Not Just His Old Lady

Author: Finley Steele
Genre: Romance
I was the respected Old Lady of the Iron Legion MC, managing all their legitimate businesses from the shadows for six years. But when my President boyfriend, Jasper, returned from a deadly run, he brought a woman on the back of his bike-my seat. "She's under the club's permanent protection now," he declared in front of everyone, elevating the widow to a status right beside mine. He created two queens for one throne. When her son knocked a pot of boiling chili onto my arm, leaving me with agonizing second-degree burns, Jasper rushed to comfort the uninjured, crying boy instead. His grandmother even scolded me in front of the whole club. "It was an accident! No need to make such a fuss." Later that night, Jasper confessed he owed Brandy his life and sanity, choosing his trauma bond with her over my years of quiet devotion. I finally understood that in his ledger of debts and duties, my sacrifices didn't even register. I couldn't compete with a ghost, nor the woman who walked through hell with him. So, I dropped my claim necklace on the floor and handed the club's account keys to the usurper. What they didn't know was that the club's businesses were completely bankrupt, secretly kept afloat for years solely by my family's trust fund. I cut the financial tow line, leaving them a ticking bomb, and walked away to watch his kingdom burn.

Chapter 1

Chloe POV:

The deep, guttural roar of a dozen Harleys echoes through the valley, a familiar symphony that signals the return of the Iron Legion. My heart gives a familiar leap. Jasper is back.

I stand on the wide porch of the clubhouse, smoothing down the fabric of my simple sundress, a nervous energy thrumming through me. The other members milling in the yard, mostly Prospects and some patched members doing menial tasks, start to whoop and cheer.

The pack, led by Jasper's signature black Dyna, thunders into the compound. He's at the front, his leather Cut bearing the President patch looking worn and dusty from the long ride. My man.

But my welcoming smile freezes on my face.

There's someone on the back of his bike. A woman, her cheap blonde hair whipping in the wind, her arms wrapped tightly around his waist.

That's my seat.

A knot of ice forms in my stomach, cold and sharp. The cheers around me falter as other members notice. Whispers start to ripple through the crowd like a foul wind, and I feel dozens of pairs of eyes shift from the incoming riders to me.

Jasper kills the engine and dismounts. Instead of walking to me, his Old Lady, he turns and helps the strange woman off his bike. He does it with a gentleness I haven't seen from him in months, his hands steady on her waist as he lifts her down.

She looks fragile, her large blue eyes wide and scared. Behind them, a chase car pulls up, and two small children, a boy and a girl, peer out from the back window.

Jasper finally looks at me, his handsome face grim, his jaw tight. There's no warmth in his gaze, only a hard, unyielding resolve. "Chloe," he says, his voice flat. It's not a greeting. It's a warning.

The woman, Brandy, shrinks behind him, clutching his arm. "Hawk, maybe this isn't a good idea..." she whispers, her voice trembling just enough to be heard by those closest. A perfect performance.

"It's done," Jasper cuts her off, his eyes still locked on me. He doesn't need to explain. The public display is the explanation. It's a declaration.

His sister, Alyson Weeks, saunters over, a malicious smirk playing on her lips. She's the club's self-proclaimed princess, spoiled and venomous. "Well, well, look what the cat dragged in. Looks like the family is expanding, Chloe."

I ignore Alyson, my entire being focused on the man whose name is tattooed over my heart, as he stands with another woman's arms linked through his.

The crowd of bikers parts as Jasper leads Brandy and her two children towards the main entrance of the clubhouse, right towards me.

He stops a few feet away. The smell of road dust, gasoline, and his familiar leather scent mixes with her cheap floral perfume. It's nauseating. My stomach churns.

"This is Brandy Cannon," he announces to everyone, though his eyes are only on me. "Her husband, Rick, died on the run. He saved my life."

The mention of a fallen brother sends a somber murmur through the club members. Duty. Loyalty. I know the code. I've lived by it for six years.

"She and her kids, Cody and Hailey, are under the club's protection now," Jasper continues, his voice leaving no room for argument.

My breath catches in my throat. Protection is one thing. This public spectacle, bringing her back on his bike, is another. It's a deliberate slight. A public stripping of my status.

I feel the weight of every stare, watching, waiting for my reaction. As the President's Old Lady, my reaction sets the tone for the entire club. They are waiting to see if I will accept this humiliation.

