust filled Marcus' s face.

"Look at you. Still a weakling. A drain."

My spirit drifted closer to Liam. I wanted to shield him, but I was only air, a memory.

Marcus pointed to the deep, jagged scar on Liam' s cheek.

"I gave you that. A reminder of your uselessness. You were a disappointment from birth."

He had struck Liam as a baby. A fit of rage. Because Liam' s Life Current was "muted."

I remembered that day. The pain. The betrayal.

"Tell her to come out," Marcus ordered Liam. "Or I' ll tear this hovel apart. And you with it."

Liam stood firm. "She is dead. I buried her."

Marcus' s eyes narrowed. He did not believe it. He could not conceive of a world where Ava chose death over him, or was simply gone beyond his reach.

"Show me," Marcus commanded.

Ava' s spirit felt a cold dread. Marcus was a storm, and Liam was a small tree in his path.

Chloe watched from a distance, a small, satisfied smile on her lips. She looked like a gentle willow, but her roots were poison. She had orchestrated my ruin. She wanted my Heart Spring to secure her place, her child' s place.

Marcus believed Chloe would give him a powerful heir. He was a fool, blinded by ambition and her whispers.

My only comfort was Liam. He remembered me. He loved me.
