Nathan Montgomery Rise To Riches

Nathan looked around as he walked into one of the fanciest living rooms he has ever seen, the one other time he had seen a place as fancy as this was when he had visited his high school girlfriend at home, one of his biggest mistakes, he had left there and walked home to the rundown apartment that he shared with his mom and two little sisters, the relationship had ended after that when she had asked to visit his house and he had been unable to bring her to his place, that was years ago and until now, nothing has changed in his life, well there was a change but it got worse instead of better, h

e lost his mom in the most brutal way and was left to care for his two younger sisters.

In all his twenty-six years of living, he has never once experienced an easy life, it got worse when his mother had been killed during his final year in uni and he had to return home to care for his younger siblings, he never got to finish his final year in school and that's how his dream of breaking out of poverty was shattered, of course, he hadn't given up when he couldn't finish school, far from it, he had worked his ass off to gather money and start a business but then, he had been scammed out of the money, safe to say his life just couldn't get worse than it already is, there no low he could get from here, he was already at his lowest and he concluded that the maker had favorites and he just wasn't part of them.

"Hello?"

He called as he looked around more, he wanted to just drop the order and be on his way, he still had a couple of more orders today before he would call it a day, he needed all the money he could get, Nora was entering senior year soon and he wanted her to have the basic things needed, she had wanted to get a job but he had told her no, she was too young to work, despite the fact that are they poor, he did his best to shield his sisters from the harsh world, there was no nice boss out there and he had enough proof, he didn't want his sisters to experience the shit he was going through.

"Hello? I got the food you ordered,'

He called out loud wondering who lets strangers into their house and not bother to come to check on them, usually, he leaves the orders at the entrance but his boss had told him to take it into the house as the man who ordered was a VIP.

"Oh, sorry I had to do a quick one with my baby, we have been on a roll since morning and meant to take a break for food but we just can't get enough of each other you know,"

The man said coming downstairs with just a robe on, Nathan mentally rolled his eyes, what was the use of telling him that, he was in no way interested in another man's sex life.

"Thank you for ordering from us sir, enjoy your meal,"

Nathan said setting the package on the table, he turned to leave but the man stopped him.

"I have to check and be sure this is my order before you can leave, the last time, you guys gave the wrong order,"

The man complained. Nathan turned back to him and waited for him to check his order first but the mudafucker was taking forever to open the damn thing, Nathan tried his best not to let that get to him, it was too early in the day to be pissed off already, he hated rich people and their entitled asses, hated how they got everything and anything even when they are not working, dare he stay home for one day and both him and his siblings will have to starve, what more, the money the man had used for just one order was enough to feed him and his sisters for two whole weeks, rich people and being wasteful while other die of hunger, he felt bitter.

"All good, honey, you should come to check if they got your orders right unless you will go hungry, we can't have that because you need a lot of strength if we are going to continue our marathon,"

He called out to whoever was upstairs before turning to Nathan with a sly smile.

"We are having a three days straight sex session,"

He informed, and Nathan couldn't hide his disgust.

"I don't need to know that,"

He let out, with a frown and the man started laughing.

"What's funny babe?"

A very familiar voice called from upstairs and Nathan wiped his head up so fast that his neck almost snapped.

"Annie?"

Nathan called out in shock, the last person he had expected to walk out of that room when the man had called honey was his girlfriend, she was wearing a robe, she looked shocked to see him at first but she soon blew it off and adjusted her robe before walking towards them, Nathan stood there still in disbelief, what the heck was she doing here, wearing a robe and being called honey by another man?

"Honey, you know him?"

The man asked and Nathan turned to him.

"She is my girlfriend,"

He let out in a shaking voice. He couldn't believe Annie was cheating on him with a much older man at that. The man started laughing at his words and even Annie joined him.

"You are such a joker, why will a beauty like this be with someone like you?"

The man asked between laughter.

"Don't mind him, babe, he is delusional,"

Annie responded and Nathan turned to her, he suddenly could not say a word, he lost his voice at what she said and how she had spoken to him when just yesterday she had told him she loved him and told him she was traveling to see her family, she lied to him and made a fool out of him, he just couldn't believe what he was seeing and hearing, Annie was his only sunshine in this world, this just couldn't be real.

