No Second Chances: My Empire, My Rules

Author: : Xiao Song Shu
Genre: Romance
I stood at the Northwood University Alumni Gala, a successful architect, a wife, and a mother, years after I' d left everything behind. Then, my ex, Ethan Hayes, stepped onto the stage, and the whole room hushed. He finished his speech and, to my horror, dropped to one knee before me, publicly proposing marriage with the words, "Phoenix Rising." Phoenix Rising. The name ignited a searing pain, a brand from a past I' d buried years ago. I remembered my senior year, my award-winning design stolen by Olivia Monroe, and Ethan, my then-boyfriend, standing by her side, calmly confirming her lie. That betrayal led to my disqualification, academic dishonor, and blacklisting, forcing me to flee the US, utterly broken. Stones in my gut, those words. How could he, after everything, dare to invoke that name, that pain, for this grotesque public spectacle? Did he think a grand gesture could erase the humiliation, the shattered dreams, the life I had to rebuild from nothing? But this wasn't the shattered girl he remembered. Before he could utter another word, my husband and daughter appeared, a living testament that I had not only survived but thrived. My past was about to get a very clear message: I was no longer a victim; I was home, loved, and ready to close this painful chapter for good.

Introduction

I stood at the Northwood University Alumni Gala, a successful architect, a wife, and a mother, years after I' d left everything behind.

Then, my ex, Ethan Hayes, stepped onto the stage, and the whole room hushed.

He finished his speech and, to my horror, dropped to one knee before me, publicly proposing marriage with the words, "Phoenix Rising."

Phoenix Rising.

Chapter 1

Sarah Miller stood near the edge of the crowded ballroom, the noise of Northwood University' s Alumni Gala a dull hum around her.

She had not wanted to come.

Years had passed since she last walked these grounds, years spent building a new life far away.

But Alex, her husband, had encouraged her. "Go," he'd said, "Show them who you are now."

So here she was, a successful architect, a wife, a mother.

A hush fell over the room as Ethan Hayes stepped to the podium.

Ethan.

Her Ethan, once.

Now a successful lawyer, his family' s influence still echoing in these halls.

His keynote speech was smooth, confident. Sarah barely listened, a strange calm settling over her.

Then, he finished. He looked directly at her, a spotlight finding her in the dimness.

Sarah froze.

"And one more thing," Ethan announced, his voice amplified, "There' s someone here tonight who inspired my greatest project, my Phoenix Rising."

He was walking towards her.

The crowd murmured.

"Sarah Miller," he said, dropping to one knee before her, a velvet box appearing in his hand. "You were my Phoenix then, and you are now. Marry me."

The world tilted.

Phoenix Rising.

Her design.

The name seared through her mind, a brand from a past she had buried.

Flashback: Her senior year, the architectural competition. Her innovative "Phoenix Rising" design, her heart poured into every line.

Then Olivia Monroe, all smiles and social grace, presenting the same concept.

Ethan, standing by Olivia' s side, his voice calm as he confirmed Olivia' s claim.

Disqualification.

Academic dishonor.

Blacklisted.

The words were like stones, crushing her.

She had fled the US, broken.

The present slammed back.

Ethan was still there, on one knee, expectant.

The silence in the room was heavy.

Before Sarah could speak, a hand touched her arm.

Mark Johnson, Ethan' s old college friend, was beside her, his expression earnest.

"Sarah, can we talk? In private?"

She allowed him to guide her to a quieter alcove.

The eyes of the gala attendees followed them.

"Sarah, he' s a mess," Mark began, his voice low. "Ethan, he' s always loved you."

Sarah said nothing.

"He regrets everything," Mark continued, "He even tried to get your degree reinstated after you left. He fought for you."

Sarah looked at Mark, her face unreadable.

"He didn't know how to reach you then," Mark pressed on. "This proposal, it's... it's him trying to fix things, the only way he knows how."

He waited for a response.

Sarah' s voice, when it came, was cool, devoid of emotion.

"Fix things?"

Chapter 2

Sarah dismissed Mark with a slight shake of her head, unmoved by his words.

Ethan' s supposed regret meant nothing to her now.

She remembered college.

She remembered being the one who pursued.

She' d spent weeks sourcing a rare architectural artifact for Ethan, a first edition monograph he' d casually mentioned wanting.

She remembered late nights in the studio, helping him with his projects, her own work often pushed aside.

She recalled twisting her ankle rushing to meet him once, then smiling through the pain because he' d seemed irritated by her lateness.

He had been her world.

Their initial romance had been intense, a whirlwind.

She thought they were building something real.

Then Olivia Monroe appeared.

Beautiful, wealthy, and, most importantly, approved by Ethan' s influential family.

Suddenly, Ethan was busy.

He started canceling their dates.

She' d see photos of him with Olivia at high-profile charity events, exclusive parties.

"Family obligations," he' d say, or "Networking, it' s important, Sarah."

One night, he was supposed to take her to an important architectural awards dinner, a celebration of a small commendation she' d received.

He never showed.

Later, Olivia' s social media showed a picture: her and Ethan, smiling, on a private jet.

The caption read: "Surprise business trip! So exciting!"

Sarah had confronted him.

He' d looked down at her, his expression cold.

"You' re being too demanding, Sarah," he' d said.

"And frankly, a little insecure. It' s not attractive."

Those words had cut deep, leaving a scar she thought had faded, until tonight.

The memory was still sharp, still capable of causing a faint ache.

But it was an old ache, a distant thing.

Her life now, with Alex and Lily, was a balm, a constant source of warmth that overshadowed these cold echoes.