I lift my chin, forcing a mask of cool composure onto my face, even as my heart feels like it's being shredded by gravel. "The club always takes care of its own," I say, my voice steady and clear.

Jasper gives a curt nod, a flicker of something-maybe relief, maybe disappointment-in his eyes before it's gone.

Brandy looks at me, a mixture of guilt and something else, something calculating, in her gaze. "Thank you," she murmurs. "We won't be any trouble."

The boy, Cody, about eight years old, peeks out from behind her legs, staring at me with wide, curious eyes.

Jasper's mother, Marian, a woman who has always been kind to me, approaches with a worried expression, but Jasper steers Brandy away before she can speak to me.

He guides Brandy and the children past me, into the heart of the clubhouse, into the heart of my home.

He doesn't touch me. He doesn't even glance back.

The heavy oak door of the clubhouse swings shut behind them, leaving me standing alone on the porch. The cheers are long dead.

I feel my composure cracking, a single, hot tear threatening to fall. I quickly brush it away before anyone can see the weakness.

Talia, my closest friend in the club and the head bartender, comes to my side, her expression furious. "What the hell was that, Chloe?"

I can't answer. I just stare at the closed door, the place where he disappeared with her. He didn't just bring back a widow. He brought back my replacement.

Chapter 2

Chloe POV:

I'm in our room-what used to be our room-when the door opens. The scent of him, leather and whiskey, fills the space before he even steps inside.

I don't turn from the window where I'm staring out at the darkening training yard. I hear him sigh, the sound heavy with exhaustion and impatience.

"Chloe, we need to talk," Jasper says. His voice is the one he uses as Prez, the one that commands obedience from his men.

I finally turn, my arms crossed over my chest, a shield against him. "Talk? Or are you here to issue a decree?" My voice is ice.

He flinches, just slightly, and his jaw tightens. "Don't be like this. You know the code. Rick was a brother. He died for me."

"And I am your Old Lady," I retort, my voice shaking with a fury I can barely contain. "Or was that title just for when the sun is shining and no widows need a ride on the back of your bike?"

"This isn't about you and me!" he explodes, taking a step forward. "This is about my duty! The club's duty!"

"Your duty was to your brother. My place is on the back of that bike. You gave it to her. In front of everyone," I say, each word a carefully aimed dart. "You humiliated me, Jasper."

He runs a hand through his hair, a gesture of pure frustration. "It was the only way to show the club she has my full protection. That she's untouchable."

"So you made me touchable instead," I whisper.

He looks away, unable to meet my eyes. In that moment, I know. This wasn't a thoughtless act. It was a calculated choice. He chose his guilt over my honor.

"She and the kids will be staying in the guest quarters for now," he says, changing the subject. "I need you to... make her feel welcome."

A bitter, humorless laugh escapes my lips. "Make her welcome? You want me to welcome the woman you've practically installed in my place?"

"I'm giving her permanent protected status," he says, his voice low but firm, as if delivering a final verdict. "It will be announced at Church tomorrow."

My blood runs cold. Permanent status. That's a formal position, a step just below being an Old Lady. It gives her a voice, a standing, a permanence that no other woman in the club, besides me, has ever had. He's creating a second queen for his kingdom.

"No," I say, the word sharp and final.

Jasper's head snaps up, his eyes flashing with disbelief and anger. "What did you say?"

"I said no," I repeat, my voice gaining strength. "You will not stand up in Church and formally undermine my position. You will not create two queens for one throne."

"You don't give me orders, Chloe!" he roars, his Prez voice in full force, shaking the very walls. "I am the President of this club!"

"And I have been the woman who has held it together from the shadows!" I shoot back, my own anger finally breaking free from its cage. "While you were out playing soldier, who do you think kept the legitimate businesses afloat? Who made sure your men got paid?"

He stares at me, momentarily stunned by my outburst. He's not used to this fire. He's used to my quiet support.

"That's your role," he says dismissively, but there's a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. "You handle the books."

The condescension in his voice is the final straw. The books. As if I'm just his high-priced secretary and not the reason those books even balance.

"Fine," I say, my voice dropping to a dangerously calm level. "You're the President. You make the rules."

I walk to the heavy oak dresser and unclasp the silver necklace from around my neck. It's a thick, custom-made chain with a single, heavy silver feather-his road name is Hawk. He gave it to me the night he claimed me as his Old Lady. The metal is cold against my skin.

I hold it out to him in my open palm. "If I am no longer your one and only, then I have no need for this."