"Annie you are joking right?"

He asked when he found his voice again.

"Why will I be joking? You and me are nothing to each other, stop being delusional, I will never bring myself so low as to date someone as broke and useless as you,"

She responded pointing at him and looking down at him, both she and the man started laughing when he fell on his kneel, he couldn't take this, it was too much for him to handle, he and Annie has been a thing for almost two years now, the only reason he hasn't proposed to her already was that he wanted to save up a lot before it so that she won't have to struggle, even with his poor state, he still did his best to support her, she was his one true get away from all the problems life threw at him, it just couldn't be true.

"Annie, you can't do this to me, who is this man and what are you doing with him? You told me you were traveling, told me you are going to see your parents, how are you here in another man's house wearing a robe an..."

Nathan said and paused as the reality of the whole situation started to dawn on him, she lied to him that she was traveling meanwhile, she was here, with another man, having a sex marathon, openly cheating on him and pretending they had nothing going on, this had to be a horrible dream, Annie would never do this to him, they love each other too much.

"Honey, is he the boy you talked about? The one that thinks you are going to settle with him?"

The man asked, still laughing.

"The very same delusional idiot, I don't know what gave him the idea that I was in his class, at least he got the wake-up call now, Naty baby, you and I were never a thing, and we will never be,"

Annie said. Nathan concluded he was dreaming, this wasn't real, he is going to wake up in bed with Annie any moment from now and she would mock him for his stupid dream, he slapped himself to help him wake up fast but instead of waking up, the laughter of Annie and the man filled the room, he felt paralyzed by the pain that shot through him when he finally let himself believe that he wasn't dreaming, this was real, Annie really cheated him, he raised his head and looked at her, she looked like a complete stranger, the Annie he knew and loved wasn't the one standing in front of him, it was someone else, and she was mocking him.

"Laughing so much suddenly makes me so horny babe, what do we do?"

the man asked and Nathan watched in dismal as Annie walked up to him and threw her hands around his shoulder and his around her waist.

"Oh baby, you can have me anytime you want, I am all yours,"

Annie said as she removed her robe, she was naked under the robe, Nathan watched in horror as the both of them started making out in front of him, he couldn't take it anymore, he walked up to them and pushed the man away from Annie.

"What's your problem fucker? Get out of my house," the man yelled at him but Nathan ignored him and turned his attention to the woman he loved and who he had thought loved him too.

"Annie, you told me you love me, I don't know what's happening but I can let this go, I can pretend this never happened and I won't talk about it ever again, just don't leave me for him, I love you so much, I can't live without you Annie, my life is meaningless without you,"

Nathan pleaded desperately, he couldn't imagine his life without her in it, he hated how dependent he was on her but he just couldn't help it, but his pleads fell on deaf ears, the more he talked the more they mocked him, Annie called him a loser and a beggar with no future.

"What made you think I will settle for a beggar like you? I mean look at me, do you think you can handle this?"

She asked, spinning around. Nathan was much too dumbfounded by her change of attitude to say a word.. He could only stare in horror at the woman he had thought he would spend the rest of his life with.

"The only reason I stayed so long with you was because you knew how to do me right, now I found someone who can spend on me and also do me well, you think I will leave him for you? No matter how good you are in bed, if you are poor, you can't get a woman, unless she wants to do some charity, which is what I did for you,"

Annie revealed and Nathan felt his heartbreak into a thousand pieces, he couldn't take it anymore.

"Is that it, Annie? Why didn't you just tell me? You should have told me you wanted out, I know I would have been hurt but it would have been better than me finding out this way, we were together yesterday, you should have told me," he let out in anger

"Yeah, where is the fun in that? I like it this way, of course, I didn't plan it to happen like this but I like how it turned out, I always wanted to see you lose it when you find out, I wanted to see your face when you find out just how much of a delusional loser you are and boy, I wasn't disappointed, I had fun, but you can't handle me, poor boy,"

She said in a mocking tune and they both burst out laughing, right before they went back to kissing in front of him like he wasn't there.

