My husband, Liam Hayes, a prominent real estate developer, was a ghost in our lives. For six years, he kept me and our daughter, Lily, a secret. The day Lily was born, I was alone in the hospital. He was with his high school sweetheart, Olivia Chen. He always chose Olivia. He looked at our newborn with chilling indifference, telling me, "Don' t let her get in my way." Lily, sweet and innocent, called him "Mr. Hayes" to gain his acknowledgment, watched him dote on Olivia's daughter, and had her heart broken a thousand times. The final straw was at a company event where he brought Olivia as his date, laughing, while I stood in the shadows. I decided thenLily and I had to leave. But Lily, with painful hope, whispered about her upcoming birthday, "Maybe... maybe he'll come this time." Knowing he never had, I crumbled, promising to wait two more weeks. The next morning, armed with divorce papers and a resignation letter, I walked into Hayes Industries. I saw Liam and Olivia, intimately close. He looked at her with disgust, prying her off him. "Whose child is this? Get her out of here." The words echoed, shattering fragments of my heart: "Nanny's child." Lily's face crumpled in utter devastation. I scooped her into my arms, my own tears falling, as the world stared. He always chose Olivia, and now, he chose to deny Lily entirely. How could a father be so cruel? How could he blatantly disregard his own child in public? The pain was unbearable, the humiliation searing. I needed to escape this nightmare. "We're leaving," I whispered to Lily. "We' re going somewhere warm, where we' ll finally be a real family."

Introduction

My husband, Liam Hayes, a prominent real estate developer, was a ghost in our lives. For six years, he kept me and our daughter, Lily, a secret.

The day Lily was born, I was alone in the hospital. He was with his high school sweetheart, Olivia Chen. He always chose Olivia. He looked at our newborn with chilling indifference, telling me, "Don' t let her get in my way."

Lily, sweet and innocent, called him "Mr.

Olivia mocked me, and Liam loudly claimed he barely remembered me.

Suddenly, Lily burst out, a fresh bruise on her cheek, running to Liam. "Mr. Hayes! They said... they said I don't have a daddy." He looked at her with disgust, prying her off him. "Whose child is this? Get her out of here."

The words echoed, shattering fragments of my heart: "Nanny's child." Lily's face crumpled in utter devastation.

Chapter 1

"Mommy, are we really leaving?" Lily asked, her small voice trembling slightly.

She clutched a worn-out doll in her arms, a gift from a man she barely knew.

Sarah Miller looked at her daughter, her heart aching. "Yes, sweetie. We're going on a big adventure to a new country."

She tried to sound cheerful, but the words felt like ash in her mouth. This wasn't an adventure. It was an escape.

For six years, Sarah had been married to Liam Hayes, a man who was a ghost in their lives. He was a prominent real estate developer, a name everyone knew. But no one knew he had a wife and a daughter.

He had made sure of that.

Sarah remembered the day Lily was born. She had been alone in the hospital room, a sterile white space that felt as cold as her marriage. Liam hadn't been there. He had been with Olivia Chen, his high school sweetheart.

He always chose Olivia.

Later, when she brought Lily home, he had looked at the tiny baby with a chilling indifference. "Don't let her get in my way," he had said, his voice flat. Those words had been the foundation of their life together.

Lily, sweet and innocent, had spent her life trying to win his affection. Sarah had taught her to call him "Mr. Hayes." It was the only way he would even acknowledge her presence.

"Mr. Hayes," Lily would say, her eyes wide with hope, "can you read me a story?"

"I'm busy," he would reply, not even looking up from his phone.

Sarah had watched her daughter' s heart break a thousand times. She saw him dote on Olivia, saw him treat Olivia's daughter with a kindness he never showed his own. The final straw had been a few weeks ago, at a company event. He had brought Olivia as his date, laughing and holding her hand while Sarah stood in the shadows, an invisible employee at his own company.

She had decided then. They had to leave.

But now, Lily's big brown eyes were filled with a familiar, painful hope. "My birthday is in two weeks," she whispered. "Maybe... maybe he'll come this time."

Sarah knew he wouldn't. Liam had never celebrated Lily's birthday. Not once.

Yet, seeing the desperate plea in her daughter's face, Sarah's resolve crumbled. "Okay, sweetie," she heard herself say. "We'll wait two more weeks. We'll leave after your birthday."

She was giving her daughter a promise she knew would be broken. It was a final, painful gift, one last chance for a dream to die.

Chapter 2

The next morning, Sarah walked into the gleaming lobby of Hayes Industries. The building was a monument to Liam's success, a constant reminder of the world he belonged to and the one she was excluded from.

She clutched her divorce papers and resignation letter in a folder. Today, she was cutting the final ties.

Her mind drifted back nine years. She had been a brilliant young architect, full of dreams, with a secret, hopeless crush on Liam Hayes. He was the golden boy, the heir to a fortune, completely out of her league.

Their paths crossed at a company party. He was drunk, heartbroken over Olivia' s recent marriage to another man. One night. That' s all it had been. A single, regrettable night.

But that one night had resulted in Lily.

Liam' s family, concerned with appearances, had insisted on a marriage. "We can't have a scandal," his mother had said, her eyes cold. So they had a quiet ceremony, a contract, a marriage that was nothing more than a hollow shell.

Nine years of unrequited love had led to this. A loveless marriage, a hidden daughter, and a heart worn thin from neglect.

She reached her desk, took a deep breath, and logged into her computer. The resignation form was already filled out. Her finger hovered over the "confirm" button. A single click, and nine years of her life would be erased.

She clicked it.

A sense of relief washed over her, quickly followed by a pang of sadness. She stood up and walked towards the HR department to submit the divorce papers.

As she turned the corner, she saw them. Liam and Olivia. He was leaning against the wall, a rare smile on his face as he listened to Olivia speak. Her hand was on his arm, a casual, intimate gesture that spoke volumes.

Colleagues passing by whispered among themselves. "They're back together." "She's finally divorced her husband." "They always belonged together."

Each word was a small, sharp pain.

Olivia noticed her first. Her smile was mocking. "Well, look who it is. Sarah, right? You're one of Liam's junior architects, aren't you?"

Liam glanced over, his expression turning to ice. "I barely remember her," he said, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear.

The cruelty of his words stole Sarah's breath.

Just then, the elevator doors opened and a small figure burst out, running towards them.

"Mommy!"

It was Lily, her face streaked with tears, a fresh bruise blooming on her cheek. She must have been dropped off by the nanny.

Lily saw Liam and her face lit up with a desperate hope. She ran past Sarah, her small arms reaching for him. "Mr. Hayes!"

She clung to his leg, sobbing. "They said... they said I don't have a daddy."

The hallway fell silent. Everyone stared.

Liam looked down at the crying child attached to his leg as if she were a piece of garbage. He pried her hands off him.

"Whose child is this?" he asked loudly, his voice laced with disgust. He looked at the on-duty nanny who had followed Lily out. "Can't you even watch a nanny's child properly? Get her out of here."

The world seemed to stop. "Nanny's child."

The words echoed in the silent hallway, shattering the last fragments of Sarah's heart. Lily's face crumpled, a look of utter devastation replacing her hope.

Sarah rushed forward, scooping her daughter into her arms, shielding her from the cold, curious stares. She held Lily tight, her own tears finally falling, silent and hot.
