Introduction

Chloe did it again.

Another boyfriend stolen, another round of humiliation in our family chat led by Aunt Linda' s fake sympathy.

My own mother just sighed and told me to "try harder next time."

This was the pattern, my glamorous cousin Chloe, making sport of my relationships, taking whatever, or whoever, was mine.

But this time, as news of her latest conquest spread, a cold certainty settled within me.

This time, it wouldn' t be another defeat.

This time, I was ready.

The object of her latest desire was Ethan, my new boyfriend, whose existence I' d deliberately kept quiet until now.

He was everything she craved: charismatic, successful, irresistible.

I "accidentally" let slip details about him to my mother, then watched, anticipating, as the news inevitably reached Chloe.

Her audaciously casual message arrived soon after: "Heard you have a new toy, cous. Mind if I check him out for you?"

My stomach twisted, but not with dread – with grim, calculating satisfaction.

Years of quiet resentment, fueled by her casual cruelty and relentless need to diminish me, had finally solidified into a singular, unwavering purpose.

She thought she was still playing her same old game, but she had no idea the depth of the trap she was about to step into.

Ethan, with a hidden, dangerous secret I' d discovered months ago, wasn't just another man for Chloe to steal.

He was the linchpin of my meticulously crafted revenge.

This cycle of humiliation was about to end, but not the way Chloe expected.

Chapter 1

Chloe did it again, another boyfriend stolen, another round of humiliation in the family Facebook group.

"Sarah just can't keep a man," Aunt Linda commented, her words dripping with fake sympathy.

My mother, Susan, just sighed and told me to try harder next time.

This was the pattern, Chloe, my glamorous cousin, made it her life's mission to take whatever, or whoever, was mine.

But this time, I was ready, this time, it would be different.

I had a plan, meticulously crafted, and Ethan was the key.

Chloe lived lavishly off her divorce settlement from David, a man I once knew in college.

She was older, more confident, and in her mind, always superior.

Her life revolved around attention, and my relationships were her favorite targets.

She' d "test" them, seduce them, then discard them, all while painting me as the fool.

My mother, obsessed with appearances and keeping up with Chloe' s mother, Linda, would always feed Chloe information.

Susan would tell Linda about my dates, my jobs, my struggles, and Linda would relay it all to Chloe, who then used it against me.

It was a cycle I was determined to break.

Ethan, my new boyfriend of six months, was someone I kept deliberately quiet about.

He was charismatic, successful, handsome, everything Chloe would find irresistible.

And he had a secret, a dark one I' d discovered early on, a secret that made him perfect for my trap.

I let it slip to Mom, a carefully orchestrated "accident" during a phone call.

"Oh, Sarah, you're seeing someone? Is he nice? What does he do?" Susan' s voice buzzed with excitement.

I gave her just enough details about Ethan, his tech startup, his good looks.

Predictably, the news spread like wildfire through the family channels.

"Sarah's new man sounds like a real catch!" Mom posted in the group chat, complete with a heart emoji.

It didn't take long for Chloe to message me.

"Heard you have a new toy, cous. Mind if I check him out for you? Make sure he's up to par."

Her audacity was astounding, but it was exactly what I expected.

I told her to stay away, that Ethan wasn't her type.

Internally, I smiled, the first piece of the puzzle was in place.

I had already warned Ethan about Chloe.

"My cousin Chloe can be... a lot," I told him over dinner one night.

"She has this weird habit of trying to get involved in my relationships, sends friend requests, DMs, you name it."

"Just ignore her if she tries anything," I said, looking him in the eyes, "She' s trouble."

Ethan, ever the confident entrepreneur, just smirked.

"Don't worry, Sarah, I can handle a little family drama."

He had no idea what he was truly signing up for, or perhaps, on some level, his own darkness recognized a kindred spirit in the chaos I was orchestrating.

My warning wasn't just a warning, it was a challenge, a subtle dare.

And I knew Chloe, and now Ethan, well enough to predict they wouldn't resist.

Chapter 2

Ethan, true to my initial assessment of his character, initially brushed off Chloe's attempts.

He showed me the friend requests from multiple fake profiles, all with Chloe's signature overly filtered selfies.

"Persistent, isn't she?" he'd said, a hint of amusement in his voice.

I played the concerned girlfriend.

"I told you, Ethan, she's relentless, just keep blocking her."

He agreed, but I saw a flicker of something else in his eyes, intrigue perhaps, or the thrill of a new game.

I didn't push him for any deeper commitment, didn't ask him to meet my family formally.

Our relationship was still relatively new, and I used that as an excuse to keep him somewhat isolated, under my control.

He thought he was playing along to appease me, but he was a puppet, and I held the strings.

Chloe, however, was not one to be easily deterred.

Frustrated by Ethan's online silence, she found another way in, through my mother, of course.

"Sarah, darling, Chloe's going to be in your neighborhood on Tuesday, she wanted to drop by your new apartment, see how you're settling in," Susan chirped over the phone.

My "new apartment" that Ethan had helped me find and furnish.

"Oh, and she said she might bring a little housewarming gift."

I knew Chloe didn't care about my apartment, she cared about Ethan.

"Mom, I might be busy," I tried, feigning annoyance.

"Nonsense, dear, it's family."

So, Chloe arrived, uninvited but expected, right when Ethan was over helping me hang some shelves.

I watched them from the kitchen, pretending to make coffee.

Chloe was all charm and fake sweetness, complimenting my decor, asking about my job, all while her eyes kept flicking to Ethan.

Ethan was polite, reserved, but I saw him sizing her up.

The air was thick with unspoken challenges.

Chloe didn't waste time.

"Ethan, right? Sarah's told me so little about you," she purred, extending a perfectly manicured hand.

"She said you're in tech?"

Ethan shook her hand, a brief, firm grip.

"Something like that," he replied, noncommittal.

"Well, I have a lot of connections in that world, you know, from my ex-husband, David. He was big in venture capital."

Ethan's ears perked up at the mention of David's name, a name I knew carried weight.

Chloe saw it too.

"Maybe I could help you out sometime," she added, her smile widening.

Ethan initially demurred, "Thanks, but I think I've got it covered."

He even glanced at me, a small, reassuring smile.

Chloe just laughed, a light, tinkling sound that grated on my nerves.

"Oh, I'm sure you do, but a few extra doors opened never hurt anyone, right?"

Her persistence was a weapon, and she wielded it expertly.

I "accidentally" dropped a coffee mug, shattering it on the floor.

"Oh, clumsy me," I said, my voice trembling slightly.

Ethan rushed over, "Are you okay, Sarah?"

Chloe watched, a smug look on her face.

"Let me help you clean that up," I told Ethan, my eyes downcast.

Later that evening, after Chloe finally left, Ethan brought it up.

"She's... a character," he said, shaking his head.

"I told you," I replied, trying to sound weary.

"Look, she messaged me again, on that app, Signal," he showed me his phone. "Maybe if I just add her, respond a little, she'll get bored and leave us alone?"

"I don't know, Ethan..." I hesitated, playing reluctant.

"It's fine, Sarah, I'll handle it, just to get her off our backs."

He added her, and I knew the hook was set.

My internal satisfaction was immense, masked by a carefully constructed facade of concern.