Nathan walked out then, walked as fast as his shaking legs could take him, he ignored the security man at the gate and got out of the house on his own, got on his motorcycle, and rode back towards his workplace with a broken heart, he felt ashamed, to think he had dreamt of building a life with Annie, she had pretended to love him and all this while she had been using him, he should have known, he should have seen through her, the fact that he had given her his whole savings because she had complained of not having money to pay her bills, she lied to him, he wiped his eyes to keep the tears.

His eyes got blurry from crying and he had to pull over to get himself together, he saw people watching him but didn't even mind, he was much too heartbroken and sad to give a fuck about what they thought of him crying n the streets, he thought his life couldn't get any worse, jokes on him because it did, Annie had played him and mocked him behind his back all the while he was in love with her and cared for her, she had played him for a fool, he was indeed a fool for not reading in-between the line, they were clues but he had ignored it, he wiped his tears and tried to put himself together, but just the thought of what they had shared, what he thought they had and how he found out it was all made up lies broke him so badly.

Nathan sat on top of his motorcycle for more than one hour, barely aware of what was going on around him, he was much too absolved by his pain and sadness, and when he finally got himself back a little, he started his motorcycle and rode back to work still grieving.

"Why are you just coming back? What took you so long?"

His boss yelled at him when he finally arrived at work, he let out a sigh, he knew this would happen.

"I am sorry, I had a lot on my mind and had to pull over to avoid getting into an accident,"

He explained, his boss glared at him before tossing the next delivery at him.

"You better not be late this time or you are not getting any pay,"

The man said and went back inside, Nathan stared at the delivery box in his hand, turned around and walked back to his motorcycle, and made it to his next delivery place, he did about eight more rounds for the day, he had to force smiles and be nice to all his customers to avoid getting a bad review from them, he finally did his last order and got by to the restaurant at seven pm, he parked his motorcycle and went into the restaurant to get his pay for the day's work.

"Good that you are back, can I have my keys?"

His boss said as soon as he entered stretching his hand out to collect it from him but Nathan held on to the keys, he already had a bad feeling about this and knew he might not get his pay if he just gave back the key.

"Why sir?"

He asked in a weary voice, he already knew he was getting fired.

"Do I need a reason to get my keys back from you? In case you want to know, your services are no longer needed, I can't stand to lose a very generous and regular customer because of your nasty attitude, give me my keys<"

His boss yelled at him, charging towards him, Nathan took a few steps back.

"I can't hand the keys over if I don't know what I did for you to fire me, plus you have to pay me first,"

Nathan let out, today has been too hectic for him to face another injustice at the hand of this wicked man that was already underpaying him.

"You, rude ass mudafucker, you spoke rudely to my regular customer, he pays too generously for you to have been disrespectful, here is your day payment, I want you out of here this minute, and don't ever come back,"

He yelled at him and threw the money at him, the dollar bills scattered all over the ground and Nathan bent down to pick them up before wordlessly handing over the key to him, he took it and hissed before turning away from him to yell at the other delivery guys who had gathered to watch him get fired, Nathan turned and walked out of the place, he had a long way to walk before he gets home, he couldn't afford to take a bus, that would mean no lunch for his sisters tomorrow and he didn't want that to happen and the walk back home will give him time to think and come in terms with all that happened today, and get his thoughts together because he wasn't about to take what happened home, he didn't want his sisters to know.

As he walked home, tired and heartbroken, he brought out his phone which has been in his jacket pocket, and realized he had lots of missed calls from Nora and also Nelly's homeroom teacher, he felt his heart beat increase in fear, the call was since two pm, and now it was almost eight pm, he couldn't call the homeroom teacher because it was already so late, he dialed Nora's number praying that nothing bad has happened.

"Nathan, why weren't you taking your calls?"

Nora cried over the phone and Nathan felt his heart sink in pain, something bad did happen...

"What happened Nora, please calm down and talk to me,"

Nathan said as he increased his pace his heart beating so fast fearing for the worse, the last time he had gotten a call like this was five years ago, and he had to go pick up the remains of his dear mother. he still beat himself up every day for not knowing just how much his mom had been going through and he couldn't let anything like that happen to his sisters.

"Nora," He urged when she didn't say anything and just kept crying.