He stares at the necklace as if it's a venomous snake, his face paling. To reject the claim is the ultimate act of defiance for an Old Lady. It's spitting in the face of the President.

"Don't you dare," he growls, his voice a low threat that promises violence.

"You made your choice, Jasper," I say, my heart aching but my resolve hardening into steel. "Now I'm making mine."

I open my fingers and let the necklace drop to the floor between us. It lands with a soft, final clink on the hardwood.

He looks from the necklace on the floor to my face, his expression a storm of fury, confusion, and something that looks terrifyingly like pain. But it's too late for his pain. He should have thought of mine.

Chapter 3

Chloe POV:

The next morning, the air in the Clubhouse is thick with tension. I walk into the room where they hold Church, the long, scarred wooden table surrounded by every patched member of the Iron Legion.

They all wear their Cuts, a sea of black leather and club colors. It's a formal assembly, a sign that whatever is said here is law.

Jasper sits at the head of the table, the President's gavel in his hand. My seat, the one traditionally beside him, is empty. I choose to stand against the back wall, separate and observing.

His eyes find mine, hard and challenging. He's daring me to make a scene. I meet his gaze without flinching, my expression a blank canvas.

Brandy is also present, standing nervously near the door with her children, looking like a lost lamb about to be judged. It's a masterful performance.

Jasper bangs the gavel. "Church is in session." His voice booms in the suddenly silent room.

He doesn't waste time. He recounts the story of Rick's sacrifice on the run, his voice filled with genuine grief and honor. The members listen, their expressions grim. He is a master at commanding his audience, at weaving a narrative of brotherhood and duty.

"For his sacrifice," Jasper concludes, his voice ringing with authority, "his widow, Brandy Cannon, and her children are hereby granted permanent protected status within the Iron Legion MC. They are family. An attack on them is an attack on this club."

He looks directly at me as he says it. A final, public confirmation of my defeat.

A few members, the older ones who remember a time before me, glance uneasily in my direction, but no one speaks against the President's decree. His word is law.

My heart, which I thought couldn't break any further, splinters into a thousand tiny pieces. It's not just about another woman. It's about my entire life, my investment, my love, being publicly devalued and dismissed.

I don't cry. I don't scream. I simply watch as the foundation of my world turns to dust.

As soon as he bangs the gavel to close the meeting, I turn and walk out, ignoring the pitying and curious stares that follow me.

My resolve is no longer just hard; it's forged in ice. He wants to run the club his way? Fine. Let him.

I go straight to the small, cramped office where I manage the club's legitimate businesses-the bar, the auto shop, the small freight contracts. The businesses propped up by Beaumont Logistics. My family's company.

I spend an hour gathering everything: the keys to the businesses, the physical ledgers, the checkbooks, the access codes for the online bank accounts. My hands are steady. My mind is clear. This isn't an act of anger. It's a strategic retreat. A declaration of war fought on my terms.

I find Brandy in the common area, trying to look busy by wiping down an already clean table. She looks up, startled, as I approach.

I dump the heavy ring of keys and the thick ledger books onto the table in front of her. They land with a loud, definitive thud.

She stares at the pile, her eyes wide with confusion. "What's this?"

"It's your new job," I say, my voice devoid of all emotion. "You're family now. You wanted to prove your worth, to contribute. Here's your chance."

Her eyes widen further, and I see a flicker of triumph and greed in them that she can't quite hide. She thinks this is a prize. She thinks I'm abdicating my throne.

"This is everything," I continue, gesturing to the pile. "The keys to the bar, the shop. The account books. You're in charge of the club's legitimate income now. Congratulations."

She can't hide her smirk. "Are you sure, Chloe? Jasper might not..."

"Jasper made his decision," I cut her off. "He decided what kind of family he wants. So I'm making mine. I'm done."

I turn to walk away, but Jasper's voice stops me. He's standing in the doorway of the Church room, his face a thundercloud. He saw the whole thing.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" he demands, striding towards me.

I meet his angry gaze with a cool, detached smile. "What you wanted," I say simply. "I'm making the new family member feel welcome. I'm giving her a purpose."

I look past him, at Brandy, who is now looking uncertain, clutching the keys like they might burn her.

"Good luck," I tell her. "You're going to need it."

Without another word, I walk past a stunned and furious Jasper, leaving the keys to a bankrupt kingdom in the hands of the usurper.