"It's Nell, she fainted in school and was brought to the hospital and we have been trying to reach you, why didn't you pick up Nat?"

She cried and Nathan felt guilt eating at him, while his little sister had been fighting for her life, he had been humiliating himself because of a woman, he felt so ashamed.

"I am so sorry Nora, I had my phone in my pocket and didn't know you called, where are you? Where is Nelly?'

Nathan asked as he started walking faster, he had to take a bus or a cab now if he was going to get there as soon as possible, he looked around for a cab or something but the only vehicles passing were private ones and there was no bus coming at all.

"I am at home, Mrs. Wails dropped me off at home because I had to change, I got my period, Nelly is still at the hospital and she is not waking up,"

His sister informed him, and he felt his heart sink in pain, Nora always has the worst cramps, and the fact that she had to deal with Nell being sick with that while not being able to reach him made him sick, he should have checked his phone but he had been too absolved in the pains that Annie caused him to think of anything else, he just made his sisters panic because of that and he didn't think he would ever forgive himself or Annie if anything happens to his sisters.

"What hospital did they take her to? You stay home and I will go see her, make sure to take some painkillers and get a hot bath,"

Nathan said as he finally saw a cab heading his way, he waved it down and ran in even before Nora told him the hospital Nelly was in.

"She is at the hospital close to the city mall, she was taken there when the school nurse couldn't handle her,"

She revealed, great even with a cab, it would take him fifteen minutes or more to get there, he told the driver to step on it.

"Nora, please get some rest, okay, I am sorry I didn't pick up earlier, I am going to Nell now, please stop crying,'

He pleaded with his sister who was still crying so hard over the phone, he couldn't blame her though, he knew just how terrible her cramps get and with everything that happened and him not answering the call, it must have made things even harder for her.

''I can't rest Nat, I am so scared, I don't want Nell to die,"

She cried,"

"Nora, she is not going to die okay, please, stop crying I beg you,"

He said and she finally stopped sobbing so hard.

"Good girl, now go lay on your bed and I will come home when I have seen Nelly,"

He said and ended the call, now he had to face another sad reality of what Nelly being at the hospital can mean, they didn't have health insurance which means he had to pay for her treatment, he hoped to god that it wasn't anything serious because he didn't have any money to pay, the only money with him won't even cover anything.

"God, why,"

He let out as frustrated tears gather in his eyes, he actually thought his life couldn't get any worse and the universe decided to prove him wrong in the most cruel way, lost a woman he thought was his forever, lost his job and now his sister was in the hospital, how worse can it get from here though? How much low can the universe sink to make his life hell?

Nelly wasn't an unhealthy child, heck she never fall sick and this morning before she left for school, she told him she had a headache and pain in her abdomen, he had given her painkillers and told her she could skip school for today but she had insisted on going because her team had a basketball game, what could have happened that she had ended up in the hospital? He just hoped it isn't something serious.

Nathan got out of the cab as soon as he arrived at the hospital, paid the driver, and ran all the way to the hospital reception.

"Hello, please where can I find a twelve years old girl who was brought in this afternoon by her teacher? Her name is Nelly Montgomery,"

He asked the nurse at the reception who looked at him weirdly.

"Visiting time is over sir, you have to come back tomorrow,"

She said.

"Wait, what? I need to see my sister, she was brought here this afternoon, and I haven't even seen her yet to know if she is admitted as an inpatient, what visiting are you talking about? I need to see my sister,"

Nathan yelled at the nurse. She finally looked up at him properly.

"What did you say her name is again?"

She asked and Nathan nearly lost his cool, she hadn't been listening the first time, the kind of people that they employ at the hospital.

"I said her name is Nelly, Montgomery, she was brought here this afternoon after she collapsed in school,"

He informed impatiently while looking around.

"Oh, she is in the ICU, just walk straight and then turn left, you will see a doctor at the entrance, speak to him, he takes care of patients in there."

She informed and he ran in the direction the nurse had pointed out, he saw the doctor who just came out of a room he suspected to be the ICU, and he ran towards him.

"Doctor, I, 'm sorry, my sister was brought here,"

Nathan said breathing heavenly.

"Nelly?"

The doctor asked and he nodded.

"We have been waiting for you all afternoon ever since her teacher brought her I, she s over there,"

The doctor pointed and he looked up to see his sister, she was laying down in the hospital bed, an oxygen mask over her little face, she looked so pale and helpless, it broke his heart.

"I was at work and my phone didn't ring out, what is wrong with her doc?"

Nathan asked looking from Nelly to the doctor who checked the note he had in his hand.

"Well, her appendix is swollen and infected, she must have been bearing the pain for quick some time because, it looks really swollen and might rupture at any moment, which is what is causing her pain and the excessiveness of the pain is what caused her to collapse.

The doctor explained, it all became so clear to Nathan, those times he had seen her hold her tummy, she must have been in pain but each time he asked her, she would tell him she was okay and that it was just a habit, his sister has been dying in silence, he should have known but he never thought about the possibility of her being sick because she never showed it until this morning.

"What needs to be done for her to be okay?'

He asked the doctor.

"She needs to get it out as soon as possible, in essence, I am saying she needs surgery, we would have done it seeing they brought her in if you have showed up when they called,"

The doctor explained and Nathan wondered why his not showing up would make them not treat her, if it required a signature, surely Mrs. Wails could have signed in his stead, she was considered a caregiver and guardian too seeing that she is Nelly's teacher.

"Why didn't you treat her though,"

He asked and the doctor chuckled which annoyed him, he didn't ask any funny questions.

"Mr. Montgomery, you have no health insurance which is the first thing we checked after the scan, the surgery requires about fifty thousand dollars and we weren't certain you would have the money ready if we operate on her so we had to wait until you come, now that you are here, if you can go pay, we can operate on her,"

The doctor explained. Nathan stood there in silence, he didn't know what to say, fifty thousand dollars was money he has never seen in his whole life at once, where would he get that kind of money from? All he had on him both here and in his bank didn't even add up to ten thousand.

"Doc, I don't have that kind of money right now but if you wi***"

"We can't do anything until you have the money, I am sorry Mr. Montgomery but we aren't covered enough to carry out a surgery without a deposit,"

The doctor responded cutting him off. There had to be a way the doctor can help him while he go around looking for the money.

"You have to help me doc, there has to be a way you can help me, I will pay for sure,"

He let out.

"We have already done the basis but going from here, you have to pay first and I will advise you to find the money first, she is in a lot of pain even though we have given her painkillers, it won't her case because her pains are above what the painkillers can handle,"

The doctor said.

"That's why you have to help me<"

He cried.

"Doctor, please don't let my sister die, I promise, I will find the money and bring it to you before the end of the week

Nathan pleaded with the doctor who seemed to not want to hear his sobering story, it was like he was talking to a brick wall as the doctor remained unmoved by his pleas.

"We can only keep her here for tonight and that's because the person that brought her here already deposited enough to cover the bills for tonight, if you don't get the complete money in twenty-four hours, we will have no choice but to let her go and that's not good for her, the appendix is already swollen as I already mentioned and it might burst at any time, and that might lead to her passing, you neither have insurance or the means to pay for surgery right now so I would advise you go look for the money because there is nothing else we can do for you,"

The doctor stated and walked away leaving him standing there, he turned to where his sister lay and watched his baby sister from outside there with tears in his eyes, Nelly was already struggling and she was still at the hospital, what would happen if they take her home? He didn't want to lose her too, he wiped his tears and prayed for some kind of miracle, where could he go to get the money? It was already so late, nevertheless, he left the hospital and walked towards their house, the distance wasn't so far anyway, he thought of calling Mrs. Wails and asking for a financial assistant but the woman has done enough for them already, she was just a teacher and she had three kids and a diabetic husband to fend for, he couldn't keep asking her for money.

Nathan also thought of calling Annie and asking her to help him with money since he knew she would definitely have but decided not to, she would not give him the money and he just knew it, he couldn't embarrass himself in front of her anymore. No one else came to mind and all Nathan could wish for was some kind of miracle to happen.

"Hey, debtor,"

Nathan heard a familiar voice call and his heart sank, right more trouble for him, this day just got even worse, of all the days Trent chose to show up today, the universe was definitely against him and they were showing no mercy...
